Title: We will show them! (Halfling village builder ISG)
Post by: Asgarus on March 05, 2017, 05:46:28 am
We will show them!

Intro
Somewhere in the middle of the big, wild, forest in the west, far off from any settlement or any borders, lies a round clearing.
It is not that large, but compared to the group gathered in its center, it looks gigantic.
There are 9 people surrounding what seems to be the leader of the group.
A bunch of carts and carriages were parked a few meters away, the draught animals grazing nearby.
The group's clothes look cheap and outworn, some have daggers or small swords strapped to their sides,
some the tools of their profession.

The leader looks around himself, studying the faces of the others.
He then begins to speak, his voice sounding pressed and a little higher than you would expect it from a human male.
Well, he is no human male. He is a halfling, just like the other members of the group.
The halflings eyes lie on him, tensely listening to what he has to say.
"Mean tallfolks. Chasing halflings out of town! Say halflings steal and spy. Halflings never steal! Halflings borrow! Halflings bring back... most times!"
Some of the halflings are nodding in agreement, some murmur about their unfair treatment in human towns. The leader continues.
"Greenskins are dumb and stinky, and tallfolks don't chase them away. They don't want us because we are cleverer than them! They invent lies to make others hate us! But we will show them!"
Rejoicing. He tells them exactly what they want to hear. He knows how they feel. They come from different settlements across the land.
There are some villages and towns with larger halfling populations, but most of the time there are only a couple of halflings living in a human settlement.
They have a reputation for being thieves, spies, and of course responsible for all the bad things that happen to people all the time. Well, their race tends to be drawn to that kind of activies, but most halflings are normal, hard-working citizens.
Unfortunately, small villages with their superstitions and prejudices don't make it easier for halflings to live there in peace,
and so it happens that sometimes halflings from different villages form groups and head out into unclaimed land to find a new future for themselves.
This group is one of those.
"We will build our own town! Biggest halfling town, bigger than all tallfolks towns! We will show them!"
More rejoicing. There is no going back. They won't be welcome anyway, and so the only possibility is looking forward.
"Let's begin!"

Hello there. I've decided to start a new ISG (Illustrated Suggestion Game). It's a village/colony builder, like most of my other ones.
I hope you guys will enjoy it. :)

Before we start with the first turn, I would like you to choose a leader from the group.
You can vote for one of the halflings and if anything should be changed - the name, age, profession, if he has any special armor or weapon - whatever you like)

Reasons why Lelvyt should be leader
  • They have the best weapon out of all of them and decent armor
  • Weapons are good for killing things
  • She is a butcher, she can butcher our enemy's and inspire our own in a battle
  • She isn't too old nor to young so she wont die from old age any time soon
  • She has green hair, you gotta have green hair
  • She has one of the best names

As I said, you can alter the person if you want.

Also, the average lifespan of halflings is 150 years. At least that of my halflings ;)

For those of you that are interested:
Snodeddwir and Redbucirt are brothers.
Unklihuth and Togbyss are married and have a daughter, Fliraal.
Flivairwin and Klenzbyvem are married.
Those marriages happened under human law, you can always define your own laws and traditions for this halfling village.

And here you are. Founder Lelvyt. You like the sound of that.
Your speech turned out to be very encouraging and your people can't wait to get to work.
Flivairwin gives you a beautifully ornamented staff, the founder staff. Every founder or leader of a halfling settlement gets one, and this is yours!

You lead a group of 10 halflings (including you), all from different villages near the Western border of the kingdom.
Some have more, some have less useful professions, but everyone is more than eager to help.

The few possessions you and your fellow halflings gathered throughout your lives are stored nearby, in the carts and carriages you arrived with.
There are four hand carts and two small carriages and their draught animals.
The animals are peacefully grazing nearby, contentedly chewing on the sweet grasses.

What happens now is that Unklihuth Snigbig begins fishing, the founder slaughters the lone Llama, Klenzbyvem Glavalor makes us an awesome hat out of its fur, and the rest of the guys explore the surrounding area.

Also, what's going on with that rock to our south-east? It has strange stuff on it.

