Name: Jim J. Barkley
Species: Canis lupus familiaris, var. hyperintelligent Great Dane
Job: Holistic Security Expert
Age: 9
Description: A grizzled yet energetic gray-coated Great Dane descended from a long line of thoroughbred cybernetically enhanced, genetically tailored canines, Jim J. Barkley is for all intents and purposes a large dog, if one that's noticeably more clever than an average person and able to speak by virtue of a thought-to-speech module installed in his throat (assisted by the regular dog noises he can naturally make for the twofold noble purpose of making him sound cartoonishly approachable and give no indication of how intelligent he genuinely is).

Background: For the past 7 years of his life after graduating from one of Milwaukee 5's Integrated Police Institute Jim has worked a large number of jobs - first he did a spell in the K-9000 police unit he was assigned to after graduation before being quietly let go for certain disagreements with the authorities, leading him to his true passion - private security. Specifically, holistic private security, or the business of explaining to customers why it is absolutely integral that Jim and a variety of ultimately disposable partners he keeps misplacing would be best able to provide you security by being off the premises ('working behind the scenes', if you will) and, indeed, off the planet they were hired on. You never know what kind of insights with regards to safety of a noted figure or installation you can come upon when pursuing a matter that, to unskilled eyes, would seem entirely unrelated. That's what makes Jim the expert, you know - he's got a nose for these things.

For instance, right now Jim is busy guarding the life and livelihood of the High King of the asteroid Helsinki-1991 after he started developing the suspicion that his claim on exotic Tzo crystals was going to make him a target for people such as his Tylflgrlian ex-wife, his Glarzanian former partners (one of which he suspects might be sleeping with his ex-wife) or that shady guy from Van Diemen's Planet who led him to buy the asteroid to begin with. This would appear to be an open-and-shut kind of case to the untrained security person, but Jim is certain that the matter requires nothing less than a space journey to parts unknown to get to the bottom of the risks and parties involved. And, of course, a generous advance to help his partner Ralph Rabbit keep his office going and cover travel expenses.

Attributes:
Strength: 4
Constitution: 4
Dexterity: 4
Intelligence: 6
Fortitude: 4
Luck: 6

Traits:
No Hands: look, ma, genetic modification will only take you so far. Jim does have double the number of legs, however.
Cyberhound: all the incredible powers dogs are known for (mostly smelling things good, biting, digging holes and making noise) but enhanced further with the eldritch science and technology of the IPI!
Man's Best Friend: inherently trustworthy and liked by humans everywhere.

Skills:
Ex-Cop: familiar and proficient with high-tech government police work.
Security Expert: knowledgeable and skilled in the use of surveillance and security technology both planetside and in space.

Special Skills:
Holistic Insights: for something that looks like completely random chance, Jim has a shockingly good track record with serendipity.

Belongings:
Voice-Activated Claw Drone: it's not quite a pair of hands, but it does serve as one hand in a pinch.
(Anti)Bugging Tools: all the tools you need to make a solid enough bug out of consumer electronics and/or check for bugs in your vicinity.

Name: Edwin 'Starbeard' Tex
Species: Space pirate (They are born with big beards. They can survive in space a little bit more than the common human.)
Job: Space Pirate Pirate
Age: Probably arround 30 or 40, you can't ask him because he can't count. And he can't talk either.
Description: Stout and robust, bald and with a enormus black beard. His left eye is covered by a black eyepatch and has a gold tooth.

Background: A common space pirate. He has raided multiple ships and stations across the universe just like any other space pirate. Until he suddenly lost his voice, fortune and luck for stealing cursed gold from a cursed space temple, which then caused the loss of ship, his old crew and his left eye. He now looks for a new ship and crew to find a cure to his bad luck in the endless universe. Also to raid more ships.

Attributes:

Strength: 6
Constitution: 6
Dexterity: 6
Intelligence: 2
Fortitude: 6
Luck: 2

Traits:
Missing eye: His left eye is missing.
Greedy: He likes shiny things like gold and jewels.
Cursed: Can't talk.
Ambidextrous: Using both hands, can wield two weapons.
Kleptomaniac: No loot must be left unlooted.

Skills:
Good at using most weapons that are either guns or swords. It's very easy for him to steal and loot enemy ships. Good at fighting in outer space and breaking inside ships.

Special Skills:
Dual wielding: He can use both a space pirate sabre and a space pirate flintlock gun at the same time with both hands. And he is good at it

Belongings:
Space pirate flintlock gun: Uses special bullets and powder that can work in the void of space and at great distances.
Space pirate sabre: Specially made to be able to cut ship hulls and breaking in.
Space pirate clothing: Doubles as a basic space suit. Has a cool space pirate hat too.

Alright, we should be able to get started! First off, here are your sheet with skills added.

Common Skills:
Leadership: the art of making yourself looks more capable than other by ordering them around.
Diplomacy: the art of avoiding needless conflict. Drop that tri-barreled blaster Zortron.
Trading: the art of bamboozling the money out of civilized beings.
Ship Operating: the art of knowing when and why to push some buttons, and why not to push some others.
Navigation: the art of not sending your ship into a collision course with an asteroid field, and choosing optimal travel routes.
Piloting: the art of barrel rolling.
Artillery: the art of blasting objects to smithereens.
Mechanics: the art of keeping your ship in a flyable state.
Medicine: the art of knowing where to stab someone with the healing nanobots syringe.
Science: the art of understanding the phenomenons of the universe.
Combat: the art of hand to hand diplomacy.

Spoiler: Katerina (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Jim J. Barkley (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Edwin 'Starbeard' Tex (click to show/hide)

Now then, it is time for you to choose a captain. You know, the one who will boss you around. Or maybe you follow the concept of democratic crew? Or you could wait for NAV and GigaGiant, I will leave that up to you.

Dang it nakeen, you're starting another new game and leaving zethe to be forgotten? I am disappoint now.
Sorry to disappoint Dustan! Zethe will have to wait a bit, I don't feel confident enough to resume it. I'm still seeking a balance gameplay wise.

Your leadership skill is one below the dog's. Also, your lack of int and luck worries me, as both seem valuable for a ship captain; the dog has 6's in both of those. Also, I'd prefer our captain able to speak to us.

No offense in any way; simply strategically speaking, the dog seems like the most viable candidate.

We could have co-captains. I drive the ship and use the weapons while the dog does the stuff that requires more brains like contactionf other ships and making the right choices for the crew.

You mean you get to be the gunnery officer/navigator while Jim gets to be captain? Because that is in fact what you're describing there.

I can respect that. It also helps that nobody is likely to take a ship captained by a dog seriously - better to have a bearded speechless grizzled space pirate that a dog is authorized to speak for!

Before getting started. We have to get you a starting ship. Which ship will you choose, and what will the captain name it?
The captain, Jim J. Barkley is the captain of the ship, but you will all be co-owners of the ship due to some administrative tomfoolery.

Donkey-class Light Transporter:
A very common medium-sized ship, used for shipping goods and people. Cheap and coming with a large hold, they are often customized to better suit their owners needs. As such, its customers base isn't only comprised of traders.

Hull: Medium
Shields: Weak
Speed: Slow
Starting Armament: None
Bonus:
-Large Hold

Abacus-class Science Vessel:
A light ship designed to gather information from a wide variety of regions of space. From the asteroid fields to the deadly proximity of a deadly sun, its enhanced shielding system and special radiation proof materials allow its crew to stay unharmed, for a while. It even comes with a basic built-in lab.

Hull: Light
Shields: Strong
Speed: Medium
Starting Armament: None
Bonus:
-Resistance to radiations (Hull)
-Built-in basic laboratory

Magellan-class Exploration Ship:
A very old ship model that was used during the great era of space exploration. It is very popular and balanced, designed for the dangers of space.

Hull: Medium
Shields: Medium
Speed: Medium
Starting Armament: Light Laser Turret (Front-mounted)
Bonus:
-Efficient Engines
-Enhanced Sensors

Nettoyeur-class Prospector Ship:
A type of ship mass produced for the increasing mining and recycling needs of space industry. It is very sturdy and manoeuvrable, but very slow.

Hull: Strong
Shields: Medium
Speed: Very Slow
Starting Armament: Tractor Beam
Bonus:
-Medium Hold
-Enhanced Manoeuvrability

Honesty-class Corvette:
An outdated but still pretty strong ship. Widely used in planetary security of small colonies, it is a (relatively) cheap and attractive ship for would-be mercenaries, or pirates. Advertised to the general public for its guns and durability, because that's actually all it got to show.

Hull: Strong
Shields: Medium
Speed: Medium
Starting Armament: Medium Laser Turret (Front) / 2 Light Laser Turret (Side)

What's involved in upgrading our ship? Are all of those ships customizable? What are the most common types of situations we can expect to find ourselves in?

Until I have more information, I'm gonna vote for the Magellan Exploration Ship.
Title: Re: Sailing on the Sea of Stars [5/5]
Post by: Nakéen on October 03, 2017, 01:27:26 am
All your ships will be customizable. And you will be able to obtain a new one in the future, if all goes well. Customization is ultimately limited by the available space in your ship and the power output of your reactor.

As for situations, it depends on where you will go! Space is wide, surprise is part of the fun. Also, your starting location is a very safe place if that is what you are worried about.

Post by: Harry Baldman on October 03, 2017, 05:48:10 am
The Abacus-class looks pretty good to me, radiation shielding opens up more star-related maneuvers we can do and a lab is never gonna not come in handy.

...or pirates.
I vote for Honesty-class Corvette. With the crew webhave, we will need guns, also has good defenses and is not slow.
Also the abacus has no weapons and a light hull, any attacker will easily kill us while we are unable to retaliate. My main vote is for Corvette, but if no one votes for that one I would accept the Magellan too, but the Honesty-class Corvette has stronger hull and more than twice the guns.

And the only one with science skill is the dog.
Why is the dog smarter than everyone else how is a dog better captain than a pirate captain
Title: Re: Sailing on the Sea of Stars [5/5]
Post by: randomgenericusername on October 03, 2017, 01:55:42 pm
Is space police a thing and will they try to kill us if we go raid random planets/stations/trading ships? Or is there private guards instead, so if we commit a crime somwhere they wont hunt us in another sectors of the universe?
Do traders accept stolen goods?
Can the hull/shields/speed of ships be upgraded permanently, like from medium to strong in hull?
EDIT: I tought I had edited but instead I double posted sorry.
Title: Re: Sailing on the Sea of Stars [5/5]
Post by: Coolrune206 on October 03, 2017, 01:58:18 pm
I'm thinking the corvette class or the science ship. Both would gel well with our crew, and probably piracy.
Title: Re: Sailing on the Sea of Stars [5/5]
Post by: randomgenericusername on October 03, 2017, 02:37:36 pm
I mean, we have only 1 scientist (With only one level in the skill, so I guess just the basics of science) and 2-3 of us are better at combat so the Corvette would be way better for piracy or at least defending ourselves (And has strong hull too) while the science ship looks very weak without weapons and weak hull.
Yeah I like the Corvette.
Title: Re: Sailing on the Sea of Stars [5/5]

So the votes are tied for the Honesty and the Abacus! Well, let's have the die get the final word.
1 to 3 will be the Corvette.
4 to 6 will be the Abacus.

[5] And it's the Abacus! Actually the Honesty, due to a last minute change.

Now, how shall Jim name the ship?

Once that will be done, the game will finally begin.

Oh, my fault for not telling that I would break a tie with a roll.

The ship hasn't been named, so for me, there is no problem to change the starting ship to the Honesty-class Corvette. :)

edit: I also managed to swap Magellan and Abacus names. It's not impacting the results of course.

Let's call her Magellan-class for the convenience of port authorities across space. She's a fine ship and deserves to be named after a man who went nearly around a planet once (if only we could replicate such a feat in our own right).

It was fate, really - when Jim bought the thing off the used ship lot he was momentarily at a loss on what to rename her, but then suddenly saw a fine, much more expensive Magellan-class vessel parked further in and knew instantly what he had to aspire to one day, and chose to memorialize it in the name of this corvette.

Well, either that or we can call her HMS YOU'RE NEXT, with that specific capitalization, commemorating a piece of graffiti Jim saw in a public restroom earlier that day.

On one hand, Greek mythology is the dullest source for sci-fi naming schemes, possibly only rivaled by Norse mythology.

