Title: Usnuspstrasp - Return of the Dwarves. (Succession Game, COMPLETE)
Post by: comicraider on May 01, 2018, 03:37:27 pm
World run by Goblins? Elves and Humans extinct? Five dwarves left that are all immortal? This world needs dorfing up.

I was doing some worldgen as i do when i get bored and seem to have come up with an absolute doozy. Nothing special, just ramped up the savagery and set the Civ number to Very low, and the history to Very Long.

End result? Goblins rule the world from the three sites they have left. 5 Dorfs left in the world and they're all female necromancers who've been alive for centuries and all but one seem to have been raised by goblins (the other being born before recorded history, first dorf is last dorf), Humans and Elves are completely extinct. Also megabeasts and shit on a rampage.

We must rebuild. Grab some jumper cables, attach them to some ballsacks and put our drunken bearded friends back at the top of the food chain, bring The Allied Helm back from the dead.

How about a series of succession games to make the world great again? Start off a new fort in a safer part of the world (I THINK I found a very small good biome), use the settlers and hardcoded migrants to try and restart the gene pool, and spread out from there, reminding the Goblins of what hilarious buggery we're capable of?

Still deciding on a name for the initial fortress, suggestions are welcomed as well as players. Only real rules I have are no senseless Dwarf casualties; we're only gonna have the settlers and whatever we get in the hardcoded migrant waves, so we have to make that last until children start coming of age.

So who's in for tearing The Ageless Planet a new one?

Primary Objectives;

1) Bring Dwarven civilization back from extinction.
2) Make sure it doesn't die.
3) Try and recover artifacts from Dwarven ruins.

Secondary Objectives;

1) Take the goblins down a notch.
2) Take out some megabeasts.
3) Bring about the Age of Dwarves, which I guess is both 1 and 2 but I digress.
4) Get hold of a Necromancy Book to give the populace immortality [OPTIONAL]

Adventurer turns will start once the fortress is either finished or stable enough to be retired without fear of massacre.
From what I can tell you can only play as Human Outsiders so armor's gonna be tricky, and I'd reccomend poking around the Human ruins for supplies.
Turns will last a year as always or until your Adventurer dies, whichever comes first :P. Objectives are still pretty much the same (kill goblins and megabeasts, recover artifacts, ???, PROFIT), but I'll be setting up a points system and making it a little competition;

Goblin Kill - 1 point. (simply because there are thousands of the damned things)

Bogeyman/General Ambush Kills - 5 points

Megabeast Kill - 50 points

Recovered Dwarven Artifacts - 30 points

Recovered Non-Dwarven Artifacts - 20 points (there are more of them, even if Elves and Humans have been dead for longer)

Accomplishing all of this and surviving, retiring back at Sunshield or another Dwarven settlement if we get that far - 50 points

Whoever gets the highest confirmed point count out of the various Adventurers in their lifetime will win naming rights to a future fortress, in this world or any I go on to make :P Also I shall write a kickass story of your adventure and post it to the Hall of Legends or something, I dunno yet xD

I'm up for this!

Repopulating the world seems like a noble goal. In my experience, however, only a few dwarfs get to marry, so whole generation is probably going to be a few families. Age of dwarfs? Yay! Let's just hope it won't be an age of inbred dwarfs. :)

Here's hoping the hardcoded migrants come in handy :P Plus I know how to set up "pre-honeymoon suites" so at the very least since we'll likely only really see the first new generation we just have to make sure they churn out at many of the little blighters as they can :3 drown the goblins in babies

I'd like to claim a dwarf. Could you post the starting 7's likes/dislikes?

I'll post them as soon as I have them, we're still in the planning stages and trying to find players, the first fort doesn't even have a name yet :P but yeah, I'll dorf you once I get there :3

Sure. :) If I can't get any players/enough to make a proper succession game I may just post the narrative here, give me a chance to write again.

Welcome aboard, fellow Urist. I'll start putting together a player list :) I'm also gonna have slots for Adventurers, I figured having extra hands to go kill Goblins and recover Artifacts from the old Dwarven territories and what have you would be helpful :3 I also settled on an embark, a little 4x4 square by the ONLY good biome in the world, free of Aquifers, good amount of trees, by the mouth of a river and away from the Goblin holds. Now we just need a name and it'll be good to go! :)

Alrighty, we have a name.

Sunshield.

With the embark sorted out I'm just about ready to get started! I'll pull up the initial settlers' preferences and what have you shortly after embark, this is gonna take some work.

Nice name. I have a group name to go with that: Udib Bisól (The Syrups of Peace)

Actually a civilization name I remember. ;) Certain dwarven civilization was named like that in one of my worlds.

Nice :P I think it's called The Eternal Sanctuary at the minute but the thought of using that name as an ironic military name makes me giggle :P I'm planning the embark now, any suggestions what to give the settlers in terms of skills/equipment/livestock etc.?

The selected land is bountiful, isn't it?

Some food & booze, an anvil, a pickaxe, an axe, (edit) some seeds (/edit) and a kitten. Everything else can be made on site. I usually spend the rest of points on stones of interest. Bituminous coal and assorted ores. I often have to roll a few worlds to get a civilization which has access to all the stones I want.

As for dwarfing, I'd like a miner who also does engraving. Someone who comes at a raw rock, and leaves a neat, smoothed and masterfully engraved room behind. Male if possible.

I would like to claim Id Dumatlar. I would suggest making him a proficient armor smith, novice dodger, novice discipline, and 3 ranks in swordsman.

I would like to be a farmer as well. No need for skill points, I'll learn.

Please dorf me as Erib. If you need a miner, I'd like to be that. They always encounter the interesting underground stuff first, and when you no longer need diggers, miners always make useful military recruits.

Journal of Sodel "Comicraider" Kalanfikod.

15th Granite, 1050

We've arrived...but I have no idea where we came from.

Two weeks ago I woke up in the wilderness with six complete strangers, none of us seem to have any recollection of what happened to us, as if we just sort of came into existence. Hangovers aren't fun.
The nearby hillocks were all devoid of life, seemingly having been abandoned for centuries. Even the capital, the fortress of Gladgold, was derelict, save for the sounds of roaring from some unknown creature, but none of us wanted to find out what it was.

Upon leaving the fortress me and my companions came across a blue jay woman, seemingly a travelling bard. Before we could ask her what happened to the Dwarven territories the creature stared at us, wide-eyed and confused, asking us where we came from. According to her, our people were wiped out hundreds of years ago by the Goblin empires that ruled Usnuspstrasp with a Goblinite fist.

Could this be true? Are we all that's left? What happened?

Unwilling to accept the truth that we could be the last seven dwarves in existence, we pressed on and travelled east, following our new friend's advice and going into hiding before our knife-eared overlords caught wind of our very prescence on this earth. Eventually coming across a seemingly peaceful place to settle we began to build, hoping this place would become a safe haven for us and any other survivors that may or may not be out there.

Sunshield. The last Dwarven refuge.

21st Granite, 1050

We've finished basic housing for ourselves, and built a large gate so we can seal ourselves inside in the event that we're discovered. Once the farms are built and we have water running underground we should be relatively self-sustaining. Armok be damned, I need a drink. Here's hoping our farmer, Id "Justin" Dumatlar, gets the still finished soon.

7th Malachite, 1050

Migrants! We're not all that's left after all!

Early this morning we had a group of eight refugees, one being a child, arrive at our doors. Like us, they seemingly woke up with no memories. According to the child's father, Zasit Southplank, even his daughter's birth is shrouded in mystery, having no recollection of a wife. He just woke up and recognised young Ezum Daggerequals as his daughter.

We welcomed our stranded brethren with open arms and provided them with rooms, it's a few more mouths to feed but who can put a price on their species' very survival?

13th Galena, 1050

One of our two dogs, Besmar Idilrom, hasn't been seen for a few days. We only had a breeding pair of dogs so I'm a little worried.

15th Galena, 1050

Young Ezum Daggerequals ran into my office in a panic today, claiming she found Besmar dead near our wagon covered in stab wounds. I sent a group to investigate and now we're all nervous; was this a native animal-person, or were the Goblins onto us? We sealed the gate that night and doubled rations for everyone just in case, this whole thing has left us all on edge.