We should check/take stock of the resources we have in our carriages, that way we can know if we have building materials or not.

So what happens now?

It is a suggestion game. You suggest what should happen next, and at the end of the day I will take the suggestions, add a bit of randomness and make things happen.

"

Since I've never heard of Kender before, no. ;)

Most of the humans on this part of the world live in medieval-like societies. There are prejudices, superstition, low education. Humans see most other races as inferior, and while in communities with a large percentage of halflings those tendencies aren't as strong, they grow stronger the lower that percentage is. In a balanced community, there are as many halfling criminals as there are human criminals, and most halflings are normal people living their life. Another reason for their bad reputation in smaller communities is, that the halflings, due to the reasons mentioned above, are often being ignored and isolated by the humans and thus are more likely to turn to crime to get by.

About stealing and borrowing: For halflings it is common sense to share things with their neighbors. In a halfling community, people don't have to ask if they borrow things, and usually they bring them back when they are done using them. If they get destroyed or damaged, they will let the owner know. Unfortunately, many halflings tend to forget that humans don't handle things like halflings do, and so it happens quite often that a halfling "borrows" a tool, which the human interprets as stealing. That could add to the halflings reputation as thieves, but most of the time the "stealing" happens in good faith.

Day 2 - Taking stock
One of the reserved posts is the compendium, the other the turn overview.

I added two entries to the compendium, and everytime I explain something to you (about the world or the species or whatever),
I will add it to the compendium.I will also add animals to the compendium once you saw them and gave them a name.

Every halfling needs about 50 nutrition each day. Nutrition is shown in the ressource list. I will remove different foods, until I reach the required nutrition (500 right now). The less different food there is, the greater the chance that your villagers grow unhappy, and the less the chance for positive events to happen.

I will work on the ressource list. Maybe several spoilers for the different types. And I will add a sorting algorithm for it to my software.

The first day goes by quickly.
Most villagers are busy unpacking their stuff, and a handful halflings go exploring the surrounding area.
Unklihuth just unpacks her fishing rod and some worms she gathered on her way here and hurries to the close lake.
"Hopefully there are some big, tasty fishes in there!", she excitedly says out loud.

You think about taking down the tree nearby, but you are surrounded by forest, so there really is no need to cut down the only tree here.

You also think about slaughtering the beaked llama, considering that you cannot breed it and don't really need it to pull a carriage anymore.
You can't do that on the bare ground, though. Instead, you decide to take a closer look at that strange stuff growing on the boulder below your camp.

It seems to be some kind of lichen growing on the rocky surface. There are tiny, blue berries hanging from it, but you think it would be better to not try one right now. Maybe someone here has greater knowledge of plants and berries than you do.

The llama keeps chewing on the lush grass and doesn't seem bothered by your train of thoughts.

At midday, Deppuc Nensnifain, Klenzbyvem Glavalor, Redbucirt Dipri and Togbyss Snigbig formed two scouting teams, one heading to the North and the other to the South.
They should be back tomorrow.

As the day nears its end, the last things are unpacked.
You still use the crates and chests and carriages as storage since you don't have anything else,
but now everything is sorted and you know what's there.

Most halflings brought their working toolsets with them.
There's also a bunch of food, enough for a few days at least.
You should try to gather and eat fresh food before using the durable stuff, though.
There are some spare sets of linen clothing.
And then there are the valuables.
Some of your halflings brought things they couldn't sell before leaving.
There is a lot of well-made jewelry, some wooden figurines, a bunch of pretty hats,
some rare and valuable liqour bottles and even recipes and song lyrics.

Should there ever be a trader visiting you, you surely can buy a lot of stuff with some of these things as payment.

Aside from the things sorted and stored now, there are 2 medium-sized carriages, 4 medium-sized handcarts, 2 cloud oxen and 1 beaked llama.

"Lelvyt!", you hear Deppuc, the singer, calling your name.
He hurries towards you, a scroll of paper in his hand.
"Lelvyt, I brought this map with me. I think you should have it, since you are our leader now.. you know. The founder!"
He shows a slight smile, which he doesn't seem to do often.
You smile and thank him for the map before you take a look at it.

