I forgot to dorf myself. There is an engraver in the fort, I would like to be him. Also, Linkxsc want's to be dorfed. So be sure to dorf him, Because I forgot.
Ouch, that was rather rude of me.

Had a quick look at the fort. Are you aware that we have no metal ore to mine at all? Checked it with prospect.

Odd, I used dfhack's embark assistant, and it said their were metals.

Ok. Embark assistant might not be completely reliable. Personally I don't mind, in fact it sounds like a fun challenge to make steel out of goblinite instead. There's plenty of marble, that's visible without cheating.  :P

Downloaded the save. First thing I did was extracting the legends for viewing, using this method:

https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/7mu1vo/pro_tip_you_can_view_and_export_legends_mode/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/7mu1vo/pro_tip_you_can_view_and_export_legends_mode/)

The fortress is located in Sil Dakon, the Plane of Omens. The place is living up to its name. A continent surrounded by a giant evil ocean. It is populated with 60k goblins and countless undead. We are part of the Old Ink, one of six surviving dwarven civilizations. The rest of our civilization resides in the relatively calm south, but we settled our new fortress in a region to the east (red circle), absolutely infested with goblins. A little to the west looms a Necro tower. The "dwarf settlements" to the southeast have been taken over by goblins over in the year 24. It is currently the year 165.

(https://i.ibb.co/ZXFrSWb/Plane-of-Omens.png) (https://ibb.co/7CZDQ20)

The local region is the "Sea of Fortune", an inland sea. The majority of the sea is of neutral alignment, but our 1x1 subregion is evil. It rains "repellent mucus".

The top level of the fortress, start of the turn. For some reason there is a giant cave toad mangled partial skeleton rotting in a pool of giant cave toad blood, in front of the gate. Our starting Yak is grazing the repellent mucus fields, yikes. We need to put him out of his misery. Two harpies are harping about.

(https://i.ibb.co/1XbMtsL/top.png) (https://ibb.co/fNQ9z82)

There is a 3x3 main stairs. It passes through two layers of aquifer. One of those layers houses our turkey farm.

(https://i.ibb.co/kBdNp12/stairs.png) (https://imgbb.com/)

Water from the aquifers is raining down the stairs, creating a nice shower to clean our dwarves of mucus. It drains away in a well at the bottom. The well takes water from a pool in the caverns. First thing I'll do is to secure the well with a grate, to prevent flying forgotten beasts from entering through the well.

Started my turn. Nicknamed the engraver to "ObsidianSword" (ObsidianShortSword is too many characters, sorry). He likes borax, rose gold, gray chalcedony, amber, quivers, cats, ballista parts and the sight of the Clam of Lobsters. Prefers to consume anchovy, tomatilla wine and rye seeds. Hates snails.

Unpaused the game to see the stairs waterfall in action. Not a minute later I get a notification. The fun has started. I guess my plan to butcher the yak before something worse happens to it failed. :-\

Paused the game. Before I continue I need to know what the levers do. I am worried about the hatch on the roof.

@ObsidianShortSword: Could you please explain how this works?

The dwarfy thing to do would be to pull the levers one by one and note what they do.  Privately, of course; better to let subsequent overseers learn for themselves.

I regularly have 5000 dwarves max as my limiter so that the fort will grow organically.  I think the biggest I've ever been able to maintain was 2k dwarves or so?  Love to get the various "clan" lineages of dwarves who all have matrilineal surnames (since dwarves don't have to be married to have kids any more).  I set up my matriarchs of each "clan" with impressive suites and nobility jobs, turn off all labours other than crafts and watch them enjoy the pinnacle of life together.  Queen bees...

One of them is called the "Depot Lever", And the other one is called the "Entrance lever".

Thank you. So the hatch is not connected to a lever.

Can the undead enter through the hatch? I never build hatches. According to the wiki it works a bit like a door. I'm pretty sure they can climb unto the roof.

edit: okay, I see that the hatch is locked. Well, I will just pray that I understand this correctly and unpause then. If the undead do manage to crawl in, I wouldn't know how to prevent a complete wipe, in any case.

Granite 12, 116

I.. have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is that we're still alive. Most of us, at least. And the necromancer outside didn't raise a single corpse yet, for some reason.

The bad news is that the corpses outside are piling up fast. Two harpies, one stray yak (poor thing), a giant mosquito, a giant cave toad, a bunch of cavies. All the wildlife is being murdered.
And, uhm, one dead carpenter by the name of Thob Rakustathel. :-[ I'm sorry. I never build drawbridges that have length 1 in the direction they are raised, and those look exactly the same open and closed with my tileset. So I was convinced that both drawbridges were closed, when the one leading to the Trade Depot was open.

