Title: To Kill a Psion: Chapter Two: The Raid on the Queen's Tourney. IC thread.
Post by: My Name is Immaterial on June 29, 2014, 06:31:23 pm
OOC Thread. (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=139556.0)

This tale, like many others, starts in a tavern. Tonight, the Dirty Goat is completely full of inexperienced but hopeful adventurers, mercenaries, warriors and and every other name that up-starts use to identify their brand of violence for hire.

They are all here for one reason, and one reason alone: to join the Hunt. Hence, tensions are just as high as hopes. Nevertheless, a bard is doing his best to keep spirits light, a job made much easier by the copious amounts of booze everyone is consuming.

Next to your tankards sit your badge of admission to tomorrow's tourney. You were lucky to receive this; almost three thousand applicants were denied admission to the 800 head pool of contestants. You'll also have to be lucky to progress far; the first day of the tourney is made up of three tiers of harsh elimination rounds. You'll be pitted against a random opponent or opponents in a battle till surrender or unconsciousness. If you win, you'll do it again, against someone who did the same thing. If you're lucky enough to progress that far, you will have your final battle the next day. Victory there wins you a slot in the next phase.

Tomorrow, you will show up for placement depending on your party size. The options go from solo to a five man team, which also determines your opponents (solo fights solo, three fights three, etc.).

The question is, for most of you, do you do battle alone or do you find allies to stand beside you?

Ilev looked around the tavern, searching for those that he might join in a group with. Although he trusted his faith and his arm could see him though any mortal challenge faced, he was wary of the potential that he would have to face mages in the upcoming bouts. A mage on his own side would not go amiss, and someone who could watch his back could not possibly be a bad thing.

I'm going to look for anyone who looks like a magic user and also looks like they might be looking for companions. If I find one I'll go over and introduce myself as "Iley 'PathSeeker' Nuaugamkea."

Guilhayl indulges in his ale, presumably sitting next to Mutt.

I'm going to sit here and presumbly get boozed up.

Mutt sat next to his master, glowering into his beer. He glanced at Guilhayl.

"Is it going to be just us, or are you going to get some other flunkies?"

X'ithzol stands up, tucking his badge into one of the many pouches he wears, and moves out of the dark corner he was sitting in, moving through the crowd and suspiciously eyeing those he passes.

Iley Nuaugamkea:
You scan the crowd, and spot two men sitting at the bar. The one on the right may carry himself and a spear like a fighting man, but his hat is peaked like a mountain top from your distant homeland, indicating his status as a mage. The one on the left is too infirm to be a slave, regardless of the fact that he carries himself and dresses as one. The way he speaks is tinged with intelligence.

You tap the mage on the shoulder.
"Good day, good sir! I am Iley 'PathSeeker' Nuaugamkea, here for the tourney. Would you care to join forces in tomorrow's contests?"

Guihayl Aber:
A massive finger taps your shoulder, and you turn to see a Goliath's abdomen. When you look up, he offers his hand to shake.
"Good day, good sir! I am Iley 'PathSeeker' Nuaugamkea, here for the tourney. Would you care to join forces in tomorrow's contests?"

Mutt eyes the hulking goliath up and down. His face remains expressionless, though inside he's judging whether or not he could take the brute down if he reacted violently to knowledge of his psionhood.

Pathseeker smiled widely at Guilhayl.

"It is nice to meet you Guilhayl Aber, it is certainly a a comfort to have be teamed up with a magic user going into this tourney. And. Er. Mutt."

His smile ratcheted down a few notches as he considered Mutt.

"Er, he is your companion yes? Can he fight? Certainly someone to watch our backs could not be amiss."

He looks around the room at all the strange creatures crowding around.

"Do you suppose we should think about finding more companions? There is strength in numbers, although I suppose our enemies will also have numbers if we find more. What do you think?"

Guilhayl considers for a moment, takes a swig of ale, and speaks.

"Yes, I suppose Mutt could do battle. And yes, I think it would be a good idea to find more companions."

Guilhayl looks around for potential companions, but his eye is quickly drawn to an attractive young woman who, he noted, seemed to have the look of a user of magic. ((Looking at Aela here, ehehe.))

Aela looks a little nervous, being very obviously out of her element. She was roped in to coming here by her former adventuring party, (who, admittedly, she had met on the road two days prior) and unfortunately, they seem to have ditched her here in this rowdy bar full of bruisers and veterans, of which she is neither.
She swallows hard and steps up the counter. "Um... M-milk, please."

Aela Entaria:

The bartender glances at her with a raised eyebrow, and pulls down a small clay mug, filling it with milk. When he places it in front of you, you notice with despair that it's rather dirty.

As you look up in disgust, you see a man in a pointed hat staring at you from down the bar.

Well, not taking it would be disrespectful...
Suppress your disgust and take the mug. Straighten up, look confident. You were raised to keep your cool under pressure, raised to be a princess. Act like it.
Approach the man staring at you, he seems to be interested.
"Can I help you?"

"Hah. No need to be rude Mutt."

Pathseeker said as he took a step forward and then bowed lightly to the human woman who had approached them.

"Please excuse... my companion. And if I could offer, I believe my other companion, Guilhayl here, was assessing others whom we might approach to join us for the upcoming tourney."

He examined the women before him, she didn't look very strong, but maybe she could use magic?

"My name is Ilev "PathSeeker" Nuaugamkea by the way. If I could have the pleasure of your name Miss?"

Guilhayl tips his hat and smiles to Aela.

"Hello, ma'am. Guilhayl's the name, magic's the game. More magic? Sounds good to me. Welcome aboard!"