It seems to show your home kingdom, Arteura, and its neighbours to the South and East.
It even shows the unclaimed land to the West and the big forest, and even beyond!
It's only drawn roughly, you can't even find your clearing on it, but Deccup marked where you should be, more or less.

All in all it's not a bad start!

Also, what's going on with that rock to our south-east? It has strange stuff on it.
I'm more intrigued by the possibility that there's something underneath the central rock.

But if there's some way to move the rocks, the suggested first use for the felled tree (axe and saw used) is to use as rollers to try to move the rocks into a circle, the gaps between being small enough to reuse the logs and pile up soil (shovel) to form barricades/closable entrances in each of those gaps. Then get everything except the larger carriages (maybe useful gap-blockers/enteyways?) inside, upend the smaller carts (two each) against each other for basic shelter against rain for goods and villagers who need it.  Add leafy branches to further weatherproof and extend the coverage of the 'eaves'.

If the rocks are firmly immovable, we need a pick/chisel or equivalent, though. If the hammer isn't that kind of tool. See about (maybe) woodcarver Flivairwin making something from handy sized tree branches and whatever loose rock might be found?  If that can be done, start to create a low wall (aiming eventually to a broch-like communal building, if enough stone is available) from any haulable but still substantial stone lumps that don't have any other obvious use, such as being useful metal ores.

And five fancy hats?  Give a hat to anyone who takes on a leadership role or otherwise provides a major service in the founding or any other major phase in the settlement. They get to keep the hat (or take it with them to the grave) even if they are replaced, as a variation on permanent borrowing. If more hats are needed, more hats shall be made.  Wemhave the technology!

(Extended PTW. But all for your considerations.)

Oh well... I have to admit that there seem to be some similarities^^
My halflings are not that extreme, though.
Of course you can push this towards becoming a city of thieves and assassins or something like that, but that's definitely not what I had in mind when choosing halflings^^ (to be honest it was just a random decision, I just felt like "why not halflings?", and I will define them further with every question that comes up).

ps: gonna tweak the world map a bit, just color related stuff.

Also I did the math and I think we only have 2.5 days of food. Depending on what people find during their exploring butchering the livestock might be required to survive. In light of this we should use our leaders hatchet to chop down that tree so we can get our woodcrafter on making a workshop for butchering. We could take apart the carriages for resources but we can use those for sleeping until we get something more permanent.

Your halflings aren't THAT kind of halflings. And better don't ask them what that means. Forget I ever mentioned that. Halflings tend not to talk about "them".

The hatchet is actually a cleaver. My bad. But there will be hatchets, too.

I've been working on this every free minute the last couple of days. Coding away at a little tool I created for this and spending a lot of time with drawing stuff. I will probably post an update in a few hours or tomorrow.

Day 3 - Overhauled
Sorry for the pause.
I was working on background stuff for this a lot,
including a graphics overhaul, working on the toolset I'm coding for this,
and preparing a lot of stuff to lessen the work I have to do for each future update.

I hope you guys like the new look. ;)

The new base area is 2048x2048, I hope that's not too large to comfortably check out.

I've done some small changes to the items your group brought with them. There are now chisels and hammers and pickaxes and so on.
There also is food for 4 days (even 5 with the caught fishes), and you can now see the sum of the food item's nutrition in the food spoiler.

Enjoy!

In the morning, the scouts come back from their respective expeditions.
Most of the area seems to be quite peaceful and safe, looking basically just like the surroundings of your camp.
A few kilometers to the North, just before the forest begins, they found an entrance to a small cave, just a few meters in diameter.
The cave walls seem to show traces of some mineral, but they couldn't make out what exactly it was.
Fliraal offers to take a look, since she's the only one with any experience regarding metals.
About 1 kilometer to the South, there is a rather large area with loamy soil that could come in quite handy.
The clearing is dotted with groups of boulders and tress, and for more wood, you can simply go to the forest.
(The clearing is about 10 kilometers in diameter, you are in the center more or less)

Unklihuth caught 9 fishes over the day. There are 3 seaspears, long, white eels and 2 trident carps, named after their distinctive tails, both of which also live in the three borders sea.
The other two fishes though are new to her, there are 3 greenish fat eel-like things, and 1 formed kinda like a flat disc.
She suggests to flatten the center boulder and use it for butchering fish and other animals.

