General Discussion / Survey on communication in MMORPG's.
« on: June 29, 2023, 04:50:45 pm »
Hello, I'm working on a university BA dissertation titled "Analysis of Communication in MMORPG videogames", and part of that work involves using research tools to collect data relevant to the subject.
I come to you with a survey in order to ask: How do you communicate in MMORPG's? This survey is split into two parts: Part 1 is mostly demographics related to age, gender and country of origin, Part 2 is dedicated to chat in MMORPG's, voice chat as well as the concept of Guilds. No personally identifiable data is collected or stored. If you are a gamer who plays MMORPG's, feel free to fill out the survey, your effort will be greatly appreciated.

SURVEY (Google Forms): https://forms.gle/cFktrS3cBcBKbuCKA

Let me know if there are any difficulties with the survey or if you have any feedback to share.

I'd also like to take the time to ask: what forums are good for collecting survey data? I'd like to rely on more than just Bay 12.

Life Advice / Can I post links to surveys here?

Subject message says it all. I am not sure of Bay 12 Forums' stance on surveys, and I prefer to ask before posting one.

Greetings! I once again come asking for advice. Today I have noticed that my gaming laptop's monitor (the same item) has yet another defect. In this case, it's a greyish discolouration on the lower left corner of my monitor. This discolouration isn't visible on any intensely coloured background, however it is noticeable on black. What is the cause of the problem, and how do I fix it?
Worth noting is that the discolouration disappears when I press the edge where it is on slightly.

And to answer the previous post about the whirring sound: it turns out that the cooling system was defective, so it was replaced.

Greetings! Just shy of a month ago, I've bought a MSI Katana GF66 with a RTX 3060, as it had decent specifications for its price tag. However, yesterday I have noticed that when I am running games, the laptop started emitting a whirring noise from its left side. Said noises are accompanied by slight vibration, felt whenether I touch the keyboard. What is the cause of this? What are the solutions to it?

Other Games / What is currently happening in EVE: Online?
« on: April 24, 2021, 08:29:45 pm »
Hello, ladies and gentlemen. I come here to ask you a question.

Every-so-often, I check on Sov Maps to see the territorial status of EVE's nullspace. The southwestern corner of nullspace was occupied by the Imperium alliance, with its capital in the constellation of Delve (to my knowledge). That was a few months ago. Imperium, from what I saw, was pushed away from its perimeter constellations by Legacy, led by Test Alliance Please Ignore, and Legacy was pouring into Delve. I've decided to check Sov Maps again, to see how the situation evolved.

The Imperium was mostly wiped off the map, with a few exclaves located in the constellations Tenerifis and Impass, and one system located in the constellation of Fountain.

I must ask then: what happened? Can someone from the Bay 12 community enlighten me with a recap on the entire war, and what had transpired into the current situation? I've tried to read articles on Eve News and INN, but Eve News was a confusing read, while INN seemed like propaganda, and I'd rather avoid propaganda untill I have a reaible sight on the greater picture.

Other Games / A problem with ESO, or rather one of its products.
« on: April 08, 2021, 07:45:31 am »
As always, I am unsure whenether or not I chose the correct subforum. If my subforum choice was wrong, do tell me in replies!

Good day, gentlemen. I come here in search of advice. A few days ago, I have decided to purchase the game Elder Scrolls: Online, since it is on a discount and I've decided to extend the free week until eternity (or when the servers inveitably shut down 10 years into the future). Alongside the Greymoor edition, I've also purchased the Newcomer Pack since I planned to purchase the Any Race, Any Alliance bundle. The contents of the pack are as follows:

- 1500 Crowns
- A pet. Fire Salamander methinks.
- Some consumables.

Unfortunately, the milisecond I logged into the game, I've noticed that the 1500 Crowns were not, in fact, trasnferred to my account (although the other items were included). Sent a notice to Support as soon as I've noticed, and they gave me generic advice: Check if the payment was indeed made, reload the game and wait 2 days for processing. I did all of that (I paid for the game and the pack in a single transaction) but Crowns were still missing, so I've provided the info they asked for. A few hours later one of the Support employees contacted me in a reply. Said employee assumed I missed ESO Plus coins, and scanned for said coins. He found nothing, and asked for a proof of purchase. I provided the info to the best of my ability, I included the transaction receipt, my SteamId and the product name (I put Newcomers Pack in, but I considered putting the $0 1500 Coin Pack sub-transaction instead). I also put myself in the "idendity of the purchaser" field despite having no idea what that means. I sent them a reply with said info, and with correction saying that I was missing 1500 Newcomers Pack Crowns, not ESO Plus Crowns. This happened 2 days ago.

