Title: SMAK: Hunt a ~Magical Girl~ as SWAT!
Post by: syvarris on December 22, 2022, 01:36:32 pm
The year is 20XX, and adorable aliens which resemble bunnies have stealthily invaded Earth.  They seek to corrupt and kill our children, in an effort to use the children's souls to power the alien's intergalactic empire.  Every day, these monstrously cute little creatures grant children unimaginably dangerous magical powers, before setting them loose to wreak as much havoc as possible before the children's souls are harvested.

You are one of the elite SMAK operators who is at the leading edge of our counterattack.  You are equipped with top of the line experimental gear, and your soul has been etched with a reverse-engineered magical power similar to those the aliens grant children.  All this, so that you can fight toe-to-toe with the alien's greatest warriors:  Magical Girls!  And sometimes magical boys.

...Unfortunately, despite them being our own children, you're going to have to kill them.  It's in the team name, Killer.  But don't worry!  You're also equipped with gear to capture their souls after death, to prevent the aliens from harvesting them.  All captured souls will be taken back to HQ, where they will receive world class therapy, and eventually be implanted into a clone body so that they can live a normal life.  We definitely aren't going to use their souls to make superweapons.  That would be immoral.  And unnecessary.  Because you're going to win the war for us!

Got it?  Good.  Now load your gun and think of the children.

All are good!  I'm looking forward to seeing how this works out, myself.

FYI for everyone, you're free to suggest new equipment if you can think of something appropriate and interesting.  Or just fun, or a variation on something already in, like Irony's wrist grapples.  This isn't the most serious of games.

You'll get to see SMAK player rolls, like normal RTDs.  The magical girl's rolls... I could translate them for opposed rolls, maybe?  MGs use a roll table that's not quite 1-to-1 with RTD results, but it should be reasonable.

Zultan, I'll give your LMG advantage at medium range, with "high fire rate" being the bullet effect.  Basically, you hit with more bullets, but they don't do more damage individually than the basic rifle.

Rip Tooru, I guess.

((Pumsy's Seeds was a painful game to run, and was made during a very unpleasant part of my life.  I'd like to reboot it at some point, but I really can't justify that with my life's current state.  I might return to it in a year or two, or I might make something else.

SMAK, on the other hand, is the forum game equivalent of a shitpost.  I'll be happy if people enjoy it, but it's not particularly important to me.  If it fizzles out and dies in a week, I won't mind.))

PTW the carnage unfold the friendships develop.

((Aw man, no SMAK commander?  Not even a peanut gallery mission control?  Oh well, I'm sure they'll do fine~))

For approximately a month, SMAK has been attempting to track a particularly motivated magical girl, named Emine.  Emine is unusual; she is known to be directly antagonistic towards government, and especially our organization, seemingly with some way to obtain insider knowledge about our activities.  Her precise powers are unknown, but it is assumed that she is a stealthier kind of magical girl, or at least prefers to avoid fighting; she has raided multiple military bases, stealing equipment and setting off bombs, but has not been seen to engage in direct combat.

Recently we discovered Emine's base of operations.  She is living on top of a moderately remote mountain, thankfully away from any civilian population.  There's a small abandoned coal mine in the mountain, dating from the early 1900s; it's unknown if Emine is aware of its existence, but it's reasonable to assume that she has at least partially explored it.  The dominant terrain type in the area is an old growth evergreen forest, with massive trees.  Those with grappling hooks will have a significant advantage above ground, while those of you without exoskeletons or minimechs may find it hard to manuever through the undergrowth.  Be very careful--Emine may have prepared the area with traps, and may know you're coming.  We don't know the degree of her insider knowledge, but she is certainly not your typical unaware child.

There are three optional deploy points, to be chosen at your individual discretion.  Alpha is at the base of an old road leading up the south mountainside, towards the peak.  It hasn't been maintained for a long time, but is still the easiest and most obvious path up.  Bravo is at the mouth of one of the lowest mine entrance, also on the south face.  This mine has multiple exits, and you should be able to find a path to higher positions on the mountain through it; Emine might not be aware of how extensive the mines are.  Finally, Charlie is on the eastern face of the mountain, and should be the easiest path up if you're forcing your way through the undergrowth.  It's the best option if you want to avoid the obvious routes.

Finally, in light of the threat posed by Emine, we'll be providing you with not two, but three soultrackers for this mission.  All three are required to bring down the perimeter barrier.  Please volunteer for taking them, first come first serve.

Bravo, and Pass me one of those soul trackers!
Bravo and pass me a soul tracker!
charlie and a soul tracker

You each are given one of the soultrackers.  They're bulky, the size of a tablet or large book, but most of that mass is apparently hardening to make them nearly impossible to break.  The actual functional parts are quite simple: a switch you're supposed to flick once the magical girl is captured, which will bring bring down the perimeter wall once all three switches are flicked, and a button which sends out a ping to detect the magical girl's location.  A small screen in the center will show an arrow pointing towards her, once activated.

Bravo team:

The four of you quickly make your way to the mine entrance.  It's difficult to find; the road that once led to it has completely fallen been reclaimed by the wilds, and the entrance itself is quite small.  You all miss it at first, walking directly past it, with Kevin only noticing as he brings up the rear.  His sixth sense detects the hollow, and calls everyone to look.