29th Galena, 1050

We're in a fairly good place right now in terms of surviving. Justin has been working overtime to make sure we had enough alcohol and food to last a while, so now I can end the rationing, that should put a smile on everyone's faces. We also channeled the stream underground and into a reservoir, meaning we have a constant water source in the event that we have to seal the gate for a long period of time. It's strange being self-sustaining all of a sudden.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

12th Limestone, 1050

Another group of Dwarves arrived at our outpost today, this time a group of travelling merchants. Like us, they could tell us nothing about how we all survived extinction, but they managed to keep a low enough profile to gather supplies from the Dwarven ruins and come here undetected hoping to trade. We gave them a handful of Avuz Oddomurmin's  freshly-cut gems and some mussel shell crafts in exchange for some fabrics and they went on their way. Shame, if I had any idea they were coming I'd have gotten more for them to take.

I gave them a handful of extra gems and a mug of sweet potato wine each, hoping they'd come back soon. I hope they survive out there.

16th Sandstone. 1050

More amnesia-ridden refugees, this time only three newcomers. We had beds ready just in case more stragglers arrived, but I now have a feeling in the pit of my stomach that this is everyone that's left.
Luckily we got a few furnace operators among these recent arrivals, so they've been working around the sundial with our blacksmith, Cerol Bomrekazin, to smelt all the gold we've been digging out. I doubt money will do much at this point, but who doesn't want to die rich? Next up is all the iron, we'll have to arm ourselves...just in case.

1st Granite, 1051

The last few months were uneventful, beyond finishing digging out a temple nothing of note really happened. I gathered everyone in our place of worship for a few minute's silence, both in celebration of one year since we all awoke and in remembrance of our fallen brethren and any family we may have had, all seemingly long-since dead. We're all there is, a small enclave of 18 dwarves being the last remnant of our entire race.

I stepped down as Expedition Leader shortly afterwards, having finished my year and passing the reins onto Kol Nazomled, one of our farmers.
Unexpectedly, I was handed a pond turtle shell crown and declared the new queen of The Allied Helm, the first in almost nine hundred years, and possibly the last if we don't make this work. While I'd like to joke and demand a lavish throne room covered in Microcline and Brown Zircon, we have more pressing matters; if we're all that's left, we'll have to increase our numbers the old fashioned way. I'm ordering construction of "pre-honeymoon suites" as I write this.

19th Granite, 1051

We've finished three of these suites, all covered in fine engravings and decorated with the finest furniture and masonry that "Lunardog15" Kolbisek, Bembul Zegdatan and "Kametec_Houston" Tholfikod could produce. Hopefully we'll see some weddings soon.

While I've stayed a few days later than I planned, now's time to pass the oversight of the fortress onto another. May you improve on my work and guide our people into prosperity.

Might I suggest digging for some flux stone so we can get steel production underway, in case we do have to fight? Also, I wouldn't mind that throneroom after all, haha...

Current layout of the fort, I've built enough coffins for everyone but forgot/couldn't be arsed to take a screenshot;

I have received the save. When I'll have time later today, I'll start by reading the update above and then I'll start my own turn. I've also noticed that 44.10 is out. I guess I'll test if the save is compatible. Provided there are no issues, I'd suggest upgrading.

It is? I'll go download it now :P I think it'll just be memory improvements, seeing as our dwarves are in a tricky situation I imagine negative thoughts will end up causing issues especially with a few of the citizens having grudges already, but I don't think it'll be anything tantrum-worthy.

Here is the first update. I've observed various threads here for inspiration, so here goes nothing:

17th Granite, 1051
So, okay. It is 17th Granite today and queen comicraider has appointed me as an overseer for a year. Can't say I'm happy about it, but what can I do? Get drunk and get it over with. There is a lot of work. I've never been an overseer before, so I'll have to learn the ropes on the fly. As far as I know we could be the last dwarfs alive and we cannot afford incompetence. Now what should I do... I know! I'll start with familiarizing myself with current state of things as closely as possible. Now let's see. What is everyone doing I wonder? I'll look around and see what I find out.

18th Granite, 1051
I did some digging around, questioning and a couple of inspections. Results?
Spoiler: Activities (click to show/hide)
We're busy with praying, meditating and whatnot! Well, except me, of course, I'm a proper dwarf, I get things done. Look at me. I am a worshipper of Creature of Beards (as every proper dwarf should be), but do I waste my life away at a temple? Nope!
Spoiler: My relationships (click to show/hide)
I do hope that this bunch of temple goers will get out of the temple once I assign some work to be done. Actually, is there really nothing to do right now? Crafts to be prepared, booze to be brewed, food to be cooked? What is in our stockpiles again? Let's see. I'll ask our queen about it.

19th Granite, 1051
Spoiler: Status (click to show/hide)
She doesn't know? What does she mean, doesn't know? Estimates are okay enough? How are estimates okay?! Let's see how are estimates okay enough when we'll get to designing magma heating for royal suite. Anyway, I've decided what I'll do now. We need a bookkeeper. And a manager. And possibly a chief medical dwarf. My first deed will be appointing those.

Do we have any volunteers for vacancies in administration? I'm looking for a bookkeeper, manager and chief medical dwarf. If you want your dwarf to take up the job or just be dwarfed as one, let me know. Otherwise, I'll just decide myself.

Our current population is: (Since we have only a handful of dwarfs and new ones will be born instead of immigrating en masse, I'll go ahead and list their details.)

I'm not going to hide the new report into edit of my previous post, so sorry for double post.

20th Granite
I've spent today by pondering who will be our new secretary. I've decided to let Avan Babinushat do it. She doesn't find most jokes humorous, is very quick to anger, is prone to strong feelings of jealousy and is stubborn. Can you think of a better clerk?

She is going to need an office. Which brings me to another thing and that is layout of our fort. It is nice, but I can think of some improvements.

Take a look at this:
Spoiler: Meeting area (click to show/hide)
Once we'll set up a cozy tavern, all traffic to the metalworks is going to go right through it. I want to be able to enjoy my booze in peace and not be disturbed by noisy haulers dragging ores and whatnot. So I'll have new ways down channeled in the center hall, so that tavern will not be a transit area. Also, it will open a new areas to be dug.

Check our metalworks out:
Spoiler: Metalworks (click to show/hide)
They're spacious, aren't they? I like them! I want woodworks and stoneworks and other whateverworks to look like that as well. So I'll have them dug out. Once they're moved, we'll have free space around farms to make a cozy, spacious foodworks as well.

Sounds good! I usually have my woodwork/stonework etc areas fairly cramped like that for efficiency haha, just so I can get it all together and move on to quarters before anything really happens. Old habits die hard :P had I more time I'd have done exactly that and expanded them.

Okay, I haven't foreseen this.

use the settlers and hardcoded migrants to try and restart the gene pool, and spread out from there,

Dwarfs should be extinct, premise of this succession game is to start with as few dwarfs as possible and slowly repopulate the world. Yet a massive migrant wave of 18 just arrived, effectively doubling our dwarfs. I'm going to savescum a bit and set pop cap so they won't come anymore and we'll have to rely on our dwarvettes to do the repopulating. I mean there is no way I'm letting this last dwarfs in the world challenge turn easy mode by doubling our dwarf power in a single moment. 18 dwarfs is a nice number, not too little, yet I have to keep lack of dwarfs in mind. 36 is more like my everyday fortresses, which I cap at 50 dwarfs for fps reasons.

I digged around and found this noteworthy post:
... It can also be noted that the "hard coded" in the hard coded waves are just their appearance (unless blocked by pop cap or sieges). ...

Jesus, really?!

I checked Legends, before I embarked the five necromancers were literally all that's left.