On the bright side, his sacrifice allowed us enough time to correct my mistake. Both drawbridges are firmly locked now, and I learned how they work. I suppose that is good news too.

Slate, 18.

The siege has been repelled with the use of overpowered cunning traps. We caught six living dead of various types in cages and the others ran off. Even undead can be cowards.

Unfortunately, we were unable to prevent Zuntir the Outpost Liasion (and fish cleaner) from committing suicide at the first opportunity. He insisted on leaving immediately and ignored our urgent warnings that the trap hall was not a safe exit. Our expedition leader begged him to be a little more patient, but he wouldn't listen. One more corpse to bury.

Remove the spaces between url = http.....
It should just be url=http.....

Also for Smallhands, I placed some brief world information first, then the turns, and finally information for the players such as rules. I've also seen important notes in that section such as lever guides.

Hematite 11, 166

The siege is over, the dead (carpenter and outpost liason) have been buried. The undead have been stripped of their weapons, including a steel hammer, steel spear and steel short sword.

@Linkxsc: as you requested a dorfing, I named a miner after you. "Linkxsc" Cattensacat the miner likes sheep wool, sheep and short swords.

New migrants arrived safely and three new babies were born.

A stonecrafter was possessed. I was forced to melt down our steel weapons that we just acquired from the undead, it was the only way to satisfy his need for metal bars. Here's what we got for it:
(https://i.ibb.co/hFkHFD3/earring.png) (https://ibb.co/Sw20wRF)

And here are the prisoners. Two sunless ghouls, one sacred meadow, one warrior of Smuksmumosnun and two elf corpses.

A sacred meadow? You mean we captured a priest?
Title: Re: Dashringed, A 1x1 succesion game!
Post by: Quarque on June 26, 2022, 05:43:07 am
A sacred meadow is some sort of intelligent undead. This one used to be a dwarf (leftmost cage).

Finished the turn. Savegame: https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=15979 (https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=15979)

Two more dwarves died, while I was fighting bins. They were hauling items from a dump, while other items were being dumped from above. One of them was killed by a falling shield, another by a falling earring. By the way, the bins won. Two of them still contain an artifact that I didn't manage to remove.

I breached the second cavern layer. A bunch of troglodytes entered the fortress. They were outnumbered by the dwarves and quickly killed. All caverns are sealed now.

State of the fortress:
* I moved stuff from the general stockpile just below the surface to specialized stockpiles further down. This area has been walled off as a safety measure, because trees may punch holes in the top layer. See: https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8469 (https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8469)
* We have a functioning hospital. It has a well, soap, beds and everything.
* The entrance is protected with a trap hall. The three levers, from left to right: outer airlock, atom smasher, inner airlock.
* Near the dining room is an item dump with atom smasher (operated by the nearby lever) to get rid of crap.
* There's simple 1x3 bedrooms, enough for the time being.
* We are now at 23 adult dwarves, 9 babies and 3 lame artifacts.
* We do not yet have any sort of cloth industry.
* We have yet to dig down to magma. I built a smelter that runs on cokes, for now.

Delphonso, good luck!

A sacred meadow is some sort of intelligent undead.

I thought 'sacred' is used only in priest titles, not in int undead names, so maybe they're an (intelligent) undead priest? (Or, more likely, I'm just wrong...)
Title: Re: Dashringed, A 1x1 succesion game!
Post by: delphonso on June 26, 2022, 10:48:23 pm
According to Legends - Momuz Sakrithfikod is a priest and also...still alive. Horrible mistake there locking her up as an undead.

Sacred meadow is a title in The Doctrine of Dresses - who I have to assume would have some qualms about their priest being undressed and stuffed in a cage.
Title: Re: Dashringed, A 1x1 succesion game!
Post by: Quarque on June 26, 2022, 10:54:41 pm
My bad for assuming! Though she did fight alongside the undead.
I guess the warrior of Smuksmumosnun could also be a living creature, then?
Title: Re: Dashringed, A 1x1 succesion game!
Post by: delphonso on June 26, 2022, 11:58:01 pm
Yeah, experiments I think are randomly generated whether they are living or not (i.e., targetted by anything opposed to life), though the descriptions suggest they never really died, but were just magically transformed.

Anyway, the save runs and works. Didn't get to play this break, but I'll dig in soon. Just gotta figure out what to do with my turn.

Started playing. Haven't done a ton worth note - a small fort which runs pretty fast goes by quicker than I'm used to (even though I tend to go 2x2 or the forbidden 1x3).

Mostly cleaning up, upgrading rooms, and labeling levers. Trying to get a infinite metal works going, but we'll see. Setting up a larger military to benefit from that metal loop, too. It has 4 babies in it.