Directly behind a large bush, there is a gaping hole in the earth.  The entrance has partly filled up with dirt, forcing you to crouch if you wish to enter.  That said, when Bob activates his helmet's light to look inside, he reports that the cave looks nice, clear and somewhat roomy.  He says they'll easily fit inside and won't have trouble heading through, especially not Joe since he doesn't have bulky armor.  Which the rest of the team recognizes as Bob's characteristic optimism--being realistic, it'll be a little tight for all of them except Joe, and they might have trouble if it comes to a fight, but they shouldn't have any difficulty making progress.

Charlie Team:

The Whisperer and the Australian both head into the wilderness, finding their own paths through the untamed woods.  While they take roughly the same route up the mountainside, their methods of traversal are entirely different.  The Australian, used to hunting in the wild, sliently grapples from tree to tree.  His experienced eye keeps watch as his heavily-armored partner below simply bulldozes a path through the undergrowth.  Wielding a warglaive in each hand, the Whisperer smashes through the vegetation as much as he cuts into it.  Between the raw power his exoskeleton grants, and his natural talent for destruction, he makes progress nearly as fast as his agile friend above.  It's impressive to watch, much as the Australian disdains the amount of noise the ironically-titled Whisperer is making.

Alpha "Team":

Gerald advances alone along the main road, heading up the mountain alone in his minimech.  Despite the fact that his mech was described as being "slow", he is very happy to find that it's really not a problem when he has time to get up to speed; it accelerates slowly, but once it gets into a sprint it can really eat up distance.  The main problem is that this is a mountain road, and as such has lots of tight turns that force him to slow down, and then slowly resume accelerating on.  Still, he's easily outpacing what he could do were he on foot.  And all in the comfort of his padded cockpit, with the leisure time to look around at the scenery through the many external cameras.  This really is a beautiful area, almost untouched woods as far as he can see.  He decides that, after the magical girl is captured, he's gonna get out of the mech and find a nice spot to sit and take in the view.  He did bring a packed lunch in the small cargo space of the mech, today looks like a perfect day for a picnic!

Everyone:

Suddenly, a deep rumble comes through the air.  It's not like an earthquake; nothing rattles, or shakes.  Instead, it's felt internally, inside your bones and inside your skull.  It makes you feel unsteady, wobbly, like you're being shifted from side to side, even though your body doesn't move at all in response.  The disorienting sensation builds, and for a brief moment you feel like you're looking at yourself from a distance, in third person--and then there's a sudden snap, and it's all gone, with your body feeling totally fine.

You look upwards, and nod as you realize what has happened.  The previously bright blue sky has been replaced with a featureless white.  The perimeter barrier has been put up, and the mission is starting for real.

The hunt has begun.

Move forwards towards the suspected dwelling of the Magical Girl.

"I hope she comes out alright after reprocessing. It's a shame we have to do this to children, but it's for their own good."

You continue to make good time up the road.  It's a nice day out, and nothing notable happens while you drive your minimech.  If it weren't for the giant white barrier dome blocking out the sky and horizon, or the fact that you know there's a dangerous magical girl trapped in here with you, this would be a nice leisurely ride.  As is, it's still pretty nice, you just have to keep your eyes peeled for danger.

Soon enough, you come to a fork in the road, near the summit.  This is a pretty small "mountain".  Ahead, the road leads to the topmost and supposedly largest mine entrance, the one Emine most likely is aware of.  But... the second path leads further up the slope, towards the peak of the mountain.  It's even more overgrown than the old road you've been on, hardly enough for one person to walk through.

Keep advancing, try to find a vantage point overlooking the mine entrance(s).

[Mobility: 2, 5]

You break away from the Whisperer, using your grappling hooks to swing up the slope.  This is really the perfect environment for grappling hooks; massive trees, without too many branches to catch you as you swing through the forest.  You push yourself, heading upwards as fast as you can, and your effort is rewarded: you quite quickly reach the highest mine entrance on the mountain.

The area has clearly been long overtaken by nature.  The only reason you even realize you've stumbled across the entrance is the complete lack of tall trees; there's only flourishing undergrowth, and some young trees which aren't tall enough to swing from with your grappling hooks.  The area seems to have been partially excavated long ago, with a short cliff bordering the far side of the area.  After you start looking, you can see some remains of old buildings among the greenery as well... but the area doesn't look inhabited at all.  There's no signs of trash, or obvious paths that have been maintained.

After about quick visual survey, you spot the mine entrance itself.  It's a gaping black hole in the cliff face, which is utterly exposed.  There's not much growth around it, no real cover, though a magical girl at full sprint would be able to cross the gap in a flash.

keep advancing

You, unfortunately, can't make progress nearly as fast as the Australian tree swinger who left you behind.  You simply can't sprint uphill through wild undergrowth, even with your armor and exoskeleton.  Nothing for it, though; you just grit your teeth and try to channel your annoyance at being left behind into more aggressively hacking at the plants blocking your way.

Fuck plants, seriously.  You wish you had a flamethrower.

Who needs heavy armor when you have enough explosives to level a city on your back? me, and my bomb go in the hole.
Press the ping button wait for the guy with a nuke on his back to go through the hole and if he doesn't blow up follow after him
Proudly enter the mine
Wait until everyone else has entered the mine, then go in covering the back with my LMG.

