Title: Novelty Tilesets (New: Dependable 8x8)
Post by: GoombaGeek on July 30, 2012, 11:29:27 am
So, I was bored and decided to make some fun tilesets! They aren't designed for any real use or purpose, but to look neat (well, the 6x6 is pretty useful if you have good eyes and a large embark). I'll add more when I make them!

Doodle 6x6
(http://oi47.tinypic.com/i1wcug.jpg)
A 6x6 tileset loosely based on my own handwriting. The letters are hard to read but it has a fun whimsical flavor (I hope). Overall it's 96x96.
Doodle 16x16
(http://oi50.tinypic.com/fbkbvm.jpg)
This is a 16x16 tileset that was done completely freehand*! It's a 256x256 image.
*I used Undo a lot, and I had to draw the guides for the wall/line tiles by mouse so they matched up, and filling was done with the mouse, but other than that...!
Phat 256x128
(http://oi47.tinypic.com/52vtc.jpg)
Now that I think of this, this tileset should be dedicated to ObeseHelmet because I was probably inspired by him somehow. IT'S YOURS NOW, BUDDY!
Comic Sans 16x16
(http://oi47.tinypic.com/33zcot3.jpg)
Nobody can handle this.
Basic 8x8
(http://oi48.tinypic.com/14bak4.jpg)
Just a simple 8x8 I made for legibility and consistency. Some glyphs are extended or tweaked to look better in your fortress, like O and # (they both fill their entire tiles).
Crystiles
(http://www.anonmgur.com/up/897fceff68a98433dde83acb0faccc6e.png)
The font used in the American second generation of Pokémon games (specifically Crystal) and the other tiles stylistically edited to match. A close relative to the Basic 8x8 (but, Crystal's font was 8x9! some letters will be ever so slightly changed).

Here's the 16x16 in action during worldgen!

More Comic Sans fun, again in worldgen:

The 8x8 makes text a little bit odd but it really shines when displaying game graphics:

Reminds me of Yoshi's Island for some reason.

Here's another Action Screenshot, this time of the lap of (crowded) dwarven luxury!

Please note the gold statues.

It's ASCII like, but it's not. The world map looks amazing and hand-drawn, almost like when i open my Hobbit book up and see the map of the world, that was the 1st impression i got when i saw it. And even though i know it's made of blocks, it doesn't look like it.

Brilliant set! :)

Maybe shift the blacks and grays up in luminosity, so that it's bright colours on a solid gray background? I think it'd add to the effect.

I love it as it is, though. It's like some kind of twisted offspring of a neon sign, a little kid's drawing, and the Matrix. The one wonky corner that doesn't quite match up is bugging the hell out of me, though :V

I've always wanted to do one of these, but I guess you beat me to it :p

One recommendation: fix the "corner to left" sign so it lines up properly.
Other then that, awesome!

makes me think that the dwarves drew there own maps of the world and the fort. looks awesome.

That corner was actually spotted about twenty minutes after I released this by my friend. I fixed it right away, too, so if you downloaded the Doodle 16x16 it's fine! I just didn't feel like uploading a new worldgen pic :P

But you're all forgetting about the tiny tileset!

It's great for me because I have good vision and I can see mostly everything in my fortress on one screen.

Here's a bedroom complex capable of housing about 45 dwarfs, actual size:

All right, enough of that, it hurts everyone's eyes.

Here's an example of my lovely handwriting. I think it looks great because I'm used to it :P
(http://oi50.tinypic.com/29uycky.jpg)

And here's the entrance to my fortress in the midst of the natural world. An issue with this particular edition is that undifferentiated (it's in my .d_init, maybe not in yours) ground and open space looks way too similar and you might get confused and make hallways out into a drop (like I did :P ). Luckily, the fix is to not disable variegated ground tiles which is pretty easy.

Yeah, that's a flat meadow, but the red sand hallway has maze-like channels in it. If you can tell the difference between those tiles you win a gold star cookie.

I'm tempted to do little 16x16 graphics except that's a really small size to be doing any Artistic Working in. I'll try out making tiles for each dwarven profession :D

Hell, go for it.

This is one of the few tilesets that works as a middle ground between mainly ASCII users and tileset users, as in both can use them and still be familiar with what represents what and without complaining about it not being "vanilla" or "pretty" enough.
Even I, who are mostly restricted to using artful tilesets due to me being nearly blind as a bat, could use this fine without wanting to gut my eye-sockets with a spoon. :)

Haven't worked that out yet, graphics are hard :P

I figured out the tile x and y and turned graphics on but they don't load. Should your graphics .txt file go in the raw -> graphics folder?

IN OTHER PRETENTIOUS AND HIPSTERY ASCII NEWS

I present the Phat 256x128!
Now, some of you may be thinking "You got those backwards, you idiot! The x dimension comes first!"

Well, this is an ASCII set wider than it is tall. You can even tag it "more to love" in all your MySpace photos, if you aren't already texting and drinking coffee while driving. Now, here's my explanation that almost makes this set sound logical:
Enough of that, here's a dwarven sweatshop!

I think I saw that on the wiki! I like the walls.

SPOILER ALERT: I'm not actually graphically talented which is why I went with extremely plain ASCII :P

Anyway, here are vague civ graphics, using the NORMAL, ADVENTURER, GUARD, ROYAL GUARD, ANIMATED and GHOST template that graphics_example.txt told me about. It's probably not possible to get a kobold adventurer in vanilla but if you use the bodyswap command in DFhack then you get a slightly different kobold sprite :D

Same deal with the ROYALGUARDs, I don't know if they even exist but if they do then I'm ready for them :P

It's not quite unedited (₧ is very wide, and a lot of characters needed a bit of fudging, and the top row is a better font for clarity) but it's close. Horribly close.

Have fun!

I'm loath to say it, but Comic Sans makes a good font for proportional DF. The characters are so stupidly wide and bouncy that they fill a 16x16 square way more nicely than any number of less evil fonts. Of course, the contents of that 16x16 square are another matter.

Hm, how about...some kind of creepy tileset, with overly sharp corners and eyes on the letters and stuff? Or perhaps some sort of font inspired by Russian language or something? Or Greek letters?

I hate to say this, but I like the comic sans.  I'm not sure how I'd feel about that after a few hours of play, however.

Anyways, my suggestion would be to replace all the english alphabet with either Tengwar or Cirth (Dwarven ruins).  They wouldn't match 1 for 1, so you'd have to fudge it a little, but you could come up with some interesting stuff, I bet.

Before doing anything of the previous, I wanted a good base to start out on. Here it is.

I think it's a dependable little tileset: I made it with adventure mode in mind so some symbols are extended to look better (like #). The square root sign is terrible, though.

What are you thinking of doing? The creepy tileset, something based on cyrillic, or something based on Tolkien's runes?

I swear I'll get around to requests one day, but here's a doubled and smoothed default curses pack. It looks really, really good on large monitors.

For every normal tile, you have four tiles, representing a 400% increase in productivity. Even better: it looks like you're hacking the Matrix instead of playing Dwarf Fortress and is completely illegible at further than two feet, so snoopy co-workers will be unable to detect your game-playing habits.

Another tileset! This one uses the font from the second generation of Pokemon games (the Game Boy Color ones).

It's related to the Basic 8x8, too.