Spoiler: On the other hand... (click to show/hide)

Anyway, the HMS YOU'RE NEXT it is! The HMS part is optional but highly recommended - I picture a lot of ships have HMS in their name due to being registered in some kind of ship tax haven that's a tiny planetoid kingdom off in the ass end of space, or at least ours does for that specific reason.

Does our crew know about Edwin's backstory? I was about to suggest that we could make our first mission finding a cure for his curse, but I'm not sure if he could even communicate his dilemma to us. He can't talk after all, and his low intelligence and inability to count leads me to believe that he might be illiterate.

EDIT: I guess he maybe could be slighty literate but has great difficulty reading and doesn't know what grammar is, if a word is too hard to understand like "diplomacy" he won't be able to. Other things like "loot" or "kill" are easier because they are short and simple. 2-3 syllabes max, I guess.

Thomas looks at the words "HMS YOU'RE NEXT" on the side of the ship and visibly sighs, thinking about what his life has come to. Well, at least these probably aren't the sort of people who pay attention to the news, he thinks. Actually, I'm surprised they managed to get the right spelling of "you're". They probably copied it from somewhere.

Turn 0: The Crew

Current Location: The Hub (Space Station)

You are currently in the Emelus II system, under the protection of the Galactic Alliance.

Galactic Alliance (common knowledge): the biggest alliance of the galaxy, gathering many people from the stars (humans are, of course, a part of it). The alliance is a force to be reckoned with, but far from all powerful. Security is instantly lessened in less important systems, and there are many, many threats in space that require their full attention.

The Hub (common knowledge): a massive space station located near the Em II Jump Gate. With one of the largest shipyards of the alliance, it is a common crossing point for spacefarers. Nearly everything made in the Alliance can be found there.

(note: Humans are not unified under a single government. The same goes for many spacefaring people.)

None of you are well versed in the knowledge of the galaxy. Very few are, as there are far too many things to discover...

Jim stepped into the hangar G-56. He scratched proudly at his captain licence worn in a necklace, and looked at the Honesty-class Corvette that was now his. These words blazed across the hull of the Honesty: HMS YOU'RE NEXT.

What a perfect name for a mighty fine vessel such as her, he thought as his chest filled with pride. Using his claw drone, he looked once again at the captain's licence. They butchered the photo a bit, but apart from this inconvenient detail, it was all fine.

Loud steps echoed behind him, instantly breaking his reverie. "Ah... right. My shipmates."

Edwin was at the front, the most loud, yet the least talkative one. The rowdy "privateer" looked at the ship with eyes burning with excitement.
Right behind him were Katerina, who seemed just a bit less rowdy than Edwin, and Thomas, clad in a foldless suit and walking with an upright stance.
And last, was... that thing. What was that again. It was called Sneed.

That was his crew, and coincidentally co-owners of the ship. He didn't want to remember that day, this whole day that felt like a scam. Oh well, he was well past that now. The future was ahead, and beyond.

The five future spacefarers entered the HMS YOU'RE NEXT in a succession, with Thomas entering last, he took some time to admire the inspired name of the vessel. He sighed before entering.

Booting up the systems, firing up the reactor, they prepared for take off. As the ship woke up from her slumber, a voice blared across the ship.

"WELCOME BACK CAPTAIN BARKLEY. ALL SYSTEMS ONLINE, ENERGY RESERVES 100%, THE WEATHER IS OPTIMAL FOR A TRIP AND THE FERGAS CORPORATION OFFERS A 20% REDUCTION TO NEW CAPTAINS BUYING FROM THE FERGAS SHIPYARDS. THANK YOU VALUED CUSTOMER."

Someone turned the volume down to an acceptable level. That was the ship's crude AI, which was named FAI-T7BAAU33. You could probably rename it, or leave it as that.

Traveling in space:
-Power: Your ship's energy reserves. Most ship actions cost power, and your ship will be disabled for a while if your power reaches 0. Replenishes over time.

-Jumping:
You can jump from hex to hex, one jump costs 20 Power with your current engines.
Attempting a long jump, to travel from systems to systems will consume 5 normal jumps at once.

-Jump Gates:
Going through a Jump Gate costs no power. They are not limited to a single destination.

Edit: I forgot, you may look for missions or odd job on the Galactic Channel or something. It's not like you are cut off from the world in your ship.

edit: OP updated.
edit2: Forgot your funds, added them to the Crew Status. Sorry for the oversight!

Katerina locates her quarters without a word spent to the other crewmembers, then looks for a terminal to access the galactic network of information, whatever they call the space internet.
She browses for news of wars or sectors with high piracy.

"So, did anyone get any leads for missions on the station?" asks Thomas. "If not, I'll check the Galactic Channel. We need a job soon if we want to be able to pay off the cost of the ship and have money set aside for maintenance, to say nothing of making a profit."

Thomas will probably start checking the Galactic Channel for missions regardless of what anyone says.

"Ah, friends! Shall we set off? There's so much to discover!" Sneed says cheerfully while pointing one of its tentacles toward the stars. "We could investigate the mysteries of the Storblarte Nebula. Or navigate through the Fergas Asteroid Field. Or maybe even...go beyond the limits of known space into the unknown! Ooh! I'm so excited! I'm gonna get ready right away!" As Sneed slides deeper into the ship, it lets out a gleeful alien squeal comparable to nails on a chalkboard.

"So, did anyone get any leads for missions on the station?" asks Thomas. "If not, I'll-"
"Missions? Adventure is our mission!" Sneed says eagerly, cutting Thomas off. Sneed continues forth, oblivious to the group's economic needs.

Rush further into the ship and perform basic maintenance procedures and safety checks. Make sure everything is in working order and ready for take off when necessary.

"Yes, well, adventure doesn't exactly pay the bills, does it? However, I'll check the Galactic Channel and see if there are any jobs available that are at least adventure-adjacent."

Thomas checks the Galactic Channel for jobs, mostly for ones that pay well and aren't too dangerous, and will just give whatever jobs he finds a more exciting description to try to appease Sneed.

Just thought about it, but is there a color you would like for your characters' speech?

Turn 0a: Thrusters Online

Katerina locates her quarters without a word spent to the other crewmembers, then looks for a terminal to access the galactic network of information, whatever they call the space internet.
She browses for news of wars or sectors with high piracy.

Katerina left the command room, heading for her quarters. A very small living space with the barest minimum. A bed designed for space travels, a closet and a desk space with a retractable stool embedded in the wall.

She sat on her bed, and pulled out her smartphone. Activating the holo display, she browsed on the Galactic Network. They were still on ground, so there was no need yet to use the ship's terminal, which was in the command room.

There were many, many news all over the galaxy. You picked some that garnered your attention.

------------------GALACTIC NEWS------------------

-----------------WAR AND PIRACY-----------------
Another skirmish in the Helen Valtias sector. The attackers were unidentified, the local defense force speaks of unknown ships, while the officials waved off the issue as "space pirates in junkships"

(...)
War still raging between the Sheorns and the Lignondrims. Millions of refugees are escaping the war-afflicted systems, and the conflict threatens to weaken the Galactic Alliance borders.
(..)

-------------------------------------------------------

There was an awkward atmosphere in the ship. Katerina had sneakily disappeared, the mute pirate was... well mute, and the captain was harassed by an AI, and the most exotic member of the crew was talking non-stop, bursting with excitement.
I'm gonna get ready right away!"

Not really expecting an answer, and maybe trying to ignore the talkative non-human, he asked:
"So, did anyone get any leads for missions on the station?"

"Missions? Adventure is our mission!" he heard right behind him as Sneed barged in mid-sentence. Naturally, Thomas answered:
"Yes, well, adventure doesn't exactly pay the bills, does it? However, I'll check the Galactic Channel and see if there are any jobs available that are at least adventure-adjacent."

Sneed had disappeared to wander off in the corridors of the ship. Talking to the air of the ship, Thomas sighed and looked up at the Galactic Channel for safe jobs. He picks up a few that seemed to fit his criteria.

------------------GALACTIC CHANNEL------------------

--------------------------JOBS---------------------------
1. [Escort] Trade convoy recruiting additional escorts. Safe route and few risks of raids.
2. [Escort] Scientific team looking for an escort to the star of Xoa, in case of an encounter with a Black Riperius.
3. [Hunting] The Xamesh Wraiths breeding season has begun, many systems activities are being disrupted by this invasive species. A hefty bonus will be offered for each killed individual.
4. [Transport] Looking for private contractors for bulk materials transporting.
5. [Misc] Elgenei Tech hiring crew for space data gathering.
6. [Transport] Hiring private contractors for delivering relief aid equipment the Lignondrims refugees.
...
-----------------------------------------------------------

Thomas wondered. What was a Black Riperius? And Xamesh Wraiths? A quick search led to articles about spaceborn fauna, pictures of quite scary looking beasts, and unnerving reports of survival.

Rush further into the ship and perform basic maintenance procedures and safety checks. Make sure everything is in working order and ready for take off when necessary.
Sneed had been taught some ship maintenance procedures by the traders who picked him up from his homeworld.

[Ship Operating 1]: [7] (Overshoot)
Sneed happily pushed buttons around, reading various parameters and checking to make sure they were in appropriate ranges. As he went through his inspection, he reached the engine examination part.

An important part, what would happen if the engines malfunctioned during take-off or landing? Or during a jump? He remembered how the traders stressed the importances of having working engines.

Some test-firing couldn't hurt mmh?

Sneed activated the thrusters a bit too eagerly, sending a shockwave rippling through the ship and the hangar.

The ship suddenly accelerated, making everyone onboard fall on the ground.

[3] Jim was thrown off its seat, barely managing to bite on the backseat.
[2] Katerina slammed head first on her closet.
[4] Edwin tripped, but managed to grab a nearby wall handle.
[6] Thomas grabbed reflexively to Edwin's neck, nearly choking him.
[4] Sneed stood the acceleration despite the suddenness.

Turn 1: Weapons Systems Online

Sneed apologized profusely to the captain, in an overly respectful manner.
"Sorry Captain! Just checking thrusters!" Sneed says in a slightly embarrassed tone through the intercom (or whatever communication device is available). "I won't make that mistake again! I, the lowly Alpha, respect your dominance, Omega leader. I'm sure that under your leadership, we'll hunt down those metaphorical beaver-bisons and oxen-deers that plague the galaxy!"

Then Katerina barged in furious, visibly with a clear idea in mind.
"'Captain' dog, I have proposition for you. We should head to war between Sheorns and Lignondrims, and offer services as privateer to one side. Then we can be like pirate,
but legal. Also, tell whatever idiot accelerated those engines that I am going to kill him."

Sneed avoided crossing gazes with this unnerving human female.

Starbeard handed a paper filled with barely readable gibberish. It breathed with illiteracy.
Starbeard agree rock miner
rock miner smart we go war and kill.

Thomas reported in, making a concise report of his findings.
"Yes, Captain. There's a couple of transport missions, which our ship isn't really made to do. Elgenei Tech is hiring crew for space data gathering, which also might not fit our ship's specifications, as it isn't a science vessel. Also, a trade convoy is looking for escorts; it seems like a job well-suited for an Honesty-class Corvette such as this, and, also, I must emphasize, very exciting."

The captain took the information in mind, and quickly made his choice.
"Rohhohoohgoodness no! Rhoho! That's rhow you get your ass blown apart like a basket of eggs! There's rhundreds, nay, thousands of idiots who've realized the same thing, y'see, place must be bloody rwell crawling with corvettes just like - I rreiterate, just like this one! "In due time, Mr. Starbeard! You know, rwhen rwe rhave better weapons and more skills!"

"Besides, rescorting is rlike privateering, rhexcept you can rlegally claim self-defense on anyone you space-murder!"

There was much arguing about the viability of an escort mission versus jumping straight into the heat of war. Ultimately, the captain's words went through.

Now, they had to choose an escort job from those Thomas gathered.
1. [Escort] Trade convoy recruiting additional escorts. Safe route and few risks of raids.

Destination: Logion Prime (Davos System)

Quickly regaining his composure, Jim turned the thrusters off and communicated orders to the crew through the intercom.

[Luck +2]: [4] -Success-
When all talks were done, he proceeded to inspect their ship. Rummaging around the rooms of the HMS You're Next, he noticed a door that wasn't on the base model plans. He opened it, revealing a hidden storage room full of basic equipment.

Something caught his eye though. Two Zero-G suits, a bit tattered but fully operational. One was human sized, and the other had four arms and a tail compartment too.