The three of you wearing heavy armor hesitate before entering the mine, but Joseph has no such worry.  Despite having no armor or genuinely useful gear, he hops into the dark mine immediately.  The other three follow after him, squeezing into the tight space one at a time, with Bob covering the rear.

Magnus fiddles with his soultracker as he follows along, pressing the ping button and waiting for a response.  The magical girl is... above and ahead.  Probably either at the peak of the mountain, or somewhere along the slope to the peak.  That's somewhat relieving; she's probably not in the mines, or at least not near you.

The trek through the passageway is initially tense, but quickly becomes boring.  The team's flashlights play over the stone around them, but this is really just a thin entrance without anything notable.  The most interesting things they see are animal bones and poop.  There's many random turns and corners, with no real sense to them... but after the sixth such turn, all caution is gone.  There's no traps or anything down here, and even if there were, some curious animal would have set them off.

After a little while, you finally come to a somewhat larger passage.  Perhaps large enough to fit a car through.  It slopes gently upwards to your right, and there's an ancient set of minecart rails set into the center of it.  This is probably the main shaft, and it's easy to imagine where it'll lead if you go upwards, but otherwise you're left to guess.

Hold the entryway to the mines, ensure that if she's still in there she can't flee out this exit.

"Holding position at uppermost mine entrance. Waiting for further information."

You ignore the side path, advancing down the roadway towards the main mine entrance.  You find it soon enough, though it takes you a few seconds to realize that's what you've found.  While the road is navigable, the old mine area is overgrown with young forest, and has plenty of cover for anyone hiding inside.  You could probably change that with an extended volley from your miniguns, but that'd be clearly announcing your location to anyone on the mountain.

Instead, you just force your way through the undergrowth until you find a spot with an angle on the actual tunnel.  Then you relax.  With a few taps of a finger, you tell the mech's audio system to start playing something relaxing while you wait.  You bob your head with a lazy smile as a happy little synth tune (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPojjUgZy7I) fills the cockpit.

Whoops, thought I'd posted.

Cover entrance with sniper rifle. Prime hunting grounds, she might or might not move through here...

You grapple up to a higher position, finding a nice large tree branch with a lot of foliage around it for concealment, about four or five stories above the ground.  Then you pull out your sniper rifle and zero it for the mine entrance... and wait.

A minute later, you hear more smashing of undergrowth as the second excessively noisy teammate of yours arrives in his minimech.  The brute forces his way through the greeny below until he can take a position watching the mineshaft.  Unlike you, his position is extremely obvious to anyone surveilling the area, what with being in a giant shiny metal vehicle.

Eh.  He'll get shot first, at least.

Up sounds Promising.
Follow the shaft upwards, also keep covering the rear of the team.
Go up with the boys
Keep on keeping on

The four of you march up through the mineshaft.  It's boring, tiring, and stressful; there's no illumination beyond your own limited flashlights, and there's far, far too many side tunnels.  Properly clearing this place would take hours, and you know the magical girl could be in any tunnel, ready to pop out and kill you.  Hopefully they're at least not interconnected, else finding her down here could be damn near impossible.

Luckily, you don't encounter her.  But you do find proof that she's been down here.  Kevin notices a simple water bottle, discarded on the floor.  It's not exactly fresh, but doesn't look like it's been sitting here for months, either.  So the magical girl has come down here before.   Fairly far, too; you're not quite at the top yet, though you're close.

The discovery puts you all back on edge.  You were starting to hope she didn't even know this mine was here.  It'd be far better to fight her on the surface, where there's good light and no real chokepoints.

Turn on soultracker.  Keep pressing forward.

You pause for a minute to press the button on the soultracker, then watch as its screen blinks.  After a second, it gives you a direction--straight west, and up.  Towards the mountain's peak.  You're close enough to tell that it doesn't point to the main mine entrance, or low enough to be in the mines.  Well.  That'll make this simple.

Satisfied with your goal, you continue hacking through the wilderness towards your target.  You should be able to get to the peak by the end of the next turn.

So I go off for the holidays and apparently this got started while I was away?

Waitlist me please

((Waitlisted!  You can spawn in with the respawn wave, after four players die.  If you want to join sooner, bug Egan to kill people faster~))

Keep moving with the team and continue to cover the rear.
I really do not have a choice but to keep moving forward frankly
Onwards and Upwards!
hope for the best and keep moving

The four of you continue, picking up the pace now that the team knows the magical girl isn't down here.  The remaining trek passes quickly, but you stop near the mouth of the mine.  Kevin once again notices a subtle detail due to his magical power; the dirt in this part of the cave has been disturbed, in a path leading to one of the side tunnels.  He cautiously checks it out while Bob covers him, and finds a set of three rocket launchers, and a crash assault rifle, leaning against the passage's wall.  Just far enough down that they're not visible from the main passage.  They seem to have been placed here relatively recently; there's no dust on them or anything.  They were probably stolen during one of Emine's recent raids on military bases.  Worryingly, it proves she definitely has prepared anti-tank weapons, and that she knew you were going to come to her.

Magnus and Joe move onward, checking the entrance to the mine, only a stone's throw away.  As they step out, into the odd "daylight" given off by the barrier dome above, they survey their surroundings.  The area outside the mine is overgrown with plantlife, with no clear path through it.  Ruins peek through the greenery... and the shiny metal hull of Gerald's mech sticks out like a sore thumb.  Luckily, he's not so incompetent as to open fire on you.  Assuming he didn't get distracted and simply hasn't noticed you stepping out of the mine.

