Title: Piecewise's Random Generators: Martial Art Styles.
Post by: piecewise on November 17, 2014, 12:56:07 pm
Automorphica: Ever heard of the giant mutation roll table collection thing called the Metamorphica? This is an automated version of that. You might still need dice occasionally, but this greatly reduces the amount of work you'd need to do by connecting you to all the info and rolling 99% of the stuff for you.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Cult Generator: A generator that creates cults. May or may not be hilarious.

Mechanical Muse: A generator intended to break writers block by giving you several evocative bits of text without context. Works for me, it might work for you.

Ooooh baby.
I don't care that much for Auto-Morphica or Cult Generator (they both seem cool though), but I can see myself using Mechanical Muse a lot in my Gun Francisco worldbuilding woes. Thanks a lot, mister!

Hope it proves useful. I may expand it in the future with more bits of text, since more is always better.  This is actually the pure text version. I have one with images as well:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But it is significantly larger because, well, images.

Is there anywhere we can get the one with images? The Mechanical Muse looks like it could be very handy indeed, even more so with visual content.

Here is the version with images. It's only got 100 now, but if there's interest I'll expand the text and the images for a second release.

Quick warning, there are some images that aren't safe for work. No porn or anything, but a few have artistic nudity. Figured I should say.

I'm sad that you can't post the random loot generator because that sounds the most interesting. But it's understandable you're using that for ER. The other ones are cool too.

I could always create a loot generator that ISN'T for ER. Though it might be very random if not focused by setting or context.

Using this as a base, could you also create a Random Potion Generator for RPGs and such? Each potion could have beneficial and/or negative effects in addition to how it looks/tastes/smells.

That's actually planned. I still have to add the...lets see...Strength of the liquid (ie how much is needed to see effects), major effects, minor effects, description of the container and a name generator.

After that I've got a Cyberpunk Subcultures generator that someone asked me to make.

E: The random drink generator has given me ideas for my own RL. I might borrow the drink generator, but I'm gonna make me a fruits and vegetables generator.

I'm working on a character generator for something as well. It's not done yet, but here's something small you might be able to use:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/m30a2vq1a1xaeep/Name%20generator.html?dl=0

It generates names. Thats it. It users the 500 most common first names and 1000 most common last names. According to US census data, at least.  It also prints Male or Female, since some of those names can go either way. It's simple, but might be useful.

Here we go. I went with a more vague method of doing the effects, something more like perplexicon or the mechanical muse. For instance, in this image, we have a potion that as below average potency, positive effects, alters reality, is permanent in duration and has the interactions of "Layered" and "Ensoul"

I read that as a potion that imbues a mass of weakly sentient souls into whatever it is poured on. In case you ever wanted a sword haunted by a layered hive of infant souls.

And who hasn't, honestly.

Sigged.

Am I meant to be interpreting Calamitous and Viral in the same way as their perplexicon effects?

I ended up with a Potion of Moonlight.

Nice work. Always liked random generators.

Three things you could add to the drug generator are onset, peak, and duration of effect. You have the second already for your potion generator, but the other two could fit also. Would make testing found potions or even building tactics around their use more interesting.

The street names make me laugh and think of this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ai6ZftaME0U).

Now if I can only figure out how to layer images in twine...
This thread (http://twinery.org/forum/index.php?topic=1918.0) may help. From what I understand, you could make each image a separate CSS class and have their position as absolute so that they appear in the same location even if there's something already below them. Though that seems rather complicated and I don't know much CSS.

EDIT: This should do the trick! (http://strugglingwithtwine.blogspot.com.au/)

Hey, when you're caught up, or if it takes your interest, could you add a robotic conversion system to the automorphica? Something where the base creature has one or more mechanical "themes" applied to it, where each theme would be a separate run through the generator, giving structural materials, power source, design principles, etc. So you could make a creature, generate a robotic template for it, and then add a mutation set and roll up a separate template for the mutations to do a robot that was damaged and repaired with nonstandard components. Or, you could just roll it after the mutation to get an easy cyborg generator.

Well, food for thought, at least. Quite an impressive spread already.

Those aren't finished, they're just unfinished twine projects sitting in the file.

I could do something...sort of like that maybe. But honestly, I'll probably not mess with automorphica. First because it was designed as an automated version of a preexisting thing.

Second, because it is a goddamn nightmare.

That is the difference. The first one chooses pieces to use every time. The second one doesn't always use all the pieces.

Okay then. Definitely not that. Consider my request revised to a standalone module not connected to that thing. Given all the other hypothetical ways, it seems programming an elder god into existence would work too. Better not tempt it.

On a hopefully unrelated note, both sets of glyphs look great. The second one quite frequently gives he feeling of a world being corrupted, while the first is just a huge mass of corruption with maybe one spot left. I guess it depends on what you're going for, but maybe there could be an influence rating, with more powerful gods having larger/more convoluted symbols?