Starbeard made a wide saluting gesture to the captain, and proceeded to check the weapons systems. Pondering of the drunkenness of his past self, he sort of realized he was still a bit drunk right now. Couldn't help it, the 3-Eyed Tepton served an awesome brew.

In a state of half-drunkenness, he checked the weapons systems. They were working perfectly fine, as could attest the charred hole in the hangar.

Everyone in the ship heard the detonation, and the fire system alarm blarring.

Apart from his previous blunder, Sneed had made a perfect routine check of the systems. They were all good to go, and no defect was present.

Space Jesus Christ, thinks Thomas, these people are going to get me killed, aren't they?

Yes they are. And this sudden display of eagerness to shoot things left Thomas livid.

Then he heard the woman with a russian accent speak of war between Sheorns and Lignondrims...
[intelligence 3] [9] -Overshoot-

Wait wait wait, Sheorns? Lignondrims? He heard things, terrible ones.
Sheorns were said to be a warmongering species, practicing sentient species sacrifices for fun. They said they flew massive warships fueled with the souls of their enemies, and that they killed kittens for fun.
Lignondrims were a people able to peer into your mind, and mentally torture you with a single gaze. They were sadistic, and masochistic. Oh, and didn't this drunken hobo last night spoke of how they could steal your memories, manipulate your thoughts, and lift things with the power of mind? And that their ships were made of brain tissue?

Thomas started sweating heavily, he wasn't feeling really well. His reason was telling him the baseless rumors were probably children stories, but his panicked state wasn't having any of that.

That done, begin perusing the news for details almost completely unrelated to escorting a science vessel along past a Black Riperius!

Try to stop Sneed from leaving the ship. Set the other turrets to online too to see if they work, but try to not shoot something this time. Except Sneed, if he leaves and tries to return to the ship shoot him with the turrets.
He takes another piece of paper and writes: sorry accident.

Thomas's mind goes into into overdrive trying to think of how to deal with the situation. What if I just...ran away? he thinks. No, station authorities must have heard the blast, and if they catch me running, the charges will be worse.

"Okay, everybody just stay calm, I'm going to figure out a way to get us out of this without us getting into trouble."

Thomas uses his law expertise to try to figure out how to deal with having discharged a ship weapon in a hanger that doesn't get them into more trouble or get them arrested or have them pay a huge fine.

Sneed, hearing the commotion, quickly made its way back to its crewmates.

Hearing the blast, Katrina's gaze darkened.
"What was that."

"Mr. Starbeard rhas blown a hole in the hangar! Rhyou'd think they rwould build them tougher."
Sneed let out a noise vaguely resembling a sigh of relief.
"Oh, that's not too bad. It's all just a simple mistake. No harm done. We can just apologize for the damage." Sneed's three eyes began to twinkle as it spoke optimistically. "Yeah! That's what we'll do! Everyone appreciates a good apology. I'm sure the authorities will be understanding. Accidents happen. Just leave it to me!"

Leave the ship and locate the authorities. Confess our involvement in the hangar damage and sincerely apologize.

(Feel free to stop Sneed if you see fit)

Turn 2: sorry accident

"What was that."

"Mr. Starbeard rhas blown a hole in the hangar! Rhyou'd think they rwould build them tougher." said Jim without an ounce of worry.

"What. He. What."

Anger was rising in Katerina's voice.

sorry accident. Starbeard quickly scribbled.

"Rhit was a rlight turret rhas well," Captain Jim says. "Just goes to show, rhyou can't get good engineering rhese days."

Thomas attempted to defuse the atmosphere, but they just weren't really listening to him.
"Okay, everybody just stay calm, I'm going to figure out a way to get us out of this without us getting into trouble."

"We just bought the ship. Why don't we blame the AI as being faulty? We can hand it over to station technology people, and get a new one- by the time they've figured out we lied, we will be far off."

"Hey! What happened, friends? Are we under attack? Is everyone alright?"

Despite the agitation of the crew, Sneed seemed rather unfettered.

Attempting to shift the fault away by backing up Katerina, Starbeard scribbled again:
Blob you stupid not leave or kill
rock miner right again
we say ship fault we leave before they notice lie.

[Intelligence +3 Space Lawyer +2]: [1] -Critical Failure-
While he asked everyone to calm down, inside Thomas himself was unable to relax. This stress, these unexpected events, this... crew. His stress levels were off the charts, and his usually composed mind was fumbling with his knowledge.

And with all this speed thinking, he reached what seemed like a logical conclusion.

We are toast, the Hub government is going to sue us for massive amounts of money, and not contempt to push us into the abyss of debt, they will own our bodies like slaves. We will be sold to be experimented upon until we die. And this is the best outcome, the spacestation defense force will definitely come rushing and blast us away with their heavy weaponry. Oh god oh god oh god.

Tentatively accepting the second one - a little excitement never hurt anyone, did it?

That done, begin perusing the news for details almost completely unrelated to escorting a science vessel along past a Black Riperius!

Impervious to the stress waves emitted by his shipmates, Captain Jim simply opened the command room's terminal to get more details on the escort mission, and possibly other tidbits.

------------------GALACTIC NETWORK------------------

-----------------BLACK RIPERIUS------------------
Black Riperius are space dwelling predators, native to the hyperspace. They usually live close to young stars, and are extremely territorial. First discovered in the Riperius System, and named Black Riperius due to their completely black appearance as they do not reflect light. As non-standard dimensional creatures, looking at their movements can have strong nausea effects.

-------------------------------------------------------

He didn't found anything interesting about the Xoa System. It was a mostly unexplored one, and the Xoa star was young.

Spoiler: Escort Mission (click to show/hide)

Right as he finished that, FAI-T7BAAU33 warned him of an incoming transmission.
"Incoming transmission from the Hub authorities. Putting caller online."

[Luck +2] [7] -Critical Success-
A male voice was heard by Jim, Katerina and Thomas.
"HMS You're Next of the Hangar G-56, this is Sgt Nathan Jenkins. An unauthorized weapon activation was detected coming from your ship, and you damaged the wall of your hangar. "

Jim naturally responded, as the captain of the HMS YOU'RE NEXT. The officer continued:
"Enchanted Captain Barkley. Let's go straight to the point then. We quickly determined this unfortunate event was probably an accident. Don't worry, this stuff happens all the time for new captains, we all went through that. You will just have a small fine to pay for the damage, nothing to worry about. That's why the crappiest hangars are given to new spacefarers after all."

He laughed in the intercom, and you could hear other people laughing behind him.

Try to stop Sneed from leaving the ship. Set the other turrets to online too to see if they work, but try to not shoot something this time. Except Sneed, if he leaves and tries to return to the ship shoot him with the turrets.
He takes another piece of paper and writes: sorry accident.
Sneed, hearing the commotion, quickly made its way back to its crewmates.
"Hey! What happened, friends? Are we under attack? Is everyone alright?"

"Yeah! Leave the ship and locate the authorities. Confess our involvement in the hangar damage and sincerely apologize.

(Feel free to stop Sneed if you see fit)

[Strength +2] [3] -Partial Success-
Starbeard ran after Sneed, attempting to catch him. But his legs felt heavy, probably due to his inebriation. Unable to really catch up to Sneed, he still managed to get his attention.

[Intelligence -1] [1] -Critical Failure-
Seeing the mute pirate stumbling menacingly toward him made him nope away faster. He darted out of the ship, waving his gelatinous tentacles at a visible camera.

Starbeard grunted, and rushed to activate the weapons systems.

[Artillery +1]: [7] -Overshoot-
He turned all the turrets online, and prepared to lock on and fire on Sneed. But in the rush, he accidentally made the turrets shoot again. They blasted the hangar, missing the panicked Sneed.

The hangar was now on fire, having suffered a full volley from the HMS YOU'RE NEXT weapons.

Power -40
All turrets online

------------------

Back at the command room, a few seconds before this unfortunate pyrotechnic display.

"Don't forget to deactivate your turret captain, remember that having active weapon systems in civilian areas is prohibited."

Before anyone could answer, the Sergeant added with a surprised voice:
"Err, Captain Barkley, why are all your weapons systems activated?"

The following shockwave and tremors scrambled the transmission. The hangar was on fire, and Starbeard was back to the weapons systems console.
"Captain Barkley, I'm afraid we are going to intervene. Don't panic, turn your turrets off, and wait for us."

(Let the record show that Sneed was totally right. Wasn't that big a deal after all. Well, until Starbeard decided to keep fumbling with the weapon systems. But, that's on him.)

Panicking, Sneed let out a ghastly screech as it fled. Seeing the dangerous actions of its crewmate, Sneed tried to figure out an explanation for his actions. It was left with one conclusion.  Starbeard is suffering from space madness! That's the only explanation! Sneed had heard rumors of such a condition, but never saw it first hand. But seeing it now, Sneed knew what had to be done.

Continue fleeing. Locate the authorities and/or a doctor. Explain to them that one of my crewmates is sick and requires psychological help. Urge them to accompany me back to the ship so that he can receive much needed treatment.

Turn 3: Just another day for the Hub's Security

This really was a sorry accident. Captain Jim turns to Thomas, giving him a knowing doggy look.

"I daresay there's ronly one thing to be done here."

Voice-lock the shipboard weapons and propulsion systems from the captain's console and initiate a distracting VR simulation (almost like the real thing, initial conditions maximally fitting our current situation!) at the gunner's post to buy time until the authorities arrive.

[Ship Operating +1]: [5] -Success-
Jim quickly overrode the turrets activation with his captain grade and locked them. He then was quite disappointed to realize his ship wasn't fancy enough to have VR simulation support. He made a mental note to remedy to this in the future.

Then he calmly waited for the authorities to arrive and do their job.

Thomas clutches his hair with both hands. "Okay, in my expert legal opinion, I believe we are totally fucked. How soon can we get out of here? If we jump while still inside the hanger, is there a chance we won't immediately die? You know what, that doesn't matter."

On second thought, an in-hangar jump was a pretty fancy way to commit suicide. So yeah, probably a bad idea. Thomas waited for the authorities near the captain, taking example on his level-headed attitude despite the situation.

Katerina immediately returns to her dorm and promptly locks the doors. She doesn't open them until the authorities arrive.

After seeing the situation devolving into such a mess, Katerina felt a sudden need to isolate herself into a haven of safety, far from any trouble-making element.

The station's personnel saw a terrified Slimeon -a rare sight- running in the hallways, screaming for help and authorities.

[Luck +0]: [5]
The detonation in the hangar G-56 wasn't left unnoticed by the security of the spaceport. A crew of security guards, firefighters and first aid personnel were already on the way. Sneed stumbled upon them pretty quickly, and they calmly listened to his panicked rambling.

"Calm down sir, we will get the situation under control. You said you are a member of the ship's crew? Follow us and don't intervene, everything will be fine."

He followed them, feeling already much more safe.

(Well, there was the possibility that Sneed would cause everyone to go to jail.)
Okay we have problems. Prepare to drive the ship and leave this damn place using the jump gate to reach the Xoa system. Let's hope all those years of driving drunk will help. If the hangar was not blown open, fix this mistake with more gun.

this is blob fault.

(Maybe minimal luck and intelligence was a bad idea after all.)

Realizing that he may had went overboard, Starbeard's survival instinct kicked in full-force. He was a pirate, there was no way he was going to come out of this blunder in one piece. They would never get him, he was going to survive whatever it took.

The turrets were unresponsive. Then when he arrived in the command room, he saw the calm and dandy canine captain waiting for him. He realized the captain must have had locked in the ship, and that he was screwed. Resigned, he fell to his knee and waited for the patrol force to arrive.

-------------------

A merely few seconds later, a patrol ship escorted by a few drones appeared in front of the opened hangar door, preventing any escape. The trained staff of the station quickly put out the fires while the security escorted the crew outside of the ship. They all got the luxury to wait together in an interrogation room while their ship was being inspected.

There was much tension and awkwardness in the room, until Sgt Jenkins entered in the room to interrogate the crew. He was a middle aged man with a bionic eye. Despite looking stern, you didn't feel hostility coming from him.

The individual interrogations all went more or less fine, with our crew having varying degree of cooperations when asked questions. Then came last Starbeard's turn, who was staring at his feet. The officer was reading Starbeard's record from a holopad.

"Edwin Tex, self nicknamed 'Starbeard'. Illegal trafficking, murder, space piracy, drunk driving, jaywalking... I could go on. And now with an additional charge of destruction of property. Aren't you quite the character. You are a dangerous individual, if it were up to me, you would be in jail right now."