Guilhayl studies her for a moment, and notes that she doesn't have a spellbook, as is typical of wizards, which is what he believes a magic-user to be until proven otherwise.

"I... I see you don't have a spellbook there."

Guilhayl gulps uncertainly. He clearly has some sense of affection for this woman, but he never has been partial to sorcerers.

"Oh, yea, I've never needed one. Never really needed material components, either. Master Charon says I'm a 'Sorcerer,' but I just want to be a great wizard like him! This one ti- er..." There you go running your mouth again, girl. It's gotten you into trouble more times than you can count, hasn't it? You trail off and look embarrassed, like you've done something you shouldn't have and expect a scolding. You're out in the real world, now. No parents to scold you, no mentor to lecture you. On your own... but maybe not. These seem like a good enough sort. Go on, offer them your services.
"A-anyway, I've been looking for a new adventuring party, since the last one I was in kinda left me here. Do you guys need any help?"

"That sounds good to me Guilhayl. I've not much experience with Sorcerers, but another magic user can't be amiss could it? The three, er, four of us working together, who could stand against us eh? No one is who! We should be able to take this Tourney by storm and prove that we are the greatest fighters and best suited for this hunt."

Guilhayl smiles nervously, trying to conceal his inner battle between getting to know Aela and contempt for sorcerers.
"G... great."
Having heard that sorcerers only know a few spells that they can cast without books as opposed to memorizing spells from books, Guilhayl tries to bring that up as a conversation point. However, he has no clue how to phrase it, and decides to take a drink from his mug instead.

Sit down at the table. You've got a lot of words inside you that need to be put to paper. Get out the journal. You know the one; bound in leather with your name embossed on the spine. It's a thick book, but most of it is blank. You jot the words and share your day with its pages, absent-mindedly grabbing the mug next to you and taking a drink. Suddenly, you realize your mistake and spit it onto the floor. Nasty stuff, isn't it?

Iley Nuaugamkea, Mutt, Guilhayl Aber and Aela Entaria:
After a good night's sleep, or at least as good a sleep as you can get in this tavern, you arrive at the tourney, and sign up for a party of four. Told to return in an hour and a half, and given the names of your opponents, you decide to spend the time getting ready by trying to find out who they are. All you are able to learn is that they are all human, and that they prefer melee combat. ((Tawarochir, you can prepare your spells based on this.))
Then comes the time to do battle. You're in a large arena, sectioned into four smaller arenas, which are occupied by other groups preparing to face off. Your opponents are filling into your arena, and taking their places. A referee is reminding you of the rules.
Spoiler: Rules (click to show/hide)
On the other side, behind three rows of stone pillars, four humans, as you suspected, stand on large X's, painted on the floor. Three are wearing heavy armor, and two are carrying swords (1 and 2), while the other has a spear (4). The fourth has a crossbow held lightly in her hands, and is unarmored (3).

You will need to choose your positions. You may begin on any of the four X's.

As is his combat style, as it turns out. On the other side of your small arena, behind three rows of pillars, a young man in scale armor carries a sword and shield.
After reminding you of the rules, the referee blows a whistle, and the crowd goes wild.

((I'll start across from 4.))
You walk out into the arena and look around. All those cheering and jeering faces unsettle you; for once, you're on the other side of the stands. Look for the royalty, is it anyone you recognize? Even if you've never met them, you might recognize them from balls or foreign visits.
As for the task at hand, you've never really been in a fight with anyone besides your sparring master, have you? From what you've learned in combat manuals, it would make sense that your new friends would take on the melee fighters, being melee focused themselves. That leaves you with the crossbow girl.
A small tawny cat leaps onto your shoulder, calmly scanning the area. Aidan has been with you since you arrived at Charon's estate, and his presence settles your nerves. Finally, you take a deep breath, count to three, thenrun out into range and hit her with a Ray of Frost.

Mutt, Iley Nuaugamkea, Aela Entaria and Guilhayl Aber:

Aela glances at the stands. Spot: 1+0. The sun is bright today, hanging over the stands, blocking her from seeing the faces of those in the noble boxes.

The referee blows the whistle, and crowd goes wild.

Aela: 19
Sword A/1: 19
Guilhayl: 16
Mutt: 11
Ilev: 9
Spear/4: 6
Crossbow/3: 5
Sword B/2: 2

Aela dashes forward, taking cover behind a middle pillar, and a line of ice speeds towards the woman with crossbow, hitting her in the eye. (Crit and confirmed for 1 and 2 damage!)
In response, Sword A/1 dashes towards Aela.

...Hmmm. On the one hand, X'ithzol has a crossbow, and can likely outpace the human given his heavier armour. On the other hand, staying away while X'ithzol showers him with bolts may well lead to his death unintentionally, and being disqualified would defeat the purpose of being here. Also, the arena does not offer a great deal of room to maneuver. The pillar is too short to allow staying out of range of the sword on top of it, and there's no real room to hide. Not great.
Ok. Send a sling shot at this... Ralph.

Hmmm. Well, here's hoping this doesn't kill the guy.
X'ithzol drops his sling (free action), draws his Longspear (move), and Readies the Longspear against a Charge (standard) with a follow-up 5 foot step away from Ralph (free).
On second thoughts, that will almost certainly kill him in one hit, if it hits.
X'ithzol fires a sling shot (standard), drops his sling (free), and draws his Longspear (move). If Ralph charges, he'll have to go through the Lonspear Threatened Zone, so attack of opportunity, and I think the pillars will block any charge he can make anyway.