Did they change the number of hardcoded migrant waves or something? O.o

Your call on wether or not to keep them, I think I left enough food to manage :P
Title: Re: Usnuspstrasp - Return of the Dwarves.
Post by: comicraider on May 08, 2018, 05:41:29 pm
From DFwiki:

"The third migrant wave and on are influenced by the created wealth of the fortress, with more wealth attracting more immigrants (more research is needed to determine specifics). Specifically, they're influenced by the fortress wealth as reported by the last outgoing dwarven caravan. Wealth created after the caravan leaves has no influence until the next year's caravan leaves. If the caravan fails to make it out then the fortress' wealth is not reported. The dwarven liaison does not report on fortress wealth, in those circumstances where the liaison makes it out but the caravan doesn't."

If it's created wealth, the size of the migrant wave may have been my bad. I went trigger-happy creating shell crafts and stone works (hence the shitload of decorated statues) along with cut gems and shell decorations etc. which may have attracted so many people.

The fact that we got a third wave at all perplexes me, imma do some research.

I savescummed, I had a save not long before they came. I'll just have to redesignate some areas and deal with damp stone cancellations below the water pipe again. Feeding those dwarfs would be easy, too easy in my opinion.

I changed d_init.txt:
[POPULATION_CAP:0] (in hope to prevent immigrants)
[STRICT_POPULATION_CAP:220] (default value, means we're allowed to have 220 dwarfs in fortress at a given time. I'm open to suggestions on what this cap should be. Too many dwarfs slow the game to a crawl.)
[BABY_CHILD_CAP:100:1000] (default value, means we'll have 100 underage dwarfs tops. Once they become peasants, further pregnancies will be allowed, up to the strict population cap.)

Cool. I'm not too fussed about more migrants turning up as it's more of a gene pool and more workers without a 12 year wait, but we do like a challenge :P Still no idea why we got a third wave.

Apologies about the water pipes, I didn't have the time to really get any pumps going (plus I'd have used a dwarven reactor, saves me killing the framerate) so channeling seemed appropriate :P

Oh speaking of pregnancies, any luck with the marriage rooms yet? I assigned a few couples (including the queen, want to get a dynasty going haha) before I handed the save over but forgot to turn off their labours so they stay in their rooms.

Marriage rooms are those rooms filled with statues, where dorfs cannot reach the table nor cabinet?

Well, I'm trying to keep idlers at 0 so far (there is work to be done), so I didn't have dorfs hanging around yet. ;)

Yeah, that's them. All the furniture and statues are masterworks, and the floors are caked in engravings. Ststues make sure only the beds are accessible so the guests have to be around each other and bond. With labors turned off it usually only takes a couple months, I did it in a previous world where the dwarves were simply dying out instead of dead :3

Editing the d_init.txt prevented immigration. This. Civilization. Is. Dead.

14th Felsite
First batch of digging is complete. I've ordered bookkeepers office to be furnished. Let's see what we have on hand, once she gets to work.

16th Felsite
Aban, our bookkeeper and manager, finally put things in order. Her findings are alarming, we are completely out of booze. I'll have her set up a standing work order for our still to make sure this never happens again. Once this is dealt with, I'll make sure we have a steady production of stone blocks. Those damned bunnies are driving me crazy. Little bastards keep running out of their pen and sapping our dwarf power constantly as dorfs catch them and lead them to the pasture all the time. I'm going order a wall build around them, solving this issue.

I honestly can't remember if I built any above-ground farms to get us some more diverse booze haha. I remember trying to find Sun Berries and giving up but that's about it. The farms put out enough that we can make enough Dwarven Wine to last a while anyway :P

Could I have Obok Nokimuvel. Make him a Mason/Miner, turn on the architect ability, and give him the custom title of "The Maker".
I won't take a turn just yet, but put me on the list reserving a place for when I have time, which should be in around a month or two.

We need to avoid casualties anyway so chances are we'll be caging invaders and later feeding them to whatever we find in the caves. Bout time we started wearing down the goblins' population :3 18 dwarves to 4000+ goblins, this is gonna be the war to end all wars.

Summer has arrived on the calendar. I realized that I can now be considered a legendary carpenter, in all modesty. Yay. The bunny issue is being solved. Pasture is turned into pen, with a wall and tightly shut doors, so the little devils stay inside. Now to figure how to get ones which are outside back in. If they keep eating at sanity, I'll have them butchered. On the other hand, I'm not a fan of kitten roast, so I'm considering gelding all our cats. We'll have time to figure out how to deal with vermin before they die of old age. And by that time, we may have all our food in adamantine pots so even two legged rhino lizards are going to grind their teeth to dust, hehe. I'm however open to suggestions, I'll geld them during winter. As for the bunnies, they can keep breeding like crazy. They have a murky pool in their pen, so any excess ones can drown for all I care.

Spoiler: Bunny & whatever pen (click to show/hide)

Regarding next projects: Newly dug areas need smoothing, I'd like to provide extra furniture for our apartments and hospital needs to be created. Trees are insidious and I want to have hospital going on before I take a falling log to the knee.

I wonder why those 18 dwarves showed up, and where they came from. 900 years after the civ died there shouldn’t be survivors in the wild to draw on, so where on earth could they have appeared from - migrant waves simply should not ever be able to ever show up in this kind of situation...

There is a related topic: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=170602.0 (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=170602.0).

According to info posted there, if a civ is truly dead, it is culled from embarkable civ list, so we shouldn't be able to embark as a truly dead civ. And pseudo dead or struggling civs seem buggy. I have dealt with those migrants by savescumming and disabling immigration by setting a pop cap. It worked, we're still on 18 dwarfs.

On unrelated note, it is autumn already, but I don't have time to compile a report now, so I'll either do it tomorrow evening or on Saturday.

The game will warn you, when I embarked I got a message saying "Your chosen civilization is dead or dying. Dwarves may take on important roles." or something to that extent.

I'll post the pre-embark XML files onto my Dropbox for people to take a look.

The first 3 migrations are hardcoded into the game, and don't draw on preexisting dwarfs, but come out of thin air.

Summer has been rather uneventful. We're hard pressed for dwarf power, so progress on standing projects has been slow. Considering we have about 1k prepared foods stockpiled, I think I'll leave the kitchen and brewery redesign for someone else. I'll be glad I'll manage to have current projects completed in time, so I won't be starting anything major. I have areas dug out and smoothed, but a lot of furniture needs to be placed. I've taken up an apprentice to help me with it. Tosid Oltarengig has improved to adequate carpenter under my careful supervision.

Looking good! :) my hospitals basically look like army medical tents, just an 11x11 room filled with beds and traction benches. Beyond the occasional cuts and bruises I never get anything major injury-wise, my usual world is one where either you're playfighting with kittens or taking down forgotten beasts and sieges. No in-between :P I think exactly ONCE I had a dwarf arrive with a missing arm in a migrant wave, so I usually just focus on burial chambers and leave medical facilites as an afterthought :P

So, this is it. It's 15th Granite, exactly a year from me becoming an overseer. I'm supposed to step down in favour of Canemaster, so be it. Let me just summarize what has happened during autumn and winter.

A caravan arrived in early autumn. They managed to scavenge some thread, cloth and gypsum plaster. I traded for some, because I had to stock our hospital. I received word on 22nd Sandstone that all furniture for our hospital is ready. I've ordered it furnished. Here is the result:
Spoiler: Hospital (click to show/hide)

Queen also demanded a copper sarcophagus for her tomb. That reminded me she doesn't have a tomp yet. I hate that dwarf, so I took great joy in designing tomb for her. I added royal crypt on the northern side of our cemetary and had a copper sarcophagus moved in there. It's not "royal" yet, but it is a start. Some engraving may liven the place up. Also, we don't yet have skilled blacksmith, so the statue is rather plain.
Spoiler: Royal crypt (click to show/hide)

At this point smoothing of workshop halls got finished. With now free dwarf power and some time left, I decided to start working on our own tavern. We already had a place ready for it, so I ordered some chairs and tables to be made. I designated booze and prepared food stockpiles in there and had a kitchen dug nearby. Now here is the problem. Kitchen is really far from farmlands, two levels below and across the whole fortress. What is the difficult, inefficient, loud but totally dwarfy solution? Yep, you've guessed it, minecart! So I've made it so stuff from farms is loaded in a minecart and dumped in kitchen.
Spoiler: Station: Farmlands (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Station: Kitchen (click to show/hide)

And that took all the time I had left. So, the final state of fortress is as follows:
Spoiler: Ground level (click to show/hide)
Bunnies keep breeding in their pen. I've gelded the cats, so we don't have to worry about catsplosion. Possible trouble is when last cat dies of old age, but let's deal with that when that time comes. We still have plenty of time.

