Title: Forces of the Aeons - A Worldbuilding Gridbased Game
Post by: Detoxicated on April 16, 2018, 04:54:04 pm
Welcome Bay12er.
In this game we will have a Grid set up by me in which different forces of nature work to create a world together. As soon as the grid is filled with tiles the next stage emerges but for now it works like this:
There is four sectors on the Grid.
A1-M13 known as Sector 1
A14-M26 known as Sector 2
N1-Z13 known as Sector 3
N14-Z26 known as Sector 4

There will be 13 Forces, 13 Players who play the game at this stage. If we can't round up so many players we will think of something.

To begin playing one must Submit a: I am in!
As soon as there is 13 players or in say two days we play the game. Once the required number is playing then I give you a random aspect. You play as a primordial force of this aspect and try to strengthen its existance on this new forming reality.
In each turn every player will submit FOUR landscapes on locations on the maps, giving correct coordinates. No land can be changed and altered once set. At least in this phase of the game.
The landscapes are in between existance and void, so as long as the land is not completed there will be no land on the planet. Once the world is created the players will get to create animals or species of plants, though it is asumed that while the world is still constructed there is earthlike plants to make the landscapes look like what they are supposed to look like.

The players may choose from this list https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_landforms#Landforms_by_process  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_landforms#Landforms_by_process) when creating their four landscapes per turn.

Spoiler: Gridmap (click to show/hide)

Please submit your entries :)

Edit: Thank you to the many forum game creators on the Bay12. Through the years I have played many games and experienced highly interesting stories or concepts and ideas played out. I also have witnessed the insanity. I would like to point out that I have taken inspiration from Gridhood12, Ye Gods Series, Titans of Creations, The Creators, the SPAM series and many more.

"I am in!"

I'd merge the five sensory forces into one Perception, as they are rather narrow.

There's also Lust but no Love, and Hope but no Faith.

If there aren't enough players, further merging of some of the forces into Energy and Matter would give the list some very broad options as well.

Sure, may as well. Even if we wait for another 5 people to join - though I'm not 100% clear on why we need that many people - it'll at least give us some time to think of what we should do when the game starts.

Okay once the last person joins we can start. Each turn I will give you a sector where you can place your four territories.
You may only place your territories in the sectors I name you, each turn the sectors get reshuffled by magic of RNG.

Alright.
In this spoiler you will see your personal sphere:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now this turn the sectors will be played like this:
Sector 1: Roseheart, Felissan, Maximum Spin, Glass
Sector 2: KingZultan, TamerVirus, MonkeyMarkMario (M³?)
Sector 3: 0rca_Tr0per, Crazyabe, IcyTea
Sector 4: Roboson, Pavellius, ManOfPaper

Each player now may create 4 territories within their sector. E.g.: Player1 creates a Mangrove at K1. A taiga at K2, another taiga at K3, and another taiga at K4. Since Player1 is in Sector1 this turn his picks all are valid.
Find infos on the sectors in OP!
Thank you for participating so far. There are secret mechanics which come into play as you layout the map so go for it. :D

Sorry for doublepost but a short 1.1 Update

1.1 Into the Deep and up in Heights
As reality unfolded as a grid, a force of water began painting it blue, deep blue. A majestic deep sea ocean trench has formed at N10-N13.
As if opposing the depth, a massive mountain range in the northeastern corner of the grid has been formed by a force of stone. The Mountain range occupies the spaces of A25-B26

Fire has arrived as a meteor. The crater can be seen at G1. Due to the meteor striking the planet volcanoes have sprung around the world. A volcano rises I4 and its fertile minerals turn quickly into a plain at I3. At M11 a volcanic Island comes into being.

Lightning has created fjords at J6, J7, H7, and I7.

Perception arrived shockingly cool. A sea ice strip is created from Z1-Z4.

Metal lays some caves at A14 and C26. A Karst bursts out of the ground due to a sneeze of Metal, the Karst is at C20. He takes a rest at a mountain and the place where he laid becomes a granite dome at B24.

Wood has come into existance manifesting as the tropical rainforests stretching over C5, C6, D6, D7.

Sound wants to be heard and therefore creates a massive super volcano at A15, A16, B15, B16.

Ghost creates oceanic trenches at N14, N15, N16, N17. Who knows what goes on down there.

Happiness creates the Continental shelf at N18, it has a nice colour. N19 is a wave-cut Platform for the populous to enjoy, just as the O19 Bay. The Glen of O20 has a nice colouration.

I hope you are enjoying this.