X'ithzol:
(Attack: 3+3) X'ithzol takes a swing at Ralph, but he can't quite get around a good angle around the pillar.
Ralph advances on his foe, but finds a spear buried in his chest. (AOO: 19+3, 5+3 damage) With a scream of anger, he pulls himself off it, and takes a swipe at X'ithzol (Attack: Miss).
Spoiler: Map (click to show/hide)

Mutt, Guilhayl Aber, Iley Nuaugamkea and Aela Entaria:
(Attack: 17+1, 3+1) With a twang, a bolt is buried in the leg of the swordsman in melee with Aela and Guilhayl.
Ilev dashes in between the two mages.

The other team begins to act in earnest, with the man with the spear jogging up the next pillar, and taking a swing in Ilev's direction. However, he doesn't have a clear shot, due to his ally being in the way (Attack: Miss).
A crossbow bolt, fired by the woman in the back, shatters on a stone pillar. It was hard to tell who it was even aimed at (Attack: Miss).
The final swordsman charges Ilev, and actually succeeds at a task that his allies had failed at (Attack: Success, 3 damage.)

In response to the melee, Aela casts Mage Armor on herself, with small movements, as to avoid notice by her foes (Concentration: 11+5+4 vs. 16, success.).

However, SwordA/1 takes a swing at the sorcerer, cutting deep into her flesh (Attack: success, but barely, 4 damage) (You actually have 5 hp, 4 at start, and +1 from Con. So you're not dead/dying.)

((Me?))
Yes, you. There are two enemies in range.

X'ithzol:
(Attack: 9+3) Another swing, another miss. The crowd is starting to grumble. They want more blood.
Ralph tries to statisfy them, and throws caution to the wind, advancing on X'ithzol. (Two AOO: 12+3, miss, 14+3, success, 6 damage) This was to be his downfall. He dropped his guard, and X'ithzol used that opportunity to hit him in the head, hard. He crumples to the floor, and the crowd goes wild. Healers dash into the arena, and stabilize the man.
Now we wait for Round 2 to begin.

Something snaps inside you as the blade pierces your flesh. The pain is a fire radiating through your body and giving you strength, and your body begins to move under its own power, firing a barrage of Magic Missiles at the swordsman.

Guilhayl Aber, Mutt, Iley Nuaugamkea and Aela Entaria:
(AOO: Fail) (Will: Fail, Success, Fail) Ducking under a sword swing, Guilhayl dashes to flank the opposing team's fighters, and, with a wave of his hands, drops a swordsman and the spearmen. (1 and 4)
(Attack: 16+1, success, 7+1 damage) Mutt, after shifting so that the Goliath's bulk does not interfere with his shot, takes aim at the last swordsman, and with a clean shot, drops him too.
(MM: 3+1 damage) Her original target on the ground, Aela slings her spell at the last foe. The force bolt connects, and the crowd goes wild.

Healers dash out with stretchers and quickly and efficiently spirit your foes away.

All:
As you file out, a rather shady looking man hands you each a bag of gold, saying it's your share of the bets. You can't help but notice that he's sitting on a very large chest and that he's not very happy to give you the money that he 'earned'.

Once again given your competitors' names and your time slots, you break for lunch, which you cover from your winnings, which you count to be almost 50 gold. Riding the adrenaline high, you skip the research of your opponents.
You may receive a single casting of Cure Light Wounds, if you want.

Guilhayl Aber, Mutt, Iley Nuaugamkea and Aela Entaria:
This time, only two fights are occurring at the same time. But you still focus on your foes, two heavily armored swordswomen (1 and 2), a robed and unarmed man (4), and another man with bulging biceps and almost no clothing, unless you count the giant axe, easily taller than most of you (3).
They seem to have made some changes to the arena.

Sure, I'll take a healing.

Anyway, I figure I might as well take one of the two middle squares and move up to that chokepoint by the pillar as soon as possible, I'll try to hold them there hopefully using the pillar as cover as you guys take them down? Hopefully this time I can stop them from from closing in melee with our people who can be taken out in one hit.

If no one objects, I'll take center left starting spot.

Guilhayl Aber, Mutt, Iley Nuaugamkea and Aela Entaria:
Aela takes the right most spot and Guilhayl takes the left most one.

Sword B/2 begins to move up the center, but stops at the end of a trench.
Mutt advances to take a shot at the axeman, firing a beam of flame from his finger, that leaves him exhausted. (Mutt receives 4 damage, To hit: 11+1, success, 4+1+1+1=7 damage)
In response, the lion-cloth clad man screams in rage, and vaults the first pit in a standing jump, but when he makes to jump the next one, you see him disappear into the pit, up to his. The crowd roars with laughter, and wielded by a warrior with a red face, the axe swings harmlessly at your legs.

(Longsword attack: 17+5, Success, 2+1+4 damage.)
With a vicious counterattack, you fell your final opponent, and thrust your weapons in the air to the cheers of the crowd. On your way out of the arena, the same man hands you four bags of 250 gold, this time with a toothy grin.
Healers wait to offer you healing, if needed.

X'ithzol:
An interesting contest. Both teams fought well, and, if memory serves you, that Goliath who delivered the final blow was the same you encountered in the bar last night.

With your purses heavy with gold and platinum, you have some time before night falls. A chance to get better equipped for tomorrow presents itself.

PathSeeker gladly accepts the healing offered, despite his joviality that was a pretty bad wound after all.

((By the way, despite growing up in what was basically a school dedicated to magic, my character is actually pretty clueless about magic. Would it make sense to just assume that I thought that Mutts attack was magic of some sort?))

Guilhayl hits the shops of the city (it is a city, right?) and picks up a heavy crossbow,-50 gold! 20 crossbow bolts,-2 gold! and buys two mules, 20 days' worth of feed, and a wagon, paying for their stabling for 2 days in advance..-52 gold and 2 silver!