I've yet to receive a response.

What am I supposed to do with such a conondrum? I admit, this is the first time in some time since I had to deal with support, and the first time in a very long while to deal with a inefficient support service. I simply am not prepared for this.

Life Advice / Computer detects headphones as speakers.
« on: March 11, 2021, 05:07:01 pm »
Good day, ladies and gentlemen, I come to you with a problem. When connecting my headphones (CORSAIR HS45 SURROUND) directly to a headphone jack in my computer, my device reads my headphones as Speakers functioning on Realtek. This, sadly, results in microphone not functioning when needed. What causes this problem, and are there any fixes outside of sending either the headphones or the computer to repairs? USB converter solves the issue, however I would still like to use the headphone jack directly.

Other Games / What happened to Age of Fable (the web game)?
« on: October 08, 2020, 05:07:20 pm »
Good day, gentlemen. I hope that I have not interrupted your activities.

I have come to ask the following question: What has happened to the text webgame known as Age of Fable, which was released for free back in 2006? It's domain (www.ageoffable.net) returns an error message stating that the domain in question does not exist.  I found the game to be quite enjoyable, and I would be greatly saddened if it would become permanently unavailable.

Life Advice / Computer only detects 50% of available RAM.
« on: September 14, 2020, 05:08:13 pm »
Good day, ladies and gentlemen. I seek advice on computer maintenance and repair. Today, I have discovered that out of 8 GB of RAM that I currently have at disposal, my computer detects (and by consequence utilizes) only half of that. If my memory is correct, utilizing the memory repair tool included within Windows 10 showed no errors but that was some time ago. What could cause my computer to detect only half of my RAM and what are potential solutions to this problem?

If an given solution requires funds to commence, I would like to know the exact amount of funds required to fully commence an given solution beforehand. I can spare no more than ~$250 converted into PLN currency.

For those who don't understand the above message written in bold: If an solution requires money to do, I'd like to know the price first.

Post intial edition: Not sure if I should ask this question under The Generic Computer Advice Thread megapost. Time shall be the judge here.

Other Games / Question for an obscure MUD: After the Plague.
« on: June 22, 2020, 04:39:05 pm »
Good evening! As I've been playing an mostly abandoned MUD called After the Plague, and since I haven't seen a fellow soul logged on for a while, I come to ask: Where do I find guildhalls for the following guilds?:

Alchemist
Barbarian
Bard
Sohei
Bodyartist
Samurai
Enchanter
Necromancer
Priest of Themes
Silent Shadows

While precise directions from the  Elements' City (the place where you start the game) would be the best, I am also willing to accept pointers towards the place in question. If access to guildhall is blocked due to an quest, an walkthough must be supplied, if possible and if applicable within guidelines and rules.

If I receive no answers here, that is fine. I will ask the same question on r/mud, an subreddit dedicated to MUD's.

I wish you a good day.
It is uncertain whenether or not this is the correct forum. I'll be damned more if I don't muster the courage to ask though, so here goes nothing.

An secondary question: If I change religions in game, will I be able to return to the religion I changed from? (Example: If I swtich from Mielikki to Themes, will I be able to switch from Themes to Mielikki and vice versa?)

Other Games / What happened to Tales of Illyria?
« on: May 10, 2020, 05:32:57 pm »
Hello! Some time ago (2016, methinks), I bought a mobile game: Tales of Illyria, an combination of an text game, RPG and Oregon Trail. It was a good game, with no microtransactions (until Tales of Illyria 3, that is), unpolished, with decent gameplay, not too-shabby graphics and lots of text adventures (and I love text adventures, especially when you have gameplay mechanics). The game had 3 parts, all priced around $10, I think. My friend (yes, I apprently have friends, what a suprise) also liked the series, and wanted to return to them but alas, he couldn't find them on Google Play no more. Even my game library doesn't register them, and I don't recall ever deleting them from the library. The question is: What happened to Tales of Illyria, and where can I find it, if I can at all?

