Roll To Dodge / Office Workers' day off
« on: September 15, 2023, 08:07:47 am »
This will be a silly rtd and will die when there is lack of interest or I run out of ideas, or the world explodes, whichever.
Hi, I am Oz.

It is early morning, perhaps even still late night, and you DO NOT want to go to work today. So, let's have an adventure! Or stay in bed, I'm not your mother, probably. At least I don't remember giving birth to such a lazy good for nothing slacker. Clean your room and do your laundry before the neighbors can smell you with the windows closed. And come eat. I made breakfast. Momma loves you.

Post your character and bold your action. Or don't. Momma loves you either way.

Roll To Dodge / Dumped
« on: June 17, 2022, 10:23:49 pm »
You've been dumped. Like so many before you, and like so many will be after. But life goes on, and so shall you.

Probably.

If the drop pod doesn't incinerate in a too-steep descent into atmosphere, or fall too shallow and bounce off the Trash Planet's atmosphere, sending you careening through the star system for centuries or more, alone and cold.

And if the beasts of the Heaps don't devour you, nor the toxic wastes poison you too severely.

Well, at least you are not allergic to water or oxygen, as this planet apparently has both in abundance.

At least, that's what the in-flight instructional audio said. Repeatedly. Most of the rest of the instructions are a bit of a blur in your memory. Or maybe they were rather blurred coming out of the speaker.

The rest of your reminiscence is cut off as your pod hits hard atmosphere, the roar of air burning away the thin protective plating loud in your auditory sensors for what seemed longer than it probably was, before your pod finally slowed enough to drop slowly (by cosmic standards) through the denser low atmosphere. And then, a couple tense minutes as you wait for the race between the parachute and the ground to be decided.

Lucky you, parachute wins, this time. You land with a mere bone jarring thud, rather than the cell shattering splat that might have been. A warning light appears and the warning message is cut off mid sentence by the explosion that sends your pod's hatch hurtling outward. You hear a dull clang - the sound of metal on metal - and immediately after a much louder, sharper clang - the sound of something large and metal rocketing into your drop pod at explosive speeds. Auditory sensors ringing, nauseous, and feeling somewhat heavy, you stagger out of your limited crash chair and peek from your hatch to see several very identical pods nearby. it appears you've landed in an open, sparsely grassed area alongside others who have been dumped.

The Great Weave has collapsed, sending shockwaves and chaos throughout the world. Bereft of the once stable magical system that upheld society's interconnected network of systems - business, transportation, security, communications, healthcare, research - The young Empire of Astrea has experienced a severe crisis. Starvation, joblessness, homelessness, crime, and despair are rampant in the Capital city, Neacor, and all along the developed regions central to the Empire.

People are hunkering down, scavenging for what they can earn, make, or steal to survive. Many have left eh cities to find work or safety in nearby rural areas - farms and small towns have seen a massive influx of refugees, and their problems along with them. Others seek refuge in mystic societies, or have fled the Empire back to the Old World - those who could afford passage, or were willing to brave the Forges to earn their way Across the Aethyr. For both groups, the instability in the System brought great risk for the journey.

Still others have turned their eyes outward - to the edges of civilization. A patchwork system of Nodes, Transport Lines, Ferries, and Coaches links the core of the Empire with settlements and opportunities in distant, wild places:
The dry North, where Spice is harvested, earning those fortunate enough to survive the Worms untold fortune.
The Western Archipelago, where hunting ships wage war against he sea and bring great harvests to shore, should they ever return to shore at all,
the Southern Steppes, full of fast, powerful animals and a booming - some even say explosive - fur trade.
The most desperate, foolish, and unlucky travel East into Desolation. Only rumors remain of them. Only legends reach your ears of those who have returned from the East, broken, scarred, dying.

Hungry, desperate, tired, your eyes turn outward, to the horizons, and you ponder your fate.

Roll To Dodge / Skavenslaves: A Gruntslike in a Warhammer setting
« on: April 12, 2021, 02:19:32 am »
War. What is life, but an unending series of battles, an endless gnawing hunger driving one inexoriably forward. This battle, just like all the others. Surrounded by the fur, the teeth, and the fear musk of your fellow skavenslaves, the air filled with the shouts of the enemy and the endless chatter of your nest-brethren, your rivals for the scraps-food left behind by the stronger, better fed rats:

"Not MY fault!"