((You won't be slowed down if you mess with the rocket launchers before leaving.))

Hold the line. Make sure you're not about to get stabbed in the back while you're at it.
Patience. She'll be through here or she won't.

You both sit and watch the mine entrance, waiting for Emine to appear.  Or at least to link back up with more of the team.  It's boring, and takes a little while... but nothing happens in the meantime.  You just sit there and wait, until a figure appears at the mouth of the cave.  You both tense for a moment, fingers ready on your triggers, but a moment later relax as you recognize Joe.  And that nuke on his back.

Joe waves at Gerald, which Gerald returns... before remembering he's inside a cocoon of metal and cannot be seen.

keep moving forward

You continue hacking through the woods, annoyance growing.  Your exoskeleton and magic ensure it's not truly tiring work, but this is taking far too long.  The comms are quiet too, so everyone else is either as bored as you, or being killed without the chance to scream.

Eventually, you finally spot a clearing, ahead and off to the side, on a spot where the slope mostly flattens out.  You change direction towawrds it until you reach a point where you no longer need to hack through the woods to make progress.  You bullrush through the last few bushes, and then look around

[Spot check: 1]

There's an old, decrepit cabin in the middle of the small clearing.  It's starting to fall apart, the roof visibly beginning to give way.  Clearly uninhabited.  You frown.  There's windows, but you can't really make out anything inside.  It's surprising to find a cabin here, there wasn't any such thing mentioned in your briefing, but it's probably not important; nobody would choose to live in that awful little shack when they could live inside a nice, naturally air-conditioned mineshaft.

Yeah, she's definitely not inside the house.  She's probably further towards the peak or something.

Just outside mine entrance:

grab the rest of the rocket launchers and head to the peak.

Kevin and Bob loot the three rocket launchers before jogging up the mine to the entrance.  Joe gives them a friendly wave, while Magnus fiddles with his soultracker.  The other three lean in to look at it, Bob feeling like a child next to the three others in heavy power armor.  The tracker takes a moment to send out the ping... and then a direction appears, pointing almost towards the peak of the mountain.

You all look up in the direction the tracker is indicating.  It's... directly into a stone wall.  You'll have to go around.  But you're pretty far up the mountain, it shouldn't take long to get there.  Gerald's minimech has already risen from its position and started to forge a path through the forest, so the four of you rush to fall in behind him.

Move upwards towards the peak of the mountain, Mines teams have cleared out the area, so there shouldn't be anything concerning left in there.

You start heading towards the peak even before the cave team regroups outside, though the undergrowth is quite restrictive.  Your mech is powerful and massive, but you're forced to maintain a walking speed as you crunch through the undergrowth.  Not that you mind, really, you can just sit back in the cockpit and relax while the machine does the work.  And you're even making a path for your team to use!

You hear an explosion from up ahead and a bit to one side, and pause your music so that you can hear what's going on.  Nothing.  You begin to rev the mech's miniguns, altering its path to head towards the explosion.  Seems you're about to make contact.

Cover the heavies as they advance. If she's coming, it'll be looping around or waiting in ambush.

Gerald heads right into the woods, and the area's a bit too overgrown to give him much support from far back; you're forced to follow along, making sure to stay a moderate distance behind.  Hopefully far enough back to avoid detection, while still having a clear line of sight to Gerald's giant metal ass.

You hear the explosion as well, up ahead, but you don't yet have a clear line of sight to it.  But it's not far; you'd only need to make a couple big swings to get close enough to see.

determine her position with the soultracker, then keep going.  if she's in the house, call for backup.

You grumble as you pull out your soultracker.  This mission is taking way too long.  You press the button to locate the magical girl, and tap the side of the device impatiently as you wait for it to locate her.  When it does, it doesn't point towards the peak at all--it points upwards, and ahead.

[Mechanics hidden due to metagaming]

You look up, just as there's a resounding FWOOSH from one of the higher branches.  You barely have enough time to process that a rocket is streaking towards you; your magically-enhanced cyborg reflexes are the only reason you can manage to dodge in time, jumping to the side.  Unfortunately, the rocket missed--and you leap directly into its path.

It's a glancing hit, contacting your left thigh--but the explosion still throws you to the side.  You impact heavily against a tree, coughing through your disorientation.  Your leg is in agony; despite the glancing hit, the armor on your left leg has mostly been destroyed, with the remainder of it crushed down onto your thigh.  You try to straighten your leg, and growl in pain as the exoskeletal system--still functioning, somehow--loudly grinds against the bent armor to comply.  You can move, still, but only with intense pain.

[Moving your leg rapidly forces a willpower check.  Failure will give you penalties.]

You look up, at the branch where the rocket came from.  You only just catch sight of a falling tube, the expended rocket launcher, moments before it falls into the brush.  There's no sign of the magical girl who fired it--she's either invisible, or relocated while you were stunned.

take cover, call for backup, and get another ping.  in that order.

"Careful, she's invisible."

You pull yourself to your feet, growling as pain shoots up your leg.  You reach for the soultracker as you do... only to realize it's not attached to you.  Then you realize what happened--you had it in your hands when you were hit by the rocket, and let go of it when you were blasted away.  You look around for it, alert for another attack, and then relax slightly when you spot it a short distance away.  Laying in the tall grass.