His face tensed with frustration.
"But I got orders from my superiors. We know you had connections with the Hernaro Nebula Pirates, and if you tell us everything you know, they are willing to let you off the hook this time."

Whatever was Starbeard's answer, the rest of the crew was released from custody. They were notified that nothing illegal was detected during the ship's search, and that they could return to their ship. The fine for the damage was a whooping 25000 A'Creds, and Starbeard being unable to pay the totality, 20000 were left to share among the remaining crew.

Sgt Jenkins read the paper with his unblinking bionic eye. He had the face of a "You have the nerve to write that?". He just had the testimony of all the other crew, which of course designated him as the main guilty party of the accident. It wasn't hard to guess that Starbeard's attempted lies fell flat and were not received pretty well.

[Luck -2]: [5] -Okay-
A smarter individual would have been able to tell that the security officer was thinking of a scheme to have this insane individual arrested. He was going to say something, when he received a message in his earpiece.

"...Yes sir."

Begrudgingly, he then took Starboard's info about the Hemaro Nebula Pirates. He made it clear that he wasn't having any of Starbeard's obvious lies, and that he despised those of his kind. When all was done, he just said:

"Now leave and never come back. Though if you pursue in your way, I have no doubt you will get what you deserve soon."

And with that, Starbeard returned to the ship.

The sound isn't the best, he has some difficulties making some words at times. But it's overall understandable with some effort and logic.

Jim carefully listens for details of interest while considering the exact workings of this here ship.

How do the turrets work? Do they need to be manned individually or can they be used all together? Furthermore, do we actually need a dedicated engineer to keep the engine going at reasonably good capacity or can an AI manage non-emergency operations? Finally, can we do the FTL thing where we lock off separate compartments of the ship and possibly vent the atmosphere in them?

In any case, set to work on idiot-proofing the ship systems (hopefully using my Security Systems skill this time, nudge nudge wink wink) against anything Starbeard or Sneed might get up to. Set up a lock based on a specific hand gesture and a verbally given password at the very least, and check how much access I have to everyone's personal quarters in case I need to pump highly illegal neurotoxins or something into there.

(What the hell you are going to get us killed, remember I am the only pilot here with ship operation 2, navigation and piloting skills, also one of the only here that can use the ship weapons with artillery skill. Donpt lock our only mean of defense and the main feature of the ship. We bought it for the guns, no guns makes the ship useless.)

Seeing all its crew mates go their separate ways, Sneed decided now was an appropriate time to return to its quarters. Sitting in its room, Sneed reflected on Starbeard's behavior.

The medics said that Starbeard wasn't suffering from space madness, so why did he attack me? Could it be...that he doesn't like me? But why would that be? Hmm...

Suddenly, inspiration struck Sneed and the answer became clear.

Oh! Of course! How could I have not realized it! I don't know anything about Space Pirate culture! I've been so focused on other things, that I never truly took the time to really get to know Starbeard and his rich cultural heritage. Maybe shooting at me with the ship's weapons was a jolly old pirate prank. That must be why he deliberately kept missing. Ah, it was just an act of playfulness. I've been such a fool, it was so obvious!

Realizing its crew mate's harmless intentions, Sneed decided that it needed to educate itself on Space Pirate culture so as to avoid misunderstandings in the future. It can't be so judgmental next time.

Look through the computer terminal/smart phone in my room for more information regarding Space Pirate culture.

Was it a satisfying answer? Either way, they both realized something through this civil exchange. They would have to bear with each other for now, and they didn't have much choice.

"Rhis is rhall a terrible misunderstanding."

Graciously put up 15k credits for the fine and let the Tex fall where he may.

Jim carefully listens for details of interest while considering the exact workings of this here ship.

Jim payed a part of the fine, and no 5000 Credits were left to pay. Obviously, not paying before leaving could leave to more unfortunate misunderstandings.

Jim Barkley opened the Honesty-class Corvette's Online Manual while simultaneously listening carefully to the conversation. He also remembered some parts of the Space Captain's Handbook and some other leaflets he read while looking to buy for a ship.

Oh, and he couldn't understand what Starbeard was writing. His writing was highly inintelligible on screen. Not like it was hard to imagine what he was writing.

1. Turrets were linked to the same system, allowing them to be manned individually or altogether depending on one's need.
2. Engines were usually handled by the AI of the ship, but an engineer was definitely needed if emergencies arose. Some specialized maneuvers required bypassing the safety, something an AI was programmed never to do. In such cases, an engineer was needed to manage the engines.
3. It was standard practice to have compartmentalized ships sections, and each compartments could be sealed using dedicated blast doors. Venting the atmosphere inside was definitely possible, and relied on the Life-Support system.

He also studied the ship a bit more. In the command room, which was also the piloting post, it was possible to control every systems of the ship to some extent. But the options were quiet limited, leading to a decreased efficiency compared to controlling systems directly. From weapons to shield to life-support, every systems had a dedicated area which allowed better control over them.

Also, vital positions to fill for a ship where: Pilot, Navigator, Gunner and Sensor Engineer. While Piloting could be handled by the AI for set travels, it would be better to have a dedicated Pilot for delicate situations, from asteroid field dodging (not recommended) to taking off and landing.

[Ship Operating 1 / Security Expert 2]: [4] -Success-

This time reminding his knowledge in security systems, Jim used of his Captain authority to idiot-proof the ship until further notice. The lock required a specific barking and a motion only a canine could execute. Take that humanoids.

And of course, as the ship captain, he was in total control of the ship. Such subject was generally not to be flaunted in the face of crewmates, as it tended to favorise mutiny.

After the interrogation, Thomas buys a bottle of space whiskey on the station and retreats to his quarters.

"Let me know when we reach the mission area," he says before taking a swig and closing the door.

Thomas, already weary while they didn't even have set sail yet, went to rest in his quarters.

Seeing all its crew mates go their separate ways, Sneed decided now was an appropriate time to return to its quarters. Sitting in its room, Sneed reflected on Starbeard's behavior.

------------------GALACTIC NETWORK------------------

Space Pirates: A variant of humans whose origins trace back to a very old experiment at creating humans suited for space travel. Genetically modified to have space adapted and stronger bodies, an unfortunate aftereffect was an increased propensity to violence and a deteriorated intellect, which quickly made them devolve into the well-known Space Pirate species (self-named).

Most Space Pirates are very aggressive, and seem to have much lower empathy and compassion than the average human. They will readily insult each others and brawl, they don't value other Space Pirates as much as another human. All Space Pirates except for very rare individuals are known for their love of heavy liquor. They are able to ingest alcohol quantities lethal to normal humans without showing signs of drunkenness.

Not killing someone could be considered a sign of friendship from a Space Pirate.

-------------------------------------------------------

[Intelligence -1]: [3] -Failure-

Sneed pondered that last sentence. Mmh, Starbeard did, maybe, attempt to kill him. But the fact that Sneed was still alive probably meant that Starbeard wasn't actually trying to do so. In fact, Starbeard didn't kill Sneed. So that must have meant a sign of friendship from that Space Pirate!

Maybe he could give back Starbeard a sign of friendship by insulting or brawling against him? That seemed like a fair enough idea to Sneed, but that didn't mean he had to go through it.

Starbeard searches the ship for alcohol and stuff that no one has claimed as their own like spare money or abandoned weapons. If I find something, it belongs to me now.

If someone tries to take my weapons, attack them with said weapons until they stop. Try to not kill them.

After I'm done searching the ship, prepare to drive the ship towards Gavalere

Sneed smiled with satisfaction.

Ah, I feel so much more informed! Now I just need to decide what's the best way of showing my support for our growing friendship. Maybe a well spoken insult will garner some positive results. Hmm...

Hearing the meeting notification, Sneed immediately rushed out of its quarters, thinking of good insults along the way. As it entered the bridge, Sneed took note of Starbeard's presence.

Brimming with anticipation, Sneed nearly spoke, but restrained itself. Now wouldn't be the right time. The Captain's meeting was about to start. Sneed would wait. The moment had to be just right. Then Sneed would deliver a scornful remark that would leave Starbeard in tears. Yes, tears of joy that mark the beginning of a great friendship.

Attend the meeting. Continue thinking up good insults.

thanks captain

After this, Starbeard pockets his marker then prepares to pilot the ship.

While it was hard for him to adapt to a non-criminal life, he was not going to lose his crew yet again. A crew is like a family for him, but anyone who hurts the crew in any way possible doesn't deserve to be part of it, like Sneed, who called the authorities on them. Sneed was a traitor, but if the captain wanted to give him a second chance like he did with him, he was also going to.

Katerina furrowed her brow at all the mentions of Sneed and the engine. Out of all the crew members so far, Sneed was the only one she didn't completely understand yet. With that thought in mind, she approached Sneed, crossed her arms, and tried to think of a question to start with.

"Does a creature like you breathe oxygen?"

It was an absolutely random question, but it was all she could think of on the spot.

Sneed frowned as it listened to the conversation. Though it was encouraging to see everyone insult each other and embrace Space Pirate cultural norms, Sneed felt out of its element. Thinking up snappy remarks was a struggle. Sneed underestimated how difficult it would be. Yet, the rest of the crew could throw them out just fine. They clearly had more experience with that kind of thing. Sneed's planned retorts were weak in comparison. It dawned on Sneed that it wasn't going to be able to come up with good material on its own. More research would be required. Sneed made a mental note to do additional study into the basic philosophy and application of insults.

"Starbeard rhis reassigned to the rhengine room to be co-engineer with Sneed where rhey'll try and compensate for rheach other's troubling deficiencies."
"Compelling argument! And rhappreciable effort at dialogue! The pilot's chair is yours then, Mr. Starbeard, rhon the rhexplicit condition that you are not to ram the ship rhinto things no matter how good of an idea it seems at the time."

"That said, Sneed is still strongly discouraged from touching the engine in any way."

Sneed took note of its assignment. Simply linger around in the engine room and don't touch anything? Sneed's frown turned to an eager smile.

"Will do, captain! You can count on me!"

It would have the easiest job of the entire crew! What a delight! Sneed could just lounge around while waiting for the adventures to start. Just like Sneed imagined it would be!

"A fine question, fellow crew member Katerina! Like all Slimeons, I too am capable of 'breathing' oxygen. Though, many of us favor other gases. Nitrogen is a common favorite. I personally prefer Fluorine. It helps my body stay pleasantly viscous, yet still retain its slimy texture. But unlike other Slimeons, I do have a strong distaste for Radon. While being able to glow in the dark is nice sometimes, I just don't like the feeling of sluggishness it brings with it. Oh, and of course, I don't dare mess with Neon. After the great massacre of 8472 S.E., it was banned by the Slimeon government, and rightly so."

Seeing this opportunity to strengthen its bond with Katerina, Sneed posed a question of its own.

"Ah, but I shouldn't hog this conversation. Tell me, Katerina, what is your favorite gas to breathe?"

Make small talk.

"Oh. I'm sorry to hear that your planet was ruined. That's quite sad."

Sneed, realizing that Katerina might be depressed, thought about what it could do to cheer her up. If only Katerina was a Slimeon, then the solution would have been obvious. Sneed would simply insert two tentacles into her mouth, maneuver the tentacles through her operculum flap, and then tickle her respiratory cavity. That would cheer any Slimeon up! Unfortunately, that simple trick doesn't work with other species, as Sneed was surprised to learn. Thankfully, ruptured livers can be fixed by modern surgical procedures. Otherwise, Sneed probably wouldn't be here today.

"Ah, now I'm curious. How do humans cope with sadness?"

Turn 5: Finally, the start of the adventure

Thomas will go try to dispute the fine and get the last 5k credits waived, or failing that, just pay the fine.

[Space Lawyer +2 / Intelligence +3]: [1] -Critical Failure- (Damn, that's not a joke)

Thomas left the ship to dispute the fine in person, that would be faster. With a baggage such as his in hand, that would be an easy task. He entered the security post they just came from, and set to work.

He left the office dejected. Bastard, he thought to himself. He had faced what could have been called a living embodiment of police corruption, coupled with actual law knowledge. This officer, who was called R. Goron, had managed to use the situation to his advantage, doubling the amount of fine left to pay. Instead of 5000 credits, he had to pay 10000 credits.

Well, no one would knew.

Fine payed, time to sail!