I still think 13 players is excessive, but *shrug*
They're all here now. Hypothetically. And I at least am enjoying this.
Could you just cut the last three out if they don't post or send you an explanation for why they haven't by the deadline?

Having 13 players makes the math that much easier.
Also maybe they waited for tactical reasons till most posted.
Maybe you all could vote for a Tile to be displayed in a more detailed fashion to pass time till 48 hours are done.

Please do a vote on a tile to highlight by an own dedicated 4x4 grid.

Of course you are. Make anything you want, though keeping in mind that your goal is to strengthen Air's existence and influence. Deserts and seas are windy, rainforests produce a lot of oxygen, mountains let people climb to the heavens...

It seems most players started with fairly extreme terrain. You can do so too, or get started on trying to find a balance between the highs and lows.

Remember that this game doesn't have a win condition at the moment, possibly ever, so don't worry about 'winning' and just have fun!

Update 2.0 - An Aeon Passed
At last a Dry Lake of massive proportions appeared at Y25,Y26,Z25, and Z26. A feeling of despair is coming from it.
Air has formed a mountain range at P23, two glens at P21 and P22, and a limestone pavement at P18.

Please post only within your sector.

Also: Why don't you all create one chaotic titan BEAST. Do it like dwarf fortress would, throwing geometrical shapes together with animals and strange natural weaponry. Don't worry about power level, the titan won't be able to destroy the world... Easily! Furthermore, when it comes to titan vs. titan later on I will use a general system to balance it out. This is not to be worried about now. So each of you create a titan based on the force you play. So say I'd play the force of Earth I'd maybe create an elefant that causes earthquakes with its huge nose and is of brown colouration as well as giant. Something like this. Also, these are TITANS, they are to be forces even gods have a hard time to deal with.

Sure.

Dense jungle erupts right up to the edge of the caldera across C15, C16, and C17.

In addition, M19 grows a mangrove swamp.

Now, in exchange, Glass, I'd like three tiles of arid grassland and desert in the vicinity of the corner playa, rich with cacti and Joshua trees and similarly Wood-appropriate resources. This seems like a good synthesis of our spheres.

Finally, let's see, about a titan...

Also I have to rule out the bottomless pit. It is just kind of ubreal... I already thought the massive volcano to be a stretch... Maybe go for deep cavy pits instead?

Happiness is willing to spread it's influence among the other forces, and so creates a Stratovolcano at D5, as well as Straths at C7, C8, and D8. All it demands is that a land be made that is visually appealing, perhaps on the level of a natural wonder.

Happiness also exerts it's influence enough to create a new form of life; the Titan "Üd, the Joybringer".

Volcanic field at U7, volcanic island at O13, O14, and P14 (as in, all one connected island); covered in foliage.

Name: Dragons
Description: Look a lot like Long, but much smaller, about the length of a football field. They can come in any color, but most (~60%) are some shade of red. As they move, they shed their scales, which are about the size of a normal sheet of paper; these scales give off a good deal of heat, but not an uncomfortable amount. Their eggs look like pearls, but glow the blue of exceptional heat. They are wholly immortal if they do not mate, but part of the mating process involves giving up a piece of their soul to create their children; each dragon can mate only three times before dying.
Personality: Aloof and peaceful, they typically just drift through the sky wherever, though it is easier to find them in warm areas, especially around volcanoes. That said, their coloration can be a key to figuring out where to find them - blue ones are drawn to water, white ones will shed their warmth among the cold lands, and green ones can frequently be found amongst jungles. They do not mind being touched, but will roll over to dismount anyone that tries to ride them.

At B3 and B4, a temperate rainforest transitioning into boreal on its north side.
At B5 and B6, a temperate rainforest transitioning into tropical on its south side.

Name: Shetyuim
Description: Great slow-moving tortoises (about the size of the largest real tortoises, that is) with wooden shells that sprout small forests over time. The shells are highly movable and can even be removed with relatively little harm to the animal, but regrow very slowly.
Personality: Shetyuim (singular shetiyu) are extremely slow by nature, living many centuries and not changing much over them. They mate more readily than our tortoises, however, their population being limited mainly by their slow development rather than low birth rate; indeed, shetyuim must spend at least a decade buried in soft soil just to hatch from their eggs. (These eggs appear to be made of polished wood and are often highly valuable, and, even if removed from the soil for many years, can still hatch if replaced.) They relish rain but fear fire due to their vulnerability to it, so prefer to remain near water so that they can submerge themselves if threatened. On the other hand, they are fairly resilient against predators and therefore have little fear of other animals, though they will learn quickly if harmed.

Nah sectors stay sectors. You have your sector so play there... Just dont do it again i have my reasons to randomize it...