I also planned a scout post regarding a certain game that released a month ago, but now it's too late to do anything so why bother?

I'm quite possibly posting this on an incorrect forum, but oh well. Fortune favours the bold, one wise man said.

Good day, I have a few questions regarding the multiplayer module of Red Dead Redemption II, commonly known as Red Dead Online, or as it's acronym: RDO. Here are the questions:
I: Is it possible to have more than one character on a given account?
I know that in Grand Theft Auto Online, you could have more than 1 character (although this function was well hidden in the menus). I want to know if it is implemented or is in some way accesible in Red Dead Online.
II: If there is no way to have more than 1 character on an single account, then do the perks and benefits from owning the Ultimate Edition carry over to the next character?
Yes, I do own the Ultimate Edition of the game, and it does have some benefits. But I have no idea if they'll stay, should I delete my existing character and create an new one. I plan on doing so depending on whatever the answer to question I is. I know that the Battle Pass progress does not carry over, but unused gold or dollars do carry over. Everything else is an mystery for me.

Hopefully I'll get my answers soon. Have a nice day, folks.

Other Games / Seeking a good MUD to play, again.
« on: June 09, 2019, 04:50:25 pm »
Good morning/afternoon/evening/night whatever is your time. I once again have came to a problem with finding a good unique MUD/MOO to play on. As such, I ask the Bay 12 Forums community again for any good MUD reccomendations. Again because my last thread died off and it was posted a long time ago.

Of course, I won't be seeking any random MUD, because some opportunists will try to reccomend me their MUDs (as a form of advertisement), hereby I have set up a few criterias which I will use to determine if a given MUD lies in my sphere of interest. Without further ado:

1: A MUD should have unique mechanics and gameplay.
This means that the mud should be engaging and offer someting unique mechanically and gameplay-wise. No stock mechanics, no stock areas and most importantly: No stock classes. I am fine if there is a guild/clan system that works like the class system except joinable in-game. Unique classes, say wightknight instead of the anti-paladin or Paragonian Knight instead of the stock warrior also work, as well as multi-classing. Even stock classes made in a non-stock style are also acceptable. A class-less system is also fine, provided there is some sort of a archetype which I can look into when I tailor my own unique "class".  I've grown tired of the sea of MUDs offering the same generic "warrior rogue mage cleric" style, with the occasional "druid, necromancer, ranger, monk" classes thrown in.
Examples of unique-mechaniced MUDs include: Lost Souls (limb based health system, energies instead of mana, super-original guilds) Dune (Unique guilds with very unique mechanics, one of them got a rework) 3-Kingdoms/3-Scapes (Unique guilds, mechanics and even advancement systems and mana types (or guildpoints, as they're called))

2: A MUD should not offer an ability to purchase advantages with real-life money.
A topic of tension and controversy for the past year, microtransactions don't just plague only the big AAA games, they also affect the much older and smaller MUDs. These MUDs provide you with an ability to purchase perks or privileges that free players cannot obtain. This course of action is justified by "donations" and "rewarding donors", but this justification is so commonplace that it's no longer effective. Pepole should primarly donate because they like the game and they want to support their development, not because they can gain an advantage by doing so.
Monthly/quarterly/half-yearly/yearly subscription purchase also counts for "purchasing advantage" because if there is a free-to-play system and there is a subscription system, then the subscribers get advantages that the free players do not.
Examples of muds with the ability to purchase advantages include: Lost Souls (you can purchase guild slots, wild talents (psionics, as it is called there) and even exclusive races (such as shoggothim and pure dragons)) 3-Kingdoms/3-Scapes (you can buy special VAF perks, such as an additional guild slot. 1 guildslot = 200 VAF.  1 VAF = 1$ = ~4 ZŁ) Avalon (1989) (a recent addition, Avalon has turned from a sponsorship/optional subscription system to credited/"optional" subscription system. Being a credited (free) player means your progress is, from what I've read from the website, almost fully based upon crown purchase and crown conversion. And crowns are purchaseable with real money. Subscriptions give you lessons and free crowns, so yeah, do make up your own conclusion.)