No worries. I got the military all set with metal weapons and pierced another cavern. About a month or two left, so just cleaning up any of my mistakes for the next overseer. I'll write up a longer report when I'm done (maybe during the weekend.)

It flew by pretty quick, but part of that was me milling about trying to figure out a project to start. I figured the best path to get to magma would be to first have a military capable of not losing the fort to a cave toad or something and then seeking it out. Once I had that goal in mind, it was much more engaged - a lot of pausing and resuming.
Title: Re: Dashringed, A 1x1 succesion game!
Post by: delphonso on July 02, 2022, 06:06:42 pm
A 1x1 fort tends to be pretty sleepy, overall - since the distance from map-edge to murdering your favorite dwarf is so short, people tend to play pretty defensively. I am no different, so I turtled like hell.

Here's a run-down of what happened this year:
Sold off some junk and crafts to humans and elves. The humans were kind enough to drop off a bronze trap component that I was able to melt and reforge enough times to make 10 bronze battle-axes. Once that was done, we dived deeper into the next cavern layer - it looks very cool. Bloodthorn only, red muddy floors and a it itself is a vertical piercing dagger aimed at the fort proper.

I built a little antechamber for sending the squad into that cavern layer, the lever is in the training room.

I did a bit of cleaning up. I allowed a few bins in some places, much to Quarqe's chagrin, I'm sure. Mostly this was because the Leather Bins from the dwarves were just sitting in the depot and I figured it'd be better to put them inside than let them be stolen by a giant kea or something.

I labeled the 1xn bridges as such so it's clear which way the lever should be pointed to determine if they're open or closed.

I built a small temple which has immediately become a huge success. It's crammed full of people, but hey - at least they're not having sex any more.

That last part is important because currently, we've got... 18 kids in our fort of 40 dwarves. The ratio was a bit better until twins were born right at the end of my turn.

I set up two cages in the training room - one filled with mongooses who kept wandering into our traps and the other houses the Sacred Meadow. I allowed the military to have some live practice on the mongooses, but when I was going to release the sacred meadow, there just so happened to be three children playing with puzzleboxes in a line right in front of the cage. Felt like a recipe for trouble. Besides...the room needed cleaning up after the mongoose massacre.

Finally, Ast, our bookkeeper and axedwarf, seems to be thoroughly cursed. We have no vermin in the fort except in his office, which now has mounds and mounds of vermin remains. Honestly no idea what's happening there - but I suggest you seal the office in and just give him a new one.

Dwarves need armor! Get to the magma for easier eternal forging. We have a lot of wood thanks to that cavern layer I pierced, food and drink are fine, as well. Everyone seems reasonably happy.

Save is HERE! (https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=15984)

There's a bug where only 1/10 children actually grow to adult size when they become adults. That means kids born in the fort make poor haulers and militiadwarves.

The dwarves of Dashringed have evolved to be small to fit their smaller surroundings

I almost finished my year, it was almost disastrous when we had a werebeast pop up as it entered the central staircase.

@AvolitionBrit, can you please turn in the save?  I don't want to be rude, I just didn't want this thread to become stale  ;D.

There is no next overseer and I've been struck by a strange mood. I'm taking the save.

EDIT: WHY ARE THERE DEAD BODIES IN THE STAIRWELL. WHY IS HALF THE FORT FLOODED. WHY IS THERE NO STILL?? WE ARE DRINKING WATER! THIS PLACE IS A SHITHOLE

I was gonna roleplay, but uh... I'm just gonna try to improve the fort a bit. No screenshots yet.

Granite:
 - Built a fishery and still.
 - Started making all our eggs and stuff into roasts. Started cleaning all the raw pond turtles we had laying around. Started brewing drinks.
 - Elves came. THEY BROUGHT A GIANT RHINOCEROS. I traded some marble pots for it. I have placed its cage in the dining hall where dwarves may admire and feed it.
 - Apparently the repellent mucus has no syndrome? I'm considering building something outside but I'm not sure.
 - Laid a couple of ghosts to rest.

THINGS I CAN DO:
 - Raid a nearby necromancer tower for a book of necromancy?
 - Try to stop the waterfall coming down the stairs? Maybe drain some of the lower fort?
 - Build a fortress on the surface?
 - Dig a better fort beneath the third cavern layer?

Share your opinions.

Be sure to dig a cistern to collect the waterfall's water, It rains goo here. I like the idea of a surface fort.

We have like 3 wells because we have like 3 stair waterfalls. I can fix the top one but the first cavern area is a lost cause.

Also by my guess we have about 30-40 layers of granite underneath the third cavern if we need to move down there.

Build a new for under the old one, and just pretend the old one doesn't exist.

My name is Flame, and I have seen what is coming.