Spoiler: Farm level (click to show/hide)
The garbage dump is there just to clear rocks out of the minecart tunnel. Feel free to remove it when dwarfs are done cleaning it. I highlight it because it is easy to miss and then wonder where the hell are dorfs dumping all the stone, when you designated a dump for them just around the corner.

Spoiler: Meeting areas (click to show/hide)
Queen's quarters are still unfurnished. Kitchens and stills have standing work orders to keep drinks and prepared meals at around 100 each. Quern should be automatic as well. I wanted to add standing orders for processing quarry bushes as well, but I've run into trouble with that: Work order: quarry bush leaf condition (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=170675.0).

Spoiler: Hospital & offices (click to show/hide)
Hospital is stocked except for soap. I didn't have time to get around and produce some. Chief medical dwarf's apartment, managers office, and expedition leader's quarters are yet unfurnished.

Spoiler: Industry area (click to show/hide)
I didn't touch the forges/smelters. Woodworks and stoneworks are quite easy to figure out.

Spoiler: Cemetary (click to show/hide)
Let's hope this stays empty as long as possible.

I've done some experimenting with getting the dwarfs to breed. We can either take controlled or uncontrolled approach.

Controlled approach is forcing compatible dwarfs to idle next to each other. I had some luck doing it with burrows. They tend to hang around in assigned burrow, so a small 2x2 burrow over beds and chairs did the trick. I also made a feeding burrow over food & drink and added dorfs to it when they got thirsty or hungry. I removed them from it once they did their stuff there, so they won't decide to hang around in the large burrow instead. They like to carry their food to chairs, so chairs in the small burrow helps them to get them to return there. It is a lengthy process however. I wanted to get my dwarf friendly to chief medical dwarf and three seasons I got them to long-term acquaintances only. I then needed the legendary carpentry skill of my dwarf so the furniture could be done in time.

Uncontrolled approach is to remove all temples, taverns, libraries and leave just a standard 3x3 or 4x4 meeting area. Dorfs will then crowd there when idle, socializing.

One last thing I thought about, but didn't do (mainly because I remembered it now that the save is uploaded). I think the "helped someone" thought is given only for picking up a wounded dwarf (and not cleaning him, feeding him, diagnosing him, suturing him or whatever). Since our chief medical dwarf feels particularly strongly about helping others, it might be a good idea to disable recovery of wounded on everyone else except for her, so when someone gets injured, she gets rid of her unable to help others thought. It is somewhat more severe for her than for the rest of the fortress.

Save PM'd to comicraider.

I got the cats for food xD ah well, at least we have the bunnies to murder. In terms of vontrolled breeding those rooms I was working on should help, being full of masterwprks puts the occupants in a perpetual good mood and I've had considerable success with ot in the past. :)

All in all though, good job. I'll pass the save on and brief the new guy :p

I know, that's why I gelded them as soon as I learned about it and didn't wait for winter. ;D No one harms cats on my watch. :P I'll catch you some dralthas instead.

I've also kept a local copy of the save for debugging work order conditions. I've actually figured out what was wrong, so I'd recommend checking out this thread: Work order: quarry bush leaf condition (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=170675.0) If you want to automate processing quarry bushes in my place by adding a work order for the farmer's workshop in the kitchen, go ahead! (It's no big deal though, we have enough food for a long time.

Not getting any unless the annual caravan brings some. On the other hand, do we need any? Once all food is in barrels/pots, it is protected against vermin, isn't it?

It's true we're not getting outpost liaison, so it's not possible to order them, however.

When I find the time I'm gonna delve back into my pre-embark save in Legends Viewer and find all the dwarf-made artifacts, and write up a shopping list for when we have a military :) They were all made by goblin-raised dwarves (barring the necro slabs) but I distinctly remember there being things like a mace, a bow, some armor and weapon racks. The weapons will be useful, but I also wanna get around to building a grand museum/library dedicated to preserving the knowlege and history of the dwarven "Old World" :P I'll post it all when I've figured out which are which.

I know some of them are in the Goblin fortresses and guarded by dragons and shite, so this may be a ways off :3 maybe once we start getting moods we can find a way to influence what they make and get an artifact armory going xD

Okay, got an artifact shopping list;

Usta Zutosp, "The Strap of Tunneling" - shale spostza (instrument), made by the dwarf Snamoz Devilburns in Menacedwills in 800.

Kept as an heirloom, later stolen by another dwarf, Bosa Confuseplague, who proceeded to lose it. Later found and offered to Vermini Aurasneak the Subtle Seer, a tortoise fiend who rules one of the Goblin civs. Later stolen once again by the dragon Ibmat Flareheated the Torrid Pearls, who kept it as an heirloom.

Gongukrotstong, "Riskedcloistered" - copper low boot, made by the dwarf Usbu Crazyticks in Menacedwills 577.

This one will be tricky, as the poor enslaved dwarf offered his creation to Vermini, the same tortoise fiend as before, and was later stolen by the exact same dragon.

Otezstoslug, "Pickrifts" - pyrolusite toy axe, made by the dwarf Nako Badspin in Menacedwills in 522.

Offered to the goblin Song Perplexedmenaced the Unbridled Rips of Rampage and remains a symbol of the Lord to this day.

Absnulut Mallasuru, "Tamedstable the Curious Watches" - bronze goblet, made by the dwarf Utes Nastysole in Menacedwills in 194.

Offered to our tortoise fiend friend, then stolen by the exact same dragon.

Smas Tubeb, "The Rack of Glaciers" - troll fur tunic, made by the dwarf Stozu Doomleaves in Menacedwills in 185.

Stolen and taken to Dreadclasps, and stolen by countless goblins for centuries until finally being stolen and lost by a wild boar man, later found and claimed as an heirloom by NONE OTHER THAN OUR DRAGON FRIEND in 788.

Osle Snusnad, "The Worm of Elevation", tiger bone weapon rack, made by the dwarf Nako Enterhated in Menacedwills in 142.

Kept as an heirloom, lost, found by a goblin and offered to the tortoise fiend who kept it as a symbol of the Master, where it has stayed to this day.

Lungorotstong, "Playcloistered" - iron bow, made by the dwarf Asno Momentmaligned in Menacedwills in 129.

Stolen repeatedly until 429, where it was found and taken to Hellgrizzles by the goblin Ber Tormentsand (made by a dwarf with a goblin name, found by a goblin with a dwarf name...weird) and offered to Zolak Doomdens the Stormy Tree of Dreading and made a symbol of the Lord.

Rakustmomuz, "Tombcrypt" - quartzite slab, made by the dwarven god Nekol Fatedghost in 35.

Claimed by the dwarf Udib Braidedstake and kept in her tower, Anguishedboats, to this day.

Noteworthy that this is the only artifact related to dwarves that is still in dwarven hands, and is held by not only one of the last dwarves in existence, but one of the oldest living beings in the world. There's a second slab that Nekol made but we only really need one.

There also exist two Vaults holding slabs bearing the names of the demons ruling the Goblin civilisations, the pale pink monster Zolak (who died in 11 so that's pointless), and Vermini Aurasneak the Subtle Seer, everyone's favourite tortoise fiend. His slab is in Cursebastions, a Vault located near the south pole (near Udib's tower.) if any Adventurers want it.

To recap, most of dwarfkind's masterworks are being fought over by a dragon and a freakin' demon, while the rest are hoarded by goblins and one of the last five worldgen dwarves holds a necro slab, with a kakapo man apprentice of hers holding the second. We're in for a giggle, lads.

Luckily in my experience fully gay/asexual dwarves are a serious rarity, although my previous world, Entar, had a surprising amount of bisexuals.

I'll check the save Kametec sent back to me just in case, but if it's numerous enough to raise a problem with the gene pool I'll probably permit a later player to tweak it with DFHack on a one-off basis.

