Question about iconic associations
« on: June 18, 2012, 07:15:37 pm »

I'm working on designing a website, but I'm at an impasse brought on by myself accidentally repeating an image. On every page of the site is...
Spoiler: This. (click to show/hide)
Each symbol links to a different section of the website, but I accidentally used the same image twice. The top-left and the bottom-center icons represent a blog and other forms of writing, respectively. I originally had the piece of paper as the blog symbol, but it fits better with the second position. Does anybody have any ideas about what would be recognizable for a blog icon? I can't think of anything that wouldn't be conflicting with the second one.

Yeah, a computer monitor would make sense. Alternately you could change the writing icon into a book.

Question: What is the gear? Do you build steampunk robots?

The laptop screen could work, but I'd have to make it substantially different from the right-most icon, which is for programming.

It's for engineering in general. I tried to make a Dwemer-esque steam-powered robot a while back, but it didn't work out. Maybe someday I'll actually make a working version of that, but that's not likely to happen any time soon.

Ah, the joys of mystery meat navigation. I hope you at least have tooltips for those, and preferably actual links somewhere.

When you mouse over them, a panel below the image says where it links to.
