Title: Shakecloistered [Succession Fortress For Newbies]
Post by: bsnott on June 15, 2013, 12:31:38 am
Welcome to Shakecloistered, the succession fortress.
Our job here will be to build a fortress to last at least 10 years.  If you would like a shot at it, then post a comment! I'll put your story in a spoiler, but make sure that you put a link to your world after you finish your one-year turn. Now that that's out of the way, let's get started!

Probably should have started this in the morning, but I'm too tired to finish spring right now. I'll finish spring (and probably summer too) in the morning, when I wake up. Autumn and winter will most likely come later in the day, since I have a party to go to.

Here's my update for spring. It took way longer than expected, my playtime kept getting interrupted by things that couldn't wait. I might play summer later tonight, not sure. I'll definitely finish the year off tomorrow though.

You're both in. Time limit is at least one season every three days. If you get inactive, you will be skipped. You can host it anywhere, as long as it is a protected site. I personally use Mediafire, as it is free and easy.

Yes ;) I used it. My main DF setup now is the Masterwork Dwarf Fortress, for the added difficulties brought on by the additional monsters and races. But I have yet to design a fortress super-weapon, simply because the pipe mechanics are beyond my figuring out.

Don't worry, rescuing a fortress from nearly complete oblivion is half of the !fun!. I'm wondering what Dewboy is going to leave for me in this one, AND in Boltrinse. I find it funny, I get to complain about the state of two fortresses Dewboy leaves for me o.o. Though it looks like this one will be the most !fun!, unless someone beefs our military up. Boltrinse features a mysterious tanner who has grown attached to a crossbow, despite his, apparently, non-military status. I guess he's a hunter, but I haven't looked at the save file yet. When my turn comes, I fully intend to place him as head of a crossbow corps, iffen I can find him.

Warning, lots of RP will be found in my posts, which involves a very cranky dwarf that is a weird combination of Bruenor Battlehammer, Gimli, and a cranky wereass.

Good news guys! I haven't totally destroyed the place yet! In fact it's looking pretty nice, you'll see when I upload my reports. I haven't really done anything that great in terms of production, but the fortress layout should be coming along.

Thats weird that your after me in both fortresses. Im a pretty lax on crazy stuff, I doubt I'll kill this place. I'm going to beef up military in both forts. Can I use a danger room?

I have never used one, so my answer is a resounding yes. But use training weapons I'm the weapon traps.

Enough fun to kill all of the dorfy dorfs? If so, we can just revert to Mouseshy's save and go from there. I'm just gonna have us go to year 10, and then the save is open for anyone to play.

As traps, yes, as danger room things, stick with training weapons. Same training to defense, less likelyhood of beheading our precious dorfs.

Not to mention 29 Dwarves with no assigned labours but 1 Dwarf (Dakost) has 27 labours

Guess what.
I have another fort to manage, and this one looks even worse than usual. Ash littered over the ground (although the trees seem to be alright), dead goblins on the doorstep, dead dogs next to them. They even put a name tag on the body! “Letariicati” it says. Ah, more dogs, alive ones this time! Well we at least have enough guard dogs. But, what are you doing here with your pups? Get out of here yu scurfy dogs! AND STOP THROWING THINGS AT ME YOU STUPID DWARFS!!

And where is my office? What?! No idée you say!
Well, then I’ll take this office of some random planter. Why does he even have an office? He’s a planter!
Oh, am I the planter? I didn’t even know I could plant. Well, you learn something new every day.
AND STOP THROWING THINGS AT ME!! I WILL BUILD YOUR STUPID GRAVEYARD.
And why is there a random giant mushroom in front of my office? Chop it down!
And throw your tantrum somewhere else!

Pff, finally some rest in my office.  Can’t I have a single second of rest in here!!??? What? A child killed someone? What a loser was that poor dwarf, losing against a child. But fine, I’ll convict him.
Some time later….
Wow, that’s one loud kid. Let’s block of the door and never speak about it.

Kidding.

What’s the matter with these kids by the way? All of them are or VERY angry or completely nuts or they are completely depressed! I hate this place already.

Some more time later. Why did anyone place cage traps? Now im getting spammed with dwarfs: WHERE IS THE CAGE? Because some stupid crow men ran into them.

With all these tantrums im going to build a little mine fort, just for safety…. GET HIM DOGS, HUNT THE SKULKING FILTH DOWN, THE SCURFY DOG! AND NO IM NOT TALKING TO THE DOGS!
Everybody seems happy EXCEPT the kids. Says something about the youngsters of these days.

octobomb: No beekeepers to be seen, most of the unhappy peeps are kids, thet are just puching eachother non-stop.

And this is going VERY slow. Played for an  hour and im ALMOST out of the FIRST month. ( 30 FPS)
Im going to try to improve it.

I am officially afraid. Will my computer be able to handle it, or will Shakecloistered be a victim of the mythical FPS monster?

Doubt it. By the time my turn comes however there may be some atom smashing to do
Edit: What I meant was my ancient machine is alright currently. Anyways, post your ideas for the demise of Shakecloistered - I have my own ideas but I'd like to see yours. I don't know if there is a way to have 200 dragon arrive outside your fortress, Br I doubt it, so unless proven otherwise (and please do) that kind of thing I can't do.

Well it's only been a 3 years and it's already smack bang in the middle of a ashen wasteland and all the children are going insane so we're off to a good started on the unofficial Boatmurdered 2.0.