Yeah, companions are allowed. I played Adventure Mode in my spare pre-embark copy of the save and was only able to play as an Outsider, making finding armor a nightmare due to Humans being long extinct. You're gonna need backup, be it living or undead xD

On that note, if you're feeling ballsy I DID give the location of a Vault containing the name slab of the tortoise fiend that rules one of the Goblin Civs (there are two Vaults, but the second demon is long dead), I imagine he'd make a handy little helper >:3 he owns half of the Dwarven artifacts anyway, so him and that Dragon are on my hit list :P

Then I propose a multiplier on the points if you do it just by yourself, like a x2 multiplier, Imagine a solo hero taking down a fortress, It will be awesome, or tragic.

I'll give it another day or two and see if Canemaster's had the time to get around to starting his turn, he mentioned he had some IRL stuff to deal with.

If he's still busy I'll see if he's okay with moving his turn back a little so we can keep the save moving.

I haven't read any of this, but just noting that the fort could make human sized armor, and then the human adventurers can use them.

How could we make human-size armor? Is that possible as Dwarves? o.O

I played around with Adventure mode on a spare copy of my turn's save, only places I can find human gear is on animated corpses hanging around the necromancy tower... never got the chance to pick at what's left of the old Human towns.

When making the armor, use "d"etails, just like with choosing materials, and then you can choose what creature to make the armor for.

You can also go wild when setting details for decorating. Civilization symbol studded on a breastplate and sewed on a cloak to make suit of armor look like a proper uniform and stuff like that. ;)

No problem buddy, just don't kill the queen xD

The next player's from the DF Facebook group so it may take a while to get in touch and dig out the post from a month ago xD shouldn't be too long, and if that falls through I'll move onto the next guy and so on. This is the first time one of my succession games has made it to a second turn and I refuse to let it die like Vault of Horrors did xD

You may have to edit d_init.txt to make sure the extinct dwarfs don't migrate to the fortress. ;)

Cacame is the exception that proves the rule, but Elves have been extinct for centuries on this save and in Adventurer mode it'll only let you play as Human Outsiders xD

I never even made it to the Elven ruins when I started up an exploratory save on my pre-embark copy of the world. Only proof they were here at all is a few animated Elf and Human corpses at the necromancer's tower, ironically run by the last five living dwarves at the time, all centuries old.

By the looks of it in Legends viewer, Elves were the first to die. There were only a small number at worldgen and they all died out fairly quickly from Goblin attacks and megabeast rampages. Oddly enough, one of their governments technically survived for centuries up until about a decade before worldgen finished, it was just inhabited by a couple of animal people who eventually got killed in another attack. Don't yet know what happened to the Humans but I'll assume it's the same story, they both died out fairly fast.

And here's Canemaster's report of his year :) I'll pass the save onto the next guy.

1053-01-15 In the Age of Myth
To whom it may concern...

Finally I've found myself

In these lands

Horror and madness I've seen here

For what I became a king of the lost?

Barren and lifeless the land lies

~The Bards

1052-01-15: I have arrived at my quarry. The Dwarven Fortress of
Sunshield . While the road has been long and beyond dangerous, it has
been worth it to see the last stronghold of the Dwarven kindred left
to this forsaken land! My first impressions have been mixed. The
architecture is somewhat… different... than what I am used to. But it
shall suffice. Some of it is impressive I must admit (the underground
water source for example). But now is no time for gawking. I have
but one year to accomplish my duties both given and self conceived.

~*~ My first order is to complete a dormitory for newcomers. I am
aware that I was requested to build individual rooms, but I find it more
efficient to build a community rooming hall for the typical dwarves and
save the work of single rooms for those stuck up nobles. I know, I
know, I don’t like ‘em either, but it helps keep them shut up about it.
Hopefully. There is the issue of the Queen. This stuck up noble
demands the greatest possible lodgings and I personally have no time
for such a task that will not aid us directly.

~*~ Another task will be to open a proper mineshaft. The earth is
generous here, but the deeper one digs, the greater the riches! But
for now my attention is required elsewhere. The Fort’s bookkeepers
have informed me that we have no arms or armor! THE- OF ALL
THE RIDICULOUS- Deep breath. Drink. Breath out. Okay. We can’t
afford to show weakness in this place. We have no iron but we have
plenty of ore to smelt for it. It would seem that the previous residents
were more concerned with golden hoards than being able to secure
such bounty. Orders to work the smelters and forges as to arm a
squadron have been sent to the halls below.

~*~ As for our livestock and agriculture, it could be worse. Right away
I have requested the butchering of all our rabbits. Filthy things. All
they do is eat and breed and give nothing back (elves incarnate)!
The cats were already gelded before I arrived so I won’t worry about
them. I’ll just keep them near our food and farms to keep rodents
down. I have also constructed wooden nest boxes to collect eggs and
breed chickens. Please note that at least one clutch of eggs needs to
be labeled forbiddenif breeding is to be successful. Hungry Dwarves
would easily prevent this. One last thing on this subject. I have
designated the excavation of new farm plots to the north in the soft
peat. I fear they will not be ready by the time I leave as they are
not of high priority right now.

1052-01-22: Migrants have arrived. Our population has grown to thirty
eight from our previous eight teen! In the meantime, a wood cutter,
Stukos Dastot Muzish, has become possessed. How curious that there
are no dead or ghosts to be seen as responsible. But perhaps
something will come of it? Time will tell.

1052-01-26: Stukos Dastot Muzish, woodcotter has begun a mysterious
construction. He just keeps muttering “...stone…”.

1052-02-06: Stukos Dastotmuzish, Woodcutter has created Dakas Gelut,
a mudstone esesh! He claims it as a family heirloom.
This is a mudstone esesh. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.
It is encrusted with cushion mudstone cabochons. On the item is an
image of dwarves in mudstone. The dwarves are laboring. The artwork
relates to the foundation of Sunshield by the Ancient Burdens of The
Allied Helm in the early spring of 1050.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

~*~ I have sent an order to make armor stands and weapon racks to
make a training room. They shall be made as golden as the Dwarven
spirit!

~*~ Due to a shortage of coal, I have constructed four new wood
furnaces. I have also expanded our stock rooms to make room for more
bars and blocks.

1052-05-18: Fath Inashlňr, Siege Operator has been possessed!

1052-06-18: While mining for flux stone we have discovered an
expansive cavern deep underground. To some relief it doesn’t seem to
be as expansive as the dwarves would like one to think. It doesn’t
even hit any water and seems to be totally self enclosed. While it
may seem safe, we still haven’t found any flux stone to make steel
with.

1052-07-03: Fath Inashlňr, Siege Operator cancels Strange Mood: Went
insane.

1052-07-03: Fath Inashlňr, Siege Operator has gone berserk!
I guess the poor fellow couldn’t find what he was looking for. I was so
preoccupied with mining in the new cavern that I had completely
forgotten about him…

Whoops.

1052-07-04: Fath Inashlňr, Siege Operator has bled to death. We have
lost our first Dwarf today. While this is saddening, we shall not let it
distract us from our task.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

~*~ Dwarves have started digging out the new farm plots to the
north, although I will soon bring their attention back to the mines. If
we find flux stone we will very quickly be smelting iron into steel!

~*~ Further burial chambers are being designated in the lower halls
for less noteworthy Dwarves.

1052-07-19: A caravan has arrived from Astelzon. Migrants have also
arrived. Our population is now at fifty four! While the population boom
is welcome to me, we will need to increase our food stores soon.

~*~ Constructed more beds.

~*~ I have expanded our first squad to its full complement of ten.
We now have an archer squad as well.

~*~ I have totally bought out the caravans entire food market. That
should help last us some time. At least until the next caravan at worst.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1052-09-03: Our Queen Comicraider has taken a fey mood! He (is it a
he?) has immediately rushed down the hall and down a flight of stairs
to claim a mason’s workshop. Hardly slowing for any in her (it is a her,
right?) way, or even to turn. The screams are near unbearable.
“ROCKS” this and “BONES” that. Damn nobles. Just doesn’t say what
kind of rocks. Or what kind of bones…

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1052-09-05: Comicraider has begun a mysterious construction.