Because transportation is an important factor. Also, assuming it's not the last time I'll get healed, I'll take some healing.

Shrugging, he turns and heads out again, looking for a cleric.
If the human can pay for their own healing afterwards, all the better. If not, well, gold for goodwill is usually a good trade, and especially so here where the Hunt seems to have decided that they don't want potential applicants dying.

(Gather Information: 20+4)
Directly across the street is an apothecary, fully stocked with CLW potions, at a 50% discount! What a coincidence!

A Very Nice Bartender:
Slamming the coins on the counter, and dashing back across the street, you administer the potion to the young woman. Her wounds knit closed, and she regains 3 HP.

X'ithzol:
You are about to leave to find a cleric, when the bartender almost collides with you, holding a red potion, which he feeds to the human. Hold on... isn't that the Goliath from last night? It is! Which means that you caught the end of this group's fight. There's the man in the pointy hat, the woman on the floor, and the chained one looking on from a distance.
What a coincidence!

You were dreaming about home, weren't you, girl? Not the one you were happily living in nearly a week ago, but the one before that. The big fancy home on a hill with the pointy roofs and pretty greenery. That life's far behind you. Look at where you are now. Face down on the floor of a tavern, leaking your lifeblood all over the floor. But what's this? Someone's helping you up, feeding you a potion.
You're not alone, girl; You've got friends. Friends who actually care, unlike that spoony Bard, Valan, and the rest of his party...
Aidan circles your foot, purring. He seems to be glad you're alright. You pick him up and place him on his usual perch, before speaking to your saviours, "Erm... Th-thanks. I don't think anyone's been that nice to me since... Well, since I was a little girl."

"Many have come to the hi... to the city, hoping to join the Hunters. Traders here to sell to crowds, soldiers here to guard traders. Those-without-hives, bandits?, would not come near so many, and no Human swiftclaw able to sneak up on my kind would waste their skill stealing from roaming travellers. Small-shelter I have, and I have spent many nights nesting on skywide floor. Eight silver for shelter and meals, a fair deal?"

You definitely heard that, and while you know it's a horribly rude thing to say, it seems like he means well. You shoot him an offended look, but don't say anything further. X'ithzol:
In the morning, you enter a radically different arena than what you fought in yesterday. The entire floor is covered in dense desert brush, with a few cacti in their midst. From the desert scene rises two hills at opposite ends of the arena, along with two large stone columns closer to the center. From the top of the hills and columns, wooden planks extend, forming narrow bridges.
From the stands, you hear a man's voice boom out. "For our next solo combat, we have Flosi, The Very Magnificent versus Sithsol!"
You climb the hill to where a referee is standing. "No killing, no touching the crowd, got it? Good." On the other side of the arena, you see Flosi ignoring his own referee to wave at the crowd and flash them a toothy smile. They cheer in response.
"Well, Dave, it looks like we've got an obvious crowd favorite today."
"Yes, his flashy style went over well with the audience yesterday. This fight should be interesting, Larry."
"I totally agree. Both contestants will have to be very careful. If Flosi isn't careful, he'll go down quickly. We know from his first fight yesterday that he can't take a hit well."
"Very true. But if C'ithxol gets too close, things will get hot for him, really fast."
"I'm going to have to stop you, Dave. Looks like the referee is ready to start the match!"

X'ithzol: 13
Flosi: 3
You have won initiative, and it is your turn.

Ilev Nuaugamkea, Aela Entaria, Guilhayl Aber and Mutt:
You are met with the same arena: two hills, two columns, and planks connecting them.
On the other side, you see a rather monstrous crew gearing up to fight. A huge orc has an equally large axe over his shoulder, while, about 6 feet down, a kobold has pulled out a shortbow, and is talking to a half orc, who is standing next to a goblin, testing the balance on his morningstar.
"Ladies and Gentlemen! For one of our last contests today, we have Ilev Nuaugamkea, Aela Entaria, Guilhayl Aber and Mutt versus..."
"Versus Bork (Orc), Lextix (Kobold), Krani (Half-orc) and Rag (Goblin). You know Dave, this could go either way."
"Why do you say that, Larry?"
"Well, we have one team that are basically a boulder, smearing everything in its way. When Bork and Rag go to work, they don't leave anyone standing afterwards. But, on the other side of the arena, we have a team that can wield arcane magic like none other I've seen in this competition."
"Looks like the match is starting, Larry!"
Damnit, they didn't even give you time to choose positions. Eh. You have to play the cards you're dealt.
Bork runs down the hill, charging across the battlefield, while Krani braves the plank bridges.

"Perhaps we should adopt a strategy in this one? With three magic users a nice defensive location might be best, so that I may position myself between you three and the enemy and then you all can obliterate them? The pillar is a attractive choice, but I'm not sure if the bridge could actually hold my weight. If we stood on this hill top and waited for them to come to us it might open more angles of attack, but it would hopefully gain us the high ground advantage and possibly split them up, that Orc fellow looks like he will reach us long before his allies do, and if we can turn this into a one vs four and a three vs four instead of just a single four vs four, well, for all the better. What do you three think?"