The security setup:

Katerina and Thomas have access to all crew-relevant systems (which excludes the security grid that I'm in charge of).
Sneed and Starbeard don't have weapons access, but can work in engineering together instead (with AI oversight).

Once the two remaining crew members work out what portion of the fine they'll cover, set off to Gavarle!

The crew agreed to the following setup, for now:

Captain: Jim. J Barkley
Pilot / Navigator: Edwin 'Starbeard' Tex
Systems Operators: Katerina, Thomas Whitney
Ship's Boy: Sneed the 38th

Obviously such positions were not fixed, and could be subject to change if the situation asked for it. But having roles assigned to everyone managed to give a semblance of order to this crew of misfits.

Starbeard sat at the pilot's seat, finally feeling home knowing the ship's helm was in his hands. As navigating and piloting in this known system was a trivial task, he assumed both positions at once.
Katerina and Thomas managed the various systems of the ship. Sensors, shield power, atmosphere composition and gravity management... Katerina already had some experience in that field. Thomas had none, but the presence of the AI was a godsend.
And finally Sneed was perfectly content observing -and learning- from the others.

Thus Jim, on the prestigious captain's seat, barksaid: "To Gavarle!"

As in answer, the ship's AI repeated the destination.
"Coordinates locked, destination: Gavarle"

The HMS YOU'RE NEXT's engines roared, and our crew's ship finally took off from the hangar. The control centre of the Hub spaceport sent the various instructions needed to properly and orderly leave the landing areas. The ship slowly flew through a virtual path sent by the space traffic controllers.

They stopped to a halt, as a massive Bodacious-class Battlecruiser flew in front of them. The name of this formidable vessel blazed at the bow "ADN Meria", ADN standing for Alliance Defense Navy. It was joining up with a fleet of Galactic Alliance military ships. You wondered what was their destination, you guessed it was definitely for peacekeeping purposes though. Only Starbeard seemed a bit uneasy seeing this powerful ship.

With the way finally clear, you left the Hub. Once in proper distance of the station, Starbeard initiated the jump. Excitement was rising in the ship as space around the ship began to distort...
-40 Power

New Location: Gavarle, Capital Planet of the Emelus II System

The two jumps were performed in quick succession, not letting the ship recover its energy. You were now flying over Gavarle, and started approaching the planet's geosynchronous spaceport, connected to the ground with a space elevator.

After getting proper clearance, you landed in a hangar of the spaceport.

Search the place for a shop or market that sells ship equipment like weapons or that can upgrade our ship systems or weapons.
Or just one that sells normal weapons. We need weapons.

Explore the spaceport. Look around for interesting sights. Ask people what its like living here. Also ask around for information regarding the star Xoa and the creatures known as Black Riperii that apparently lurk around there.

Turn 6: The Megnat Spaceport (Planet Gavarle)

[Current Location: Gavarle - "Megnat Spaceport"]

As soon as the HMS YOU'RE NEXT has landed, the most wild elements of the crew stormed out to pursue their own devices...

Search the place for a shop or market that sells ship equipment like weapons or that can upgrade our ship systems or weapons.
Or just one that sells normal weapons. We need weapons.

Starbeard immediately heads for the nearest ship parts dealer. It is after all expected of a spaceport of such calibre to have a dedicated area to ship parts and equipments dealing.

He enters a weapon shop of the parts market. There is a girl at the counter, probably a mechanic judging from her clothes. She is browsing some tablet, probably to check their inventory. Starbeard appears in front of her, writing something on a notebook.

She reads, and points at one of the terminals of the shop. Starbeard grunts, and checks the shop's inventory for weapons. nnoyed grunts to insults, and short answers to borderline speeches of propaganda. Overall, life was safe and good in Gavarle. Everyone benefitted from the proximity of the Jump Gate, and the protection of the Alliance Navy.

Starbeard needs weapons. But to get weapons, you need money.

Katerina looks for a bar.

With her own plans only known to her, Katerina headed for a random bar of the spaceport. She stopped at the Red Dust, a simple enough bar full of noisy seafarers. She stopped at the bar counter, and looked around.

A table full of men and women in uniform, probably the crew of a military ship.
A lone man with black glasses drinking from a whiskey glass.
A table with three men in civilian clothes. They seemed to be having an argument.
A bunch of men playing a game of snooker.

The barman, a burly man with many tattoos on his exposed muscular arms asked you what you wanted to drink.

Brimming with anticipation, Sneed rushed out of the ship while flailing its tentacles, bumping into nearby crew mates along the way.

Explore the spaceport. Look around for interesting sights. Ask people what its like living here. Also ask around for information regarding the star Xoa and the creatures known as Black Riperii that apparently lurk around there.
"Captain, let me know when you're ready to contact our mission provider. Per your approval, I'd like to head the negotiations of the terms of our employment, as I believe I would be the best member of our crew for the job."

"Go for rhit rhand initiate negotiations - Rhi'lll take a walk around rhe spaceport in the meantime."

Follow Sneed and get a feel for the spaceport. What is a telling detail that jumps out at me?

Sneed went on his envisioned Exciting Spaceport Discovery, followed somewhat closely by Jim.

The Megnat Spaceport may not have been as imposing as The Hub's spaceport, but it clearly won in one aspect: architecture and refinement. The massive main hall's ceiling was a dome projecting the vast space outside. And in the middle of the hall, there was a gigantic pillar shaped structure. It was the end of the space elevator connecting to Gavarle's surface. And where the walls were a metallic gray in The Hub, they were turquoise and green. They were also decorated with pictures and short videos of the surface.

Sneed was awed in front of this colorful display of planetary wealth. He asked around people for their lifestyle, without any consideration for personal space. He got various answers, from annoyed grunts to insults, and short answers to borderline speeches of propaganda. Overall, life was safe and good in Gavarle. Everyone benefitted from the proximity of the Jump Gate, and the protection of the Alliance Navy.

[Luck +0]: [3] -Partial Success-
Sneed's frantic asking was for the most part, fruitless. Most people he asked never heard of Xoa, or just knew Black Riperii by names. Only one somewhat more knowledgeable person from the rest had an interesting tidbit of information:

"Xoa? Isn't that some star of an uncharted system? In the... eeer... Foot of Totome. Yeah that was that, I think. And Black Riperii? Some nasty creatures I heard, the navy forbid civilian ships from travelling through systems suspected of being inhabited by them. Heard they were able to tear a transporter in two."

[Intelligence +2 / Information Gathering +1]: [8] -Critical Success-
As you walked around the spaceport, your eyes caught an important detail. First, there were a lot of navy personnel around. Much more than what one would expect, even for a Capital Planet's spaceport. Furthermore, amidst the laughter and hearty agitation, you could feel tension. Was it because of the recent news? War was far from the system though, how curious.

With that in mind, you listened carefully to conversations from visibly tense individuals. There were many mentions of "something big" sighted in a system two to three long jumps away. An uncharted system, which fortunately wasn't Xoa's one. You could ask around to clear your doubts.

That man who just discussed with a group of marines smelled of clues.

"Thank you captain."

Thomas will try to contact Mr Lyon Hept, their potential employer.

Thomas immediately sent a call to Mr Hept using his communication device. The man who answered had a lax tone initially, and immediately perked up with excitement when he heard you called for the escort mission.

"Yes, this is Lyon Hept speaking. It's about the escort job for Xoa? Marvelous! (...) More details you said? Of course, meet me up at the bay 60A, in the civilian ships area. I will send you the coordinates."

Thomas headed alone to the rendez-vous point. A small cafe with an outdoor terrace giving over the infinite space. A man in a suit waved at Thomas, the ex-lawyer felt immediately more relaxed seeing a fellow civilized individual. He seemed in his late forties, as could attest his gray hair.

Both men shook hands as a greeting.
"I am Mr Lyon Hept, researcher in energy engineering. You are Mr Thomas Whitney, right?"

[Luck +2]: [2] -Failure-
"Thomas... Whitney... this name rings a bell, wasn't it... Oh! Oh. I remember."

His tone changed quite dramatically. There was displeasure in his voice.
"Who wouldn't have heard of you? That was quite the... spectacular case. So you are now a freelance ship captain?"

civil use? ha ha no
only use the good stuff
Starbeard like big gun that boom
not civil weapons where?

This is clearly not everything they have for weapons. Ask for other types of weapons that are not for civilian use, are explosive or are illegal. Then go find someone that isn't Sneed to tell them about the weapons. If I can't find anyone, go to the bar because alcohol is part of a healthy diet for a Space Pirate.

"Wow, this place is great!" Sneed yelled loudly, annoying several passerby. "I'm so glad I got to visit! Oh! I should grab some souvenirs before I leave."

Search for a souvenir shop or gift shop that sells cheap trinkets that I can afford. Buy as many as I can. Also, if I have a camera or recording device on me, then take photos and record videos of myself standing in front of a variety of places. Act like an obnoxious tourist. Afterward, return to the ship and tell the Captain everything I learned, if he's there.

Interlude 6.1: The Megnat Spaceport (Planet Gavarle)

The separated members of the crew were all busy with various matters.

Katerina raised an eyebrow.

"The hardest thing you've got. I need to forget the dismal reality of my situation."

Once she gets, and pays for, her drink, Katerina walks over to the table with the lone man, sitting down and staring/glaring at him curiously. She doesn't drink yet.

"Spoken like a true sailor. Comin' right up."

Katerina watch as the barman selects various liquors and mix them with professional precision to create a clear blue nectar. This color is soothing to her mind. She takes her drink, thanks the man and pays for it. [-5 Credits]

Then she sits right in front of the lone man. She notices that the ambiant music is stronger at this table. The man sends a neutral look toward her as she takes a seat. He then returns to quietly sipping his drink.

He just acts as if Katerina wasn't there, and she just glare with what she calls curiosity.

Then go find someone that isn't Sneed to tell them about the weapons. If I can't find anyone, go to the bar because alcohol is part of a healthy diet for a Space Pirate.

The woman sighs.

"Got a licence?" She notices your inquisitive look. "You know, Heavy Weapons Licence, Navy Licence, that sorta stuff. We ain't selling the good stuff to anyone, laws and all you know."

Starbeard probably thought something akin to "I hate this lawful place". Dejected, he left the place to find a bar where he could complement his diet. He stopped at the most suspicious, rowdiest looking one he could find.

He entered the place. If there was a gathering place for the space equivalent of bikers gangs, that was the place. Muscular and menacing-looking spacemen of various origins, having noisy fun in a place where alcohol abounded.

(Er, Starbeard has no money by the way :/)

Walk over to the man who spoke with the marines and greet him in my own charmingly doggy sort of way. Inquire as to his day and business in Gavarle and, if asked, explain mine in a cryptic yet fascinating manner.

Jim stopped following Sneed for a bit, to accost this man who tickled his nose for mysteries. Like a true gentledog, he greeted the man in a polite and canine way. Explaining his business in Gavarle with refinement, of how he was there for matters concerning one of the many secrets of space, and of how he saw this glint of intelligence in this man. As fellow wanderers of the star ways, they were bound by the stars in a way.

The man's tension started disappearing, and he gladly answered to Jim.
"An exhausting day, to be frank with you my canine fellow. I'm a prospector, and I came back recently from a mission in systems of the Albert Belt. Great mining places there! If you were in the field, that would definitely interest you. Well, our mission had to be aborted before we could check the last system. The Navy butted in, and at first we were annoyed, but not too worried. Sometimes such unfortunate events happened when they were field-testing some new toy in an uninhabited system."

[Canis lupus familiaris +1 / Diplomacy +1 / Previous Roll +1]: [7] -Critical Success-

He leaned toward Jim, and whispered to him.

Weeeeee!

Sneed went for the nearest souvenir shop, like a child released in a toy shop. With only 5 credits in hand, he couldn't buy as much as he wanted. He bought various pin, some of the local food specialty, and a pouch of -authentic- star dust. He even got a picture of a Longneck Wapster, an animal native to Gavarle!

He was glad to have his all-purpose com device, which could also take photos. He took pictures of himself going through the station and the shops, making sure to immortalize every moments of his journey in electronic format.

[Luck +0]: [2]

After a long and fun adventure, our slimy friend decided it was time to get back to the ship. A good sailor should always be there on time, after all. He glanced around, not recognizing the area. Where was he now?... It seems Sneed was lost after wandering around too much. He was in some sort of repairing bay, some huge freighter was undergoing reparations.