3: A MUD should have a friendly and tolerant staffbase and playerbase.
The title is self-explanatiory, but I will describe it here. Even the best muds on the world can be spoiled and ruined if the elite, high level players see new players as undesirables and cannot understand their initial newbie stupidity being a part of the newbie learning process. Or otherwise act in a negative way towards those new and diffrent. No MUD can be called a good one as long as elitism runs rampant there. This includes the staff - it is also no good if the staff running the game are isolated from the community, reacting at any intrusion with arrogance and anger, in rare cases even issuing staff punishments for the audacity to disrupt their work in an effort to learn the game or address a problem unfixable otherwise. I myself have been the victim of communal elitism and staffer isolationism (mostly in the year 2015) and such experiences have made me much more distant towards a fellow person and more humble as well, and I worked hard on changing my own personality to avoid such incidents in the future, short and far.
For security reasons, I will not list out muds with suspected elitist problems, although if you, like me, are a veteran MUD drifter, who jumps from mud to mud you may actually know which muds I'm talking about.

4: A MUD should not forbid players from sharing walkthroughs to areas, quests and tasks.
That means that "qinfo", walkthroughs and other info should be freely accesible and shareable with others, to help them progress or catch up with their friends. It also means a MUD is open to those pepole who, for some reason cannot do quests due to mental conditions (myself being a part of this group). A mud who forbids or limits sharing "qinfo" or similar information, be it through internal or external communication is not open to those "special" pepole who simply cannot mentally do the task of completing even the simplest quests. I get it - this is a part of gameplay and makes up for the experience one enjoys while playing the game, I also get it that it also serves as a tool to keep the player engaged, but this is infuriating for some pepole and an a progress throttle for some diffrent pepole, in rare cases even a progress obstacle that cannot be overcome.
Examples of such muds include: 3-Scapes, Nanavent and Midnight Sun II.

5: A MUD should not tie progress and accesibility to roleplay, or enforce it in any way.
MUDs, being games that are text based, have a very strong roleplay potential that cannot be reproduced in 3D or even 2D games. This potential is sometimes used by games to advance the plot, make intrigue and generally create an unique atmosphere that is rememberable and enjoyable by all in the game. The downside to roleplay is that it is very slow paced, and if a mud ties progress to roleplay, then the already slow progress is slowed even more to unbearable levels. Some MUD's also enforce roleplay as well, which means that you have to act, or else. If a mud has it's progress or accesibility to guilds, clans and such tied to roleplay (usually that of a enforced kind), then you can't join that guild until, for example:
You start fufilling mechanical requirements, such as say... 17 wisdom for priests.
You have a written history. It can be a short one or a big one, but it must be logical and manually approved, which takes time.
You need to be already established in the in game roleplayscape, which means roleplay for a long time, usually a few months.
You need to roleplay joining a guild, that is establishing contact with recruiters, writing an interview letter, having an interview with the recruiter or the head of the guild. This process, especially the initial establishing contact phase, takes a very long time - usually a year, but there are rumours that this takes even longer, and even then, you may be rejected, which means roleplaying and mechanical adjustments and later repeating the sequence I described above, still with no guarantee..
Advancement within a approved guild takes less time, but it is still comparatively long.
Me, as a person with a low degree of patience, and a low tolerance of failure of any kind usually find it frustuating when you have to roleplay for over a year before you join your favourite guild and infuriating when you find out that your application was rejected just because you screwed up your history because you didn't knew the game lore. Therefore I usually avoid those games, as I want to play and have fun, and I'm not having fun when I find my progress throttled by roleplay.
Just to make it clear - I have nothing against roleplay in itself, it can be fun and it can also be enjoyable, so long as it is optional and so long as it is not tied to progress and does not impair or reduce accesibility to guilds, quests, locations etc.
Examples of such muds include: all RPI muds (such as Armageddon), all MUXes, all MUSHes, some MOOs, The Inquisition: Legacy, Threshold RPG, DragonRealms, Gemstone IV, Geas, Dark & Shattered Lands and New Worlds Ateraan.

All suggestions which are not blatant ads will be considered and judged based upon the 5 criteria I described, in detail, above. I understand this is a very long wall of text (it took 2 hours to write this), but I wanted to describe each criteria in detail as to not to cause ambiguity and confusion amongst the publicity. I hope to hear some answers soon. I wish you all a good day.