We need some pachyderms, though. And we need to turn them into war elephants, elephant stew, elephant bone crafts...if we can, let's make some rooms with elephant bone walls, floors, and furniture.

No, we lose all of our dwarves to something better, and train the child to become legendary, and have them kill merchants from anywhere, and die in a siege.

If we manage to build a self-sustaining fort, we could do that and have a continuing above ground defense force composed entirely of demons. We could chop trees in the caverns, run on farms, and booze production. Then we can sit back and watch vile forces of darkness and pissed off elves storm the gates only to be eaten by an endless horde of demons.

((First report is up! Aside from the Candy, not a whole lot interesting happened. To those of you who don't know what the Candy is and don't want it spoiled, avert your gaze!))

Spring

I've just arrived at the fortress of Shakecloistered, where my king has sent me to live. More like die horrifically. Anyways, as I'm coming in, I notice that there is, in fact, quite a bit of blood splattered on the ground. One of the dwarves tells me it's from a hill titan. Rubbish, I say! Titans are just myths! They... They ARE, aren't they?
I looked around at what we had and I was appalled to see that we had no bookkeeper and no manager! This had to be filled AT ONCE! I've chosen a bowyer that had fairly little to do named 'Mosus Olengeb'. So far, this hasn't actually been that bad. Wait, the miners are doing WHAT? Well, evidently the miners are digging out a long, wide passage leading to nothing at all! I suppose I may as well let them get on with it, since there is not a whole lot that I need them to do right now, and they will begin to grow more experienced.

*Sigh* I've had some bad experience with nobles before, but mere minutes after I walk inside, they all start demanding that I give them better rooms! The mayor even has the beard to make DEMANDS this early!

You know, I thought the entrance actually looked quite nice. Then I looked behind the main gates. The land is turned to ash, only the occasional tree stands, and I think I see the charred remains of more than a few creatures.

Well, great. One of the kids just started foaming at the mouth, shrieking, and attacking dwarves. As much as I hate to do it, I think I may need to call in the militia.

It is done. The child is dead.

These owlmen are getting very annoying. I'm somewhat tempted to try and set up a squad of marksdwarves, if I could understand their rather suicidal tendency to run at the enemy rather than shoot.

GAH! Giant Gray Languors have invaded, and one made of with Kithaldumur! I've sent the military in full force to take them out! THOSE FILTHY MONKEYS WILL PAY!

Phew... They're all dead. In the mean while, I dug around the flooded caverns, and told the miners to start digging for the great Magma Sea. May Armok bless us with His Holy Fire!

The other two layers of cavern have been found, and in the third, a magma pool was present. I may begin plans soon for magma furnaces.

Ah, the Slate air has begun to descend. Spring is truly in its peak!

AHA! While walking through a layer of the caverns, one of the miners has found the magma sea proper! And he's not on fire, to boot!

Hmph! The goblins thought they could sneak in and steal from us! Of course, the war dogs took them down quickly.

Some miners have found some almost-melted rock. In the surrounding areas, we've begun strip mining, to see if we cannot find the legendary blue metal.

I have great news! We've found it! It's in the Great Magma sea, so it will be tricky to get it out, however.

Okay, I'm fairly certain that the Admantine is only partially within the GMS. I've begun mining on the side that is not submerged in magma. Soon, very soon, we shall have the single greatest metal.

We've begun extracting the admantine very, very carefully. Should a single miner dig even a Urist too far, then all four miners, their picks, and the admantine will be up in flames. The miners, the picks, they can be replaced. But the admantine? Damage the tiniest piece, and I will have your beard.

This is a sad day. A miner has been trapped by an unforeseen accident.
While mining, he accidentally uncovered a part of the magma from a lower part. This lead to it springing up. Luckily, it was only one. He is not dead, as the magma is flowing out of itself and then back in repeatedly. Plans have been enacted to try and save him, but the chances look grim.

We were able to rescue him! I've set up a Craftsdwarf workshop and I will soon have a forge ready for a peasant draftee-smith and the one dwarf skilled in strand extraction.

Unfortunately, BlackOctoberFox has been killed by an unknown dwarf. Our prayers are with him.

*Sigh* Migrants. More resource-leeching, complaining, idiotic dwarves. None of the look very useful. There is a pair of masons, a few fisherdwarves, and a Suturer.

Ah, felsite. It has to be one of my favorite months. It still has the crisp, clean aspect of Slate, and it's much warmer as well.

Hm. It would seem that a trader has come to trade with us, but we don't actually have a depot.

A couple of ghosts have risen from the grave. The aren't causing much trouble, but I would like to get them buried ASAP.

Oh great. I've started trying to make some admantine weapons, but guess what? The fortress has NO REFINED COAL! And then, when I went to refine some, I found that the fortress also has nothing to refine into coal! I've ordered the fortress to produce 30 units of coal to compensate.

Lovely. Just lovely. Apparently, I neglected to give orders to make the admantine thread into wafers. Honestly, if I hadn't seen it in action for myself, I'd declare that it's more trouble then it's worth!

Well, I've looked at the crimes that have gone on. Nothing had happened recently except for the mysterious murder of BlackOctoberFox, but I just decided to weave some wild tale about how a giant grasshopper came into the fort and killed him. The nobles ate it up and FINALLY left me alone about something.

And with that, spring has come to the close. Hematite has started.

