Title: Vastaghen12 draws daily sometimes
Post by: vastaghen12 on August 15, 2017, 05:54:39 pm
I've been waiting to do this for a long time but spamming the general art thread feels no good.
Also Cinder has a thread for art  and I want mine too. :P

Expect a bunch of characters, lots of drawings of my avatar, shitty speed paints, and a bunch of architectural sketches.
Maybe even practice comic pages
--

Anyhow lets start... with another CDDA character, yay?

Must have webcomic...

Or even a guest strip in some other comic, that would be nice...

I might post practice layouts some days, nothing very elaborate most likely

Its from a request, that one.

But Sometimes when I lose my pants from a battle with zombies it takes me a few days to notice they are gone. I think that's what happened.

---

A Cataclysm DDA eyebot. Its actually part of a bigger thing, but I drew the eyebot first to have an idea of what I wanted it to look like.
I also tried to make it as un-fallout as I could, hence the asymmetrical flying cube:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Shame that freindly eyebots dont really do anything useful in game.

I greatly overestimate my free-time/productivity. On the flipside you get to see how my half-ways to finished sketches and coloring looks like.

Here's two drawings of my paladin character:

Ah, there's my pal Adin again. Nice to see 'er.

Glad you like them, that paladin is one of my favourite characters to draw.

I actually named her Aine. Which if I remember correctly means radiance in irish. Clever right?

Speaking of that its her again

This one could have used a bit more time for me to figure out how the 3 part skirt should drape, but I had little time, and missing two days in a row wont do.

Nice art. You should probably draw a webcomic because I love your style.

So many people call for a webcomic... honestly, I wouldn't wish writing, arting, and maintaining a webcomic on anyone (I have seen a TON of burnout), though I suppose if someone was actually paying for art for one it would be ok (and one would have to be established and doing commissions regularly before pretty much anyone would ask about such an arrangement anyway).

Regardless, just my 2 cents: don't get involved in a webcomic without a clear plan, for sure.

Yeah I havent started a comic because its a lot of work I honestly dont have time for right now. Nevermind that I have no idea of what  a story I would like to tell is.

Also, I'm not saying you have to draw a webcomic. I'm mostly saying that I love your art style and it's something that would be cool in a comic. I compliment people in weird ways :P

Webcomic...
Must have webcomic...
Weeeeebcomiiiic.
You should probably draw a webcomic
You need to write, do layouts, design characters, design and build a website, and depending on your goals and means, possibly manage a community and promote the site in order to fund the project. This is a job all on its own, especially if you can't afford to hire out some of these responsibilities, and it is by no means a small undertaking.

Though, Vast is an efficient and consistent artist with a distinct style, so I could see them being pretty successful at it if they were sufficiently prepared.

Or even a guest strip in some other comic, that would be nice...
How? Art trades are a device that are used to share audience exposure, but since Vast has a really quite small audience there isn't much to offer in return. I wouldn't expect an established webcomic artist to be very open to investing their time in that kind of thing, unless they already regularly featured other artists as a bit.

Here's a page of my sketchbook I drew today:

I used steadtler black liners for ink, sizes 0.3 and 0.8. Coloring is done with prismacolor markers. My advice when buying markers  would be to buy only the very faint tones.

Ooooh... who's that? The last character was a paladin, so supposedly this guy's a mage?

Its just some random doodle of a mage in this case. The only proper characters that I have is the paladin and the purple guy with the glaive, most of the other stuff I draw are one-offs.

Today's drawing is the mug of some sort of steampunk/retro robot

Here in Guatemala most art supply stores will sell individual markers that have more variety than the pre-made boxes you find online. So try checking your nearby stores

About that  adventure game?

Not really, I  know only that the main character was part of of an expedition searching for alien life in the oceans of Europa and that the mission goes to shit when the crew bring a dead lifeforms inside the base for study. My goal would have been something similar to Sphere mixed with The Color out of space.
I've been meaning to work on it a bit more.