((That awkward moment when you realize that you've forgotten to update your game for a few days. Sorry guys.))
X'ithzol:
((Attack: 20, Confirming, 7+1-2, Unconfirmed, 5 damage.))
You fire off your bolt and look away from your opponent to reload, when you hear the announcers take a sharp breath in. Staying focused, you pull back the string, and aim down the sights for another shot, but your target's gone.
"We're getting confirmation... Yes, that's a total knockout."
"Wow. Have you ever seen a fight that short?"
"Never... Looks like the crowd was hoping for more of a show."
Indeed. The crowd's starting to grumble, and you leave quickly, giving them a quick wave.
The man handing out winnings greets you with polite applause, and hands you an even heavier bag. You notice that he's wearing considerably nicer clothes than yesterday.
"That was some mighty fine shooting, friend."
Right before you finally leave the arena, you are stopped by a young man, dressed in regal looking clothes adorned with a crest of somesort.
Giving you a small velvet pouch, he says "Her Majesty, the Queen of Tomann, sends her thanks for helping her win her bet against the Baron of Hadvul."

Another bolt flies towards the half-orc, this one hitting them in the chest.
"Well, that looks like match. Lextix can't achieve a win alone."
"Ah, yes, he's throwing down his weapons now."
The little kobold starts to stomp offcourt and the crowd begins to cheer. You exit, and the same man, albeit cleaner and better dressed than yesterday, hands you your winnings.

Right before you finally leave the arena, you are stopped by a young man, dressed in regal looking clothes adorned with a crest of somesort.
Giving you each a small velvet pouch, he says "Her Majesty, the Queen of Tomann, sends her thanks for helping her win her bet against the Baroness of Havenshire."

Guilhayl had been approached by the messenger while admiring his new crossbow, nicknamed Heartspear now, in the inn, and accepted the letter without a word. After reading it silently, he seems rather excited.

"Ah, excellent. A summons for our efforts."

"But wait... mandatory? Next to the arena? Possibly a devious trap to test our guile and skill. No matter, I shall attend."

Make sure I re-prepare Sleep and prepare Daze, Resistance, and Detect Poison before going to the dinner. Leave my food, water, and rope in the room at the inn.

For reference, it is around 3 in the afternoon. The dinner is scheduled for 8 at night. I'll be counting down your time.

Ilev Nuaugamkea:
The innkeeper directs you to a nice bathhouse about 10 minutes away. Judging from the decor, it's not too fancy, but not too expensive at the same time. The handpainted sign in the lobby tells you that use of the bath areas is 5 sp (toiletries included), a steam bath is another 1 sp, laundering of clothes while you bath is another 1 sp, and a massage is 3 sp. There are a few different doors, which include Men, Women and Mixed Gender.
You have about 4:45 left.

Expect a fade to steamy.

Ah, c'mon, girl. You can afford to treat yourself nice tonight. Especially with all that's happened.
You pay for the full package, except for the massage; seems a little too much. As you lay back in the bath, you think back to the nobles you saw in the stands, and how influential they were in your childhood. You remember how much you would look up to the Queen, her elegance and regal bearing always seemed to be something to strive for in life. You also remember how the new Baroness was practically family, and how your parents were always trying to arrange playdates, despite the fact that she was 8 years older and always thought of you as an annoying little cousin. Those memories seem so far off now. So much has changed.
Aidan snaps you out of your daydreams. Had you forgotten how long you'd been in the bath?

Mutt himself merely saved his money, meditating to restore his focus and power for the coming day.
As much as he would never use magic himself, he was no fool - magic items would be useful, and weak as he was, a bag of holding was something he wanted.

Ilev Nuaugamkea:

There, the smith puts down her latest craft to speak to you. "A Great Scimitar, huh? Made one once to pass the final journeyman's test. It's been a while, but I can try. Come back in two and a half hours, and I'll have it ready for you.

Ilev Nuaugamkea:
The local temple is decent sized stone tower, filled with a permanent chill. The Jasidin priest you speak with, a Karuth Michael, tells you that it's due to the fact that a third of the temple's purpose is to act as a morgue.
"In this city, temples are tax exempt and supported financially by the government if they provide two non-religious services. We house an extensive law library and provide free corpse collection, treatment and disposal, depending on the deceased's wishes."
After a tour, you assist in funerary rites for a deceased commoner. Once his spirit has been laid to rest, you excuse yourself.
Back at the smithy, your new weapon is sitting on a cooling rack when you come in. A young man hurriedly wraps it in cloth for you.
"That'll be 250 gold, if you please, sir."

Aela Entaria:
In your room, you lie back on your bed, feeling the rush of a new spell warm your blood and send shivers down your spine. But what is it?
Choose a cantrip, and add it to your spells known.

Pathseeker felt at piece after doing his duties to his god, like he was more connected then ever before, he felt a bit of the divine spark within him. With a spring in his step he went to the weapon smith to pick up his weapon. He was surprised that they would sell such a fine looking weapon so cheaply, but he gratefully accepted the weapon. He then took it back his room at the inn, testing the balance. It was quite a bit different then most one handed swords he had felt, although he was comfortable using it two handed, one handed would take some work to get used to.

I'll go back to the inn and and practice a bit with my sword as I wait for the tournament to start. I'll also be starting the training to become proficient with my new weapon.

The Goliath thinks for a moment on this question before replying.

"I suppose I don't have some grand reason for this. I'm out to see the world, do what I can in it, learn what I can. The Psionic hunt seems like as good a thing to take part in for now as anything. Gives me a direction in my wandering, and allows me to do some good for the world."

Pathseeker then considers.

"So why are you here? You don't seem particularly happy most of the time. But you travel with Guilhayl all the same."
Title: Re: To Kill a Psion: Chapter One: The Queen's Tourney. IC thread.

Mutt shrugged in response to Pathseeker's question. "I'm sure you'll find that out sooner or later."

