You heard me. My first elf traders actually brought useful stuff to my game. I was actually surprised at first, but they brough clothing, birch wood, barrels, and BEER. you heard me. ACTUAL BEER. to celebrate thsi monumental happening, i took some screen shots.

Is there anyway ot make sure that they keep bringing stuff that like this?

Elves touched that beer.
Would any self respecting Dwarf touch that.
I think not.
-
How many bins of cloth did they have? They always seem to have too many bins of cloth.
-
LIke 5 or 6, still.
-
Bah!
Still the same 'ol elves... Likely diluted the beer with cloth.

actually, i think i found the elusive "Not such b*stards" Elven race.

I can SELL that shoe, you know. its COMPLETY worth the life of a mere peasant.
-
There can always be more peasants. Always.
Check legends. Are you sure the elves were never conquered?
They have to be part human to be this co-operative.
-
hrmm... maybe. i really dont' look through legends. but i suppose i'll give it a shot.
by the way, you're quote worthy.
-
Elves can be useful, but only if they bring kosher wood and exotic animals and sunberries. Otherwise, what good are they? A couple bins of cloth any fortress could make themselves?
I must be different from all the other DF players, though, since I let the elves leave with their lives when they bring junk.
-
I haven't wiped out an elfy caravan YET. But that's because one fort caught fire before the drowner got used, and another had an exterior depot.
Next fort I have that works, I will set up a pumped drowner from day one. Maybe with optional roasting facilities.
-
i've never actually killed the elves when they entered my fortress. I just let them go. its bad for business to have TWO races wanting to kill you and besieging your fortress. so they wind up living.
-
Guys, it is bearable to 'trade' with these things, I jack their stuff after some donation ( boink, and then there is an envy complex ( Fucking elves and their ideals of purity ( My dwarves always get a free ride from their ladies ( I just need to lock away the females during their visits ) ) ) ) , and then I send them on their way, I use the booze as reserve, and the cloth and dye is used to make things that I can sell to the dwarves for binge ( traders are happy when you buy them out, and donate generously, thus you get cheaper things, and you get a greater chance of getting a dwarven king ) .

Nope. And if you try, it'll only ensure that they go back to bringing nothing but cloth.

Cloth and hundreds of toy hammers. Along with some Mugs and a roast or two.

so, what if i just buy them out? what happens then?
-
It seems to me if you buy something over and over, they bring more of it. I've never actually tested this or kept any records so it's hardly solid information, but if you just buy the useful stuff year after year maybe they will stop bringing so much cloth and bring more booze/animals.
Then again more likely it's just the RNG and confirmation bias.
Edit: if you really want, you can mod them to send a trade rep like the other races do. I *think* you add the [MERCHANT_NOBILITY] tag to them in the raws but I don't remember for sure - search the modding forum if you want more info. I tested it and it worked and didn't seem to break anything so it's something to consider but I'm pretty sure it requires a world regen.
-
I remember trading with elves and I had to bring out the bin. Instead of trying to give them the bin, I did "down, enter, down, enter, down, enter, down, enter, etc." and tried trading. Fucking elves noticed the ONE pine earring in the bin full of stop crap. I needed the stuff they brought (beer and cloth) so... screw it... "s."
-
Am I the only one who just uses the elves to dump off crap I don't need?

They bring nothing but cloth.
Seriously, I tried it, and that's what happened.

It does work that way for Humans and Dwarves, and in theory works with Elves as well. However, it can sometimes fail to work with Elves, and even if it does, you need something useful to buy from them in the first place. It can take decades trying to get them to bring useful stuff when you can only buy a single (wild strawberries [5]) each year.
-
thats just it. there's DOZENS of things i can get from them right now.
-
Yeah. I've never encountered the whole "OMG nothing but cloth" thing. They always bring booze and berries, at least. Most of the time, they also bring a fuckton on wood, too, which is always great.
-
i remember the elves sometimes had a caravan loaded with only cloth and wood, but i haven't encountered one recently.
-
Agreed on the "bring wood" part. even with tons of trees outside, when the elves are here buying wood ist just way more comfy.
As for the bringing of useful stuff. maybe you have discovered a dwarven-elf hybrid race... dwelves...
ask them for wood anvils :D
-
Am I the only one who just uses the elves to dump off crap I don't need?
Nop, but again, trading is all about selling crap usually. ;D
-
i got so pissed off with the elves for only bring cloth 5 years in a row on one fort so i locked them in a room til they went insane... coincidentally all the females ran around ripping off their clothes and all the males+animals went berserk or killed themselves when i let them out... lol got some killing and a adult show.
-
Speaking of naked elven women, can prisoners be sold?
You'll never see elven wrestlers the same way again. Or that tallow stockpile for that matter
-

no, they cant'.
-
I bet that beer is light.
-
I bet that beer is light.
thats no way for a dwarf to talk! Beer is beer, man! Be it light, dark, or filled wiht cloth, beer is beer!
-
several hundred fortresses ago I had elves actually bring a liaison. (good god I wish I'd kept that save)
I have no idea what combination of stuff led to that, but I was ordering sun berries and grizzly bears by the wagonload.
-
someone needs to mod in a way to smelt all that cloth... into ASH - or is there a non-mod way to do this with clever routing of magma and fire?
I then have something non wood derived to feed to my glassmaking industry, and I get a BIN! woo!
Also, then I don't have to kill all the cannibal hippies. I can sell them whatever armor the goblins leave behind... that isn't covered in blood, or vomit, or entrails or whathaveyou.

actaully, in the latest version, you can sell them that stuff cvoered in blood/vomit, ect.
-
Even with the reactions improvements in the next version, I don't think a 'smelt cloth, any cloth' task is possible. Sure if you want to waste time making individual tasks I guess
The ash in the game is wood ash mind you, I'm not entirely sure the ash from clothes would be of actual use. You could probably make them turn into smoke. Or at least vomit

Sun beries are very useful for outdoor forts. Their high drink value negates the lack of a legendary dining room and they can be farmed all year round iirc.