His tone changed quite dramatically. There was displeasure in his voice.
"Who wouldn't have heard of you? That was quite the... spectacular case. So you are now a freelance ship captain?"
"Oh, no. I'm not the captain. I'm just acting on his behalf as he attends to other matters aboard the station.

"And about that case: I know what you're probably thinking, and, no, I didn't take a dive on it. I don't expect you to believe me, but I believe I was set up. But, until I can find the evidence to prove it, that's all just conjecture.

"What I think you can believe is that, if I had taken money to lose a landmark case, I sure as Space Hell wouldn't be risking my life protecting a bunch of scientist from space monsters for 50000 credits. So tell me, Mr. Hept, what exactly is a Black Riperius?"

"We are all victims in some way mmh?" he replied with a sarcastic hint in his voice.

He made a quick apology, and returned on the matter of the job.

Find the barman and ask if I can get

If no, ask for any quick jobs I could do for easy money or a drink, then find another bar if there are none.

[Luck -2 Charisma -1] [1] -Critical Failure-

"The word free is not in my vocabulary. You pay up or you get out."

A nearby group of brutish and drunken men overheard the barman, and surrounded you. They started provoking Starbeard. "Look at that loser who can't even afford a drink." "Just lookin' at 'im is making me feel poor."

One spit in his beer and poured it on the (temporarily) ex-space pirate while shouting "Have a drink mate!", cuing all the men to laugh. That was not going to end well.

"Huh? Was this not the way I came from? Am I lost? Eh, no matter! I'll find my way back, I'm sure of it!"

Sneed came across a tall humanoid who looked like an anthropomorphized bird. He had ecru feathers and yellow eyes.
"Hey kid, are you lost? You look like a tourist, that's not a place where you should be wandering. You could get hurt."

He noticed you were taking pictures of the massive freighter. If he had lips, he would have been smiling.
"Hey, do you like big ships?"

"Typically someone would have wondered why I'm glaring at them by now, and would have asked. Why don't you?"

Not moving an inch, the man answered in a relaxed tone.
"When you live a life like mine, you stop caring 'bout people's glares. Anyway I can help a lady with such intense glare?"

"And what if your estimates of it are wrong, or it's not alone?" asks Thomas. "Our ship is combat capable, but I'm not sure we can take on something the size of a battleship."

Interlude 6.3: The Megnat Spaceport (Planet Gavarle)

(With 2 in combat, very high in all physical skills and being armed, this should be easy. I'm more worried that the space cops are probably going to hunt me again.)

[Combat +2 Dexterity +2] [4] -Success-

Starbeard suddenly drew his Space Pirate Saber, deftly beheading the first and worse offender of the group with one fell swoop. Inebriated to a very high degree, the drunk men didn't react immediately. The loud sound of a blasting flintlock gun brought them back to reality, and they attempted to drunkenly scram for their lives.

The moment the bang rang out, an alarm followed suit as the barman had already ducked behind the counter and activated pressed the emergency button.

[Luck -2] [2] -Critical Failure-

As it turns out, the bar was filled with not very recommendable individuals. A slew of them toppled the tables and dunked behind these makeshift covers, drawing their own blasters and other exotic weapons.

Starbeard had no choice but to take cover, lest he too would turn dead cold. A ballet of blaster shots livened the bar, turning it aflame.

Everyone could already hear the sounds of the spaceport police arriving...

"Information about the local sectors. If you have any, I'll pay you for your time.
I'd also like to know about creature's known as Riperius. I have a job that might end in me meeting a few pretty personally."

Have a tiny sip of the drink. Is it stronger than I'm used to?

The man finally lifted his gaze toward yours. He had vibrant eyes, burning with the flame of one who lived through many tales.

"Oh, Black Riperius, we used to hunt them back in the day. Good target practices, even better to practice dodging. So you want informations? Heh, you couldn't find a better man. There are many systems around Em II, maybe you could enlighten me by explaining me some specifics of your job?"

Katerina then took a sip of her drink. It was strong, and surprisingly flavorful. A good deal stronger than what she was used to, but nothing above the hardest she ever got. Though that nice flavor was very welcome.

"Well, then, I suppose that alleviates most of my concerns about the job. I expect we'll take the job, but I am curious: what exactly is this scientific mission for? Is it purely exploratory, or is there something special about Xoa?"

Lyon chuckled, and Thomas wasn't sure if he was really amused or just mocking him.
"All stars are special, though probably not that much to neophytes. We are going to Xoa to make some sort of diagnosis, and for some light experiments on hyperspace and subspace. Nothing illegal or dangerous, I assure you. I would tell you more, but we need to keep some secrets in the job. Competition is everywhere."

He then sat more comfortably, and asked:
"Any other questions?"

Thomas noticed on a nearby screen how a violent gunfight was currently occuring in one lower level of the spaceport.

Buy this man a drink and leave him to his business after establishing his name and maybe some contact details.

Following that, continue gathering information on the station, keeping in mind the alarm raised by the hyperspace dragon.

[-5 Credits]

Jim magnanimously bought the man a drink for his company, exchanging contact details and other courteous manners. The man was named Marc Fletchap, a private prospector with respectable experience. He had explored a few uncharted systems for the job purposes, and seemed pretty knowledgeable about exploring the unknown.

Homo and Canis then parted on friendly terms, both heading toward their respective ways.

[Intelligence +2 / Information Gathering +1]: [7] -Critical Success-

Jim strolled around, following his nose and trusting it to pick interesting information around. With the knowledge of the alarmed state caused by an hyperspace dragon in mind, he was even more attentive to details. A fleet was gathering in the Albert Belt to deal with the issue, and many military ships had to stop by Gavarle to resupply.

From this influx of military ships appeared many disturbances in the schedule of the spaceport, thus leading to the rise in tension.

Now about this station... you were on the main level, the same as the last level of the space elevator. There were more upper levels, and these were usually dedicated to specialized personnel and special ships. Lower levels had everything from living areas, hangars, factories, repair bays and storage areas. The station was a city in itself.

Apart from the threat you knew of, nothing seemed out of place. Located in a very safe and stable system, the planet Gavarle enjoyed peace and undisturbed capitalism to its inhabitants hearts contents.

Then amidst these common matters, he heard of some interesting infos which didn't seem unrelated to the hyperspace dragon. A separate set of rumors were saying some previously unknown systems not far from the Albert Belt had suddenly appeared out of thin vacuum. Some other said it wasn't only happening in the Albert Belt though, and that it was a natural yet unexplained phenomenon. Others said it was a conspiracy staged by the alliance government to justify illegal colonization and assimilation of new systems.

Cheerfully introduce myself. Ask my new friend what his name is, what species he is, what he does for a living, and what he knows about this freighter. Also let him know that I'm lost and in need of guidance back to my ship. Offer to introduce him to the rest of my crew if he helps me out.

(Edit: Unexpectedly still busy, so I didn't rp, but I did extend my action a bit)

"Name's Ronav, I'm a Larkiul working as a mechanic in Megnat. You see that freighter? It's currently on a revision, nothing too serious, but you can tell that ship travelled the stars a lot after seeing the state of its engines."

Ronav guided Sneed through the repair bay, leading him back to the hangar of the HMS YOU'RE NEXT. He was on a break, and a pretty good natured individual. He loved his job, and gave some tips and tricks to Sneed after the latter explained that was his first adventure at space.

Eventually they arrived in front of the HMS YOU'RE NEXT.
"Ooh, a Honesty! I can't count how many of them I worked on. Oh hang on, let me send you a little something. With that, even a novice like you should be able to fix some stuff. Just don't mess with dangerous stuff until you know a bit more of course."

He then sent Sneed a very useful reference manual about the Honesty-class Corvette, which was uploaded on Sneed's com device.

Thomas noticed on a nearby screen how a violent gunfight was currently occuring in one lower level of the spaceport.
"Yeah, when do we head out?"

Upon seeing the screen, Thomas didn't need to read Starbeard's text to realize he needed to hurry.

"Sorry to leave so suddenly, but my crewmates have alerted me about urgent business I need to take care of."

With that, Thomas sped off towards the bar Starbeard was in.

Interlude 6.4: The Megnat Spaceport (Planet Gavarle)

Send everyone a message that says:
help Starbeard enter bar and kill idiot who try mug Starbeard but now everyone fight and fire arround also cops
come quick
also fire is both gun and flame
bar is burn and people shoot and is all chaos help
Then find a better cover and hiding place while avoiding any atacks with my high dex. If it is safe, shoot from cover to the closest ones.

(Dex isn't going to help dodging blaster shot, everyone be aware of that!)

[Combat +2] [4] -Success-

Starbeard analyzed the situation, and noticed the counter had a reinforced section. He moved there, and started exchanging fire with the other groups. He thinks he landed a hit on one of the men from the leftmost group. No time to check though, the heat of the battle didn't allow that.

Fortunately, it seems the gunfire weren't focused on him alone. He had no idea why, but he wasn't going to fret over it.

Suddenly a huge explosion shook the whole bar. Starbeard crouched and held on to his cover, managing to resist the blast. His ears were ringing and his vision a bit blurry.

There was light, a wall had been blown up by a grenade [quite illegal!].

"Telling a shady man in a tavern exactly where my ship will soon be in space sounds like a good way to get attacked by pirates.

But then again, if we're attacked by pirates, maybe the more 'colorful' members of the crew will start to take things seriously. That, or die. Both possibilities are honestly nice."

Katerina takes a deep swig of the drink before continuing.

"They want an escort to Xoa, wherever that is... They need protection from Riperius."
Upon hearing Starbeard's text(?), Katerina immediately disables her comm device.

"A fair judgement. And I do appreciate the trust you put in this shady fellow."

He knocked on the table two times, beckoning Katerina to come closer so that their conversation wouldn't end up in unwanted ears. Katerina did as instructed, approaching a little. The man started talking in a soft and very audible manner.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He did notice Katerina fiddling with her com device, and threw at her an inquiring look.

Get more information about this "systems out of thin vacuum" thing. Have stars literally just popped up in the sky or is this some kind of hyperspace lanes thing? I don't actually know how FTL works here. Could the hyperspace dragon be related to this?

Jim approached a cosmopolite group. Two humans discussing with a floating machine, a Pelagiac (some sort of fishmen) and two Mycons, a species of tall sentient mushrooms using their many tendrils to move and interact with the world.

The dog captain inquired about these strange rumors. A Mycon, the one who was deep jungle green spoke in muffled mushroom speech. His translating device thankfully said in understandable words:

"Stars, planets. Whole systems are appearing. Two kind: those that seemed to just be hidden then revealed, and those that just seemed to be born out of nothing. Utmost bewildering. Main theories:
1) Foremost one. Natural phenomenon hiding portions of the galaxy. Cause unknown.
2) Secondmost one. Unknown overspace-born or underspace-born entity can create whole systems.
3) Thirdmost one. Advanced galactic species possess technology to create systems.
3) Fourthmost one. Systems are pulled from another galaxy, or another universe."

The machine added with a bass-heavy voice:
"You forgot the most important. One fact remains quasi-certain, all systems appeared in regions of registered fluctspace."

"Oh right, the Flux." one man said.

Jim inquired about fluctspace, or "Flux". The machine replied.
"Regions of normal space where laws of physics are said to keep fluctuating. Not much is known about these, as entering one is 100% lethal. Some say these regions are areas where normal space connect with hyperspace and/or subspace."

[What you know about FTL travel]:
You know of three means of FTL travel. Two are commonly used, and the third is at an experimental stage.
The first and most used one is the use of hyperspace drives. Your ship takes a path through the hyperspace to cross immense distances.
The second is the use of Jump Gates. Using a Jump Gate allows for instantaneous travel to another connected Gate. You don't know the principles behind them, but they are the pinnacle of Alliance technology, and were reverse-engineered from Gates used by other species.
The third is the use of subspace drives. You have no idea how those are different from hyperspace, having just heard of it as some trivia.

He then sat more comfortably, and asked:
"Any other questions?"

Thomas noticed on a nearby screen how a violent gunfight was currently occuring in one lower level of the spaceport.

Lyon smiled.
"We will be ready to set off as soon as tonight by Gavarle time. Let me send you the rendez-vous point."

[Rendez-vous point uploaded]

Noticing Thomas hurry, Lyon stood up and offered a handshake.
"I see you are a busy man. I hope you are not leaving because you noticed some resentful mob going after you?"