You decide to give the hats Klenzbyvem brought with him to the most important members of the group.
You just aren't exactly sure yet about who the most important members are. You should give that some thought. *looks towards the players*

Your people begin to try and move some of the boulders into a more useful formation.
This is gonna take a day, and probably not all of the boulders will be moveable.

You tell Flivairwin to help you cut down that tree. This will take a day (cutting and preparing it for further processing).

Your people have discovered two new animals.
One is a small rodent with moss green fur, the other looks like a mix of a tortoise and a monitor lizard. Neither seem to be aggressive and they don't even really seem to care about your presence.

Day 4 - It's taking shape
FYI: The posts are "snapshots" from midday. You can decide actions for the next day as well as for the rest of this one.

It has been hard work, but your halflings managed to build a small wall out of the not too big boulders in the area.
It will take much more for it to become a serious defence, but it is better than nothing.
As they were gathering the boulders, they examined the berries growing on the bushes.
There are those big, orange fruits, which smell and taste like a mix of peach and banana. They are very sweet and juicy.
Then there are the smaller, blue berries. They have a stinging smell and are very soft. Even the slightest touch damaged one, and the juices leaking from it leave a burning sensation. Water seems to be able to wash it off completely, though.

Not having any orders from you, they now do what they think needs to be done.
The Dipri brothers are taking some of the smaller stones and set up a fireplace.

Klenzbyvem and Togbyss are checking on the animals, making sure they are healthy.

After cutting that tree, you and Flivairwin keep processing it.
The twigs you gave to the Dipri brothers for the fireplace, and the boards you staple where you cut them, for now.
You will keep doing that until there comes up something more important.

Unklihuth, not getting any reply about that center stone from you, decides to take matters in her own little hands.
She spent hours carving that stone, using hammer and chisel, but she did it.
Now she's getting ready to butcher and dry those fishes and Jonyrkat, the pastry cook, decided to help her.

Deppuc, the singer, takes a closer look at that lichen growing on some of the boulders here.
They seem harmless to the touch, and unlike the blue berries from the bushes, the blue berries growing on them smell sweet.
He didn't dare to try one, though.

Fliraal decided to spend some time watching the mossy rodents.
They seem not frightened at all, even though they went closer together when your halflings started gathering the boulders.
They make weird sounds, like a donkey with an extremely high-pitched voice.
It almost seems as if they are talking to each other.

While setting up the wall, the halfings also moved the storage a bit.

Tasks for Day 5:
Fliraal Snigbig should go to the northern mine and try identify the mineral.
Unklihuth Snigbig and Lelvyt Ladnirt can to catch and butcher fish.
Togbyss Snigbig should shear the animals. If that's not possible then he can accompany his daughter to the cave.
Jonyrkat Knambyc can cook meals and preserve food.
Klenzbyvem Glavalor and Redbucirt Dipri should try to construct tents.
Flivairwin Glavalor should identify the trees in the clearing as well as the nearby forests. She should try to figure out the quality of wood they may provide and if they bear fruit, flowers, nuts, or sap.
Deppuc Nensnifain and Snodeddwir Dipri can forage for food. They should prioritize the big, orange fruits.

Hello Straw. Sorry for the late answer, I did not expect anyone to reply anymore after a few days.
Right now I'm focused on too many other things and won't be able to work on this.
Maybe I will continue working on it some day, but not at the moment.

ps: Thanks for your suggestions anyway, I really didn't expect this anymore :D

Hey Asgarus. It's all good. Though, if you don't already, I would recommend you use the "Show new replies to your posts." link to more easily keep track of new replies. As for this game, I got to say it's pretty cool, creative, and rather charming. I really liked how the characters would choose their own tasks if they aren't assigned any. It's frankly a shame that people stopped suggesting for whatever reasons. (Understandably people do get busy. It took me 2 days to get back to this. :P)

Good luck with your other endeavors. Keep it up.