This world is a harsh one. The lands are polluted and corrupt. Monsters fill every corner. Vile demons and necromancers lead their armies against all that is good.

Civilization will fall. There is too much stacked against it. Even here, they will come for us.

They will come, to take our riches.

They will come, to devour our flesh.

They will come, because we are alive.

We will not let them.

We must build this place strong enough to weather the storm.

First, we need to take stock of our resources.

We have very little wood. It must be used only for what is necessary. I curse the overseer who wasted in on barrels.

We have no metal. We have only what we can buy or what we can take from our invaders.

We have sand. Sand makes glass. Glass is a good alternative to wood, lighter than stone, fireproof, and beautiful.

We have clay. Clay makes earthenware. Earthenware is less useful than glass, but we do have access to it.

Glass and earthenware require fuel. We don't have enough wood to supply that fuel. We need the earth's blood. I've sent our miners to extend the stairway down until they reach warm rock.

We have stone. Near the surface, we have schist and slate. Inferior stones, fit for dirt-scratching humans. Lower down we have marble. A beautiful stone, but we need to save it for steel. Some overseer has built rooms down there. If our forges grow hungry, they may need to be moved. We also have phyllite, quartzite, gniess, and diorite, but not much of each. The gabbro layers are filled with watery caverns. Below all that we have granite. Though it may be far from the surface, granite is what we will build our fortress from. Its strength will serve us well.

Around this time, the elves departed and dumped half their goods in the doorway. I hope this doesn't sour our relationship with them. We have enough enemies without making more.

Also, some migrants... or refugees... arrived. Hopefully we can house and feed them all. We will certainly put them to work.

Here I am building the new magma glass furnaces. The forges and smelters will go to the north.

OHSHIT

All I can do is send the military and see how it plays out.

It's already in the fort.

It's dogpiled by our brave, stupid dwarves. Two are already infected. Our wereweasel may have some company.

At the end of it all, Linkxsc ends its life with a pick through the heart. The military never made it. Four dwarves were infected, but no casualties. Let this be a lesson to us. To never let our guard down.

Three of the infected were successfully quarantined. Perhaps someday they will serve the fort once more, but for now, they remain here. Unfortunatly, the fourth, a child, could not be ordered. In order to rid the fort of the danger he presented required him, his parents, and his younger brother to be banished from the fort.

Humans visited the fort. They brought news. I bought cages, barrels, bags, bins of leather, food, drink, and books. What wonderful trading partners!

The werecreatures are contained.

Oh boy, migrants. We definitely don't have enough beds for them. Let's fix that.

I should also mention that this whole time I've been quarrying granite and having all our useless mouths carve and haul granite bricks.

Some farmer made an artifact. Now she's the only woodcrafter in the fort, and legendary at that. Not bad, all in all, but I'm still training most of the fort to be masons so they'll make better artifacts, among other things.

I have made a thing of beauty. I have packed as many bedrooms into this one z-level as physically possible. We don't have enough wood for all the beds, but we have some, and I'll start making the doors and cabinets right away.

Good luck assholes, the door's locked.

...

Several months later, I've decided to lift the siege. The military has been training and naming their weapons this whole time.

Here they come...

And we've wiped out the siege. No casualties or wounds, though there were some close calls. I opened the front door, designated the armor and weapons to be brought inside and melted, and ordered some trees chopped.

Then the necromancers arrived. Four of them, and a vast army of zombies and fell creatures. The surface is still littered with corpses. The gates were shut in time, but sadly, Ubbul the carpenter and Shorast the manager, bookkeeper, and legendary bonecarver were left outside. They put up a good fight before they went down. There's no way we can defeat this army the way we are now. So much for my plans for a massive surface contruction.

Another artifact. A stonecrafter isn't the worst thing to be.

. . . was this segment of the tunnels on the second cavern meant to be flooding? it looks as though a staircase was dug so as to breach through the stone into the lake. WELP

. . .

A cathedral of glass, yessssss, but it wont do to put it on the surface with all these rotting creatures stumbling about. We must make a volume of space underground, cutting away the loose stalactites, flattening the passages and clearing out the muck. Now fire the forges! We need bags for the sand! Get lifting, dwarves!

If I remember properly, I was trying to drain some section of the cavern. But I don't think it was the second layer.

I looked at the images again, That was all me. I forgot that liquids could travel through diagonal tiles, So the main staircase flooded. I tried all kinds of workarounds. But it was a lost cause.

It took a long ass time and I was sort of unimpressed with the result, but it should provide a safe place to farm trees and pasture animals. it is airtight, you could fill it with water if you wanted. . . the western side has an exit bridge, with levers marked accurately.

The siege left in the last month of Winter. I took a good long look at the surface full of broken arrows and rotting limbs. . and left it for the next dwarf.
