That is a thing that people do in real life too.

The moss could only grow on the south side of the elf. But since elves are ambulatory, that would mean that the hair would have to grow super fast, and whenever the elf turned all the hair would fall out and start growing again on the other side.

Actually, this hair style has been the norm for thousands of years. This is a traditinal elf, whilst the elf that is commonly found in fairytales are the rebels. You know, long blond hair, peacuful grace, flowing dress or a green cap and tight fitting woodly cloths.