He obviously tried to make a joke, but it fell rather flat. Thomas forced himself to smile and laugh -rather well if he had to say-, and left prompty. Noting the blazing bar's location on a map, he headed for the place.

"Thank you so much, Ronav! You're a fine fellow, and the gift is much appreciated. I'll put this manual to good use, I promise!"
Ecstatic after having a great experience with its new friend, Sneed waved goodbye with its tentacles as Ronav left. It entered the ship, noticing that no one was there. That didn't affect Sneed's good mood though. It would take much more to put a damper on Sneed's great day.

"Hehe, you remind me of when I left my home planet! I wish you good luck in your space career Sneed, you will definitely need it! You will realize how wonderful and ruthless a place space is."

He waved his feathered arm at you, and left to return to the repair bay.

Then Sneed entered his small room. The walls were plain and his mni desk was plain. He made sure to liven up the place with his souvenirs, sticking the picture of the Longneck Wapster above his bed. That way the Wapster would watch over Sneed in his sleep. Then he pinned the various badges and pins all over the walls, and finally stored his 'authentic' stardust in a drawer.

Once all of that was done, Sneed strolled toward the space pirate party location.

While exchanging fire with more fire, send another message:
enemy grenade blow up bar wall hurry before bar collapse

[Combat +2] [4] -Success-

Taking advantage of the confusion caused by the explosion, Starbeard unleashed another salvo of precise shots to the stunned men. This time, he was sure of it, he took down two of them. The exchanges of shot had already diminished a lot, with men of both sides being incapacitated.

Suddenly a loud voice amplified by a megaphone came from outside.

"THIS IS THE MEGNAT SECURITY POLICE, DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND GET OUT OF THE BUILDING. YOU ARE SURROUNDED, SURRENDER!"

Thomas will run to the bar, trying to avoid the police, or at least trying not to look like anything more than a curious bystander.

Thomas ran as fast as he could to the bar. He could see the spaceport's police converging toward the same location as him.

Crap.

When he arrived, the place was already locked down. Barricades had been deployed around the blazing building, and multiple armed men were taking cover behind them, aiming at the bar. There was even an Enforcer Drone on the place, and a few more drones hovering around the location.

Sneed skimmed through the digital manual, taking some mental notes all the while heading toward the bar. It was an interesting manual, pretty complete and with great step by step in-depth explanations. With that in hand, he would be able to work out his mechanic skills on the ship.

[You get a +1 Mechanic bonus with this manual, only if your Mechanic skill is 0 or 1]

Eventually, Sneed arrived at the location of the bar. The party seemed over. Augh! Was he too late and missed the party?

Quickly conceal my weapons, find a place to hide and play dead. If someone finds me,
act as if I was drunk and fell asleep and didn't notice the fight in my sleep. Don't let anyone take my weapons.

Starbeard shoved his weapons in his coat/pants/underpants. Any place would do at this point. Then he executed his best imitation of fast asleep drunkard.

(...)

He heard shouting and running, probably some people tried to escape through the hole in the wall. Then the thud and slam of bodies falling to the ground.

It seems like people complied and dropped their weapons. Starbeard heard a group of people entering the bar, more shouting, some guy trying to fight back and getting pacified. And more pacified grunts.

[Luck -2 Very Suspicious -1]: [4] -Failure-

Starbeard suddenly felt a sharp sensation of pacification. As in, a powerful electrical discharge running through his body and knocking him unconscious. If only Starbeard knew, the assault unit was equipped with scanners to detect concealed weapons and energetic activity. His flintlock rifle energetic signature was still vivid, unfortunately.

Arrive at the bar, might as well see what Starbeard's doing in there.
Thomas will casually sidle up to an officer and ask what's going on.

Jim arrived at the bar, where he noticed Thomas casually conversing with an officer.

[Diplomacy +2 Nice Clothes +1] [6] -Success-

"A gunfight erupted in this ill-famed bar. Probably an altercation between two criminal groups. The perimeter is secured, so don't worry. See, the assault team has already taken care off the case. Yep, these ones are definitely going to rot in a prison. Good riddance."

Thomas could see a bunch of unconscious men being hauled from the smoking bar by men and alien in full body armor.

Uh. Wasn't that Starbeard among the unconscious and cuffed men?

Sneed arrived right at that time.

If I don't know from general knowledge, buddy up to some of the police, introduce myself as a fellow officer of the law, tell them I'm actually here looking into some criminals (technically not a lie!) and that I might be able to more conclusively identify some of the malcontents involved.

Definitely yes, this bar should have some form of surveillance system! It usually helps keeping some would-be troublemakers in check, and it is definitely useful to catch thieves. Well, then now how to access such footage?

Jim walked up to a nearby cop. Acting as if he was back to his old job, he introduced himself as a fellow officer of the law.

Jim's look and speech were close to fully convincing the policeman. But the procedures ingrained in the man's head threw a wrench in his perfect approach.

Katerina wanders around the station for a bit, searching for a hand-held weaponry store.

Katerina left the bar, and looked at a map for the nearbiest weapons store. She eventually finds herself in said store, the shopkeeper hails her from his counter.

"Hey, welcome. Can I help you?"

They are selling all kind of weaponry there. From handheld weapons to rifles, from traditional ammo using ones to blaster-type.

Starbeard slowly gets up and tries to communicate with whatever found him. If they want my weapon, try to convince them that is an outdated and useless old gun that doesn't work.

I just want to take a look, he can come along to make sure I don't tamper with anything if he wants to. Maybe I could even help him out!

[Diplomacy +1 Canis Lupus Familiaris +1] [8] -Overshoot-

"Well..."

Before the human policeman can finish, a large humanoid figure appear behind him. Some sort of bluky anthropomorphized gray wolf wearing a police uniform.
"I rheard everything, let that one pass Ketner. RHe rhas a rhonest smell, and we could use some assistance there. Rhey, come with me."

Oh, a 'Wolfman'. A peculiar breed of genetically modified human, or wolf. To be fair no one remember which one is it. Derogatory term Homo Lupus, which is seen as a big insult to them.

On his badge, Jim could read his name: F. Dremus. He followed Dremus into the sole armored police van out there. Now separated from the outside world, he turned toward Jim.

"We retrieved the recordings, rhere, rhave a look."

He pulled a device with holographic display. Some sort of mini computer, in short.

[Jim may look at security records of the bar]

Take photos. If I see Starbeard, wave at him and yell out my best insult (feel free to roll for this :P).

Sneed was a bit dejected. That was quite the one of a kind occasion he missed after all! He absent-mindedly took some snaps of the place, until he noticed the unconscious cuffed body of Starbeard being hauled like a potato sac by a man in body armor.

Well, he didn't know Starbeard was unconscious, and with all his vocal strength, he shouted.

"HEY! IF THAT ISN'T MY FAVORITE [garbled words in some weird language with an offensive feel]! HEY LIMPBEARD! STILL CAN'T HOLD YOUR LIQUOR?"

A policeman showed up right to the left of Sneed.

"Excuse me sir, you know this man?"

Thomas will go the jail to act as Starbeard's legal counselor, while simultaneously working on a posting to the local planetary network for a replacement crewmember, just in case.

[Will keep your action in mind]

While waiting for Starbeard's transfer to a detention ground, he posted a small ad for a replacement crewmember. He was feeling quite jaded.

Try to wake up again. Otherwise, just have dreams of destroying planets and getting drunk.

How incriminating is this footage exactly? Do we get a nice shot of Starbeard decapitating a dude at the very start or is it a bit unclear? Is it a CCTV feed or some kind of sophisticated future surveillance?

In short, evaluate the odds of Starbeard dodging a murder rap for this.

[Constitution +2] [4] -Success-

Starbeard, thanks to his incredible constitution, manage to emerge from his stunned state. Everything is still blurry, and his balance is all off, but there is one thing he is sure of.

Somewhere close, he hears these words carried by Sneed's voice:

"HEY! IF THAT ISN'T MY FAVORITE [garbled words in some weird language with an offensive feel]! HEY LIMPBEARD! STILL CAN'T HOLD YOUR LIQUOR?"

A plain, traditionnal CCTV feed it is. Jim starts the recording shortly before the situation exploded. He quickly locates Starbeard, leaning against the counter and scribbling on his notebook.

Then a group of men comes to him, surrounding him quickly. From their unsteady walk, they are clearly heavily inebriated. One of them empties a glass of liquor over Starbeard's head, and everything degenerates from that point onward. In less than a second, Starbeard has drawn his weapons, wielding them with both hands.

One man got his throat cut open, and another got blasted at point blank range by Starbeard's Flintlock Blaster. Well, that's pretty damn incriminating. Following that, two opposite groups of humans and non-humans start exchanging fire, with some aiming at Starbeard.

Rewinding a bit more, Jim notices that these groups were seemingly already staring daggers at each others before Starbeard even entered.

"I see. I can definitely fulfill your first demand, but the second is probably out of my bounds. That's quite the unconventional stuff you want, you could find these in some shop for space exploration tools. I only got basic and powered knives out there."

The man pointed at several weapons, and also showed you their catalogue page. The prices ranged from 1250 to 7500 Credits. There were more sophisticated weapons, but those were too expensive for your budget.

"I personally recommend this model, a very reliable weapon, able to switch from semi-auto to automatic mode quickly and easily. Low chance of misfiring, and easy to maintain. It costs 4000 Credits, ammo included."

You had a wide range of choices. From handguns to submachine guns to rifles, all able to fire in space.

"If you don't mind following me then. I would have some questions to ask you."

Sneed followed the officer, who asked him a lot of questions. His relation with Starbeard, if he had already killed a man, if he had already travelled to certain planets, if he came in contact with other criminal groups, if he recognized the faces of some ugly peoples...

(Ellipsis, Starbeard is now at a police station, speaking with Thomas)

Thomas will try to get a private meeting with Starbeard, and maybe even try to post bail.

After a much needed ellipsis, Starbeard was finally facing Thomas for a meeting. Thomas remembered the dumbfounded look of the officers when you told them you were his lawyer. You became a bit more infamous to the few that knew your reputation.

Interlude 6.X: Still in The Megnat Spaceport (Planet Gavarle)

Thomas will talk with Starbeard about what happened,
maybe try to work out some kind of self-defense plea or something, and see if hw can get him released in rime for the mission.

Write a long and confusing story.
...Starbeard join crew when retire from crime life but some trouble happen last planet when slime cause hangar go boom and corrup police steal Starbeard money then Starbeard need drink at bar but there group of criminal that drunk try mug Starbeard so Starbeard cut criminal head and hide when the criminal group start kill all and burn bar with explosion then Starbeard play dead on ground to not die after explosion and fire and cop shoot Starbeard on ground and Starbeard think that shoot people on ground is rude and that being space pirate is equal to criminal is racist so now Starbeard on prison for kill criminal who maybe was murder and drunk so Starbeard should be reward instead for let cop find the criminal group and jail every bad guy at bar because criminal still free and do crime if not catch when Starbeard start trouble at bar also Starbeard still want drink because at bar Starbeard have no money becauuse steal by other planet cop...
Basically I was just there then the criminals attacked me. I was just trying to get a drink and if I had not started the fight they wouldn't have caught the criminal groups. Also the guy who I killed was clearly a drunk criminal so nothing of value was lost.

Alright. Thomas breathed in, breathed out. That wasn't the first case of completely fucked client he ever had, and he had won harder ones. Taking into account Starbeard's past, the charges pressed on him, his account of the events... maybe it wasn't a bad idea to use the "mental illness" bit to defend his case.

Thomas prepared his defense. Knowing the situation, there was no doubt a trial would ensue. Eventually, the trial happened. And in a fit of luck, it even happened within the same day, amazing!

[Intelligence +3 (in) Space Lawyer (+2) Hard Case (-2)] [7] -Critical Success-

That was the element where Thomas felt at his best. Ah, it did feel good to be back "home". The stern face of the judge, the inquisitive and accusing looks of the jury, and him, standing proudly there wielding the power of law. His defense was superb, flawless. He created a absurd yet believable backstory for Starbeard, how he had to fight tooth and nails as a child, how his abusive parents sold him off, and how despite all that, he always wished to reform. To become a better man. How he was struggling with mental problems, how injustice stood in his way and prevented him from turning over a new leaf.

Surely Thomas thanked the fact Starbeard couldn't speak during the trial, for he got more than one puzzled look from his client.

And finally despite all the odds against Starbeard, the space pirate was acquitted. They ate and drank the words of Thomas like sweet honey drugged with a strong narcotic.

