Title: Battle Arena: Gladiators of Chaos (OOC and Sign ups)
Post by: Ozarck on September 05, 2015, 02:17:16 pm
IC thread (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=152967.0)

Dragged from your many homes, selected by unknown means, for unknown reasons, you have been brought to this place and dumped unceremoniously into a large holding cell with many others, some somewhat like yourself, and others quite foreign to your experience.

You don't know it yet, but you are about to take part in some gruesome gladiatorial contests, your hope of survival is slim. Your chance of escape is laughable. Your hope of winning your freedom from the cold overseers of the Arena is unknown.

Your past is irrelevant. your hopes and dreams: meaningless. You have one goal: survive.

you have two more points to spend in resistances. Currently you have +9 and -2 for a total of +7

also, no bear skills? That's fine, but they are available. If you like, I could make a suggestion or two :P

Sticking a post here so I'll probably be reminded it exists in the morning.

I'll probably make a sheet sooner or later.

How far can we go with our sheets?

Well, the first player is a bear, and my only concerns were that he has two few points in resistance and he hasn't posted skills, so that's a start. Remember Roll to Alien? There are a couple fewer restrictions here, but I want you to test them out. I'm actually tempted to bump up the stat points available, though. Maybe to 49.
Yoink, if you edit your stats to boost them to 49 total, I'll edit the OP.

Oh, okay, I wasn't quite sure how skills were supposed to work- I thought maybe you hadn't edited them in yet. :P
These okay? Or is that supposed to include combat skills?

Let me know if I need to change anything...or come up with an entirely different character all together. :P

EDIT: Fixed

Dancing fishing and tracking are fine, but you're a bear: negotiation and cooking are greyed out. Maybe foraging instead of cooking, and cooperation or intimidation or something like that for negotiation. Singing ... hmmm. I'll allow it. Laslo has a terrible, angry voice.

Also, yes, combat skills count. so slashing and biting for instance.

+2 to climbing, +1 to playing, +1 to scratching, +1 to surviving great falls
-2 to combat, -1 to charisma, -1 to cooperation, -1 to fighting dogs
charisma isn't a skill. it's a stat that is sort of folded into will. cooperation is fine, as it takes some talent to get along with others. Something along that line in place of charisma will be fine. hmmm, something like intimidation or persuasion. This is the only issue your sheet has!

Spoiler: Charsheet (click to show/hide)
Looks good. Look athe other entries for hints on skills. If you aren't sure, stick it in, and I'll let you know. If you want a generic average person, leave the skills blank as you have.

You guys are building some pretty good characters here so far! I must say you have gone a different direction than I expected (except moonlit, he's got a pretty straightforward one :P).

I gave myself a combat skill, since that seems kind of important.
If it's too vague/powerful I could drop it to a +1.

MOONLIT, your stats add up to 30. I bumped starting stats to 49 (for some reason, I thought I had 7 stats. that would have made 7 average).

I'm gonna assume the following correction until you post a change.
8 8 8 2 2 2
13 12 12 4 4 4

+2 to climbing, +1 to playing, +1 to scratching, +1 to surviving great falls
-2 to combat, -1 to intimidation, -1 to cooperation, -1 to fighting dogs
I just noticed this. it's fine, it means you'll have a stacked penalty against "dogs" though.

Okay, here's my character, it may be a little on the silly side but then again we've got your garden variety cat and bear, so... Anyway, the race description is obviously just my own interpretation of the race that I've made to use for this forum game, so while it's not "True" to the original folkloric creature but is more usable for the game.

Skills: Leaving painful scratches: +2, climbing: +1, grip: +1, perception: +1.
Reading: -2, running: -1, perception after being blinded: -1, weapon-usage: -1.
Original interpretations are preferred. I can't be asses to go reading or watching or listening to source material.

As for these skills, perception after being blinded is a situational malus. Everyone with eyes gets that. Now, if instead the eye only worked half the time (depending on a roll by me), then it would be a balanced skill, because it would have equal chance of favoring or harming you in all circumstances.

I gave myself a combat skill, since that seems kind of important.
If it's too vague/powerful I could drop it to a +1.
it's approved. you're all set.

approved as is, but I'll wait for your skills.

Blunt is when you are hit by anything non sharp. Crush is when you are squeezed between two objects, like a nut in a nutcracker, or a human skull in an alligator's jaws. Or a kitten in an avalanche. Or a bear in a philosophy debate between Plato and Socrates.

We have enough players to get started. Get your skills set the way you want and prepare for a wild ride. I'd like to start this afternoon i possible, but will wait if the group needs / wants a little more time. Start thinking about your next character, while I start crafting your arena and opponents.

((if that's the case, then crush damage is half of normal damage that squeeze you between 2 objects(eg. biting deals cut+crush or piercing+crush, landslides deal blunt+crush), right?))

Nah, crush will affect internal organs and break hard shells and stuff. I mentioned nuts, right? If you are in the jaws of a velociraptor, first you will receive piercing, then tearing (cut) then crushing, for example. If a rhino rams you then tramples you, you will receive blunt from the ram and crush from the trample.

You have 51 in stats currently. Flying is innate. You have no skills then?

I had intended for the eye thing to always give me a +1 to perception until blinded, which would cancel out the +1 and also give the character a -1 to it until the blindness wore off, but now that I think of it, that's silly, so I've changed the blindness thing into a -1 for intimidation. I have some questions though.

Us players are expected to have a malus skill to go with every bonus skill, that makes sense. What I'm having trouble with is coming up with malus skills that don't seem like joke ones, so is there any website or tip you could offer to help with that?

What does Will and Intelligence do, exactly?