"Should we run? Flee?"

"Other clanrats are fleeing!"

You rush forward to the enemy lines, fight until the fear musk overwhelms, then swarm away until the  air clears, only to turn back against your enemy as the pheremonal signals fade and the hunger-drive urges you forward once more. Until at last, the battle ends as the enemy retreats beyond claws/teeths reach. and the real battle begins, the fight among yourselves for each morsel-scrap.

You are skavenslaves, and all you know is war.

Roll To Dodge / Mold Farmers in Space
« on: November 17, 2020, 08:05:33 pm »
How did it go this wrong? What happened in your life that you deserved this? What divine being or nasty politician did you get on the wrong side of to wind up here?

And what do you do now?

You've been taken. Kidnapped. Stolen. Hijacked. You're trapped on an awful, unstylish, decrepit old space ship, adrift in the cosmos, run by an insane, sarcastic A.I. (is there any other kind?)

You've been designated as "essential crew" by the A.I. And must now struggle to survive in this mechanical monstrosity, filled with the smells of broken space equipment, biological stench, and mold. Mold everywhere. probably ought to get that checked. Because this ship does NOT look like it was intended as an agricultural endeavor. Not that you really know.

Well, roll up your sleeves, time to get to work.

Roll To Dodge / Homunculi: barf and boars
« on: August 31, 2020, 05:22:26 pm »
This is a game where you play as a cat sized artificial creature in a world based on a dwarf fortress map. Your goal is to survive. you can alter your body by consuming the right materials and expending energy. This is a fairly casual game I don't intend to put a lot of effort into, but the world is intended to be quite dangerous for your kind, so be prepared for your homunuclus to die.

Roll To Dodge / Spellcraft Arena
« on: June 02, 2019, 01:47:16 am »
The Grand Colloseum of Exothage stands before you, sixteen stories of stone, steel, glass, and carnage. It's the ultimate testing ground for student Spellcrafters recently graduated from the schools of AlphaZed. Massive crowds stream toward the eight primary audience gates. Cordoned of between these massive archways are smaller entrances, for staff, V.I.P.s, and applicants. You wend through the crowds, working your way to the applicant line, Totem held protectively in hand, in pocket, against your chest, or otherwise carefully secured against danger. You, and several dozen other applicants await a turn at one of the several testing chambers just inside the entrance. The test will determine your eligibility to fight in this year's tournaments.

"Place your totem in the slot. You will receive your spell components. You will then proceed to cast spells to affect the targets."

Roll To Dodge / Wolfhound Incorporated
« on: May 27, 2019, 11:26:56 pm »
Old, rundown cars line the tired, pot-hole plagued street outside. Trash dotted the area. Some nestled into corners beside door stoops leading into three and four story brick tenements, some with bars across their windows, some with boards. Some drifted down the cracked sidewalks in the gusty breeze. some was ground into the gutters, clogging the storm drains. Dirty children played in the two lane street while teens and older folk sat sprawled out on their front steps, talking fast and saying nothing.

The door was cracked. The words painted at eye level were faded - once white, now dingy yellow: Wolfhound Incorporated. The latch had been sheered out of the doorframe and hung loosely against the green painted door, clanging against the doorknob as the door swung open or closed. Inside, the floor was a threadbare carpet, blackened at the door by the wear of countless feet crossing the threshhold. THe carpet used to be tan, but most of it was grey or brown with the stains of time. A musty smell of decaying wood, ancient dust, and moldy air conditioning lingered in the strangely claustrophobic room. Several mismatched chairs lined one wood panelled wall, and a single desk faced the door.

Sitting on the desk was a black cat. He was licking his balls. A sign on a small metal stand in front of the desk gave the sparse instructions: Applicants: Fill out form on clipboard and wait to be called. Expectantly, you reached for one of the half dozen clipboards with blank forms attached, and rooted around in the small glass jar for a pen that worked, then sat carefully on one of the unstable chairs next to the wall. The cat ignored you completely.

Feel free to stop by to post comments, and feel free to discuss all things novel related here in this thread.