Yeah, I know. I'm trying to find a way to keep us from a tantrum spiral. I'm not very good with them, might want to call in a specialist

Oh dear.  We can do this!  Shakecloistered SHALL NOT CRUMBLE (i hope.  Given the tantrum spiral though, I'm not sure.  Hope the damage control is going reasonably okay.)

Mean is a shortening of newbie, meaning to be a newcomer to something. I believe noob is a more Internet related version, also spelt as n00b.

Also noob is most often used today as an insult while calling someone a newbie is not meant to upset. I think, don't quote me on this one.

Edit: Just took a look at the fortress and there are some things that NEED to be improved like open entrances to caverns Etc. Expect update in a day or two, depending if i'll have any plans to prepare for my birthday.

This is my dwarf, I'll try to keep as close to his character as possible so if i say something that upsets you know that I could have used gentler words but didn't for Roleplaying sake.

Ok here is my final update. No in-character moments, nothing much happened. Loads of Pictures though.

First of all:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We are a barony now.

And now for the summary of the fort. I won't show every single thing, only new additions and important changes.

Let's take it from the top shall we?

Old entrance had been sealed:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Above that is unfinnished tower, from top to bottom:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Next main level, namely Grand Hall and top of Bedroom Block:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And bedroom layout:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Dug out Noble level:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've posted guards in front of Treasuries and Royal Throne Room, just for RP's sake:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Catacombs, They need an expansion btw.:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Jail and new hospital with well, well is vital for operations in hospital, wound cleaning etc. Also both need furniture. Don't use copper chains in jail though, it is a very bad idea:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And my magnum opus, the Killing Pit. It has some design flaws, mainly anything with wings can get out without sweat but it still can be useful. This place is intended as a training ground for archers. Just post the archers around the fortifications and than drop enemies. Careful with enemy archers, they retaliate:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And our expanded forges:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And now the most fun part! Artifacts and Enemies!

First let's start with ONLY enemy that turned up! Big welcome to Mr.Bison!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And this is first artifact made during my turn:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
No comments on this one, it's pretty standard.

My favorite artifact by far, My Chair!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I appreciate the elf killing titan. Also my Dwarf likes anvils so it is an added bonus. Also it is made of glass! It is a Dwarven version of the Iron Throne in that you can really hurt yourself by sitting alone! Dwarfy!

Artifact number 3:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A memento to one of our fallen comrades, let us show our respect by a moment of silence.

Artifact number 4:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I hate this one personally, shows weakness.

Aaand the winner of The Most Useless Artifact Ever Created:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This must be the worst artifact I've ever seen, yes worse even than artifact earring. Earrings do not pretend to be something they are not.

And now for something completely different. Did you ever wonder why we never get caravans other than dwarves? Or why gobbos never visited? If yes take a look at these pictures:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And now something kind of relevant, I was thinking about making a spinoff Thread with me as a sole ruler of Shakecloistered. You know, to see how different the fort will get between me and other guys. However only challenge without goblins are Clowns. I could prepare to take them on and try to win but first i want to find out if others want to see this. Please leave a reply with your thoughts.

Strike the Earth!

EDIT: Why do I feel i'm forgetting something? Oh Crap that's right! One more thing!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Do whatever you want with it^^.

Title: Re: Shakecloistered [Succession Fortress For Newbies]
Post by: sevenredreturns on August 20, 2013, 11:42:43 am
the idea of magma powering something like that terrifies me.  Also I have been looking around the fort some... and wow.  My framerate is hovering aroung 4 and 5.  This may take a small amount of time XD

Funny thing is it's at taht rate... only when there's combat going on.  When the sparring stops, it goes up.  Odd.
Title: Re: Shakecloistered [Succession Fortress For Newbies]
Post by: exodius1 on August 20, 2013, 11:51:54 am
Turn temperature off, should really help. Or lower your graphical fps that also may help. There are loads of methods to maximize your framerate. :)
Also Killing Pit was intended as a target practice so using magma would remove it's value. Unless you mean as a clean up, than yeah it would be amazing.

I'm just a mechanic.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That's all I ever aspired to in my life.  Unfortunately in this hole in the ground, things have gone shaven beards and well now I seem to be in charge.
I have a mate.  I've not seen them in years.  At least the last guy had some sense and started dragging this place into order.  He also seems to have left a to-do list a few miles long... if I can even put a full length to it.  It's more like notes hammered to walls.  Either way, they're notes, and they're a direction.  I'll have to go with that.  It doesn't hurt (or help...) that he seems to have left a lot of standing orders of cruft to finish.  I'll assume he had a reason for it, so I'll let it be for now.

Oh what a delight, you are much better at writing than I am. Also I have already designated zone where the sand is, you can find smelters responsible for collecting it, and clay for that matter under F5, F6 or F7, i don't remember which one. Hold on I'll check....

It's F6, do not unsuspend those orders though, it stops it from being charged with managed orders. Also I use manager a lot, kind of in character I guess since my dwarf is a manager, and a bookkeeper. And let's not forget the Baron as well. I love when everything goes according to plan. :D

EDIT: And that is why I sealed of the caverns.

Title: Re: Shakecloistered [Succession Fortress For Newbies]
Post by: sevenredreturns on August 22, 2013, 10:40:30 am
Alright.  Alright.  I think I've got a grip on things here.  at least slightly.  I'm being notified repeatedly of things that were finished at Exodius' request.  I'm not complaining about that, the sooner they get done his stuff - I KNOW ABOUT THE SAND!  Don't make me make you take a tour of the magma sea.