[Starbeard is free!]

"I will take that. Where would I find a space explorations tools distributor?"

Katerina takes the 4000 Credit rifle, then seeks out said store.

"Thanks for your purchase, you won't regret it. Here, I will add in a few more clips as a little extra. Now, a place where to buy tools...[he gives you detailled directions to a shop]"

With a new rifle in hand and a pack of ammo clips, Katerina heads for the aforementioned shop. There, she does find handheld laser drills for various uses. From smaller ones used to pierce little holes in hard materials, to slightly bigger models.

With her remaining credits, she could at most buy a medium hybrid laser drill (5000). Hybrid models were less energy consuming than pure laser drills, and more powerful than pure resonance drills. But they also required more maintenance than pure models.

"..and that's everything I know about my pal Starbeard. Anything else I can do for you, officer?"

Continue cooperating. Once the interview is over, ask if I could go visit Starbeard at the police station. Do so, if permissible.

Sneed had to answer several questions, and even some about himself! They also took a photo of him, maybe it was as a souvenir? Woah, they even created a file just for him, the honor! Then Sneed was allowed to leave, but wasn't allowed to visit Starbeard.

Eventually the trial happened, and Sneed saw how Thomas defended Starbeard. Who knew the poor space pirate had such a tragic story! What a brave man, ah what a brave man! He felt his tear ducts prickle.

"Rhwe ractually have a guy on staff. Rhonly one of the crew that isn't some flavor of mad."

"Anyway, rhif I can help any further, here's my contact rhinformation, though rhI'd like to have my name kept out of any murder trials if possible, rhyes?"

Peace out for now, bidding officer Dremus a good day and making sure to catch up with Thomas about what the deal is with Starbeard's case.

Quote from: Cpt. Jim Barkley, to: Ship's Legal Counselor Thomas Whitney
Starbeard's likely facing a murder rap on account of direct camera footage of the scene. How's the situation?

"Rhunfortunately, you know this is not possible. I will note you rhas a rhelping civil party. After all, isn't that what you are?"

Then before you left, you exchanged contact informations. He then surreptitiously slipped you a last word right before parting.
"The spatial police is always looking for unaffiliated contractors for certain out of our bounds missions. If you ever feel like working with us, do contact me. Farewell Captain Barkley."

(...)

Jim caught up with Thomas at some point, and he also witnessed the trial. Darn was Thomas good. Really good.

Thomas was elated; this was the first time in a long time he had gotten to win a case. Maybe things wouldn't be so bad in this new life; maybe he could even learn to enjoy it.

As they walked out of the courtroom, Thomas put his arm on Starbeard's shoulder. "You know, when I joined this crew, I figured we were just doomed to failure after failure, but, today, we just got our first win. And I choose to believe it wasn't a fluke. From now on, we're going to be winners, and you know why? Because we're just that damn good! I saw those surveillance videos; you're pretty good in a fight. If you just used your talents to keep us safe instead of getting into trouble, no one would be able to mess with us. And the same is true for the rest of the crew. If we can figure out a way to work together, I don't think there's a force in the universe that can stop us.

"Now, what say you I get us some drinks and we celebrate our new found camaraderie?"

Thomas will take Starbeard to a (safer) bar and buy the two of them some drinks.

Interlude 6.XX: Still in The Megnat Spaceport (Planet Gavarle)

Katerina bought the drill, then looked around the store for some more... exotic items. Exciting things.

Exotic items... unfortunately that was a pretty general store. Most stores had roughly the same goods, with slight variants from places to places. Some gadgets caught her fancy though. Magnetic boots/gloves with com device link (500 each), portable rebreather in case of oxygen failure (200)...

She received a ping from Jim, inquiring about her whereabouts, but her com device was still in silent mode.

Thomas was elated; this was the first time in a long time he had gotten to win a case. Maybe things wouldn't be so bad in this new life; maybe he could even learn to enjoy it.

That was their first victory as a crew! That had to be celebrated! No hug though, as Starbeard made clear. Sneed felt like cursing his naivety: of course a hug wasn't a space pirate-like display of affection! He would have to think of something else...

They went to a bar chosen by Thomas. Fine and respectable establishment, one where they wouldn't encounter any nasty individuals. Each with a full glass in hand, they rejoiced and thanked the stars for this luck.

[Hollistic Insight +2] [8] -Overshoot-

Jim was close to the bay where the HMS YOU'RE NEXT rested. He decided to take a shortcut through an empty storage bay, full of containers of various origins. It only took a few seconds for Jim to realize something was wrong with the atmosphere. Feeling restless, he quickened his pace, hoping to quickly leave the place.

Suddenly at a turn, he came across the wrong place at the wrong time. There was an Acrean -a people of humanoids with slimy skin and a very roughly squid like head for the lack of better description-. That Acrean was floating in midair, being choked by an arm with no body attached to it.

Oh crap. Jim quickly processed what was going on. Optic camouflage. Probably very advanced one. Bad, very bad. He shouldn't have witnessed that.

He could feel the invisible being turning toward him.

There was a very fine line to walk when witnessing assassination of this caliber, and for law enforcement and the regular citizenry alike it led straight the hell out of here. Of course, Jim Barkley was neither of these - he was a detective, dammit, and this was what detectives did as far as he was aware.

"Rhlook on the bright side - rhI definitely didn't see nothing!"

Put the assassin thing off-balance with witty repartee before engaging it in single doggy combat if for some reason it doesn't see fit to respond with polite understanding and/or a valid reason to be choking this person to death. Hopefully the Acrean will be able to help somehow at least.

Also ping the rest of the crew with a high-priority distress call with coordinates attached, which I assume is a thing that space adventurers ought to have (or at least something I as a security expert ought to have).

"You know, I was thinking, after this next mission, maybe we should go into private investigating or bounty hunting," Thomas says to Starbeard with a glass of whiskey in his hand and a somewhat glassy-eyed look. "Captain seems pretty good at sussing out clues, I can handle all the legal permits and make sure we don't get arrested and stuff, and you can bring in the perpetrators. I mean, you might have to bring them in alive, which I know isn't exactly your modus operandi, but I think you could handle it, or I guess there might be some contracts where they don't care about their animate state; they just want the body for proof."

Thomas notices the distress call from the captain.

"Oh, hey, Captain's calling us! And with coordinates. I bet he's lonely because we went drinking without him. Wait, can dogs even drink. You know what, that doesn't matter; we should go see the captain."

Thomas will pay for their drinks and try to lead the others to the captain.

I apologize for the 2-weeks long delay. Sickness combined with apathy combined with studies... Anyway, let's get this back in track.

Interlude 6.XX: Still in The Megnat Spaceport (Planet Gavarle)

There was a very fine line to walk when witnessing assassination of this caliber, and for law enforcement and the regular citizenry alike it led straight the hell out of here. Of course, Jim Barkley was neither of these - he was a detective, dammit, and this was what detectives did as far as he was aware.

[Fortitude +0 Ex-Cop +1] [1] -Critical Failure-

Jim hasn't even finished his sentence, that he sees the muzzle of an advanced weapon appearing out of thin air. Ungentlemanly! But effective, Jim barely has the time to roll away as a blast of energy fires toward him.

A searing pain sparks in his right side, and his whole body starts burning and feeling cold. Jim has been hit by a silent blaster shot! He doesn't have time to assess his wound, but his mind is still holding on, and he seems to be able to walk. Ah, not really, his rear right leg is unresponsive.

He has to act fast!

Katerina returns to the ship, more heavily armed than before, and a little drunk.

Katerina starts returning immediately to the ship, wobbling a bit from slight drunkenness.

[Luck -1] [6] -Critical Success-

Some kind soul decides to pick up Katerina in his hovercraft, bringing her to the ship in no time. He drops Katerina there, and promptly leave for his hangar nearby.

Having paid the drinks preemptively, the trio is able to leave the bar easily. Sneed slaps Starbeard on his back, in an tentatively aggressive way. Starbeard doesn't react violently, surprisingly. Maybe he didn't feel it, actually.

[Average Luck +0] [2]

The last members of the crew return to the ship. Being a little tipsy, they take a little more time than needed.

They will never get there in time, but they don't know that.

Interlude 6.XX: Shoot the Dog (Planet Gavarle)

Well, in for a penny, in for a shitton of hurt. Fight for my life!

[Combat +1 Dangerous Wound -2] [4] -Okay-

If you harm a dog, the dog obviously bites back. With an enemy armed with a ranged weapon, rushing in head on would do no good. Jim fakes running away, instead taking cover in the corner of a container. His side is burning, but he manages to keep his breathing low enough.

Jim hears the sound of a body dropping, and then very faint steps. Focusing on his senses, he attempts to predict the moment the assassin is going to come around this corner.

Jim waits. The man is prudent. A second that seems to extend for several minutes passes, and Jim lunges toward a faint rustling sound.

Closing his jaw on the apparent empty air, he manages to bite something hard, an arm in some protective metallic gear. The optic camouflage flickers a bit, revealing a hand with four digits. There is no gun in that hand, oops. Wrong arm.

Katerina turns on her communicator, and attempts to contact the captain. If she does not receive a response, she tries to find him manually.

Seeing no one is inside or around the ship, Katerina naturally attempts to contact the captain. The moment she turns on her device, she sees the notification of a distress signal nearby.

That's definitely not normal. She starts walking toward the location.

(Alright then)
Thomas will continue drunkenly heading toward the captain's distress signal.

Extrapolate the location of a more sensitive location than an arm (four digits, a taste and a scent ought to be good enough to get a vague idea of the species at least) to bite down on, such as a throat or a face or those dangly bits that you don't know what they are.

To apologize for the delay,

Extrapolate the location of a more sensitive location than an arm (four digits, a taste and a scent ought to be good enough to get a vague idea of the species at least) to bite down on, such as a throat or a face or those dangly bits that you don't know what they are.

[Combat +1 Dangerous Wound -2] [7] -Overshoot-

There is one nice thing with humanoid. Their head is always at the same place. Jim lunges toward the predicted location of the brain vessel, successfully closing his jaw on a face wearing some sort of mask. His fangs sink deep into the flesh of its aggressor, making Jim's mouth run with red blood.

He hears a small explosion as the silent blaster misses its mark, and then feels the other arm closing on him. With the corner of his eye, Jim sees the blaster pointed at close range on his left flank. He experiences a vivid burning pain thrice, and then everything fades to black.

Katerina, deciding a distress beacon is probably quite important, begins to run towards its location. She prepares her new shiny gun.

Katerina arrives in the storage area where the distress signal came from. Then she heard some noise of fighting. Heading toward the source with her trustworthy gun, she sees the Captain lying in a puddle of his own blood, right near the body of an Acrean.

She hears the rushed steps of someone leaving the place ahead.

Katerina immediately notifies the spaceport authorities of the emergency and attempts to give the captain emergency treatment, using scraps of clothing (either from ripping her own clothing or tearing some non-bloody clothes from the dead Acrean). She decides saving his life is a wee more important than pursuing his attacker.

With her agitated background, and her past as an ex-asteroid prospector, Katerina picked up some rough yet useful first aid skills. First, she took out some cartridges from a reloading clip, and opened them up. She poured the gunpowder on the Captain's wounds, and then shoved a torn cloth on it to stop the bleeding.

That would do for now, hopefully. Then she contacted the authorities.

Thomas, Sneed and Starbeard arrived not long after, before the authorities.

[Luck +2] [7] -Critical Success-

Thanks to your earlier call to the spaceport security, medical assistance arrived right after. No first aid was needed, and no wallet grabbing or hand slapping could happen as such.

The canine captain was thus brought to Megnat's hospital.

(...)

[Constitution +0 Luck +2] [8] -Overshoot-

Some time passed, and Jim had been saved. And thanks to the healthcare he subscribed to as a dog of risk, he had nothing to pay for. All his wounds had been healed by state of the art medicine, but some of his cybernetic enhancements had to be removed for his survival.

That was really annoying to Jim, but he was still alive at least. Wasn't the first time some hooligan blasted a hole in this body of him. It had been a while since he felt this close from a normal dog.

It had been a hectic day, and the crew was back in the HMS YOU'RE NEXT. Maybe they would reflect on this day, or just continue on with life, unfettered.

Starbeard tries his best to express his wishes to hunt the "almost-murder" and protect the captain and his crew with his life. He then returns to his room in the ship to rest and recover himself. Having his captain almost die hurt him a lot.