Roll To Dodge / Omega Revenant: Catch A Falling Star
« on: June 21, 2018, 04:22:01 am »
Prologue

Omega Base shakes violently, to it's very core. Brilliant light, of all colors and of colors unseen, radiates from within, traces arcs, lines, patterns across the canyon floor, the cliffs, the air and sky. Peals of thunder precede a lightning storm with strikes so close together they could be a single, continuous bolt racing from Earth to sky, sky to earth, and everywhere in between. The ground groans and buckles. The very space in which Omega base exists warps - stretching, curving, peeling away as if the universe were bending backward onto itself. The Rains fall in torrents, obscuring what had been illuminated by the lightning.

Outside the Base, in the desert surrounding Omega proper, The world goes darker than black, quieter than silence. And then the dark begins to peel back, revealing massive steel walls, a hundred feet tall. Beyond, a city emerges form the Night, wrapping about the bent world like a blanket of civilization around a dead rock. as the city emerges past the halfway point, the buildings, streets, and other things begin to get more crowded. thre quarters of the way around, the buildings smash into, merge with, or destroy one another in violent explosions as they vie for more and more limited space. At the point exactly opposite Omega Base proper, the City Wall forms a solid Column - a steel spire three hundred feet wide and eight hundred tall. A dozen elongated gates ring the base of the Spire, leading into a central room a couple dozen feet across, with a single Gateway in it's center.

Throughout the newly formed world, the lightning strikes leave behind radiant beings - Branded Beings once mourned. The radiance fades from each in it's own pace, in it's own way. Most stagger and fall to the ground, some unconscious, some merely breathless, others wounds, a few simply weeping for gratitude at a second chance -a chance that an Omega never expects to receive.

Other beings rise up from inside Omega - chains forged in darkness shattering under the light. They spread out to wreak havoc wherever they go. Some mindless, some malicious, all destructive, they leave trails of bloodshed and brokenness in their wake. A smaller group races out after them, seeking to halt their rampage, to bring them under control once more. the Omega Officers find their hands full, chasing some of the most unstable of Omegas in an effort to reign them in, to find some sense of order again in a World gone Mad.

Roll To Dodge / Life in Space
« on: January 13, 2018, 03:44:24 am »
This is a reboot of my first rtd, Roll to Alien.

You are an Alien. of course, from your perspective, the other races are the aliens.
Why are you here, on this space station so far from your homeworld?
Why have you come to dwell among the many strange species of beings found here?
What did they put in that drink, anyway?

You don't have to have a complete sheet to join. We can work out some info as we go. But a lot of what's in here will make a difference to gameplay, so do try to flesh out the race as you go.

clarifications of terms. please ask to have any terms included that you find useful

Roll To Dodge / Omega Legion: Killing you with Kindness
« on: December 05, 2017, 07:59:16 am »
Main thread

Amid the hustle and bustle of final preparations, the Omega Base seems more lively than it has in a long time. It's a pity that this is because it is dying. You lot gather together in front ofthe only officer you've seen since the last mission you were on, each occupied by your own preparations, your own thoughts and expectations. The officer looks around at you wuth an air of calm resolve. He pauses for a moment, another look crossing his face before his expression goes neutral again.

Alright you lot, listen up. We've discussed this already, but there's no harm in repeating it: You are going to Lathal to take the Heart of Lathal and return it here to Omega Base.

Lathal is a large planetoid in the plane of Air. It's nature is primarily that of a living machine.

Inside Lathal are a host of dangers, from parts of the living machinery, to creatures that live there, to the fact that Lathal is dying. Expect rough terrain, hostile beings, and of course, expect to get lost. Your goal is to reach the center of Lathal, to gain access to the heart, and to prepare it for transport back here.

We have fetishes for each of you that will point toward the Heart. Keep these with you at all times.
We have gear for you to outfit yourself in, so that you might better survive the journey. Weapons, armor, medicines, potions, rings, you name it.
We have transportation to Lathal, within Lathal, and from Lathal
We have supplies, so you don't starve or die of thirst in that place. We have light sources for you to carry.
We have items of worth that you can trade to the inhabitants if need be. Do try not to get robbed of them.

Go, stick together, work together, and do your best to come home alive, or what passes for alive in each of your cases.

Now, let me inspect your gear, and get you trained up on using these transports, these sigils, and these other bits."