At least the people yelling me about iron are yelling about something I can actually deal with.  I really need to deal with the efficiency of this place.  That begins now.  There are also people yelling about some sort of skinless poisonous beast.  I checked the walls down there myself, and they are secure.

Spoiler: The poison (click to show/hide)

Step one:  No more of this lugging everything about by hand.  I know, I know, devices to aid us cost resources, but frankly, we're swimming in cruft after Exodius got the brilliant plan to buy an entire caravan on credit???  of course those will have to wait until the other forgework is done, unless I can step them up in production a bit.  I'm sure he won't mind.  I just... won't tell him.  Not that I can hide much from our bookkeeper but I can try.  At the very least making some barrows will hopefully increase our efficiency.

Step one B: It's almost as if the storage plan, except for the kitchens, is "shove things wherever you can".  ... This needs to be fixed.  I can find some rhyme or reason but we have people working in extremely cluttered workshops which only makes them work slower.  On a hunch, I did see what was stored in our masons' shops.  Piles upon piles upon PILES of stone blocks.  HOW. More storage - PROPER storage.  Designating a stockpile JUST for the furniture now - currently the furniture is lumped in with blocks of stone?? Nobody can tell what's what.

Step two:  Minecart routes.  I'm not sure I want to put in tracks yet, those are a good way to get dwarves killed and I don't have enough of a grip on this forsaken hell hole (by Armok's beard, I've never seen dwarves move more slowly in my life!) to try adn get them made at the moment. I 'll settle for the carts.  That will at least let us move larger quantities of common goods.  I plan on using that at least for ores.  ((And may I not kill any dwarves with this.  However I saw this method and it seems safe enough...  seems.))

Step three:  Try to get a good supply of bins forged so we can shove stuff in them so it can stop lying around everywhere, cluttering the place up.

Step four:  Stop people from needing to run forever and a day to get iron bars!  Actually that's going to become more of a priority or by my beard, I'll go mad.

Let's not even get into the hives the magma forges are giving me.  It's almost as if they were plopped down whever there was some magma!  I'll get our miners on helping me remedy this problem.  That'll notch in well with trying to improve the efficiency of our smelting.  Stopgap measure is adding another magma forge down there.

Step five: ... Do we even have any soap?!  Not that I need to be bathed oranything, but the hospital needs it.  If not...

Spoiler: Monkeys?! in MY farm?! (click to show/hide)

Of for the love of... What is it NOW?!  Someone's barking at me that they can't store something because there's monkeys.  I'm not kidding.  Monkeys.  That's about the time the screaming started, and before I really knew what was going on, those monkeys had killed someone.  I thought we had traps for...

WHY DID NOBODY PUT ANY TRAPS ON THE PATHWAY INTO ARE ARMOK BE DAMNED OUTPOST?!
((ooc:  I was actually wondering that, by the way.  I'm to blame too, not seeing the weakness))

Spoiler: Hastily placed traps (click to show/hide)

I hastily ordered some be put there but of course. the monkeys scared off those who were going to put them in place.  It didn't take long for me to turn the military loose on them.  Thankfully, the monkeys managed to not outrun all of them.  There are several dead monkeys now. though unfortunately, we lost a marksdwarf, one Thob.  I ordered him to be buried in his section of the catacombs - there was thankfully many glass coffins free (Glass is a rather good coffin material.  We can venerate our dead military, and more importantly, get a very good look at what killed them.)

However, I think, related to this issue... well...

I engraved a slab to this weaver, because I have no idea where their body went because of course everyone here is too beardless to do a simple thing like KEEP TRACK OF CORPSES.  By Armok's hiruste <selection looks crossed out>  Things like that are what was killing morale before!  That and corpses laying in the hallways, rotting.

Things seem to have calmed down some.  There are some recovering in the hospital I didn't know we had upstairs.

Speaking of hospital, I had to corner Exodius and ask him if in the pile of cruft he ordered if he happened to get his hands on some soap.  ... Which is the point where he found me and told me WE MUST HAVE AN ANVIL.

It's like he's trying to run the fort from the shadows.  Besides... we... already have anvils? I think?  Unless he wants his own made out of silver in his room?  I might just do that. I at least did commission the anvil to be made. After I perhaps convince the military to take the occasional break in their training.  I admire their dedication, but the constant sparring is giving me a headache.  I really need to finish their barracks.

((OOC:  Honestly the constant sparring KILLS my fps.  I stopped the sparring, it jumped up from TWO to about 85.))

Beginning of summer note:  I understand how using blocks is far more efficient than using raw stone.  HOWEVER.

Do we really need so many?!
Title: Re: Shakecloistered [Succession Fortress For Newbies]
Post by: exodius1 on August 22, 2013, 11:58:42 am
Blocks were there before i arrived, in Shakecloistered 1.5 i'll just dump them on caravan i think. And no traps cause I moved the entrance. They're all below the rutile bridge. I really did not have time to clean up anything else than kitchens, nobles, graves and quarters.

And I know it is annoying, I was hoping he will demand silver goods so you could make crafts and stuff but yeah.

haha yeah I know the blocks were.  I wasn't blaming them on you, though it probably sounded like I was.  I was just going O.O when I saw HOW MANY BLOCKS we had.  I'll be happy with clearing them out of the workshops some.