I dont really have anything else. I've been just thinking of  a few possible settings.

Egan_BW is right here, the letters are not japanese, the sign originally read BAR but I didnt like the looks of my letters  and I just changed it to gibberish. Made them oriental-ish, because signs in chinese have a strong cyberpunk feel to them and Cataclysm DDA is arguably part of that genre.

Theres not much story to it, my avatar was the first survivor that was actually long and succesfull, and it happens that I had an apartment building as homebase, hence the whole balcony thing. In fact she wears the starting gear of the scoundrel profession, which was only one of the only professions back then, and whenever I paint her, the colors of a left 4 dead hunter.

Also I was beginning learning to draw around that time, so she became one of my first characters.

I want to improve the jumpsuit worn by the protagonist of the Europa colony game. Being fairly uncreative I just tried to combine it with the breastplate of Paladin Aine. Halfway through it I remembered seing the design somewhere, it was infact very similar to apiece of Fallout 4 concept art (http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/fallout/images/f/f0/Cryopod_abduction_scene.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20151229235355), so I just added the gas mask and copied the institute jumpsuit instead.

Theres also the logo of the mission there.

I like fort mode the most, that said I haven't played in a long while. Ever since I started studying architecture I think my forts look ugly, and designing them properly feels like a second job.

Adventurers don't get to have scabbards, they just tie swords to their bodies. :P

Hmm true. That or dwarven beard works like velcro.

This is pretty OK for what I'm assuming is a first attempt. You've pretty much got the idea with how to simplify shapes while still leaving your character recognizable.

First of all, amazing art. You and that bloke who draws the scientist's adventures (What was his name? He had a chibi artstyle I recall) are pretty much the stars of the Cataclysm DDA forums.
And about Hexogen, that's pretty good, but I feel the 'o' doesn't fit. I like DD's idea about making it a hex, but I feel Hexgen rolls off the tongue better.

Keep up the good work!

Hey, don't besmirch the good name of Hexagen™ Industries! Hexagen™ Industries has done a lot for this star system, and I won't have you talking bull-dung about "drug-addicted supersoldiers" and "giant underground labs filled with monsters" and "experiments that stretch the limits of science, morality, and basic logic". Not as much as I'd hope. My fantasy setting, well not that I actually have done worldbuilidng, is just mostly desert.  I'm not even sure of when I decided that. I think that that the first ever thing I drew about the setting was the masked mage. I then concluded he looked desert-y and from then on the setting is miles upon miles of sand.

Masked mage is actually the inception of the whole universe. Even how Aine looks is linked to him, her color theme is white and orange to contrast his purple and dark clothes, and she is a paladin because the masked mage is some of occult sorcerer.

I also like how desertic areas look. And I particularly like ruins from desertic places, just because they seem even more mysterious and tragic that ruins elsewhere.

Áine is an old Irish name meaning "Splendour, radiance, and brilliance."
The name is also connected with Fruitfullness and prosperity.
The Queen of the Munster faeries was named Áine, and is arguably where the name comes from.
I won't bug you to make a web omic, but if you did, I would read it to death.

A paladin's weapon of choice is usually a twohanded sword or hammer. Thankfully you don't tend to get Barbarian/Paladin hybrids, dual great weapons are bad enough without full plate armour and healing spells.

My artstile is not consistent enough.

Yes but it totally is tho. I've seen webcomics with much less consistant art, maybe you should give it a try
Also great art; I'd ask for a trade if I didn't know any better

I don't get the point of art trades. Isn't it just what it sounds like, two artists each sending the other a drawing?

Wow, that sword is massive. I love it!

Is the sword massive or is Aine really short? Perhaps we will never know.

Also great art; I'd ask for a trade if I didn't know any better

I would be happy to do so, but it would have to wait until after oct 18.

Been really busy, so this is what I could do in the few minutes I aside to draw. A diselpunk jetpack-shocktroop, or well, actually just the gun and the arm of one, The rest needed more time.

