Shield blocking: Dwarves vs Humans?
« on: March 15, 2007, 08:29:00 pm »

Are humans somehow intrinsically better blockers than dwarves? I ask because when I played human adventurers, bowmen (even elite ones) pretty much ceased to be a problem once shield skill was at Legendary; nearly all arrows would be blocked, and the ones that didn't would glance away.

I just started a dwarven adventurer to go plunder my fortress, and even though i've got legendary shield skills and an adamantine shield, even a regular goblin bowman was able to get a hit on my head and poke an eye out on his third arrow.

What gives?

This might have something to do with an earlier post.  That dwarf will now have the "gnarled factor" which is what happens when they lose an eye.  They become better than humans and elves.

Ah, the "grizzled veteran of a thousand bloody battles" phenomenon. Well, I hope it counts for something, or as it is I'm going to have trouble clearing kobold caves (which were never a problem with humans..)

On the other hand, my adamantine battle axe is totally sweet. A limb goes flying off with every hit, just about guaranteed.  :D

I prefer the adamantine shortsword (2) with full adamantine armour

Could have something to do with the size stat.

Yeah, I figured it might be size-related, but if anything it should be the other way around!
Small size = harder to hit, easier to hide behind a shield, etc.