Ah well .  Also please note that any grumpiness is in character :)  I, the player, am having a lot of fun!  XD It's just fun playing Red as being perpetually frustrated :)

UPDATE : Summer

Summer has begun and at least things are running more smoothly.  I've started the project of clear the mason's shops of blocks - however construction has begun on a new set of crafting quarters.  Plans are for a series of stockpiles in the floor adjacent so that there shall be all the materials needed at a moments notice to crafters.  That at least should make things easier for these bearded idiots to make things more efficiently.  Our current system of "workshops wherever we can make room" has got to go.  I've always thought a ring system would work well and I'm excited to get to try it.

I have been checking who was on "feed and water those in the hospital" duty.  Because those SHAVEN IDIOTS let someone die of thirst!  By Armok's hirsute ballsack!  STEP ONE in taking care of those in the hospital is GIVE THEM FOOD AND WATER.  By Armok's beard.  I'm surrounded by idiots who need a tour of the magma sea!  After I shave you and knit a sweater set from every hair on your body!

I set the child to be buried... and shortly after that, an... unwelcome guest showed up.  And unfortunately for me, it didn't show up in the caverns.  It showed on the same level as our entrance.  Fantastic.  I hate the summer.

Thankfully the Roc stood little chance against our military - in the end suffering from a terrible case of "warhammer through the brain", but not before it managed to kill one of our planters, Risen.  He will be swiftly buried both out of respect and because I hate ghosts.  The fact that the Roc even got inside was due to a terrible case of the military not being able to get up to the roof fast enough to prevent it from flying down there.  This is because we have NO ROOF.  Why do we have no roof? WHY.

That said, I focused my attention again inward.  I really need to help solve the efficiency problem.

While I was focusing on getting the new workshop quarter set up A dwarf started running through the fort as if possessed! He claimed to have been struck by sudden inspiration.

Spoiler: A dwarf with an idea (click to show/hide)

I kept an eye on him carefully - I've known drawves taken by such moods to go mad.  Claimed a craftsdrawf's shop. I'll have to keep a careful eye on him.  While keeping an eye on him my attention was brought to the fact that many hallways and stairs were only wide enough for one dwarf to squeeze by at a time!  That won't do.  I've ordered much widening to occur after the crafting quarters are dug.

Thankfully the shop he claimed was relatively near the crafting quarters... but nowhere near the current wood storage.  I am going to be moving the wood storage as soon as I have the room dug but for now our crafty dwarf is doing a lot of running up and down stairs to get wood.  I've seen him grab three logs so far.  And a couple gems.  and some Copper.  This had better be worth it. That's a lot of materials.

Unrelated to the general flow of summer, some incidents that I don't recall the timing for but I've noted down for the sheer fact that they confuse me greatly.

Our mayor has been hollering for bucklers.  As soon as we got those finished?  We're not allowed to export them.  I... hope he enjoys his bucklers?
(Exodius is still yelling for anvils.  I've COMMISSIONED FIVE.)

Spoiler:  Enjoy the bucklers? (click to show/hide)

People are leaving their clothing everywhere.  I'm wondering why sometimes, such as when on a standard patrol I find a pair of pants in the block stockpiles.

... What was that dwarf doing with those blocks?

Can I be dwarfed by the way, male.

Bsnott, Flameboy, Exodius the First and Red atm anyway, we may have some missing due to unfortunate circumstances with FBs in earlier turns. Or so i've heard.

Also you can choose specific dwarf, many are listed in one of my reports, the one i did not finish to be more specific( Reply #161 on: August 18, 2013, 06:53:12 am ») If you choose one of them i can quickly incorporate you into Shakecloistered 1.5 (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=130203.15). Be sure to drop by but only if you are prepared for spoilers, and massive ones at that.

Warning: that list is most likely outdated by two migrant waves and/or several deaths.

PS I may try to stream DF today (24/08/2013) at 9pm British time. It will be my first real stream so if you are not afraid of weird accents please come by and tell me how does it look. Stream will be here (http://www.twitch.tv/exodius1).

Strike the Earth!

Autumn 138

Autumn has begun, and of course someone (I think Exodius?) brought to my attention that I completely forgot about the migrants.  we've gotten quite a few these past two seasons, roughly 24, split in groups of 17 and 7.  I frankly told them to do what they were happiest doing, and haul as needed.  I figure if they're doing jobs they like, they'll do them more efficiently.  Most of them have been, frankly, exclusively hauling, as part of my stockpile reorganization.

The artifact I mentioned last season is finished.  I am speechless.  Truly. There are no words to describe what a dwarf will make when... thus inspired. (Armok's beard would it be too much to ask for something useful to someone not below the age of three?)

I will admit, however, while not a terribly efficient use of resources (I have no idea how he got that amount of material into that hammer but from the scraps I saw in the workshop, most of it was wasted), It is indeed well crafted.  I hope he's good enough at crafting now that he can help make trade goods.

Work on the crafting area continues apace.  I've scheduled one more floor to be dug out so as to have a good place to store finished goods.  I've begun the relocation of hte masonry and the woodworking shops, as well as their requisite materials down to the crafting level.  Furthermore, I've moved craftsdwarfs shops and jeweler's shops... mechanics workshops and I'm hoping we can manage to get some soap production going.

The most exciting thing this season was the traders coming from the mountainhome, and not a moment too soon.  I took the opportunity to purchase many metal bars we've yet to find in our mining. I also obtained more raw food materials to prepare more meals.  Actually the traders are still here, in part delayed by the fact that our mayor kept deciding either sleeping or planting seeds was more important than helping procure goods we need to survive out here.  What do I know?  I'm just the Armok be damned overseer right now.