"So do you think psions are evil, then? They deserve to be killed?"
Title: Re: To Kill a Psion: Chapter One: The Queen's Tourney. IC thread.
Post by: Criptfeind on September 14, 2014, 10:06:34 am
"Are all psions evil and deserve to be killed? Like most sources of evil in the world I would assume that there are shades of grey, even in psions. A psion might not be a bad person themselves, but if they continue to play with a evil force and disrupt society then they should be stopped. I am not sure if I would go so far as to call them evil. Careless, selfish, childish. Maybe those could be better descriptors. At any rate, they should certainly be stopped. Death might seem like a harsh punishment, but it is the law, and these people know they are putting society in danger and what the consequences of that is.

So. Are psions evil? Probably not always. Do they deserve to be killed? Most of the time they probably do."

Mutt managed to keep the venom out of his voice.
"I... see. What if they used their psionics for a good cause? Protecting the weak, the innocent, slaying the evil? Should they be punished for using psionics to do so?"
Title: Re: To Kill a Psion: Chapter One: The Queen's Tourney. IC thread.
Post by: Criptfeind on September 14, 2014, 10:39:45 am
"It's a interesting moral quandary. If I was personally put into a situation where I had to make that call, it would have to depend on a lot of factors. If the pison was immediately protecting people at the time, I wouldn't try to stop the psion. And, in the immediate aftermath of whatever heroics they took part in... It's a harder question, but I don't think I could bring myself to punish someone immediately. Although perhaps that would be wrong of me I would likely let them go. If they continued to use psionics after the fact? In that case they should be stopped. Doing a evil action to further a good cause does not give carte blanche on future evil actions."

Hmm. A brain in this puppet, but he dances on strings nonetheless.

"Alright, final question, Pathseeker. What if a psionic only ever used it for good causes? Should they be stopped?"

Title: Re: To Kill a Psion: Chapter One: The Queen's Tourney. IC thread.
Post by: Criptfeind on September 14, 2014, 11:44:10 am
The Goliath shrugs.

"It seems likely that they should stop. But for the most part I have already answered this. I would not stop a psion in the midst of using his power for good, at least not for larger good like saving people, and although it would be a large moral quandary I doubt I could bring myself to kill or capture one just for using his powers for good. So, I suppose practically speaking if a psion only used his power for good, there really wouldn't be a time when I could bring myself to punish that pison. Maybe I would heavily encourage them to change. I might feel a responsibility to make absolutely sure that they never used their powers for ill. But would I personally stop them? I don't think I would."

He thinks for a moment more.

"Although I don't think I would blame anybody or any place that would make them stop. Hah, and perhaps punish me as a accomplice as well if it came to that! At any rate. This has been quite a interesting conversation, and I thank you, but unless there are more questions that you have, I think I must take my leave for the moment."

Assuming mutt doesn't have anything more to ask, I'll go up to my room.

After you preperation, you make your way to the dinner, where the guard glares at those who try to take in weaponry, and confiscates any weapon that is not a quarterstaff, dagger or gauntlet. "You'll get it back after."

Inside is a long table, seating 50 to each side. At its head stands a middle aged gentlemen in a dress uniform heavily decorated with medals. Once  most of the 100 winners are seated, he speaks in a booming voice, obviously enhanced by magic.
"Welcome, champions. I am Huntmaster Logan Trenar. You have all fared well in the last two days, but your trials are not over. You were able to best your foes in a show of strength, but the Hunt requires equal parts brains and brawn from our members. Tomorrow's contest will be your chance to demonstrate your strategic abilities. And so, it is my pleasure to introduce my ex-companion, Eyvind Hallenor, the designer of your next challenge."

From thin air, a short human appears, leaning back in one of a few chairs at the head of the table. With a grin and a flourish, he jumps to his feet.
"Ladies, gentlemen, since you're assuredly hungry, and I've promised a very pretty girl a visit, I'll be brief." After a quick pause for laughter, he continues, "The Hunt's targets will not always fight you in the open field, and your job will not always be to kill everyone. My little test will simulate that. Two teams of will fight in a Capture-the-Flag style game. The winner will continue, as you might expect. However, only one team will be capturing the flag. The other will be defending it. Each team will have five minutes to plan, ((24 hours in IRL terms)) and then the attacking team must retrieve the defending team's flag in thirty minutes. The same basic rules apply: no killing, blahdeblahdeblah. You get the gist. May the odds be in your favor!"

And a bow, he vanishes once more. Trenar clears his throat.
"Before we eat, there is a little more business to attend to. The majority of you did not register as five person teams, so we have arranged teams for you all. I will now read off the teams... please stand when your name is called..."
His words blur together, until you hear your names called out: "Mutt, X'ithzol, Aela Entaria, Guilhayl Aber and Ilev Nuaugamkea."

You all stand. Three humans, a goliath and a person with wrappings covering their entire body. By total coincidence, you are all sitting together. I will leave the specifics up to you.

A delicious, if simple, meal of smoked trout and rice, with a side salad is brought out and laid before you.

The next day, you show up together at the staging zone. After waiting for a few minutes, you are called off into a building to the side by a tournament official. She leads you into a room with a rather large table in the middle, which is likely used as a meeting room normally. The table is bare, except for two scroll cases. The woman gestures for you to sit, and checks some notes on a clipboard.
"Our routine scans have detected the presence of a person with psionic capabilities among your team. On the table are two scrolls of Detect Psionics. To be able to continue in the competition, you have to identify the psionic. Their fate is up to you. Good luck."
With that, she leaves.

((I will be handling Taw's character for a few days.))
Guilhayl's face becomes pained for a moment, then settles into one of concern and picks up a scroll and studies its writings.
(Spellcraft: 7+7, Failure.)
Frustrated, he casts Read Magic, and it becomes clear that these are scrolls of Detect Psionics.

Pathseeker shuffled uncomfortably before sitting down at a corner of the table. Uneasily gazing upon his previous allies.