You take a moment to mentally calculate whether hiding or grabbing the soultracker is more important.  The sound of Gerald's approaching mech makes you decide to grab the soultracker--you'll have cover in just a moment.  You limp-jog towards it, stretching out your hand-

And then just before you reach it, the soultracker rises into the air of its own accord, and shoots off into the bushes.

You immediately stop, stumbling backwards and tripping when your injured leg doesn't move far enough to catch you.  You call into your radio that you've spotted the magical girl just ahead, and point at the undergrowth ahead of you.  Moments later, gunfire erupts, a few stray bullets pinging off your armor as you turn and crawl-run back to take cover behind a tree.

Follow that mech!
Follow the mech, keep my LMG at the ready.
Follow the mech- wait.

Be the mech! Prepare for contacts while moving ahead!

I guess we are following that mech? Might as well do another ping.
Mech. Follow.

Gerald's minimech continues forging through the woods, as a gaggle of soldiers follow behind on foot.  It's just about to breach the clearing when Magnus reports that the ping says the magical girl is directly ahead and to the right--and Whisperer calls out the magical girl's just ahead of him.

Gerald cannot see into the clearing quite yet, and cannot see Whisperer or the magical girl.  However, he has two very large miniguns, and he has a direction of a target.  He adjusts their aim just slightly, and grins as he pulls both triggers.

[Mech Miniguns: 4, 6]

Both miniguns immediately start spitting out a withering hail of lead, carving through the forest.  Gerald cackles over the radio as he continues charging forward.  Once he reaches the clearing, he sees the cabin to the side, Whisperer scrambling for cover, and most importantly, the section of bushes the magical girl's supposed to be in.  He roots himself in place, sweeping his miniguns back and forth across the target area.

Everyone else, shocked by the sudden gunfire, scrambles for cover--some in the woods, others behind the decrepit old cabin.  Big Bob in particular braces his LMG against the corner of the cabin, covering the area being demolished by minigun fire... but he can't see any target, and doubts adding more random fire would be very helpful.

Assume she's present at the explosion and is now scurrying back to the top of the mountain. Attempt to intercept her at sniper range.

[Spot check: 5]

You start swinging ahead, passing the minimech quickly and swooping around the side of the clearing.  Your plan is interrupted, however, when you spot the magical girl.  You see her for just a moment, crouched on a lower branch ahead of you--and then she's gone, in an instant.  You grapple to a higher branch, then wield your sniper rifle and start scanning below you for signs of her.  She appears midair, a stone's throw from the clearing, and falls down into the brush.  You immediately lose sight of her, but keep your rifle leveled, searching for any sign of the girl.

Your careful stalking is interrupted a few seconds later, when the mech opens fire, sweeping twin streams of bullets back and forth across the undergrowth.  The excessive amount of gunfire does a lot to strip the brush, cutting down smaller plants and blasting the greenery apart, and after a second, you spot the girl.  She's laying on her back, grimacing in pain, with one of her legs bloodied and twisted into a Z shape.  She's clutching a Crash assault rifle to her belly.

[Sniping!  4 2]

You take aim and fire a quick shot before she can disappear again.  It slams into her center-mass.  Aside from the full-body jerk from the bullet's impact, there's no sign of the damage you did... but you've seen what a round of this caliber does to the inside of a moose.  That girl now has mush in place of internal organs, and will be dead in just a couple of seconds.  Too much time; you slide your crosshairs up between her eyes.

She's looking back at you.

Move forward and get ready to fire with the assault rifle

[Blackpaladin: 3 (pain resist), 1, 6 (melee)]
[Crazyabe: 1]
[Fluffe: 2]
[Zultan: 6]
[Saki: 6]

((Xantalos is with you in spirit.))

All of you charge forwards as a barely-organized mob, Joe leading the charge alongside a limping whisperer.  The heavy machine gun fire from the mech lets up as you move forward, but is promptly replaced by bullets from your own weapons; Bob in particular hipfires his LMG on full auto, sweeping it back and forth while walking forwards and staying near the back of the group.  Kevin assists him, firing wherever Bob does not.

Whisperer smashes forward into the undergrowth, his limp only slightly impeding him.  Friendly bullets ping off the back of his armor, but they're not nearly high enough caliber to penetrate, allowing him to focus on his task.  And after breaching through the first line of bushes, he spots his target, the magical girl.  She's scrambling away, low to the ground, and completely free of any kind of wound.  Not that he's worried about that; he barrels forward with a roar, warglaives raised high.

[Emine bravery: Partial success]

The girl spins around around on a dime, smoothly drawing a parrying dagger with one hand and raising it up high.  The thin blade catches and deflects Whisperer's first warglaive--but not the second, which cleaves from her right shoulder to her left hip.  The warglaive is sharp, but not all that thin, and smashes as much as it slashes; as a result, the girl's body crumbles around the blade as her torso is bisected.  She doesn't even have the ability to scream, though she seems to try, her eyes wide with horror.

Then, before the girl's head and left arm hit the ground, the entire bloody mass disappears.  Whisperer quickly starts stabbing the ground nearby, but doesn't hit anything--she's not invisible, she's just gone.  The rest of her body is here though, and is still clutching a crash assault rifle in one hand.  Magnus--glowing with an intense golden light--comes up behind Whisperer, scanning around with his rifle, but he can't spot any further signs of the magical girl.