I've also finally gotten around to at least getting the barracks finished.  There's not enough room yet for everyone to sleep at once but they ahve a place to be other than in the middle of one of our halls.  I've also been working on properly placing the floor hatches in the archery training pit.  I still need to commission a lever for them but thankfully we have plenty of mechanisms in reserve for just such a thing.

Interesting trend noticed with beardless idiots requesting things to be made.  They immediately seem to ban their export after I get it made.  They must really like their things.  Finally got anvils so Exodius shut up about it.  Mayor wanted bolts, he got bolts, now he doesn't want them to leave.

End of season notes:

Someone's possessed.  Seems to have decided to make something in the clothing workshop.
Spoiler: Possessed?  Really? (click to show/hide)

Had to panic a bit and make raw green glass.  All of our glass was made into blocks.  Coffins finally finished.  Now I just need to get the rest of the iron stuff made... which means we need to make iron faster.  With only two smelters, it's very slow.  Am expanding magma works to account for this.  Hoping I can get that done by end of winter.  Truth be told the area has not yet been designated.  I'm still drawing up the plans.  Part of what has gotten in teh way is they are built SO low that magma lakes are getting in the way of attempting to expand.  I am hoping to raise the smeltery works up a few levels so that they instead just touch the tops of the magma sea.

Will try to at least PLAY through winter tonight.  Again, sorry for the delay, I had a LOT going on this weekend.

Another wonderful update^^. Also you do not need mechanisms for those hatches, even if you forbid them dwarves should still pit animals and enemies down them, when hatches are connected to lever they lose that ability.

Winter 198

The artifact is done - Again, it is truly great, as well as being something actually usable by an adult. It seems the madness that takes some dwarves does seem to listen to reason.  The only unfortunate thing is that some forms of the madness leave no learning behind - and this was one of them.  I wish ghosts would be a bit more considerate.

Spoiler: must...smelt...more... (click to show/hide)
I've begun some work on growing the smelting works.  This is hampered by the fact that I don't know quite where the top of the magma sea is and I needed to build our iron production with some speed to attempt to get the furniture for the Captain of the Guard's quarters finished.  I still didn't finish all the furniture but so long as the smelteries keep going...

Spoiler: He must be joking (click to show/hide)
What is it with Exodius and ANVILS?!  THIS IS MANDATE THREE.  THREE.  WE ARE SWIMMING IN ANVILS (I need to make more forges - or more likely, leave that to my successor, with how late in the year it is growing)  But Exodius.  WHAT.  IS YOUR ARMOK BE DAMNED FETISH.  FOR ANVILS.  BY ARMOK'S BEARD ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS GO DOWN TO THE FURNITURE STOCKS.  THERE ARE SEVEN OF THEM IN THERE I THINK. By Armok he was a capable leader but he seems to have lost his... whatever he's left to lose.

I am being truthful though.  We have many anvils.

Spoiler: Crafting floor (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Storage Floor (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Materials Floor (click to show/hide)

I've focused inward a lot, in the new crafting area.  All three floors are completely dug out now.  I never got the opportunity to set up the minecart system I wished to.  Truthfully I never got the chance to even start it.  However the way things are current set up, we have a place for finished crafts, a place for furniture right next to it, There's room for more stockpiles, however I've not designated it yet, there not being a true need yet.

In the materials floor there is a stockpile for stones that have been determined to be useful economically, a section for wood right below the carpentry shops, a section for gems under the jeweler's shops, and a section for cloth below the cloth shops.  They are not terribly full yet (Except for the stone) but I was planning for our crafting area to be able to expand easily.

I've also built at least one of most work-

Spoiler: UGH (click to show/hide)
FEH!  By the hirsute ballsacks of Armok what idiot put the butchery INSIDE THE FORTRESS!  There is SOMETHING in there that is rotting and I can barely see through the stench caused by the unfortunate decision by that quivering pustule!

End of Winter thoughts:
Spoiler: End of Year Stocks (click to show/hide)
I cannot say I succeeded in all of my aims.  Nor can I say I failed.  I wished to make things more efficient and I succeeded to a degree.  We are no longer using all of our iron faster than we can make it, with the added smelteries.  I have worked to make our crafting less chaotic, as well as having our craftsdwarves make crafts to increase our trade economy.   I've made some small steps at repaying the debt that Exodius left us. I've built at least one of each workshop I can think of that would be useful.  I hope whoever follows me will know more what to do with the military because I didn't know how to handle them at all.  It was like they were in a different outpost altogether from me.

Unrelated, a notice came to me while I was finishing these notes.  It seems that we are passing into an age of Legends.
Spoiler: Age of Legends (click to show/hide)

Under my control this fortress will flourish, and I will finally be able to receive the accommodations I deserve, I will be able to give my self everything I deserve, AHA HA HA HA HA!!!!! I suggest imgur. It's simple, free and useful. Just click on the picture and copy and past the bit that says BB code. Else, use img tags (the symbol of a picture frame directly below bold and put the image URL in the middle, or write the tags out: (img)*image url*(/img). Bu remember to use square brackets.
If you can't get the image URL right click and select open image in new tab.

I personally use imageshack.us just because I used to use it when i was in Poland. It does give you prepared links when you upload a pic as well so you just copy and paste it.