Anyone else who played out of sector?

Because it makes sense to be able to make forests. Not all land areas are defined just by the shape of the land.

I figure it's the same as making sure there's a river going through your tile: it's an extra feature that can probably be added later but is possible to toss on now.

As for Happiness, it cuts a canyon with a river through F1, F2, G2, H2

As for the animal...

all meaning: 1. every one of, or the complete number of: 2. the whole: 3. completely

"See list of landforms with no plant related entries? There is all you can create."

This is surely my own ocd more than a real problem with game design. But unclear instructions with the illusion of set paramaters, is like trying to play pin the tail on the ever expanding ass.

Post by: IcyTea31 on May 01, 2018, 07:37:13 am
What roseheart is on about is how people are creating forests and other landforms not on the Wikipedia list. I don't have a problem with the list not being absolute; after all, we were asked to create landscapes, not merely landforms, so the list works better as a source of ideas than a constraint. The game is co-op either way (at least for now), so it doesn't really matter if someone tries to abuse slightly flexible rules.

Post by: Detoxicated on May 01, 2018, 08:42:18 am
Sure. Sad to see you go...
I actually wanted you to create tiles so later on we can play on them. The only reason i put sectors is because i wanted it to get mixed up...

To make things clear: You may create landscapes of any kind if it is naturally plausible. So forests and grasslands are fine too... Later on, when the map is filled titans come into play.

FROM NOW ON SECTORS ARE NOT RELEVANT ANYMORE. YOU GUYS MAY CREATE ANYWHERE AFTER THIS ROUND.

So you want to quit roseheart?  Please let me know soon because if you want to quit i can give the spot to someone else.

How about this:
We quit my nonesense sector system and everyone gets to choose where to build what. Only 2 tiles per post. If nothing happened for 12 hours you may post again and I will update as I see fit. I keep track of the tiles and as soon as the world is filled we can go with the titans. What do you guys think about this suggestion of mine?

Its just that I have underestimated the power of 13 players. I cannot expect for them all to follow this at all times, but at the same time I want the story and world to progress. Really I would like the forces become creative with the lands they create.

How's this: if people don't post, you'll randomly distribute their tiles to the other players; tiles distributed this way are bound to the inactive player's sector, not that of the receiving player. Aside from that, all mechanics stay the same. Sound good?
Can we get a poll?
Title: Re: Forces of the Aeons - A Worldbuilding Gridbased Game
Post by: Maximum Spin on May 08, 2018, 08:55:20 pm
I mean, as far as I can tell, only one person failed to comprehend it. And I think you get more creativity, not less, by constraining the players to visit different areas and consequently different landscapes; without that, you often just get... well, a single blot of dry lakebed spreading like a tumour, or maybe one player deciding to freeze over a single corner of the map to the exclusion of any other actions, cough cough. It's better to force those kinds of tumorous habits to metastasize across the map, don't you think? :P

Hmm, the thing is i have always planned for the forces to become titans or gods after a while fundamentally changing the game. The mechanics are for later use of magic random events mutations etc... If you insist we can keep the old aspects though notice that eventually you will change apect anyway...

What do you say?

Ok so basically as the tiles were created by Forces they also gained a trait apropriate to the one who created it which is why i was so upset when the sector thing got messed.

Anyway, as I see it the world has aged and now new types apear. Gods and titans. Hence the civ and nature thing.
Again we could also finish up the last phase though then Id prefer an aspect reroll for randomness.

After a long period of waiting, new titans emerged. Born from this planet they are more intertwined with it.
For 3 FP they may create a new regular tile.
For 1Fp they may add a mundane feature to an existing tile (e.g.: A huge mountain, or a red sediment making the water in the area look red)
For 3 Fp they may add a magical feature to an existing tile (e.g.: A fountain of healing)
For 5fp they may create an entirely magical tile. The creator's aspect will influence the tile one way or another.
For 2fp a titan can teach one individual a skill his tribe knows to a journeyman level
For 5fp a titan can teach one individual a skill his tribe does not know.

Please enter a name for your titan.

Titans listen to tribal prayer at the beginning of each turn, and know what the people need and want and may want to act upon it.
Each titan begins with 10fp and gains 1fp per turn. If something happens and it is related to one's aspect then more fp can be gained. Worship from tribes also generates fp for a titan.

Spoiler: Settlements (click to show/hide)
((ooc: If you are unhappy with your aspect you can reroll NOW. Later on I won't accept it. Take note that I want you to grow as titans so you will gain a new aspect as addition at a later point))

Name: Amaranth

Could we get some markers on the map showin where the settlements are? It would make things easier to visualize.

