Title: DFBT The Dwarf, Community Podcast: Wait, I thought this was dead? What gives?
Post by: tahujdt on March 29, 2013, 11:08:30 am
DFBT the Dwarf is, to the best of my knowledge, the only community podcast for DF. In it, we look at succession forts, review mods, examine devlogs, and wear socks. Lots of socks.

We have a twitter here (https://twitter.com/UristMcDJ) and a Facebook here (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Urist-Mcdj/134066806785483).

The pilot episode can be found aquí (http://m.spreaker.com/user/5712525/dfbt_episode_1_the_beginning?sp_redirected=true).
I will probably be co-hosting with DVNO in the future, so feel free to pester him too.

Please suggest any ideas we can add.

Disclaimer: The host is a teen boy. Voice subject to change without notice.

EDIT: Episode 2 is out, and can be found here (http://www.spreaker.com/user/5712525/dfbt_episode_2_finally_he_updates).

What sort of things will you cover?
Also the only audio editing software I've ever use is Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)). I am not sure how much use it would be.

I was thinking FOtF, mods, succession games, etc. Maybe, if we can set that up, interviews with various people.

You should do a DF fan of the week/month thing in your podcast.

I suggest two different sequences; one to introduce new people to the game and help them gain a feel for the mechanics of DF, and another involving advanced tips on the most effective way to build a dwarven calculator using nothing more than bloody kitten skulls and the front right upper teeth of your most recently born bulletproof vests dwarven children.

Stuff like that, yeah. Also, it would be awesome if I could interview Meph direct from Germany (or Cairo, or Buenos Aires, or Tokyo, etc.), but that probably wouldn’t happen. Does anyone know how to set a voice modulator to sound like a dwarf, BTW?

Might wanna ask Rainseeker that one, IIRC he did all the dwarf voices in Soundsense and the dorf shorts on the DFTalks.

Other than that... uh... lots of ale and mental retraining to have an obsession with socks might work.

Audacity should be fine.

Ideas?

Hmm.

Regularity would be very, very good. Make every episode have something like...
A mod spotlight. Newbie tips. Community/succession game news. Interesting happenings and discoveries. Mundane stories made awesome. Things likes that.

I've been practicing to do the sound editing for nother pod cast in where they talk about Twilight Zone, episode by episode.

I'd be very interested in doing the sound engineering. I've also done a fair reading in how to maximize sound quality in folks are doing it over skype, and what not.

If there are any people who want to volunteer, then please take one step forward now. Otherwise, everyone else besides the person they want to go take one step backwards.

Seriously, though, I ask because I was going to put together a short episode, just to test the reaction. If I make a website, is it legal to put in google ads, since it's "just for review purposes"?
So, if there's anything you want to do, please say so, otherwise, I'll go ahead and do it myself.

It would probably be a whole lot smoother with a script. Oh well, this was just a practice run anyway.

Yeah scripts can make things just awkward as well being able to actually discuss things should help though.

If you're the only one doing it, then yeah, a script is good. If there are multiple people, a script would be awkward.

Checking it out now, and even though it would be nice having bullet points on a paper(Not sure if ya do) so you don't have pauses every once in awhile; While it probably doesn't seem to bother others, stuff like that annoys me a bit.

Now onto my thoughts about the idea in general. It probably is the best thing to grace DF next to Putnam and DFhack. Giving modders a voice to put to them, along with a chance to discuss topics on their latest things would be useful instead of a forum post. If you ever want to take questions live, get a twitter account set up and point people to it before you start a podcast. Or don't and just find questions and look at them during the Podcast.

Could you speak a bit more fluently, please? Right now you're...speaking...like this, which is kind of hard...to listen to.
Also, your speech sounds forced, try to sound a bit more lax.

Just my opinion.

Also again, why not video too instead of just audio?

Well, yeah, I can do better, that was just a late night software test that never got replaced. I'm waiting on DVNO before I do the next one, but at this point I'm probably going to go ahead and do it myself.

Personally I don't think it needs video. In something that's mostly going to be people talking video is just going to be unnecessary and distracting.

Video is not distracting, especially if it's filled with relevant pictures and clips from the game. Sort of what TotalBiscuit does on Youtube in some of his videos.

EDIT: TotalBiscuit isn't the best example, but I think you get what I mean.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yv73cRpbQaE might be a better example.  Try imagining that without video.

Video can add quite a bit, but in this case I think it would add unnecessary complications.  Maybe later once yer more established.

Finals are coming! School's almost over!

Anyway, I get to exempt two finals because of my A standing (they give you two exemption coupons which you can only use on classes in which you have an A), so I will be getting off extra-early on Tuesday. Expect a weekend update (but don't expect it too much), and a big episode on Tuesday.

Finally, I'd like to thank my little sister for making me an 'ON AIR' sign for my bedroom door.

I know I said it in Charmcrafted thread but I will repost it here:
New episode of DFBT is up, featuring this fort. (http://www.spreaker.com/user/5712525/season-1-episode-4)
[/shamelessplug]

[Exaggeration]Sonny Boy, I was doing shameless plugs before you even knew how to use a computer.[/Exaggeration]

I will check it out, but I may, by which i mean I will, be extremely critical...^^

Edit: What are you using for recording? If Audacity you could try noise canceling... also, try to get someone else on the podcast, it may help you to make it longer if you discuss fortresses between 2 people.... also, why censoring? This is a brutal game, curse words are the least of the problems while talking about it^^

Edit 2: Quoting devlog: fine, rereading posts in fortresses= potential spoilers=needs warning...

Edit 3: Quote by itself means nothing, try to discuss it, once again second person may help... Nevermind, some of the quotations have discussion... all of them could be like it though...

Edit 4: Overall it was ok, but do consider recording the parts separately, if you do not want to have someone working with you that is, by parts i mean different segments, like the Mod of the Week stuff... That way you can take several takes of the part and choose the best one, as in some moments you were stuttering... it also allows for blooper reels in future...

That is all from me^^

Also, if you do find a cohost (I just read this thread, not very carefully I migth add) just ask them to record in audacity as well, just like we do in Balanced Podcast (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0ynDint3hegzZ11tsOaQTdfkwtJWxUCB)... Ha! Counter Shameless Plugged! A bit off-topic but hey! But yeah, you can merge both tracks using Audacity, it is rather easy, really...