How is your FPS?

Also I thought my Dwarf was power-hungry. You proved me wrong sir, compared to that paragraph even Exodius from 1.5 is a stable and rational individuum. Excelent, Keep Up the Good Work^^

Also the quarters you just claimed were designed for our Vampire King^^ You did read my posts right? Just kidding, now worries. I mean about reading, our king really is a vampire.

(In shakecloistered1.5 I would like my dwarf to in story try and do stuff like attempt to become captain of the guard.
Overseer Journal 2nd granite, 139: I have appointed myself as Mayor, I plan to appoint myself as Baron soon.Overseer Journal Overseer Journal 3rd granite, 139: WHAT THE F***, it turns out I can not seem to remove Exodius1 from his position and appoint myself instead. IT'S HIS FAULT FOR ALL I HAVE SUFFERED RECENTLY!!!

I have ordered all the chest cabinets and stuff in his room to be removed and have had a refuse stockpile be designated in his room, that'll teach him, SO EXODIUS1, WELCOME TO F***ING SHAKECLOISTERED, HOPE YOU LIKE MIASMA!!! I've also taken away his doors, silver is far to good fro him!

22th granite, 139: ARGGHHH!!! I've found out that there's no platinum to make furniture out of, I'll have do use gold instead!

Oh my, oh my. First of all it's Exodius the First thank you very much and if you continue to treat me this way I may refuse to inform you about Loan we took from Mountain Homes. His Majesty will not be happy about that, will he now? >:-)

And You are supposed to write your own bits for 1.5 along to mine. I may try to change things but first i would want you to know that captain of the guard is under my personal jurisdiction. I wanted to give you a position of Crafts Guild Master, a much more lucrative and powerful position, but if you want to scheme your way up to becoming my personal lap dog than fine^^. Just start posting incharacter bits, like your displeasure about being removed from the Overseer line or something. Just so I can get feel for your personality and write you in my updates in a convincing way.

He's INCREDIBLY arrogant, and believes himself to be a genius and superior other dwarves. He believes that he's destined for greatness and deserves incredible accommodations. He hates it when someone else is in a better position then him and forms major grudges and enacts revenge over petty things. He also gets incredibly frustrated when things don't go his way. And most of all he is He's UNBELIEVABLY power hungry.

Congrats on the dragon, if you go to butchers shop and tell them to butcher dead animal it should work unless you took too long and he rotted.

Your dwarf seems rather... unstable. Wonder if it is power going to his head or simply he is nutz on his own.

THEY KEEP GOING ON ABOUT A CREATURE OCCUPING THE SITE EVEN THOUGH THE ONLY CREATURE ON THE SITE ARE THE DWARVES TRYING TO CONSTRUCT IT! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!

I wonder if your dwarf realizes that my dwarf was the one who pulled us out from a Tantrum Spiral(kind of). I wouldn't call that incompetence^^. And animal trap? Useless, Artifact animal traps are bugged so they cannot contain animals, just like artifact cages.

And Yeah it's a common bug, you have to remove construction order and place it again for it to go away.

Not really that sad, it's DF after all, things are supposed to escalate quickly adn disapointments are pretty much part of the game. Like on my last stream. "The Dead are walking!" WOOO. Wait, only two zombies? Owwww.T.T

I wonder if Blademan will pay off part of the debt?^^

(I put it in there because of it's insane value, not to trap animals.)

Overseer journal 25th Sandstone, 139: Ustuth Sedilrigoth has been taken by a fey mood. I wonder what he'll make.
26th Sandstone, 139: I have found the fortress artefact throne. It was in the office of that greedy bastard Exodius1. I've ordered it to be put in my office.
27th Sandstone, 139: I have decided to try and put as many artifacts in my room as possible, as I am the only one worthy of them.
4th Timber, 139: I know have four artefacts in my rooms, one in each, I must say my rooms are working out quite well.
(Also, how much money have we paid off so far?) (Also I have a huge number of coins but how do I find them and move them to the depot?)
19th Timber, 139: A caravan has arrived!
20th Timber, 139: Ustuth Sedilrigoth has completed his artefact, unfortunately it's only a lousy flute.
1st Moonstone, 139: Bought some alcohol. Also bought some gold, platinum and some lovely electrum for statues to put in my rooms.

You have to search for it manually in the All tab, or just use the search option.

After my turn we had 46k left of coins (not value wise, quantity wise) no idea about Red's.

Overseer journal 13th Moonstone, 139: I've started giving away coins to the King. I've traded 6,500 so far. It's only thanks to my genius that we are able to sort out this unfortunate situation that that idiot Exodius1 left us in!
14th Moonstone, 139: Finished my glorious horizontal statue of my face in the statue room. Dwarves will gaze upon it and remember my glory! (http://i.imgur.com/gBi8NA2.png)