"That is... Unpleasant to hear...

What do you think they meant by 'Their fate is up to you?' Will we not get kicked out of this tournament no matter what we do? Or do our fates rest on this as well?"

"I imagine they meant you could attempt to murder them or not. If we were going to be kicked out the tournament, not doubt we would have been already. Same as if they wanted the psion dead."

Quickly, he reached out and picked up the remaining scroll, holding it tightly in his grip. The mask and hat hid his emotions well, even as his face was stoic, but a tight coil of tension was inside. If he had to, he'd kill them all, though he doubted he'd make it out alive if it came to that.

Damn his fate.

Pathseeker sucked in his breath and stood back up.

"Murder? That seems like it would be going quite far, especially since all of you, excepting this new man, are my comrades by battle already. I have no wish to fight any of you. Although I can understand being upset at this secret being kept, certainly if we will be allowed to continue in this tournament and they will not be killing anyone there is no reason not to let this deception past and try to work together?"

((Tawarochir steals his character back from the GM!))

Guilhayl snaps slightly more awake. He had barely gotten enough sleep last night.

"Oy, Zol, I'm no psion. Mutt's merely a fairly good friend of mine. Anyway... they did simply leave it at 'their fate is up to you,' so I, for one, say we keep the psion on our team. They might let it slide. We at least should take a shot."

Patherseeker sits back and sighs, shrugging a bit.

"Well. It would make some things add up if Mutt was a pison. Some things at least. And yes, it appears that we won't be forced to kill the psion. Although I'm not sure what they will do with him or her. It's a worrisome. Although perhaps one way out, would be if one of us volunteers to register as a minder and take command of the pison, then the hunt shouldn't have any objections... At least ones that they will air out loud, we might need to watch for knifes in the dark... Although putting that much power over ones own life in the hands of someone else is... A distressing idea. I doubt any of us, excepting perhaps Mutt and Guilhayl, have known each other long enough for that type of trust to foster I would think."

He thinks for a bit. Then leans forward and taps his finger on the table.

"Although to be honest, putting aside suspicions against Mutt for the moment. Should we just clear out the Gargun in the room? We have not fought with this Exthzol by our side, we really know nothing about him. And to be honest my friend. You look the type. He seems like he might be a even more reasonable first guess then Mutt."

Initiative opposed to Initiative: 10+1 vs. 8+2, Success for Aela.

Alea grabs the scroll from Guilhayl, and quickly casts it on herself. The spell seems to have been modified to have a visual and auditory element, as a cone of light projects from her forehead and it emits a quiet beeping sound. When she turns her head, it follows. When it settles on Mutt, the cone of light turns red and the beeping becomes loud and harsh. A monotone voice bleats out the verdict.
"PSIONICS DETECTED."

"No. There's nothing inherently evil about psionics themselves. Or psions, either. And it doesn't matter anyway. I don't have a choice."
He made a gesture towards his forehead.
"For the terrible crime of saving a child-" his voice dripped venom "-I was branded with a mark of justice and thrown into a dark cell for over a year. I forget how long, exactly, because I couldn't even see the sun to mark the passage of days. I rotted in there until the wizard there-" and a savage jerk with his thumb pointed at Guilhayl "-won me in a raffle. So I'm bound to serve him, or my Mark activates. I could only harm you with my psionics if you were attempting to harm me first or Guilhayl ordered me to."

He snorted. " I suppose I should be grateful I wasn't just executed for my terrible deed." It might not be wise to be so venomous, but he was out of the danger zone. They hadn't attacked him. He didn't believe the thing in wraps, quite. It didn't seem too... academical.

But why" Pathseeker continues in a puzzled voice "did you two hide this from us? If Guilhayl is already your legal warder then, ethical issues aside, it seems like you could have simply revealed this to us, so that me, and Aela, did not have to go though this rigmarole. But, I suppose you must have had your reasons...

As it stands, with Guilhayl as your legal warder, and if the story you told is true, I have no issues with continuing to work with you two."

It’s been a week punctuated by rather boring trails of combat prowess. Despite the challenges you’ve faced, you have risen above them, raking in prize money and making a name for yourself. Today, your team of five stands with the other four teams that survived the not-very-hardships in your way to glory. The Huntmaster is giving a rousing speech before the final contest, but it’s just for the audience. You try and keep your mind clear, and focused on the task at hand. In the forest that you stand before, is a powerful psionic who the hunt has let loose for this event. This will be your hardest battle yet, but your weapons are sharp and your minds are fresh.
The speech is coming to a crescendo, as indicated by stagehands, and you steel yourself for what is to come. Bellowing at the top of his lungs, Trenar shouts: “Let the Hunt… BEGIN!”. As the sound of his voice hits your ears, your legs begin to churn, and you race by the Huntmaster with the other teams, unfazed by the fireworks going off behind you.
Hold on… the fireworks weren’t planned until the Hunt had been completed.
That’s not a cheer coming up from the crowd…
Those are screams.
When the first fireball lands in your path, you dive for cover behind the stage, just in time to see Guilhayl and Trenan, along with many others, wrestling in the clutches of strange, four armed, one legged yellow beasts, before they all vanish.
Above the crowd, who were here to see some nice, manufactured bloodshed, float figures who are firing bolts of energy indiscriminately into the crowd, their purple robes glowing from the blasts of fire, electricity and freezing cold directed at the citizenry below.
In cover next to you is a figure in a dirty-sand-colored cloak, seemingly staring intently at an ancient compass. It points to the stage that you cower behind.
Behind you, the screaming of the crowd vanishes in an instant, like someone hit a universal mute button. A voice pierces the deafening silence, calm as a pond on a windless night, and as jubilant as a baby taking its first steps. “Ladies! Gentlemen! Rejoice, for today, the Hunt’s tyrannical inquisition ends at our hands! Welcome to the new world!”
In a spray of ectoplasm, a skeletal, beaked hound appears in front of you. Now is the time to decide what story you will tell of this day.