I dunno. More odd locations (like the ones where it's inside a musical composition, people's minds, books and whatnot) would be nice though.

Can I suggest a generator which generates mysterious alien objects/artefacts/ships/structures ?

Pretty good.

If you intend to do a lot of generators, I suggest getting auto hotkey and setting it up with a few actions. For me at least, I use a lot of the <<print either("This","That","Or the other thing")>> commands with very long lists of choices, so having it set up so I can just press a few buttons and quickly add a bunch of  "," makes things easier.

You can get over that via a rather more complex method of using <<if>> statements and variables to choose categories of things. So that you can have certain random choices cause the program to only choose among certain other random choices. It's a good way to prevent your "Sword of shining goodness" from also containing the ability to summon demons via child sacrifice.

How do you make your generator stay thematically correct.
I'm don't know about Twine, but could you assign some sort of tag to each part of the substrings, where the tag represents the theme? If so, you could make the generator pick a theme, and then only pick strings out of that theme.

Pre-edit: looks like Twine supports Javascript, so it should be possible.

The only way I know how to do that is with many if else statements
The way I've figured out how to do it is like this:

Say you have this sword generator and you have effects that could be considered good, evil or neutral. And you have names that could also be considered good, evil or neutral.

Well, you assign a variable to each type of name. Like <<set $morality to Evil>> or <<set $morality to Good>>. And then, you have an if then statement which leads to collections of effects for each type. Here, I'll do up a quick example.

Here is the finished version
https://www.dropbox.com/s/n4yupwxqme16lpp/Weapon%20gen%20example.html?dl=0

And here is the actual file for you to look through. I've added notes to explain how it works.

  • The Celebrated Blow Method - Uh. I hope this revolves around improvising blowdarts and not weaponized fellatio.
  • Agile Coffin School - Especially popular with vampires. Horrible, horrible vampires that bounce around their coffins in broad daylight, crushing people to death.
  • The Putrid Cocoon Path - I guess if you roll around in excrement, people will be hesitant to punch you.
  • The Spider Method - Also known as living in Australia.
  • The Ecstatic Art of the One hundred and twenty Club - Weaponized nightclubbing, apparently.
  • The Lucky Path of the Electric Stampede - Segway Hit and Run.

If you're still accepting generator requests, I'd like to request a building generator.
What do you mean by "Building"? There are a hell of a lot of different structures that mankind has made over the years, and everything from an outhouse to the great pyramid of giza is considered a building. I need specifics. Time period too.

How about a mythological monster generator?  Look up Wikipedia's list of legendary creatures by type for ideas, then mix up elements accordingly.

"A creature with the head and upper body of a horse with the back and rear legs of a lion.  It can turn people to stone with its breath.  It is aggressive, but can be placated by giving it gold."
"A green eagle.  It can cause seizures in those who meet its gaze.  It takes on the form of a woman and seduces human men in order to reproduce."
"A winged bear that lives in rivers.  It stalks humans and drinks their blood.  It can be driven off by the smell of potatoes."

...
Part aftermath generator, PW, pls?
Party aftermath? Give me some examples

Where's the random skeleton generator?
I'm feeling compelled.

Requesting a gibberish word generator, for... perplexicon reasons.
Yes, but PW didn't share it. :P
I used...where is it...Ah here
http://www.nexi.com/fun/rw/form.html

It lets you input parts of words and generates words for you from those parts.  Go nuts.

The Metamorphica has something like that, but without the stuff about their activities. Could do that.

Party aftermath? Give me some examples
You awaken in: a different hotel entirely. You are wearing: a vivisected corpse, and, an engagement ring. Around you are: half a keg of beer containing an icelandic death metal bear, a bound and struggling man with a bag over his head, a pile of receipts that smell of alcohol, a brick wall made out of bricks of cocaine, and, the Washington Monument gift-wrapped in erotic novels written in a language you can't read.

a) I am trying to generate a series of numbers within parameters. I need to be able to copy the text of this list of numbers. I would suggest this because I think all GMs could focus more creativity with a tool for the mundane like this.

b) What program is ideal to open your generators, the muse with images in reply #5, for instance?

With regards to A, I would recommend Anydice (http://anydice.com). It should be able to handle most really weird die requirements, and can do large batches too.

Random.org should be suffecent for most any random number needs.

It isn't as configurable, though. You can do all the weird experimental stuff people like to do with Anydice. Typing stat modifiers directly into the roll can be nice for more complicated systems, at least.

Random bug report: In your "Character Generator" generator it is possible children aged 1-10 to be married and have a children. I mean it's technically possible for 6 year old to become a mother, but perhaps there's space for some additional age checks?

I dunno it seems to check out for Magical Girl characters.

Isn't that right Sailormoon.