How the fuck do you fit so much detail in so little time.

A good idea of what you want to draw before you start helps lot. In this case I had already drawn the same jet pack guy in my sketchbook. So I just copied it into the computer.

Then some practice from those 15 minute speedpaints stuff did the rest.

Title: Re: Vastaghen12's daily drawing
Post by: Cathar on November 03, 2017, 01:02:31 am
They are very nice, but you sould never use black outlines, this is especially true around the weapons, as they don't blend and feel like they "break" the sprite. The best is to use a darker version of the material they outline if you're not looking to reduce the number of color, or the same color of the material's shadow.

Also note that outlines are usually also affected by highlights. This should improve the visuals I believe

The soviets made a real nice Mayan inspired playing card deck. One of my University teachers had an incomplete set of them that he bought when visiting russia some 5 years ago. So, maybe you could still find a incomplete set of them, or a re-print.

Or you can commission someone and then print them, haha.

Honestly, you're all manifestations of my solipsistic consciousness. Sorry to disappoint.

Altho solipsism is unfalsifiable, one can always ask how do you determine that your own consciousness is truely yours, as opposed as the manifestation of something else that isn't you. One could also ask you that within the framework of you being an all comprising entity, could you determine what is you and what isn't.

I'm in the other hand make the far more modest claim that once a waifu always a waifu

I should also state that Cathar is also a 2d waifu within my internal universe, which I do not claim to be the only universe because (mildly) bad things keep happening to me despite my generally positive outlook, suggesting the influence of an external, "real" universe over my mind.

My guess (good as anyone else's!) is less volume due to the colors interacting differently in Krita. I also tried Krita too, but I had the same feeling of unheimlishkeit, like something's off, but can't figure out what. Their Color adjustment is definitely not the same and gives very awkward results, and since it's the cornerstone of my style I kind of renounced until now... Maybe I should try again if they improved their software

Hmm... I just had the awesome idea of a webcomic with an evil magic sword (sapient and the villain maybe) in it, but whenever that sword is in the room everything else switches to a greyscale color scheme, but the sword stays it's malevolent shade of crimson.

One of the first webcomics I found Snarlbear, may not have art comparable to the Cucumber Quest, but I think it is also very good at using color to point out the mood. Also colors turn psychedelic whenever the protagonist gives in to rage, which I guess is similar to your idea.

Omg d'awwwwww. Look at the lil' guy so proud of himself!

EDIT: How horribly did he die at the hands of angels?

It went about as well as you would expect, Kobolds are really tiny and the first soldier I fought wrestled me and then cleaved me in half. When I returned with another adventurer, the same angel clobbered me to death with the corpse.

Woo! I did a smart!

Out of curiosity, do you have any ideas about what the masked mage can do?

I dont really know, but lets say:

In the beginning, The Maker left the stewardship of creation to twelve wise men, convinced they would preserve it and guide it to prosperity. He was mistaken.

Masked mage is one of these twelve.

And now I'm doubly curious about Masked Mage, though a name of sorts probably is required at some point. He probably had a name, but has abandoned it over time due to its under use. Hmm... while short and generic, do you think Mask could work? Or maybe Maskician if you're into wordplay.

I've never been so tempted to write about characters I've only seen depicted in drawings. Good job, your art really brings them to life.

If you ever want an interesting name for a character, Conall is an Irish name meaning wolf. Colm, on the other hand, means pigeon, dove, and scar. Yes, the Irish for a scarred pigeon is Colm Colmnach.