On the outside, a small shriek, falling back for a moment before steadying herself, an entirely different look in her eye than just seconds ago. Her hands move almost instantly, whispering an incantation, before a Spray of Color erupts from her fingertips in the direction of the hound in front of her. On the inside...

Horrible things happening all around. Explosions, people dying, some being snatched out of thin air. A horrible monster appears in front of you, and then... Darkness. You struggle to see, but it's like there's a haze all around you. You feel like you're moving, but can't tell how, or why. Sound is quiet, muted, as if underwater. Dazzling colors break through the haze, but only for a moment, before plunging you back into the dark haze. You feel like you should be scared, but the haze is almost calming. Struggling to regain control only makes you feel weak and ineffectual. You almost feel as if you're trapped in your own mind, only able to watch on through a thick haze, as something else controls you.

The gods be damned, what in the hells where these psions doing?

The somewhat less powerful psion snarled and yanked down his dust mask, coughing a glob of ectoplasm into his hand. With a grunt, he tossed the weightless substance to splatter onto the creature.

As much as Pathseekers instincts called from him to take to the air and immediately strike down the flying villains, he tempered his actions with the knowledge that if he left there might not be anyone to stand between the dog creatures and the crowds behind him. Flaring out his wings he launched himself at the dog creature, pulling out his swords and hoping to finish it off quickly!

Charge at the hound and attack with a Great Scimitar.

The dusty, robed figure looks up from his compass, eyes burning, then pockets it somewhere, hefts a massive shield, and draws a shining curved blade from a belt sheath, then moves purposefully towards the place where the skeletal hound appeared, bastion raised towards the oncoming psions. It raises its weapon towards the hound, its eyes and a silver amulet around its neck glowing with an eerie blue light, and intones, "You serve me now..." in a rasping, peculiarly hollow voice, as though it were being carried in on the breeze.

Draw khopesh, move towards the party. Rebuke attempt on the hound.

The beast had simply been growling at you when you release your wrath upon it.

Aela shoots blindingly bright prismatic colors from each of fingers. They strike the beast where its eyes would be, if it had eyes.
Will save: Failure! Blinded for 3 rounds and Stunned for 4 rounds!

Mutt's ectoplasm catches the hound's heels and it almost bowls over.
Attack: 8+2 > AC, Success!

Pathseeker charges the beast, swinging massive scimitars like a tempest.
Attack: 12+7, 15+7, Hit! Hit! 6+4+4 damage! 2+1+4 damage! 23 damage!

Sultan, channeling the divine power within him, reaches out across the distance to take control of the undead mind, but cannot sense anything. The attempt fails.
Rebuke attempt: Ineffective?!

The teleporting Huntmaster from the feast appears behind the beast, and stabs its ectoplasmic body, which explodes in a burst of goo. To the few potential hunters that are still in shock, or engaged with attackers, he shouts "The psion must have opened a portal to bring this force in! Cut off their escape route! Find the psion and kill him! We will handle this attack! GO! FINISH THE HUNT!"
He disappears in a small puff of smoke,

With the immediate threat in front of him dealt with, Pathseeker looked to the skies and the men who were attacking the crowd from above. Clearly this was the reason he had so suddenly been given wings. His resolve firmed, he dropped his excess baggage, gave his wings a experimental flap or two, and then launched himself into the sky at them.

Pathseeker will fly up towards the figures attacking the crowd, if possible, attack them with twf, if necessary, charge. Use smite evil if I can get a hit in. If the figures look like they are just wearing robes without some type of magical protection or without armor underneath, I'll power attack for two.

((It should be noted that I will let TWFers use TWFing as a standard action. NO, GUY CANNOT DO THIS, REMUTHRA.))

Pathseeker, seeing that the teleporting man had grabbed the psion on stage and was in the process of stabbing him in the gut, swerved around that conflict, heading for one of the psions hovering above the crowd.
To Hit: 17+7+2, 20+7+2  (Confirm: 5+7+2, Confirmed!) Damage: 1+1+4, 1+5+4+1+1+4 for a total of 22 damage.
You practically scissor the poor wretch in half, and their corpse hits the grounds a few moments later with a sickening thump. The nearby attackers somehow hear this over the sounds of chaos, and turn to face you, but the nearest one gets a face full of Magic Missiles (2+1, 4+1 damage). The offended psion spits out some teeth and blood and settles into a battle stance.

Wheeling around in the air Pathseeker orientated himself towards the next floating man, hurdling himself though the air at him!

Pathseeker will fly towards the figures, if possible, attack them with twf, if necessary, charge. If the figures look like they are just wearing robes without some type of magical protection or without armor underneath, I'll power attack for two.

Mutt hides underneath the stage.
Pathseeker flight continues to the psion who had been blasted by the Magic Missile.
Attack rolls: 12+1, 4+1, Success, Failure. Damage: 4+4+4+2 damage.
One sword cuts deep and the psion cries out in pain. The man goes slack and begins to slowly sink to the floor.
The two more nearby psions fire off blasts of energy at the party, at least on the actively fighting members of the party, namely Aela and Pathseeker.
Pathseeker Reflex Save: 4+4, Failure for Half Damage. 13 damage taken.
Aela Reflex Save: 19+2, Success for Half Damage. 6 damage taken.
It is Aela's turn.