In the game, if I wanted to make a character that can cast fireballs or has cryokinesis, what skills would be ideal for them, as they're non-physical?
I have no suggestions for websites or such for your maluses. oh wait. Maybe consult the GURPS (generic universal role playing system) handbook for some ideas. Or just ask here. I or another player can give suggestions. As for the jokingness of maluses, one of our humans has a plus to holding liquor and a minus to resisting beer, so they balance. If you have pluses to guns, grenades, heavy weapons, systems, hand to hand, perception, and dodge, and maluses to poetry, crayons, allergies to peanuts, and the ability to rhyme on purpose, I might object. Or you might be giving the gm ideas.

Will is strength of mind, resistance to intimidation, ability to impose your desires on a group, that kind of thing. Intelligence is ability to learn, quickness of thought and flexibility in uncertain situations. Knowledge governs memory, information about the world, and its applicaility.

as for spells, it depends on which type of magic you employ. A ew examples are: rite magic, spellcasting (like from a grimoire, which you'll need), alchemy, sympathetic magic, demon summoning, farseeing, innate magic (think pixies), wild magic, contractual magic, faith magic. They have varying degrees of power and varying side effects. And thee are examples off the top of my head. Others exist.

some magics use will, some use intelligence, some use knowledge (i.e spellcasting), some use constitution (hmm, didn't give you either a health or a constitution stat. Oh well, I'll figure it out in game), some use a mix.

two little issues.
1) you only have 43 in stats
2) you have three +2 in skills and no corresponding -2s

also, there's no need to post your character in IC :P

I just put it in the IC because I mentioned a new charsheet. So I just felt like I should put it there.

I thought we had 49 points in total? Apparently not... (43+3*2=49) Eh, I'll add some more stuff in.
you get 49 points for stats only, and your skills must balance out to 0. I'll edit the OP later to make it clearer.

Has the actual arena event even started, or are we just derping around killing each other backstage? :P
Yes.

We haven't gotten to an actual arena, but the Arena has treated this as a legitimate combat. Well, two legitimate combats, actually. Oddly enough.

Post by: Ozarck on September 12, 2015, 09:05:03 pm
you still only have 47 stat points spent. The negatives are fine, but your stealth minus is going to be broader than "in nature." Mostly because it would be hard to hide a big glowing blob of hot anywhere nonvolcanic, I think. Just make those two modifications and you're all set. I'll read you in when I can. right now, reading you in would simply crisp the others. We'll see what develops and I'll get you going, on way or another. Looks like this impromptu round of combat has wrapped, so I'll probably write up a transition tomorrow, a I haven't slept in a while and can't think much now.

I know the stats and dice rolls are a little wonky. In part that's because I am experimenting, and in part it's because I wanted it a little messy anyway. I hope you guys enjoy the mess, the death, and the setting. And stuff.

Moonlit, you are aware that you havea -3 to heat, and a +6 to radiation?

As is, I'll allow it, but be aware that heat is a form of radiation, and as such, certain kinds of radiation will affect you positively, while others affect you negatively. Basically, the shorter the wavelength, the better for you (gamma, xray, UV) while the lower forms are harmful (infrared, radio, microwave). If you had something else in mind, please clarify.

okay, here's what I got for your skills

+2 rqadiation beam
+2 natural armor (v physical hits)
+2 touch damage

-2 climbing
-2 using items
-2 stealth

as for the +2 burning things with your energy and -2 "being in the dark," they seem kinda redundant as worded. I left both of them out for now.

Also, that passive armor is close to being a resistance, but I think it works as is due to the nature of the creature.

With the edits I mentioned above, your Terror is ready to go. I'll write it in either this upcoming round, or soon after. If you want to make modifications, or feel like I have edited it improperly, I'll retcon any issues, up to a point. (no six turns in going "I wanted him to be able to eat fairy dust and poop  magic mushrooms!" [almost gave a practical suggestion there, oops])
Title: Re: Battle Arena: Gladiators of Chaos (OOC and Sign ups)
Post by: Ozarck on September 14, 2015, 07:53:06 am
Well... make that a -6 to cold and 0 to heat, if you want. I just wanted to get the 6 on rads.

I guess the natural armor stacks with the other stats. My suggestion would be to make it down to a +1, as it does add to 4 different stats. It'll still count as a +2 for balance, though.
I'm fine with leaving the other things out. They were a little redundant... but hey, stackable debuffs. As it'd be impossible not to notice Terror in a dark place, even with a 1 roll (+4) or detection. Burning things was more towards melting stones and stuff, which would be a lot slower than melting flesh. But that's because stone and stuff kinda starts with a +1 to resist melt.
Am losing electricity in short bursts right now...
The natural armor is fine, as it a) is integral to the character, and b) is balanced sufficiently by a negative. Also, note that while the natural armor applies to several kinds of damage, it also does not apply to them. That is, a concussive wave of air will not be affected, so explosion and the like are going to do their full damage. bullets would likely be going to fast to be significantly affected, as would arrows, probably. nets, ists, clubs, and so forth will of course be affected.

Now, as for the change to -6 cold and 0 heat: I neither want nor reject this idea. I mentioned an interpretation of your stats that would work with what you have. But you re welcome to switch to those stats i that its your conception of your character better :D

Also, 'losing electricity'? you mean you are radiating energy and are gettng weaker by it, or are you speciically meaning that your character has an electric based stat? if the latter, I haven't seen that. Could you explain?

Still confused (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rad_%28unit%29)

He is made of a unit of measurement?

Particle radiation, then? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiation) as opposed to electromagnetic or acoustic radiation?

Post by: Ozarck on September 15, 2015, 07:05:08 am
Okay. The question remains, do you want those resistances changed to -6 cold, 0 heat?

Also, sorry to hear about the electricity at your place :(
