DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Is there a way to name farm animals?

Long as you're using dfhack, there's always autonestbox...

9. play this fortress for the next 1000 years until all that is left are goblins and necromancers. lower popcap to 1, emtomb a dwarf named 'Durin' who has also been turned into a vampire.
No no no, this literally where the circus comes from.

Quote
"Moria! Moria! Wonder of the Northern world! Too deep we delved there, and woke the nameless fear. Long have its vast mansions lain empty since the children of Durin fled. But now we spoke of it again with longing, and yet with dread; for no dwarf has dared to pass the doors of Khazad-dûm for many lives of kings, save Thrór only, and he perished."

Durin's folk breached a candymithril spire. After much slaughter they were forced to abandon. Thorin earned his epithet Oakenshield during a siege on Moria (in retribution for Thrór's death and desecration), where they won the battle but took too many casualties for a reclaim attempt. Balin, Ori, and Óin perished in another reclaim. The key to this recreation is running the rest of the civilization, not the fortress once it's built.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Show me your cool central rampway designs
« on: December 15, 2022, 02:05:36 pm »
Here's one I developed and have come to love. The major theme is "massive overkill." The secondary theme is "trying to look like a pinwheel instead of a swastika."

Here's the basic design.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here's the next level, which is smoothed because I happen to have gotten around to smoothing that level.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here's an aboveground level, carved into the corner of a cliff, with a tower built around it. The center is channeled for power transmission purposes. On the left is wagon access. Wagon access can also be achieved by removing the inner ramps and adding an outer set, but that does add a lot more walking distance for foot traffic.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It looks like it could waste a lot of navigation time, but in practice it really doesn't seem to. This is partly because dwarves never get in each other's way on it. The outer rings are really just for show and don't see a lot of use unless they're in the direction of a destination.

Nothing grows above ground in a mountain biome. Try putting a farm plot in the grassland area. Also, try gathering plants there.

Only underground crops, the six kinds you can embark with, grow underground. You can harvest more of those from the caverns.

Is dfhack.world.cur_year_tick_advmode working as intended?

You mean df.global.world, not dfhack.world, right? cur_year_tick_advmode only exists in the former. Those variables are set by DF, not DFHack. They "work as intended" by definition. It's just that we might not fully understand what they mean.
Bleh. I was in fact thinking of df.global.cur_year_tick_advmode. Too many similarly named places and too much staring at them in the last few days. Think I was thinking of functions like dfhack.world.ReadCurrentTick(), which would be under your control and could theoretically be pointing at the wrong thing.

Is dfhack.world.cur_year_tick_advmode working as intended? Instead of giving the number of adventure mode ticks from the beginning of the year like dfhack.world.cur_year_tick, it's giving the number of ticks since the adventurer was created. There doesn't seem to be an obvious tick counter that can be used to find the current time in adventure mode.

My goblins are getting drunk, and I don't know how. I don't have a tavern keeper because they had proven to be too lightweight to hold their liquor. But I just had one start a drunken brawl, and now I checked one who was flashing and she turned out to be dizzy and nauseous, and she's "unfettered after drinking".

Goblins don't eat or drink by themselves, which is a huge problem with keeping them. So I don't know who's slipping them the good stuff, but somebody is.

If you've got a mayor with bad mandates, you can just assign a different one. Don't export their stuff that year, though, it still counts as a crime. And it's always useful to go through your dwarves looking for anybody who doesn't like any items, so you'll know who to recommend for barony.

The reason some are not used for armour is their awful material properties. This is relevant if you get a moody armoursmith who demands metal bars. Be careful to ensure they get bronze or better. A tin helmet is pretty useless despite being an artifact.
Likewise, a gold boot or sword is terrible. But a gold war hammer from a mood is awesome, and platinum is even better. Heavy things thump better.

If you have war animals that are pretty massive, they can help out in those off-screen battles.
Huh, I didn't know that. Guess those war rhinoceroses were worth the effort.

I've done very little with raids and such, but I learned that the only daughter of one of my dwarves, a widow who was still dreaming of raising a family, had been kidnapped as a child and had grown up to become the Lady of the Fly of Blazes, the government of the dark fortress Werebeguiler. Werebeguiler was ruled by a slate gray demon and had a couple thousand trolls and beak dogs on top of the goblin population. So, just to see what would happen, I sent my entire diminutive militia after them: about ten assorted Lords and ten more recruits, plus a bunch of war dogs and a handful of war rhinoceroses, to demand their surrender.

Which, to my bewilderment, they did.
Something slightly weird is happening.

Gamelog.txt has the following entry from 22nd Moonstone, 259: "`Ruined by the Shiny' Fikodorrun, duchess of Natureworks cancels Make pearlash: Needs 1 potash." (I have a script that timestamps each date change. Also I don't like gem setting as a moodable skill, can you tell?)

On 26th Opal, 259, The Fly of Blazes of The Jackal of Scenarios surrendered Werebeguiler to The Book of Twilight.

Gamelog.txt has the following entry from 12 Granite, 260: "`Ruined by the Shiny' Fikodorrun, duchess of Werebeguiler cancels Make pearlash: Needs 1 potash." (Right about this time I was tearing down a huge section of wall that was made of potash instead of quartzite.)

I didn't see an announcement that said that her position had changed. I couldn't find anything in the log, so I dove back into legends. And legends says this about `Ruined by the Shiny' Fikodorrun: "Related Entities: The Brown Rack (duchess of Werebeguiler, 254 to present)".

So...history has been rewritten. It may be meaningful that on 18 Granite, 260, the king and his entourage arrived at Natureworks, but then it may not, I don't know. Pretty sure it would have been a big surprise to anyone at Werebeguiler in 255 that they had a duchess, though.

I've only tried once, and succeeded. I just asked them to surrender, and they did, and then they beheaded the demon.

Huh. The High Treasurer of the local human civ, who I just negotiated a deal with for some snazzy rhino leather, and who happens to be a goblin, is assigned a bed in my fortress. Seems he's married to a goblin bard who has been employed as a lounge singer in my tavern for years. I guess that's one way to keep a long distance relationship going.