1052-09-09: Comicraider has created Lisigsat Zanor Umril, a native gold
millstone!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is a native gold millstone. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest
quality. It is encircled with bands of cushion native gold cabochons. This
object is adorned with hanging rings of chicken bone.

~*~ Well at least that answers one question. Now we just need to
figure what to do with the thing. I believe I have an idea. Although
the project will take time and will undoubtedly be my last command as
acting leader of this fortress.

1052-11-19: It is almost completed. My final work of art. A great, golden
water reactor as to power our golden millstone artifact! I shall call it
Comicon, the Royal Reactor and it should be able to power nearly any
machine we would need. Although it does seem to spray quite a bit of
water...

1053-01-15: With the last floor grate set to be in place, I must take my
leave, and my burden behind for the next caretaker.

~*~ FINAL NOTES:
➢ ~*~= Unknown or otherwise lost date.
➢ There is a lever near the Reactor. Pull it to act as an on/off
switch.
➢ Remember to keep some eggs forbidden to breed chickens.
➢ Northern farms are not built yet and I suggest completing
more extensive farms in the soft peat for food that you
WILL need sooner or later.
➢ Flux stone should also be a high priority. That is the only
missing component to turning all our iron to steel!
➢ Get an army of proper size, strength and training. We will
need it to force the evil of the world into submission!

All the gold was me, I ran out of time faster than I hoped to and smelted all the gold first to make coins hoping the fortress value would eventually attract megabeasts to cage xD

On this day we mourn two deaths.

The death of Stukos, the Siege Operator killed before his time and the first Dwarven casualty in nearly a millenia.

Worse, we mourn the death of the framerate, murdered brutally by the new reactor. XD

I have a dwarven reactor in my Mountainhome on my main save, granted the population being over 300 (~200 dwarves and the rest are visitors) may have a hand in it but the reactor is huge, I think the flowing water does a number on framerate. The infinite energy source is worth it, though. The entire fort is automated to a point it would made the Dwemer jealous xD

Truly, 'tis the price we pay for science.

Might I suggest that, since we have limited numbers of dwarves, we should train everyone in combat and swimming, to decrease casualties.
Also, do we have a tavern, so we can get mercenaries?

No worries, take yer time. If you did accidentally the fortress, I'm sure we'd all love to hear it in the form of a non-canon story xD

Okay.

1st of Granite. 1053.

I wake up from a long night of partying and drinking. I wake up and hope to get back to medical duty, When I am suddenly accosted by the broker! He says "Now sweetcheecks the town got a bit drunk last night. And you've been elected as the new overseer darlin.

Well wambler droppings. This aint good! I just wanted a simple life outside of goblin territory! I dont know how to manage a fort!

Well I guess I have to perservere. According to the head smith we have run out of hematite. I see in the underground passages a few veins of ore. I decide to strip mine the area.

Sure it ruins the look of the passage but who cares! FRESH DWARVEN STEEL.

Looking at our stocks we seem to be doing pretty well. Despite the fact that the farmers think that wine is a proper subsitute for water when farming plump helmets. I do think we need some more clothes because the militias armour seems to be getting pretty battered. Hopefully if my strip mining works we should have enough iron for days.

Felsite.

Yknow what I love! Bolts! My children love bolts my husband loves bolts everyone loves bolts!
boltsboltsboltsboltsbolts............

Now where was I? Ah yes.
There are beetle people in the fort. Squatters really. If they suck up all the wine and leave none for the children we'll have to kick them out. But to be honest they are kinda cute in a way.... Just sitting there in there rooms being little cuties! Actually!

There we go! A little house for the cuties. Maybe I should have asked the queen.... Nah shes sitting upside down in the tavern toilet again and I dont want to wake her up again. I'm sure she'll be fine with it.

Gremlins! Annoying bastards. Well the militia will deal with the problem. And apparently a Giant Tick has broken into the fort and has eaten a farmer! But when I sent the militia the giant tick was found torn limb from limb! Witnesses say that the beetle woman slew the beast! This beetle is clearly no beast! It is a fine young lady! And a young lady needs a name.

Beautiful.

I'll continue my logs later when summer ends

Summer of 1053.

When I last left off I talked about Beetlesaurus the fine young beetle maiden. We'll now be talking about a beetle man.

Hematite 27th

The Armoured House. Also known as the Library of Sunshield has been built! We need to educate the new generation, They cannot all be plump helmet farmers! They have to be plump helmet engineers! Plump helmet scientists!

But we have a big lack of teachers. So it suprised me when the beetle man stood up. He became the library's scholar and has started teaching the dwarves how to read Beetle and the study of plump helmets.

I now know some Beetle myself! And his name is apparently Beetledeed Scrapekey.

Now of course treason is going on in the library right under everyones noses though. Its not even on the scale of refusing to make MOAR BOLTS. Its even worse.

People are eating mussels in the library and staining all the paper. People of Sunshield if you know if someone has commited TREASON. Like this please tell us so they can be given the hammer of JUSTICE. Have a good day!

Malachite-Galena 1053.

A stonecrafter has been possessed by the spirits of long fallen Dwarves! They warn about the start of a scourge but what ever thats heebeegeebee nonsense.

Dammit Kib! I tolf you not to eat Kobold bulbs and plump helmets together! Now look what you've done!

You've caused a riot and made people step all over the new pottery! I had the best craftdwarves in the land make them and you ruined it!

Oh goodie Melbil! I can't wait to see what you create!

That amulet has the spirits of our ancestors. We must keep it safe in the library. Put it on a Pedestal in the library! Dont let word get out to the bonehearted! There cannot be a vile horde of darkness! Smiths! Prepare iron breastplates and silver warhammers!

We are greeted by migrants! They brought a few farmers a craftsman and a few children.

We have and abundance of wood stone and metal. I have decided to make a sentry tower in order to see any threats and react accordingly.

Hooray! Another strange mood!

I wonder what the miner might cook up. For those playing at home make a bet to what he might make!

If you guessed a floodgate that cant be used to get rid of magma and is just generally useless then you guessed correctly!

I have decided to make better weapons and armour for our mace and hammerdwarves. I have a feeling that something dark is approaching. Ever since I touched that amulet I have been feeling uneasy....

I was correct! The silver weapons we sold to the traders has attracted the goblins! A squad lead by a macegoblin and a swordgoblin with a master crossbowgoblin in tow!

Beetlesaurus snuck up on the master crossbowgoblin and took him out. The militia managed to fight off the goblin horde.

After the fight Beetlesaurus and Fikod Stillsilver the Goblin slayer and two other militia dwarves had to be taken to the hospital for their injuries while Erith Atisusan was killed in combat.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And thus I end the Autumn logs. It has been quite an eventful Autumn. My logs shall continue into the winter.

Winter 1053.

We start off winter with a bang. With two dwarves dead. One was brutally killed in the library. While the other one was killed by Beetledeed when they tried to kill a child. The dwarf went crazy after having to carry so many dead bodies. He attacked a dwarf and killed him in the hallway. Beetledeed has insated a no-fighting and no-murder policy in the library.

Due to the stripmine We have an extra 10000 pieces of extra wealth in gold, platinum, silver and iron.

The scouts have been fighting a giant capuchin for the past month now. They still haven't killed it.

Obsidian 1053

The Sentries are still fighting the capuchin. For two monthes they have done nothing but punch this monkey.

When one sentry decides to make his way up the tower he sees a strange figure in the distance.

CYCLOPS! Dispense the militia!

The militia all mobbed the cyclops while the ranged squad fire bolts at it. Unfortunatly one militia-dwarf was left on the mountains with both legs broken and arms broken. Sazir managed to survive but he is still in the hospital.

And of course our sentiments go to Kadol Govoskib. Who killed the vile cyclops.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And thus the end of winter 1053 and my Reign as overseer. I have prioritized getting as much metal as possibly so I hope we have enough to make crafts. I'm ready to hand the save off to the next overseer.

Wait...did we actually get beetle person settlers or are they just hanging around not hurting anyone? xD

Part of me hopes if the dwarves eventually die out again we'll have enough animal people in the fort to keep it going, lord knows why.