Overseer journal 11th Opal, 139: UNBELIEVABLE, AGAIN SOMEONE TAKES MY MAYOR POSITION! Stodir Ragigoth, YOU WILL PAY! I've also found out the reason why I temporarily losing my position as mayor of this fortress. It's because the other dwarves keep voting me out. I can't believe this, that they are so stupid that they fail to recognise my genius and vote in someone else, this calls for a collective punishment! Everyone is to lose their chests and cabinets, and they are to be put in the room of someone more severing like me! Why were they given them in the first place, dwarves like these are only merely worthy of basic rooms! Finally it's DEATH BY MAGMA for Stodir ragigoth!
28th Obsidian, 139: I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS! I'M LOSING MY POSITION AS OVERSEER! Something about "tradition" and "collecting to much wealth" and "suspicious deaths" how is this fortress to survive without my guidance. Under my guidance the fort fought of a dragon, made enough coins to pay off our debt, created great works of art, took incompetent fools away from positions of power and tripled our trap based defences. HOW CAN THEY POSSIBLY KICK OUT SOMEONE WITH MY GENIUS! AAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
(I'll post soon. Just need the read through it, I'm been having problems with the internet in my new home and have been having to go to the cricket club to use the internet, my dad's having a I.T. guy come over tomorrow to sort out the problem)(EDIT: And the uploading service for media fire is down... will post as soon as possible)

The end of the uneventful reign of the lazyexecutioner.
The fortress is still pretty stocked on food and drink and shiny stuff.
The military have just pretty much polished their weaponry.
There may be a ton of furniture may have been my doing.
And enough coins to fill the pyramids with.
If you see the blood stains around convenient little holes dont ask.
Oh and Moleman is pretty much refusing to walk as of now so i dont think he will last much longer and sorry Bsnott im really not sure as to why you were recommend to EXECUTION. Pretty sure my rule was not that harsh.

[spoiler]

Date: ??/Granite/141

Well here we go....Another try at getting me killed. Why do they always want to kill me?I am handsome, rich, powerful and....About to get much richer!!!
The fools thought they could force me to work?At a fortress?Where the dwarves probably only eat mushrooms?Well I say let them!
My plan is simple!Try and double the worth of the fortress!!!Or even triple it!!!How does one do that with a pile of stone and dwarves???
Easy!So easy!Create loads and loads of rooms. And smooth them and engrave them!!!Make every one stinking dwarve (except farmers etc...Duh noone wants to die) a stone worker.Couldnt be simpler!!!Also by making a great chamber for myself....(I told the dwarves its going to be for the King or whatever...And they bought it!)

So time to get started
And the evil part >:D....Let the former overseers join in the engraving!!!Its for efficiency of course...The faster the better.Every dwarve makes a difference.Well except me.I know absolutely nothing about stone so I would be of no use.Yes its better for my to watch and order them about!!!

(Note to self:Selecting the entire map for smoothing doesnt work very well and results in a really bad lagspike....)
Artistic sketches:

http://prntscr.com/1suuqz        -Some of the engraving recruits :D

----------------------
Sorry my dear dwarves but I hope to write more but suddenly everything got frozen when I issued the command about smoothing!!!I feel evil powers are at work!!!
(Sorry but cant post anymore because of the lagspike....I might have to go back to the previous save if it doesnt unlag?.Until then I'm posting this)
----------------------
Its a miracle!!!I can move again! And issue commands again!
What a tantrum!!!In my fortress?!
http://prntscr.com/1suwpw   -Some dwarves dont take kindly to a change of job? :D

And in case you kind folks are wondering:
http://prntscr.com/1suy92    -My chambers in progress. The room at the very top of the sketch is going to be my burial site. The halls will have pillars as you can see in my beautiful masterpiece of a sketch.

Note to self:DONT EVERY SELECT THE WHOLE MAP FOR SMOOTHING.Thats right loads of lag now and stuff but once they the dwarves are finished it will probably be all great.....I hope...
-------------
Now what kind of leader only cares for himself???Not me ofcourse!
Im creating a great housing project to house all the dwarves that will come here in the future! Two x one sized rooms!!!Thats right!!!Smoothed floors and walls!!!Great stone doors...And best of all...Great wooden beds!!!Isnt it great?!?!

Note to self: Stop overusing question and exclaimation marks. And stop waving your hands around while you read this to yourself. Its not these people will see and hear this great speech....Its just another crummy diary journal.

(Edit:Everything unfroze....5 secs after I posted...Ugh do i hate dwarf fortress for this)

Journal entry 18th Granite 141

Its another miracle!!!I actually managed to get them ALL working. How many people can achieve that?I have no idea...

http://prntscr.com/1t1gkw

The only person whos not working is me...Well I am in a way.Im ordering everyone around!!!
Also I decided to give myself a decend job:
http://prntscr.com/1t1hhz
That suits me...Ofcourse its just for the tittle and to be part of the nobilty but you nevermind that.
----------------------------------
Oh well I am really sorry to say this but someone went insane.I know it wouldnt be of great interest but...saddly...it was...one of the Moleman guys....
http://prntscr.com/1t1mrx
Now I swear this time I had nothing to do with it.I dont even know how he did go berserk.I'm just hoping he wont kill to many :/
----------------------------------
Also I swear I dont know how this happened to him:
http://prntscr.com/1t1o97

But I think he might be stuck in that tower thingy outside?
Oh another sad thing is his body will most likely rot up there when he dies from dehydration or something so I'll just make him a slab when he dies...

Journal entry
-------------
Well its all the same. All the time. The lazy dwarfs seem not to want to work on smoothing the fortress.I think the humans call this 'lag'.

Anyways I had started minting coins.I don't know why.I don't even know how they work but I think I'm doing something useful for the future of this fortress....and my wallet! Now I need plantinium doors for the vaults inside my living spaces.
(My turn might take some time because smoothing the entire fortress all at once does not have good impacts on performance).

I don't think I will be able to finish my turn as I won't have my PC for quite a while.I will know tomorrow for sure.