Meanwhile, Kevin and Bob have stopped shooting, as Whisperer's armored body inadvertently shielded the girl he was attacking.  Instead, they've rushed forwards towards Joe; they accidentally shot in the legs.  Quite a few times.  And unlike Whisperer, the only "armor" he's wearing is a heavy metal backpack nuke, and even though it did protect his chest from being shot full of holes, his legs were not so lucky.  As such, Joe is now laying on the ground in a growing pool of his own blood, screaming and cursing the allies who shot his legs full of holes.

Bob cheerily comments that the screams are a good sign.  After all, Joe can't be too close to death if he's still able to scream.

"Let's make this quick."

Avoid gunning down any of my friends, but lay down another stream of fire on the suspected location of the MG. Be the AA gun.

[Minigun rolls: 3, 2]

Unlike the trigger happy infantry ahead of you, you hold fire once some of your allies charge ahead.  Unfortunately, Whisperer is leading the charge, and directly interposes himself between you and the target, so there's really no use in firing.  Unlike the light crash rifles they use, your miniguns might do real damage to him.

So you just manuever closer, trying to get an angle, and not finding one.  You do get a good view as Joe gets shot, though!  Gee, he's lucky he's the one with a medical power.  That'd suck a lot more if there were nobody who could fix him up!

"Her leg's crippled, but trust nothing!"

Dodge. I don't know what she's up to, but if she's as out of options as this looks like my teammates will bag her any second now.

You immediately retreat, grappling to a tree behind, and swinging past and into a higher position in the canopy.  Once secure, you take a moment to make sure your position isn't too obvious, and then you pull your sniper rifle back out and take aim.  Just in time to witness the moment when the magical girl gets bisected and disappears.

You lower your rifle, looking around with a careful eye.  You can't see any sign of the girl, either.

ping.  advance cautiously

((Man, I never thought I'd be that good at slaughtering small magical girls while in a close combat mech suit.))

Whisperer searches for his soultracker, but cannot find it.  Whisperer expected it to be on the magical girl's corpse, as he saw her telekinetically grab it only a moment ago, but it's nowhere to be seen.  He even picks up her mangled body to turn it over, then looks around at the ruined forest floor, but he can't find anything aside from the girl's Crash.  That's very worrying--if she collects all three of them, she'll be able to just leave, and there's not much the team can do about it after they've lost the trackers.

Fortunately, Magnus still has his tracker, and has pateintly been waiting for it to find her while Whisperer searched.  When the tracker does find her, it points directly upward.  He looks up.  And sees Emine directly overhead, her scowling face peeking over the side of a branch.  There's five Crash rifles levitating near her, aimed at him.  Magnus doesn't really have the time to mentally process this fact, as a half-second after he looks up, the five levitating rifles open fire, each of them perfectly aimed at his eyes.

Now, the heavy powered armor Magnus is wearing is designed to be immune to such mundane firearms--but even advanced materials enhanced with magic have their limits.  Fifteen bullets impact his helmet within a quarter-second, and though none of them penetrate, it's akin to being punched in the face.  He goes reeling backwards, the bullets still flawlessly tracking his sudden jerking movements; by the time he raises his arms to defend his face, he's been nearly blinded by damage to the helmet's visor.  He can see three intact bullets lodged inside the transparent material, hanging centimeters away from his eyes.  The gunfire only stops once the entire squad begins firing back.

Whisperer: [5]

The fire doesn't stop as Magnus falls backwards, redirecting to shoot at his neck, then his armpits, as he tries to defend himself.  But it's concentrated exclusively on him, allowing Whisperer to draw his own gun and return fire without interference.  He quickly lines up his sights on Emine's head, and pulls the trigger--only for her to jerk her head to one side just beforehand, dodging his bullet.  He shoots twice more to the exact same effect, before he decides to switch to automatic and simply spray bullets through the branch Emine is on top of.  The girl starts running down the length of the branch before he even thinks to do this, completely avoiding harm, though she doesn't stop firing at Magnus or so much as look away from him.

"It's not that deep, Joe. Just get over it! And yeah, I agree with Magnus."
Wait for the ping, prepare to use the magic jetpack and fly to the sky just in case there will be any attacks, shoot as well.
Wait for the people with the trackers to point out where she went, then either gun her down or press forwards.
"So is she dead or not?"
Wait until the ping happens and find out if she's dead.

You all wait patiently for one of the pings to go through, but it turns out to be pointless.  Before anyone can tell you where Emine is, she announces herself by opening fire from directly above Magnus and Whisperer.

Vermilion: [1], [6]
Zultan: [6] [5]
Saki: [1]

((Yeah, Xan really is with you.))

Reacting quickly, Verital opens fire before even taking aim, instead opting to walk his fire onto Emine, as she begins running down the branch she's on.  She suddenly stops mid-run, then steps backward and jumps over his stream of bullets.  Verital tries to track her movements, sliding his aiming reticles around to lead her, but somehow she always moves to just the right position to make him miss.  Still, he holds down both triggers, growing increasingly perplexed as to how she's dodging two miniguns without even looking at them.