Anyway:
3 FP for making the river water at F5 magically clean, clear, and fertility-inducing, allowing the local Prain - the only settlement of that people - to have he people needed to spread themselves and their culture elsewhere.
3 FP on O14 to make it that whenever the volcano erupts, while the area may be burnt to ashes now, it is guaranteed to grow back thicker, lusher, and more colorful than before.
1 FP at C6 to make the trees there bear more and tastier, albeit perfectly mundane, fruits.
1 FP to make S20 particularly aesthetically pleasing, though still perfectly mundane. all the stone in S20 to bright white, shining marble.
There, let's make some culture!

Okay. To make it more pleasing you add a feature that is pleasing. E.g. In the northeast you can see The Stonebow, a rock formation that looks like a big gateway. Making it more beautiful as modifier is boring and doesnt add richness to the world.

Fair enough. Give me a moment to do alterations.

The Titan of Inspiration takes on the name of Mustim (Muse+Stimuli)

3FP used to Create a flat grassy plain at O21
3FP used to Enchant the skies to be permanently clear at night at O21, allowing lesser beings to gaze into the stars in contemplation whenever they wish.

The Titan of Twilight decides that they shall need a name for the beings of this world to call them by.

They decide upon the name O'ryanin

I pour my energy into creating a river at B22 for 5 FP

mystery box of twilight!

Spoiler: The Map (click to show/hide)

On the appearance of the first sapient tribes, Amaranth was born from the hard work of tribal toolmakers.
Immediately they decided to ease the creation of culture in various places. They infused the river at F5 with immense cleanliness, and fertility. Then they went to the volcano of O14 and gave the plantlife there, the ability to regrow in magma burnt land at an alarming rate. Then they gave the trees of C6 more taste. Finally they made the rocks at O20 marble rock.

Inspired by the act of Amaranth, the Spark of Inspiration Mustim appears. Imediately they create a flat grassy plain at O21. They then enchant the skies to be permanently clear at night.
Upon gazing the night sky Amaranth realizes that there is no stars yet. (You unlocked a feature: for 3fp you can create a constellation. You need to apply name only.)

The absence of stars however also created another titan. O'ryanin the Titan of Twilight. He imediately creates a river at B22. Strangely this river and its surrounding area seem to be way darker than normal even in broad daylight.

------------------------------------

The River Flyers have astoundingly a high fertility rate this year. They prosper.
Fighting erupts when the Lizards of West meet the Arrival at O14. The Arrival is victorious and the Lizards lose their squad. A mood of aggression strikes both people.
More people meet. At C6, Laughter Echo(H), Sneaky Seed (H), Unity of One(H), and Murder Pride(H) all arrived at the lush garden forest of C6. Hell broke lose as basically all rules of first contact protocol have been broken by all sides. The fight between the squads is fierce and bloody, but it is clear that the Murder Pride takes pride in murder. They managed to kill the entire squad of Unity of One, managed to kill a few of Sneaky Seed while leaving the rest wounded, while Laughter Echo managed to ride away with only a few scratches. The Murder Pride has gathered many fruits today and will prosper.

Cliffside City dwellers have taken up Masonry and Sculpting. But who brought them the marble?
Members of the Forest Fort have wandered onto the plains of O21. The lack of stars makes them feel sad and they ponder about the creator of this newly discovered plain.

Some Itracs of the Flight of Valley flew off to B22 and have not returned.

Amaranth

C16: the trees now grow with white-and-black-striped bark, like that if the zebramen to either side. They remain mundane.

O'ryanin

Seeing the wonderful land they created, O'ryanin explores the darkened forest.

As he looks up through the canopy of trees, he sees an empty sky.

This... makes him feel empty. The very thing he embodies is a void of nothing.

Create Constellation "Lost Hunt". A group of Itracs that look similar to the group that became lost in the forest for 3 FP

As the stars are made, O'ryanin realizes he has walked in circles for quite a while. He creates a small orb of star-light, to guide himself out.

Add Magical Effect "Stellar Guide". A small globe of star-light that leads lost creatures out of the forest.

The titan of metallurgy takes the name Fotron III.

He spends 5FP to create a mountain with large amounts of metal ore at T21.
He then spends 3FP to create a beach at O18.

Ninja'd by fantastic timing, hahaha

Mustim wanders across the plains it created and alters the world further.

3FP to spring forth a Tree of Knowledge near the Forest Fort in P21, whose plump, slightly bitter fruit grants a burst of creative energy to those who consume it.
3FP to create a Constellation in the form of the Tree of Knowledge.
