Title: Unortodox Species Adventurers
Post by: Fawnek on September 12, 2016, 10:18:19 pm
I will be conducting some !!SCIENCE!! involving the various animal men and their effectiveness. using version 43.05 (just switched, discarded old data)

Standard Stats
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It will occur in the following order:
Horseshoe Crab man
Gorlak
Rhino man
Lizard man
Plump Helmet Man
Hippo Man
(TBD) I'm open to suggestions.

I will embark as a locally important Hero in sites preferably owned by humans, although if that is not an option, i will attempt to embark to elf, dwarf, and goblin settlements (respectively)

The Dead:
Horseshoe Crab man
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
kills: 3
Cause of death: Pack of wolves
Overall: Not usefull as of now, may become more usefull in the future if they gain ability to burrow.
Pro: Armor protects against most scratches
Con: Same as all Animal races.

Gorlak
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kills 2
Cause of death: Encasement in Ice while drinking.
Overall: May be effective as an archer build.
Pro: Has increased night vision
Con: Slower than human
Notes: the tusks seem to be nothing more than a cosmetic.

Rhino Man
Story(http://i.imgur.com/yZV4dNc.png)
After finding a LAIR, i tried to head back to my hut in the region only to encounter my demise.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kills: 16, most notably a pack of wolves, single handedly (no survivors!).
Cause of death: battle with cougar with no sleep.
Overall: a big meaty tank
Pro: seems to have some natural armor, the horns make for great spears, has a gigantic profile (helps with wrestling)
Con: Gigantic Profile (no sneaking)
notes: i expect it to be made a herbivore only animal in the future.

Lizard Man
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
kills: 1
Cause of death: a goblin ambushed me, and killed my companion before shooting me with about 1,000 arrows.
pros: the claw attack seems to be better, but i'm not sure as my hands were crushed in the beggining of a battle.
cons: bite attack is not improved as you think it would.

Plump Helmet Man
Kills:0
cause of death: a Zombie in the fort i started in...
Pros:small
Cons:very fragile, cannot speak, small

Be sure to play the latest version if you're using a Gorlak. Not being able to open doors is about as not fun as it sounds.

Easy enough raw fix.

Yeah. Just wanted to point out that it's fixed now in case the op didn't notice and moved straight on to the next critter.

By the way, 'no armour' is going to be an issue for pretty much every non-standard creature. You could always make a stockpile of armour sized each critter in a fortress before you start. Start your adventurers some distance from it for a challenge.

Play a plump helmet man legendary dodger!

I'm the only one who recalls Mushroom People from Dark Souls?

EDIT: forgot "only" in the sentence. *facepalm*

May do that in future, but that would ruin the standard skills i have... in order for any !!SCIENCE!! to be done at least some variables must be constant. and as it turns out the Rhino man is bad ass  :D

Try hippo man and use "bite" attack.

You will be seriously surprised by what happens to all those wolves and humans that try to attack you.

One-Punch Man + A lot of toughness and endurance  = Mushroom dad.

Those were some savage dudes, although a 2-handed Zweihander made them stagger anyways.

Back on topic, I like the approach of these series. Are the most popular ones (e.g. bark scorpion man, gila monster man) already reviewed somewhere?

Hm, maybe jaguar man? Jaguars are pretty fast (though apparently slower than gazelles?), but otherwise jaguar man is almost as small as human, and gets 30kph gait, not the 64 of base animal. I wonder if the greater base speed affects anything.

Capybara man, essentially a dwarf that can never drown due to being amphibious.

what about the bird men? they can fly. and the flying insect men are even cooler, since they tend to have 4 arms(which means you can start with 3 shields).

As far as bird men, I recall someone mentioning peregrine falcon men are the fastest creatures available in the game, with a max flight speed of 5 or something. That's impressive.

Penguin people are proving surprisingly interesting for me. You might have fun with one.

I haven't looked at the raws, but mine seems like a good swimmer. I'm not sure if they have a bite attack, but their beak is a defined target, and I do have a rather easy time biting for someone with no skill. They're small, though, and might be more frail than I realize given the unusual bonuses she has.

Mine knocked over a statue and became a vampire, then a necromancer, ravaging hillocks and hamlets enroute to the tower. She's done well so far!

EDIT: I checked the raws! Penguin men apparently have a talon scratch attack, a beak bite attack, and a faster swim speed than other modes of travel (30 kph) available to them.

Tigermen/Lionmen/Bearmen are probably a flat advantage, aside from needing custom equipment.

Being able to fly (birdmen) is a huuuuge survival advantage, being able to escape from danger pretty easily in most situations. They tend to be smaller, and thus able to carry less. I'd recommend Albatross people, I think they're the largest flying bird people you can get.

Biggest flying animal men is (both insects and birds) swan men (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Swan_man). Albatross men (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Albatross_man) is 2nd biggest playable flyer.

A couple of unusual suggestions.

Giant Tortoise Man: just make sure you figure out the command for hiding in your shell.
Jumping Spider Man: jumping spiders are awesome little critters, plus having a bunch of arms is cool right?

play brown recluse spider man. if your doing modding, give im ability to swim when learned and the size of a human. but even without that its pretty fine. minus that at beggining nearly everything will weight you down to crawl. they are similiar to jumping spiders tho

However human crossbowmen and mayby other races too are perfectly capable of hitting you with a bolt even if your several z levels above them. Avoid setting them off.

Id like to put forward a suggestion of playing a female mosquito woman wrestler, a stealthly bear-hugger who draws in people into a lethal embrace, repeatedly bites them looking for latches and then using her (female only) special animalmen ability begins draining them of blood until they die.

1.Play Snake-Person.
2.Invest points into bite ability.
3.Poisonous profit

venom/poison bites arent quite cool cause it takes a lenght of time for em to kick in, and they are useless on larger targets

Yup. Animal men that can wear dwarf/elf/goblin-sized armor include aardvark men, cassowary men, cheetah men, ibex men, impala men, leopard men, mountain goat men, sponge men(?!), capybara men, wolf men, and emu men. Cougar and hyena men can wear armor sized for dwarves and humans. Jaguar men and wild boar men can wear human armor.

Plump helmet man must be difficult.

Since posting I've begun adventuring as a butterfly woman. I carry two swords, two shields, some coins, and the water pouches. My companions carry tons and tons of spare food because I am vegetarian and can't carry much.

Plump helmet man = topple statue, don't die of thrist and hunger.

Not sure how tough their flesh is, however.

Butterfly woman could carry harvested fruits bought from elves - they're really light and small, about the size of rings I think?

add OUTSIDER_CONTROLLABLE to serpent men(the evil ones, found in the underground.). their bite paralyzes their opponents. Not sure how well it works in adv mode, but I think it would.

I didn't know actual vegetarianism was in the game.