Other Games / Seeking a good MUD to play.
« on: June 09, 2018, 01:07:49 pm »
Hello! I am currently seeking a MUD to play, as the ones I currently play have became somewhat boring. Here are a few guidelines to follow what MUDS I seek:
1: No stock mechanics - Quite simple and straightforward. Stock mechanics are quite boring and muds which posses non-stock and unique mechanics are much more better than non-unique. Examples: limb health system (used in Lost Souls, Stillborn, Accursed Lands, Dartmud and to some extent in Elephant MUD and Cthulhu MUD), Dwarf Fortress-esque health system (used in Stillborn and Harshworlds), multiclassing or class-less system (used in Alter Aeon, DartMUD, Accursed Lands, Roleplay Intensive MUDs and all MUDs that replace classes with guilds (such as 3Kingdoms or Dune)) and intersting guilds that determine the character's build, provide guild-specific helpfiles and changes the prompt in combat (or sometimes outside of it, used in 3Kingdoms, 3Scapes, CLOK (-prompt and helpfiles), Lost Souls (-prompt) and Dune)
2: Friendly playerbase and staff - Events from mostly 2014 and 2015 has caused me to look for MUDs that are more newbie-friendly on the social side, which also include staff/wizards/immortals/whoever maintains and creates content on a given MUD. I have a rather poor tolerance for intolerant pepole, and usualy leave a MUD for some time once first signs of hate have been noticed in the community against my person.
3: Easy access to guilds in guild-based MUDs - I am a person that wants to hop in a guild, test it for a while and then either stay or leave and test another one (a practice known as guildhopping). Muds which require roleplay to join a guild and further roleplay to advance in it usually require you to possess a sufficient amount of game knowledge to even be considered as a possible applicant (and this "lore collection" takes about a few months or a year, depends on the MUD), and after waiting (usually) a month or so, get potentially rejected. Applications are usually submitted in the form of an essay or a motivational letter which take around a hour to write. Advancements are even longer, potentially requiring an entire lifetime to get to the best and most powerfull skills a guild has to offer. For this reason alone, I avoid playing those muds, as I want to be an PLAYER, not an ACTOR. Examples: Xyllomer, Geas and Genesis
4: No roleplay enforced MUDs - Pretty straightforward, I understand players play to become one with their character, disconnect from the real world and enter the fantasy world their character lives in. Some enjoy roleplay, I do not as I would like to play and explore the game's mechanics, combat and crafting systems, not to study game lore (which Ill quickly forget) and think about what I will say next without attracting unwanted staff attention. Examples: Roleplay Intensive MUDs, all MUSHes, all MUXes and some MOOs.
5: Easy access to information about the game's mechanics, information on how to join guilds and non-prohibited quest solution sharing. - I would love to know what is the most optimal build, how to join a guild, what are good newbie builds or most importantly - how do I complete quests? I can understand that the game doesn't want to reveal it's secrets, this encourages the player to actually discover the game mechanics on it's own. I can not understand however why some games cannot share quest solutions, and thus find quest info sharing prohibition to benridiculous. Examples: Lost Souls, 3Kingdoms, 3Scapes (prohibits quest info sharing) and HellMOO.

The above points are merely guidelines on what muds I seek. They are not hard-lined rules and thus you can recommend MUDS who do not follow one or few rules stated above.

All propositions are welcome!

Other Games / Where do I get Poschengband?
« on: May 02, 2018, 03:27:39 pm »
Greetings! I am seeking help with getting Poschengband (an fork of Chengband, which is an fork of Angband), one of my favourite -band forks. However, when I to get it from the supposed site: https://sites.google.com/site/poschengband/, it says that I have no permission. I have sent via a button there to whoever is giving permission but so far, I have not recieved it. This means that either my request has not arrived, has not yet been read or has been rejected. The github repository here: https://github.com/poschengband/poschengband, only contains the soruce code. As I have no knowledge on how to compile files, I need help with finding whatver site that contains an already compiled version of Poschengband. If none are available, please, tell me, so that I can cease seeking things that cannot be sought, and also what are potential forks that are compiled and are similar to Poschengband.