Hmmm...
Vastaghen, do you prefer magic systems where the rules are clear-ish, specific and/or defined (I'll call this Hard magic for convenience ((think Harry Potter or Avatar)) or mystical, mysterious, unperdictable, and/or unexplored (Soft magic (Think LoTR))
Title: Re: Vastaghen12's daily drawing
Post by: Egan_BW on February 11, 2018, 06:29:59 pm
I tend to like magic with fairly self-consistent rules, but that can still be violently unpredictable when you mess something up. It's nice to have a good picture of how the metaphysics fits together, but it would also be a shame if something so powerful were also perfectly predictable.
Title: Re: Vastaghen12's daily drawing
Post by: vastaghen12 on February 11, 2018, 10:51:44 pm
I dont really like the idea of rigid-rule magic, feel it makes it to much like technology and thus boring, I do think that having some limits on what magic can achieve is a good idea.

I particularily dislike when magic is something that can be taught like mathematics  or some variant of science.  I prefer it when magic is akin to an art or an attainable through some sort of spiritual enlightenment, that way learning it is not just a matter of reading some good books.
Title: Re: Vastaghen12's daily drawing
Post by: Egan_BW on February 11, 2018, 11:32:56 pm
Technology is indistinguishable from magic, and isn't boring. Knowing how it all works just gives me greater appreciation for the amazing wizard magic we have now. If magic were real, you would teach it as a science. (Or alternatively, it is and we do.)
Title: Re: Vastaghen12's daily drawing
Post by: Imic on February 12, 2018, 02:02:32 am
I prefer to make magic subtle, and veryunpredictable. Want to appear somewhere else? No flash, no bang, you're just there. There are no colours no explosions, it just happens. Any rules that might exist are kept a secret from the audience, and the entire system is shown to be unpredictable, and with a mind if it's own.
This has often led to gods of magic who control every aspect of it's existence, decideing when something will work, and when it really, really won't.
That's my thought on the matter.
Title: Re: Vastaghen12's daily drawing
Post by: Rose on February 12, 2018, 02:20:27 am
I lean in the opposite direction.

I agree with Brandon Sanderson, who says that the rules of magic need to be understood enough by the reader that they can make informed guesses about what it's capable of, otherwise it's just deus ex machina
Title: Re: Vastaghen12's daily drawing
Post by: Derpy Dev on February 12, 2018, 02:29:53 am
First: Love Brandon Sanderson.

Second: I like magic with rules, but preferably with rules that differ per individual. So many different people each have a different variant of a base fire magic. Magic that changes so that everyone can use it differently and uniquely.

...kinda like super powers now that I say it out loud.
Title: Re: Vastaghen12's daily drawing
Post by: Cathar on February 12, 2018, 02:45:12 am
I think it's not incompatible tho ; in folktales lore, especially in celtic and nordic ones, magic can do a lot of things. Details needs not really to be explained - like, how do the dwarves craft the chain to hold Fenrir ? Who cares really, the important thing is we know they can, so magic conserves its aura of mysticism while the story keeps its consistancy.

In the folktales of my region, magic (fairies etc) can do a LOT of things, and the stories are precisely based on the fact the protagonist don't know the rules. Ex : the story of the little fey shoemaker, who comes naked at night at the home of an old shoemaker to do his work for him, until the shoemaker wife tries to dress him with handmade little clothes. The fey gets very offended and leaves, never to be seen again. In this case the undefined nature of the fey is what makes the story.

It really becomes a very obnoxious deus ex machina when the protagonist knows something the reader doesn't, and withold the knowledge from him. It's like Sherlock Holmes starting to use clues the readers didn't had access to ; it feels like cheating

It's just my opinion tho

You mean the G11: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_%26_Koch_G11

It's a prototype assault rifle that uses caseless ammo. Of course because it's a prototype it has this kind of allure to it (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SuperPrototype). I can see why you made the mistake of calling it a railgun because it's ammo looks like sabot (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f0/4.73x33_Caseless-crop.jpg). Of course, it still uses propellant just like any other firearm, so it's not a railgun, although Fortune's railgun (https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/metalgear/images/6/61/Rail.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20081104121413) from MGS2 may have been inspired by the weapon's design.