Bob, in contrast, hesitates before opening fire, lining up on the girl.  When he does shoot, it's in controlled bursts--each of which misses when the girl makes a sudden surprising movement.  After a couple attempts, he just gives up on aiming, and holds the trigger down, chaotically sweeping his gun from side to side as the others fire.  This, finally, causes Emine to look away from her target, as she begins a violent flailing dance in an effort to dodge all the gun-fire directed at her.  A dance which soon fails, as she is grazed in her chest.  The hit sends her off-balance, and immediately afterward she's hit by several other bullets--from who, it's impossible to tell.  She falls off the branch, still flailing and trying to avoid bullets.

As for Kevin... he flies into the air, taking a flanking position... and his gun immediately jams the moment he tries to take a shot.  Poor Kevin.

This seems like a good time to *Ping* where she is.

Still bleeding out, but knowing there's always higher priorities than surviving, you pull out your soultracker.  Unfortunately, by the time it pings the magical girl's location, it's too late--she's already returned and opened fire.  You are in no condition to shoot back, so you just lay down, play dead, and focus on not bleeding to death through your mangled legs.

[4]

It goes pretty well all told.  You're still rapidly dying, but your vision's only going a little black.

"A decoy," The Australian mutters over the comms. "It's possible that was never the real her."

Drop down and examine the unbulleted underbrush nearby. See if I can find a trail or other signs of activity.

You fire a grappling hook into the branch you're standing on, then jump off, using the grapple to lower yourself safely down to the forest floor.  Your experienced eyes immediately start searching for signs of passage, but it proves to be in vain.  The magical girl did not return to the ground.  Somehow, she went up.

The others have the situation well in hand, or at least well in dakka, so you only spare a few seconds to watching the farce of a gunfight.  The magical girl is, apparently, dodging bullets.  As far as you can tell, she is doing so before those bullets are even fired.  Which is absolutely bullshit if it's what she's actually doing, but if it's a decoy...

You set to scanning around her surroundings, for any hint of a true position.  You don't find anything, but you're not certain if that's because there isn't anything to find, or if you've just missed it.

Everyone's in about the same location, or close enough:

Get my head down and find some cover from this telekinetic psycho NOW use my companions as meat shields if I gotta! I know she can see where I'm at but I need time and space to fix this damn visor! If I die who knows what magical bullshite she will pull off on the rest of the team! Also im keeping my ability on. (Honestly I just prefer not to die)

(Also you put the visor "wound" under the wrong person unless Magnus gained the ability to transfer armor wounds while I wasn't looking)

(Edit: Also also if we all blow up cause crazy refuses to do literally anything to save himself im gonna laugh and cry.)

((Whoopsie!  Thanks for the catch.  I was in a rush.

Something that I should've put in the narrative, your beacon power was indeed still active during this turn (as your action said) which was relevant.  You may want to specify if you keep it on/off, though I'd just assume off since you're retreating.

Also, I totally forgot Joe's nuke has a deadman's switch!  Thank you for that catch too.))

quietly Crawl towards the Magical girl- if someone knocks her down to me- I can grab-ahold of 'er and transfer ALL this fine damage straight to her! bloodloss AND limbholes included! worst case- I die right underneath her where my backpack can do the most damage.

(Triage: Touch one or more living people.  You may transfer any or all wounds one of them has (including yourself) to any other person you are in contact with (including yourself).  ANY wounds work, including loss of limbs or bisection. ~ I'm not *supposed* to count magical girls as 'persons' but I suspect they count as a target for this.)

The Australian raises an eyebrow at the absurd spectacle in front of him. Her other corpse hasn't vanished yet, so this whole situation is clearly outside the realm of normality, but something about this fiasco strikes him as even more suspect.

Take a sniper shot at one of her guns. Observe reaction.

Kevin's eyes tear up at this tragic sequence of events. Kevin considers using Joe as his puppet, it shouldn't matter much, he is dying anyway!

Pick Joe up and carry on shoulder until the magical girl is distracted enough, throw Joe on top of her when that happens. if Joe misses, pick him up again and wait for the next opportunity.

Turn tomorrow, probably.  Delay was due to the magical girl's turn being... complex to work through.  Due to that, actions are locked in and can't be edited.  So:

I mean, this is the first turn I'm trying the likely less intended application of Triage while everyone takes potshots at 'er, and likely the turn where otherwise it'd be a "rocks fall- Joe blows literally everyone up" situation. so either she takes all the damage from me getting shot this turn, or everyone dies viva Taktical nuklear bakpack.

[3, 2]

You track the girl's falling form, watching the guns follow her down.  They've ceased firing, and move predictably--until they suddenly disappear, along with her.  You're confused for a moment, until you hear the gunfire resume, now from within the clearing.  You swing around and try to take aim with your rifle braced against a treetrunk, but unfortunately the first floating object you align your crosshairs with is a flashbang grenade.

You look away just a moment before it explodes, and then immediately scope back in.  Emine is running through the clearing, though you focus on one of her guns, currently firing wildly, clearly without intent of actually hitting anything.  You still fire your shot, but the rifle jerks out of the way just as you pull the trigger.  And then it disappears entirely.

...It takes you several seconds to realize, but it's not just the rifle.  Emine is gone as well.  Or at least, is out of sight.

Find the enemy and point my LMG at it and fire upon said enemy until it is dead or gun is empty.

Move forward, prepare to sweep any contact with almost sufficient amounts of dakka.