Still a decent read even if we suffered a few losses, but for whatever reason we keep getting migrants from Armok knows where so it isnt as bad xD I have an idea concerning burials once the fortress is a little more advanced, anyways. :3

I'm gonna postpone the FB users for a while since they're getting a tad difficult to track down, so Imic's up next if I recall :)

Beetle people, nice. Now get them to making beetle children!

Though, ah, I suppose I should be looking at them more than just beetle factories ^^;;

Hey now, that floodgate isn't useless. It can charm building destroyers (that don't burn it away)!

Wonder if cyclops will save the sentries. I doubt it.

I do still wanna prioritise getting dwarves married for this reason. Seeing as we're getting unlimited migrant waves...somehow... it isn't as important as it was but I still wanna give the impression that we're trying to get a stable gene pool going just in case :P Wanna get the population high for when we eventually start a second fortress so we can get some decently-skilled migrants to help out :3

Oh, I'm gonna look that Cyclops up in Legends Viewer. I think his lair might have one of the old Dwarven artifacts in it.

Also I looked up the Cyclops you killed in Legends Viewer.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Fortress has this to say on the subject of Eyo Glowlarge the Puce Goals..."

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well I'll be damned, we killed a god xD Don't know who worshipped it or if they're still around, but we killed it. Think it might have actually been one of OUR gods xD

No artifacts whatsoever from what I found, but still a decent kill. I prefer to cage these things for later fun, especially if this actually IS in the dwarven pantheon. Imagine going into the temple to worship your god and realising he's actually there, in a cage xD

Nonetheless, his first 20 or so attacks were all in Dwarven holds, and the species were so few in number that he must have put a dent in their numbers.

Retribution must be dealt.

It was inevitable.

Seeing as we're almost done with the turn list and haven't had any new people come for a while, so once the cycle's up I'll retire the fort for the time being and start the Adventurer saves, followed by either resuming Sunshield or beginning to expand and start a second fortress :)

So only thing that really needs to be done is get some human-sized equipment and clothes put together for the Adventurers, so they don't immediately get torn to shreds trying to storm the Necromancer tower because the only remaining Human corpses are still there, and maybe finishing the fortress' defences and military training.

The time for hiding is over.

Soon the dwarves shall retake their homelands.

Alrighty, GPeter's had to pull out, so it looks like the Adventurer turns are next to get underway :) I'll pull the save and have a quick look around the fort (maybe spend a year making gear for the Adventurers) then it'll get started some time tomorrow. I'm not that good at Adventuring so my report will likely be simple ruin exploration.

Depending on the current state of the fortress Sunshield may be retired after the fact, and the next round of games will focus on an entirely new fortress. Gimmicks and themes are welcomed, and it's name shall be decided by the highest-scoring Adventurer. :3

I think goblin kills should be less than 1 point.

I think semi-megabeasts should be worth 5 points (beast lair). Demonic slabs should be 100 points (since they're impossible to get). And notable kills should be worth 1 point (this includes named trolls). Maybe non-notable goblin kills should be worth less as you get more. Like

I can't read the graph either but I see the point you're making. I put Goblin kills at 1 point simply to avoid decimals, as regardless of notable/unnotable the goal is to thin out their numbers :P

I'll rethink the point structure soon, for I'm about to resume the save and get some equipment made for the adventurers and the next phase of turns can then begin :)

Yeah, smelting was kind of an afterthought. I think the embark has flux stone so there MAY be a chance we could get steel but we can just make that a priority in the next fortress.

However it went, I look forward to seeing it :)

I've lost/forgotten to take some images, so there are a few gaps. I didn't realise how large some of them were either, so I've put them in spoilers.

We've struck a deal with the human nomads; we provide them with armour and weapons, they help us fight the goblins.

However, if they are to have a chance, they will need some good equipment. I decided adamantine should do the job. We'll need to do some digging to get it though.

I've ordered the mines enlarged and the caverns walled off.
Enlarging the entrance to the mines.
Enlarging the stairs through the cavern and walling it off.

Mining down, we soon found a second layer of caverns.
They too were walled of fairly quickly.

I was receiving constant complaints from the workers about lack of materials, interrupted only by a strange mood.
I traced the complaints back to some work orders, which I cancelled. The manager was not happy with this.
The moody dwarf produced a prase cabinet. Could be useful for decorating the queen's quarters.
A scene from last years siege, and some yeti or other.

A third layer of caves was reached.
Walling this one up took longer due to constant attacks by hungry heads. The miners and builders had no trouble fighting them off, and soon the area was littered with hungry head skulls and teeth.

One of the scouts was ambushed by a black mamba woman.
They were paralysed and died soon after.
Anger spread through the fortress at their death, and the military was sent out for vengeance!

The miners continued down, and soon reached magma.
I ordered them to come up a bit and dig exploratory tunnels.

At this point a second dwarf went into a strange mood.
Rather dull, save for another image of that yeti. Nice of them to use up some of the hungry head bones, though.

Mining continues, digging around the warm patches of stone.
At this point I'm starting to get annoyed at the lack of adamantine.

Oh no!
There are a lot more of them than last year's siege. They outnumber our military 3 to 1. I order the gate to be closed.
I now realise that the mines are dug from the surface rather than inside the fort. Our miners are now stuck underground.
A tunnel is dug from the lower layers of the fort to the mines, and the stairs up are removed.

Another strange mood!
I don't have time for this, there is fortress defending to do!

Things have gotten worse. Her royal highness comicraider is trapped in the upper layers of the mines, above the removed stairs!
The goblins haven't found her yet, so I order the stairs rebuilt.
Oh, one has found her. She is holding her own though, until this happens:
She is determined not to give up the fight.
It not enough, and the goblin slays her, leaving her body in the mines
(https://i.imgur.com/4vAhEc4.png)

The moody dwarf clearly didn't find what he needed.

UselessMcMiner took them out easily.

A forgotten beast has turned up.
The caves are sealed off, so it can't do anything.

Still nothing from the miners. Almost the entire level has been explored with nothing found and the year is nearing its end. Reports of striking almadine are getting on my nerves.

A fourth dwarf has gone into a strange mood.
Both they and I, however, have failed to get anything done before the end of the year.

Looking at the wiki, I've realised that I could have safely dug through the warm stone, as well as much of it on the layer below, as it is above rather than next to magma. Oops.
Also, the embark looks small, so it is possible that there isn't any adamantine at all.

This also happened at some point, but I can't remember when.

At this point someone could take another year to finish what I've started, or we could give up and do adventure mode without dwarven assistance. I don't mind.

You can resize images by adding a tag for width i.e. [img width=400]. Then can click on the result to see original size.

Prase cabinet is cool, but should have forced a better gem; it's only as valuable as copper. Still, furniture can be a bait.

Ooh, sneikgurls. Shame they decided to make war, not love.

The grate makes for even better buildingdestroyer bait: You can toggle it with a lever, or shoot enemies futilely trying to break through through it. Could set up archery ranges next to it with other end towards the caverns.

Shame the queen didn't actually attack back. I'm sure they'd have eviscrated the goblin.

Damnit xD thought I turned labors off for the queen while she/he/I was assigned to the marital room xD so much for producing an heir ;-; I have an idea regarding the eventual extinction of the dwarves, now the goblins have our scent it's only a matter of time but I know nothing about modding, if anyone does drop me a message.

The forgotten beast attack is primarily why I didn't dig deeper into the caverns, my Mountainhome in another world gets them knocking every other month, but by that time I already had legendary troops. Given what the Adventurers will be up against adamantine would be kinda wasted, especially since it'd likely end up lying in a pool of human blood in whatever megabeast cave/vault/dark fortress they were attacking :P

Anywho, how did the smithing go? A second fortress could alleviate the problem if I settled further away somewhere with flux stone, so it isnt too much of a problem.

Smithing didn't really happen. I, er, got a bit carried away with the adamantine.

This isn't as bothersome as someone connecting the mines to the surface xD I hope whoever it was can live with royal blood on their hands. Poor woman-me died alone.