I don't know a lot about the gun itself, but caseless ammo as a concept has issues, among them heat dissipation (the heat from a gunshot that would normally be stored in casings that are expelled instead goes right into the weapon which causes malfunction), that prevent these kinds of weapons from seeing widespread use, hence why the weapon is so rare.
Title: Re: Vastaghen12's daily drawing
Post by: vastaghen12 on February 28, 2018, 10:25:48 am
No the G80 is a fictional in game weapon (http://cdda.chezzo.com/hk_g80), and a proper sci-fi railgun. Its just so rare you could probably play for years without finding it.

The G11 is also in the game though, or at least in some mod, because I think I have found those too.

Usually drawing is learned by repeatedly doing 20 sketches a day for years and years

YouTube and draw a cube mostly, you just have to be disciplined and draw daily.

Your first sketches are always shit. My first two sketchbooks I burned because they were too awful to exist.

Well, in my case, all the sketches are shit, and they never get any better.
Drawing for the sake of drawing something good is just too much work for too little reward imo

Draw because you enjoy drawing, instead. Don't worry if you're bad at it. Eventually you'll get half-decent st least, or you'd die of old age and thus no longer exist to want to be better at drawing.

It wouldn't make you be a good artist, but it'd make it less of a pain.

Like... nobody plays videogames solely because they want to be good at videogames.

I don't think I'm a tryhard... but I do deliberately seek out the hardest games possible and play them and love it when I can tell I've gotten better.
I guess in a way that makes me a tryhard that only tries to make themself impressed with their gaming skill.

Title: Re: Vastaghen12 draws daily again
Post by: vastaghen12 on December 02, 2018, 12:27:12 am
but how tall is pilot?

Tall and lanky, from growing in zero g and weak artificial gravity. I guess she's around 1.85m - 1.90m.

So she can definitely ride the space mountain.

Headcanon Aine is like six foot, no worries.

Shes more like  1.50-1.55m tall (So 5 foot tall).  Masked mage is  close to being 2.00m tall, around 6'6".

I've just realized that most of the drawings I have of them interacting are mostly just rough sketches in my sketchbooks, guess I'll fix that soon enough.

That background is sick. I love how you do your colors. Wish I could do something like that

Thank you!
I mostly use other paintings that I like to get the color palettes. These ones come from this sweet futurist painting called  "Before the parachute opens" by Tullio Crali.

Imo its not that hard, just pick a limited palette and force yourself to use it. An overlay layer at the end will also do wonders to bring "unity" to all your colors.

Every time you draw that character I'm reminded that CDDA is a good game that's just a little bit too tedious for me.

I get into making a character, pick a start that'll be immediately entertaining in some way, then play till I die or run out of time for gaming. If I survived I never load up the save again...

Nothing like seriously using a broken sword to make you look desperate and/or fucking pissed off.

Of course, Darkest Dungeons taught me that a greatsword with the tip broken off will pretty much oneshot everything, so I'm pretty scared of Aine right now. She's even got some sort of enchantment on the thing.

Certainly looks smaller than a greatsword which in turn is smaller than "big anime sword". Not that it isn't still a formidable weapon, longswords are easier to block with among other advantages.

Illustrated games are so rare these days ;-;

Post by: candlebury on August 26, 2022, 10:42:41 pm
Well MSPA forums died and that was like the place for them.

And the SPAM format seems like it'd nicely focus what I should draw, just 3-4 options that can share most of the art, instead of potentially having to draw anything.

Would probably run it on webtoons to get some better exposure, It might even feel vanguardist to the public there haha.

Haspen I know you read this share your wisdom please.

Make up four stats, then ask RNG for numbers, and base events and resolution to events on that and player choices.

Keep the story coherent so the players think you have everything planned. Rinse and repeat for few months until you get bored of the setting :P

You have to type in the url as http rather than as https. And it can't be imgur for arcane reasons, times out the page when you try. A different image host should work. I have postimages on my bookmarks, dunno if they're evil or something.

Well, it explodes and kills you if it gets too hot, so he has good reason to be scared of it.