Zultan: [1]
Blackpaladin: [5]
Vermilion: [2], [3]

All three of you continue shooting at Emine as she falls through the air, moving to intercept.  But before any of your bullets land, she disappears again.  She reappears in front of Gerald and Bob, however, so it shouldn't be a problem for them to redirect their fire down into her.  That is, if not for the flashbang she tosses into the air just as she arrives.  It explodes just as they start to acquire her as a target, and they're further distracted by bullets pinging randomly against their heavy armor.  Both are virtually immune to such small arms, but neither of them are mentally prepared for being suddenly blinded and attacked; they reach instinctually, by firing their weapons randomly forwards, while trying to back away from the magical girl.

"You all made a mistake coming here! If you win, things will only get worse for the world. Lay down your weapons. If you truly--"

Whisperer keeps a cooler head.  He doesn't realize where Emine's gone until he hears the flashbang go off, and as such, isn't blinded by it.  He turns on a dime, and sees her running towards him while shouting, her colorful clothing marred by multiple bloodstains.  He spares neither her words nor her appearance any thought, immediately firing at her legs, sweeping his rifle back and forth to make the shots harder to dodge.  This works surprisingly well, catching Emine in a leg as she runs, and cutting off her little speech before it can really begin.  The magical girl tumbles to the ground roughly, one of the rifles above her swinging around to fire at him instead.  Not that it has any effect, the bullets pinging uselessly against his chestplate.

Whisperer is about to fire a burst into her prone body, when Kevin comes rocketing into view, Joe held in his arms.  Joe reaches forward, trying to grab the girl--and she reaches back, a vicious grin on her face.  They make contact.

...And then they're gone.  Emine, Joe, and Kevin; the only hint that they were even there a moment ago is the panicked weapons fire of Gerald and Bob, who take a few seconds to realize their target is gone.

Whisperer limps out of the brush, growling as he reloads his rifle.  This is such bullshit!  She just keeps getting away!

Pick Joe up and carry on shoulder until the magical girl is distracted enough, throw Joe on top of her when that happens. if Joe misses, pick him up again and wait for the next opportunity.

Kevin starts to fly down towards Joe just as Emine's knocked off of her branch.  Her flashbang goes off nearby as he descends, disorienting both him and his crippled teammate--but not his magical jetpack, which quite literally has a mind of its own.  Kevin scoops Joe up into his arms, and then turns to look at Emine.  Just in time to see her go down.  Joe reaches towards the girl, demanding that Kevin fly him closer, and Kevin doesn't hesitate.  The two of them go rocketing towards her, like a heavily armored missile with a cripple warhead.

Joe grimaces as he feels another bullet impact him, hitting his ribcage.  He's already familiar enough with the sensation to realize Big Bob shot him again, but there's no time to yell at Bob.  Also, his lungs are collapsing, and he probably cannot yell anymore.  Instead, he reaches towards the magical girl.  Who looks up at him and makes eye contacts a second before he arrives.  She grins, reaching up to grab his hand the moment he's close enough.

A lot happens in that instant.  Joe instantly shunts all his wounds into the already wounded magical girl, his body refilling with blood and flesh.  More surprisingly, both Joe and Kevin's vision goes completely black.  They fly forward, slamming into the magical girl.  Joe keeps a firm grip on her, even though he can't see anything at all.  He starts to fumble, wrestling her and trying to maintain his hold, while Kevin commands his magjecpack to hover in place.

(Edit: Also also if we all blow up cause crazy refuses to do literally anything to save himself im gonna laugh and cry.)

You panic, clumsily crawl-running away from the terrifying child with magic powers.  Miraculously, she doesn't resume shooting at you, though you hear continued gunfire and yelling.  You cower behind a tree until the noises stop, then peak out to check.  Your damaged visor makes it really hard to make anything out, but through a clear-ish spot in your peripheral vision, you can sort of scan the area.  Your teammates appear to all be fine, though you can't see where Joe went.  And there's no sign of the magical girl.

Which, unfortunately, likely means she's right above you.  You look up, but can't... really make out anything.  At all.  Except the color green.  But you're pretty sure there's nothing moving above you, and also last time she shot you the moment you looked up, which in hindsight makes you feel a little dumb for looking up again.  Maybe she went somewhere else?  Maybe inside the old cabin in the clearing?

You either know where you are, or you know that you don't know:

It's still pretty debatable just how well it's coming along, but it does look better than it... ever has.  At least internally.  Externally it was never accurately advertised.  :(

was it This AoTTG2 (https://www.youtube.com/@aottg2official320/videos)?

One and the same!  Though that channel--and pretty much all of old AoTTG 2's official social media--were essentially propaganda.  The old leader was very much focused on maintaining hype rather than on accurately representing how far along the project was.  I haven't watched all of those videos, but I think the only stuff shown there which hasn't been dumpstered is the main menu art and the music.  Engine changes mean the lighting system and "training grounds" map can't be carried over to Ricecake's codebase, though that map was borderline nonfunctional to begin with.

If you're curious what I mean when I refer to "racing" in this game, this video is a good example. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrjETrux5yk)  It's basically just navigating high-speed obstacle courses with spiderman-esque grappling mechanics.  Except way more complex than any actual spiderman game.  Note how the aesthetics have precisely nothing to do with Attack on Titan.
