That's because they're usually just gender polls. This one is rather better than that.
Preferred sock color: black, so you never have to match

I'm almost done with a bachelor's degree in sociology and have never come across this definition, which I'm going to assume is an older one not much in use anymore. The models I've seen in my textbooks are closer to the ones on Wikipedia, which assign social class based on a consideration of education, income, and net worth. FYI, the contemporary concept of the underclass is more about a lack of steady employment, education, and privileges than it is about crime and welfare. I grew up underclass, nearly homeless, without constant access to basic "necessities" like electricity, water, heat, food, clothing, shelter, and education, but my parents were never on welfare (which takes resources they didn't have, like transportation, and more contact with the government than they wanted, because when you raise kids like this and want to keep them you don't tell the government) and while they did engage in some criminal activity, they were the sort of ordinary crimes most college kids have engaged in at one time or another, and had cleaner records than most middle class people I know.
For the record, social class is determined in this fashion, based on employment;
Lower working class; unskilled manual labour
Working class; semi-skilled manual labour
Upper working class; skilled manual labour
Lower middle class; unskilled non-manual labour
Middle class; semi-skilled non-manual labour
Upper middle class; skilled non-manual labour
Upper class; aristocracy.
Class is determined by the head of the household, who is always the oldest working male in the household, unless there are no working males, in which case the oldest working female determines the class of the household. Wives, children and senescent relatives have their social class determined by the head of the household. Members of the household who leave and become independent retain their social class until they become employed for the first time, at which time their social class becomes based on their mode of employ; if they retain home, their social class snaps back.
Although it post-dates this system of identification of social stratification, the 'underclass' is a term used to identify those 'employed' in crime. It has also been used to refer to households in which no member has ever worked (those that subsist on government handouts) however this use of the term is incompatible with the system because the eldest male in the household determines the class for the whole household (until anyone in the household gets a job) and he inherits his class from his ancestors.
This is all from memory though from my Sociology GCSE, in which I got a C. I couldn't find which sociologist invented this system.
Buttery_mess' metric
Any two of these things would be enough for me to google stalk all of you down to your exact name, address, credit card providers and possibly your social security number as well. :P
Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation. That's some prime signature material right there. Mind if I do?
Um, no. You really have no idea how many white 20-something students there are in the world, do you?
Also, best of luck tracking my social security number down.
10 ladies so far. Yup, I counted. Honestly I expected a more even distribution. Apparently we're more likely to enjoy this kind of 'intellectual' gameBut you may be less likely to then go on to poke your head above the parapets by actively joining the forum and then actually shouting "And I'm a girl!" in a thread such as this. Don't give up hope. (Should I also wish the same sentiment to all the boys here, possibly hoping for a hook-up on the off-chance? ;) )
Date of birth, place of birth, and a little guess work and actually, yeah, you can figure out someone's SSN. (Year -> middle two digits. Place -> first three. Last four -> assigned sequentially)

Place of birth isn't (that I noted) mentioned much here at all. Place of current residence might have been, or in other threads, and I suppose might still apply as the other when it comes to a number of the younger bods, but once at/beyond Higher Education age that's less likely, and you can't assume that they went to local places or even that the slightly older ones have at least temporarily returned.

True, it isn't. :)
I was just pointing out that your SSN isn't supposed to be secret, as all of the information necessary to figure it out is public information (in fact, the last four are most often left visible when it's "stared-out" or the four asked for for various things).
I have absolutely no clue what a social security number is for, anyway. What do you guys use it for?
What is my last name?Smith!
For Australia, "Tax File Number" is the equivalent, as I understand it. Niccolo might or might not have one, though, if I understand the implementation, and depending on personal circumstances.I have absolutely no clue what a social security number is for, anyway. What do you guys use it for?
It was supposed to be a number that you'd use to identify yourself in order to pay taxes and to track individuals' accounts within the Social Security program.

Argyle... Steve Argyle, perhaps? ???
Oohhh, right. Similar to a TFN. A little different, though, since we only use our TFNs for two purposes; paying our taxes and filling out tax-related forms. Well, that's the only use for it I've found. I mean, you're welcome to steal it and pay my taxes for me...
