so I checked out my legends for any sign of a vault and filtering it down to just the keyword vault made nothing appear. am I just putting wrong filter in to find vaults or does this world have none?
[EDIT] so I have found several vaults by inputting names and finding demons but now im unsure where to find the location of these vaults as they do not say

What's the number of demons, do you have any demons who started goblin civs?
Do you have necromancers? Try hitting p on the first screen (export sites and pops) and search that file with whichever text editor you normally use.
-
Use Legends Viewer because there you can search for specific sites which are shown on the map.
Makes finding vaults easy.
Personally I don't use this mechanism as I think of it as an exploit and I have more fun in stumbling upon a vault by pure luck.
But Legends Viewer is the way to find specific sites.

I never got it working for me on linux, but I got the hang of gm-editor well enough that I can find them through df.global.world.sites pretty well.

Just go to Legends Mode of the world you want to use.
Type "x" (xml dump).
Type "p" (export map/gen info)
(Optional: Type "d" (export detailed map and choose the maps you want to use))
Open Legends Viewer.
On the left side you will find "Legends XML/Archive" and right beside it "...".
Click the dots and search for your "xml dump" of your selected world inside your Dwarf Fortress folder.
Wait for all four datas to be loaded.
And there you go.
You can search for sites, civs, persons, etc.
Or you just can look at the map, toggle sites to be activated and look at what your world has to offer.