Iron is readily available and the way I planned the fortress was with the intention of being self-sustaining if the gate is shut, so it seemed to make sense to mass-produce a cheaper metal than to risk loss of Dwarven life looking for Adamantine we'd probably not have enough time to extract and smelt xD If you wanna restart or take another year go for it, I'm way too busy with work to get anything done even if I wasnt still in the throes of DF fatigue ;-;

Failing that, if anyone wants to have a go at getting the armor done, go for it.

If you are happy with me taking two years in a row, I'll carry on in my hunt for adamantine.

If that doesn't work out, I'll restart from where UselessMcMiner left off. We do have flux, so I can make steel equipment.

Edit: There is adamantine, but not much, and it is entirely submerged in lava, so getting it will be very slow. It might be easier to do steel.

Aye, steel's probably the best way to go in that case :P

Feel free to take a second year, and its up to you if you wanna restart from where UselessMcMiner left off (though I'd greatly prefer the MeQueen to not end up goblin chow XD), it's entirely your call :3

I started again, and it was all going well up until a goblin siege arrived right outside the front door. They charged straight in before I could close the door. Went through three queens in as many minutes, before crashing.
Oh well, try again.  ::)

We might want some better defences for the next fort.

I'd be happy to take a turn Fortressing, or perhaps even Adventuring for this! I've been looking to flex my muscles on another DF succession game for a while, now. Put me in if you're still looking for players, please!

Consider it done. :)

We pretty much are the mountainhome in everything but name, there hasn't been a Dwarf-held settlement in 800 years ingame :P I can't even remember if we even have a caravan haha.

First order of the day: digging out marble.

I had a look around the fort while the miners were digging.
Odd. Bedrooms full of statues. Very few bedrooms, at that. 20 for 80 odd dwarves. We need more!
Much better.

The metalworking area was expanded with more smelters and a marble stockpile.
I set the dwarves to work making traps to guard the entrance.

Zuglar had made more than 100 crowns by this point. I wouldn't call it a particularly significant event.

The caves are walled off. No worries.

Can someone please tell čzum that baths and bloodbaths are not the same thing? Someone other than me.

We've got a statue commemorating last years library murder now.

Steel sawblades. 150 of them. Nothing gets in now.
The forgedwarves have now been tasked with making adventuring gear.

The queen got some new decoration for her quarters.
And a much larger tomb.

The bedrooms are finished.

It menaces with spikes of boring.

The weapons have been made and stockpiled.

Time to test the traps.

I ordered the military to take up stations behind the traps, to finish off any stragglers. Unfortunately, they had put all of their weapons in the stockpile with the adventuring weapons. They would see the goblins and charge at them unarmed. Surprisingly, they took out a decent number of goblins.
The remaining goblins seemed reluctant to enter the fort, preferring to hang around in a pile of corpses. Perhaps someone told them about the traps.

Sudden panic.
Panic averted.
Oh. I was right the first time.
Her royal highness is dead. Oddly, no attempt to appoint a successor is made and no information on how she died can be found. I'm guessing that she was caught outside the fort by the goblins, but I can't find a combat report.

No idea how to deal with this. Just close the gates. It can torment the cats.
We need to let the adventurers get the weapons you say?
Alright, open the gates and hope.

We've got a titan sitting outside the fort. It doesn't seem to be preventing retiring the fort, but I'm going to put the save up pre-retire just in case.
The gear for adventurers is on the right as you enter the fort. Don't go down the ramps past the trade depot, the sawblades are at the bottom of them. You are unlikely to survive.

I think those statue bedrooms were supposed to courtship suites.

"not it" on mason.

I hope you built the bone statue in the library.

Sawblades? Safe entrance, expect for wear and jamming with corpses, spying and trap-reporting diplomats, titans, werebeasts, firebreathing dragons, very agile enemies and animals such as peregrine falcons who can just run across the traps and be gone by the time they snap, bolts, things too small to hit, kobold ambushes, and probably few things I'm forgetting.

I think successor takes bit of time. Maybe next year?

Leaving the titan in place means potential fun on unretire, for sure. I don't know if they mess around, though, and whether they'd defend the fortress in case of invasion.

Leaving it in place for your adventurer can be highly profitable, as ice titans are really weak but produce as much fame as tough ones, which means you can immediatelly recruit lot of people.

Of course, succumbing to invasion would have been more intersting (could conquer back the fort with next one), but you do you.

Speaking of which, going to take an adventurer now, or...Who would be next in line, anyway?

I think those statue bedrooms were supposed to courtship suites.

Yep, they were meant to help pair the starting populace up. We weren't expecting to get any more than the two hardcoded migrant waves (since yknow the last five dwarves alive before embark were all thousand year old necromancers), so the plan was to increase our numbers the old fashioned way.

And if nobody else is up for a turn in the fort, adventurers can start doing their thing :) Naturally our new Titan friend gets immediate priority, lest the dwarves die out a second time :P

In terms of succession I think itll pick one at random if there's no heir. I stuck the queen in one of the marital suites to try and get some princes and princesses but everyone else sort of forgot about them I guess.

I still have the most recent save somewhere, but it kinda petered out :( I started a round in Adventurer and got pretty far into one of the two Vaults as per the secondary objective, but the poor treasure hunter eventually got his fecal matter brutally pushed in by the Archangel.

Shame, that divine metal pike was amazing. Really should have just picked up all the divine metal and sent it back to Sunshield.

You're welcome to another turn if I can dig up the save, failing that if I find the time I'm planning a second fortress in this world now that Sunshield is pretty well established :)

I'll just need to find the save, update to the latest version of DF since I haven't played since I last took a turn months ago, scout out some embark points and such when I next have time off work, and we should be ready to go :)

I'll put a link to the post once it's up. The new fort will likely be nearby the original, but that depends on how merciful the nearby land is. Sunshield did take up the entirety of the only Good biome in the entire world.

Embark found, there was a good spot just west of Sunshield. The new fortress has been named Earthenhold, and the new thread's here:

Title: I got some bad news.
Post by: comicraider on December 10, 2018, 12:34:14 am
This'll be the final post concerning Sunshield, as the new fortress is underway.

Sunshield is gone, guys.

Immediately after the fortress was retired so I could start on Earthenhold there was a MASSIVE goblin invasion. The government was pushed out and scattered, and Sunshield herself was destroyed.

At least 80 Dwarves and a beetle woman survived, and headed east back to the original Dwarven ruins. The queen (myself) married during the invasion and eloped with her new husband and a few others to the ruined capital of Gladgold, which is home to a Forgotten Beast that has repelled every Goblin attack since the Dwarven populace was wiped out 800+ years ago. I doubt they'll last.

Two hamlets have popped up with roughly 40 Dwarves apiece outside the ruins of the old fortresses, but they're still right on the Goblins' doorstep. Small groups have settled in the other ruins.

In terms of the battle itself;

The invasions, called the Assault of Clashes and the Bloody Attack, saw 7.555 goblins pour into Sunshield, followed by a second wave of 7,662.

During the Assault of Clashes, 80 Dwarves defended their home, whereas only one dwarf defended the fortress during the Bloody Attack, aided only by a water buffalo and a yak. These three put up more of a goddamn fight than the 80 defenders did before.

The dwarf, Avuz Dreamsyrup the Equivalent Growls of Stabbing, killed 8 Goblins before being struck down.

The yak, Sabremerged the Hairs of Prison, killed 82.

The friggin' Water Buffalo, Coventarches the Hoary Spasm, took out 105 Goblins before being overrun.

These three are getting a masterwork statue in the new temple. Make sure of that, whoever takes over Earthenhold next.

Nonetheless, 200ish kills out of almost 8,000 wasnt enough, and Sunshield was destroyed in late spring of 1054.

This invasion took place days after Earthenhold's expedition was launched.

Never forget. Sunshield will be remembered...and probably resettled. Definitely visited by the military to retrieve the artifacts.

Eventually, but the fact that the fortress was annihilated immediately after retiring it has made me paranoid. UselessMcMiner has had luck raiding Goblin sites, so once we can thin out their numbers enough to prevent invasions that large happening again I'll start the adventurer stuff.
