The spam bots honestly aren't that bad, I've seen three a week at the very most.

Also, I don't know about you but I think we have plenty of people here. You probably see most of the same people since you probably hang around a few boards more than the rest.

The bots aren't posting illegal stuff, though. Just a truckload of kitchen sales.

On one hand, DF feels a bit underrated.
On the other hand, Bay12 feels like a good, big, happy family. If a bit of an insane one.

We're fine, but I expect an influx of new players when DF2013 finally surfaces.

Hmm... These are both very good points. I suppose you are right, although I still feel the community is quite small for a game this good.

Other sites discuss Dwarf Fortress quite often, so it's not like you'd be strapped for discussion. The communities are a lot more sizable than you'd expect, though the quality of the threads is highly subjective. /vg/ and /tg/ have pretty good Dwarf Fortress threads. /tg/'s are better, but pretty infrequent. They're too busy with their dragon dild- uh, edition wars.

I know three people who play but don't use forums and two who play but only lurk.

Not really. It just means no one's ever noticed. Bring out the witch-hunting pitchforks. Plus we do occasionally get attention-seekers and shock spammers.

The Internet.
Once a place of knowledge and trust, of giving and peace.
The internet, a place of hate and porn, individuality and amorality. Now a place of advertising and misinformation, #YOLO and surveillance.

Now it is corrupted by trolls, spam, spam-bots, flame-wars, and more.
Since the dawn of time. The only difference now? The internet corp. giants seek to plaster full names on every bit of information, every bit of information about those names forever known. Coming last summer: Your life story, brought to the internet by the internet.

Above this cliff, there is a bloody mess of corpses, magma, dementia and experiments. This is Bay12. This is the sanctuary.
The Cliff keeps out the flame-wars, the trolls, the bored children, the ragers. It holds black hats away, in fear of It.
How would you even know? Flame wars, derails, trolls, bored children, black hats and screamers - are sometimes indistinguishable from the fanatic enthusiasm of this community! One only has to bring up katanas, core beliefs or politics to invite universal shitstorm.

Seriously, katanas suck.

Also, the community seems to be slowly fading.
It's been growing. Average amount of registrations a day: 45.11

We need to find a way to attract people without calling trolls in.
Not really. It's quite niche in its own right and the only active attempt to attract people from forumites here I remember resulted hilariously in an influx of shock spammers. As others have said, the people who are interested in it will find it from the various youtube videos, tvtropes, news articles, blogs, articles from websites with larger traffic like cracked or lebbit, traditional/general game boards, subforums and stories, all spread about passively.
It's a sanctuary because of the high number of people who maintain civil composure in the face of wicked temptation. That and the fascist rule of benevolent and great Toady One the Great. As long as the number of people joining isn't so great as to displace the well mannered group, even the newcomers will settle into the relaxed atmosphere of this place and all will be maintained.
Report any suspicious activity to moderator death squads.

Yeah, the other choices are fine, but you don't have to worry about touching someone's innards if you stab them with a spear. Also, they look damn good in formation. Sure, they're a little unwieldy up close, but what does that matter when you stop their fun before it even begins? Weapon of the year, all years.

What about a halberd? I mean, you get the pointy end of a spear, plus a giant axe head on a stick. Sure, up close it is absolutely useless, but you have to let them get that close.

Considering the fact that you're holding a gigantic spear-headed axe on a stick, that isn't likely.

The extra weight is a liability unless you're on top of a wall where you have the convenience of lopping off, well, anything that comes into reach.

Looks weighted well to me. How would it be a liability if it's not unwieldy, that weight far from the pivot would if anything actually be better for more force behind every blow. Halberds are awesome.

Eh what? Halberds would rarely ever get longer than 2 meters. You could proficiently take down any close threats that aren't so close they're in your face. You mean pikes? Those were the incredibly long spears. Halberds have all the benefits of a two handed axe with the extra benefits of a versatile axe head to fend off heavy infantry, and hopefully cavalry too. The only weapon that'd give the halberd a run for its usefulness would probably be the bastard sword I'd reckon. Most all other weapons, including most kinds of swords, to get so close to a halberdier as to make a halberd useless would render their own weapon useless too. You'd still be facing someone with a staff and a hook, and both would probably just pull out their knives and begin stabbing each other in the face at that point anyways. Barely even close to being useless.

granted the knight would win in the 1st charge but the internet flame war would be hilarious
seriously light Armour plus katana plus on foot doesn't beat heavy Armour (still maneuverable) plus lance and heavy sword plus War Horse.
plus knights dont do sissy crap like calligraphy

im sory for the rant i just find it annoying how so many people think samurai were the greatest warriors ever and the hole katana thing.

any my favorite weapon in the era would definitely be the horse and lance (my military sense is vary romantic and gota love the cavalry charge )

Rome and Carthage would like to have a word with you. Several, grueling words with you. Even the Gauls can claim victory.

Also quite funny in that when the Greeks fought some tens of thousands of Gaelic raiders, what happened was not that the spear was only good at mid-range, but the celtic sword was only good at short range.
Spears > Swords, most of the time at least. A heavy shield held close to an enemy spearman's hands is damn lethal.

However, the greeks had military cunning. They brought down sparta, which was like over 9,000 times bigger than greece.

What I would love is a halberd that is just a bit shorter, and instead of having a sharp thing on the back, make it have a flat surface.

With a heavy enough materialm (iron?) you can have an axe, spear, and warhammer (the flat back) in one weapon.
I still prefer dual-wield hatchets however.

You could also attach whole thing into whip and make it act like nunchuk.

The greatsword is a big two-handed sword. The zweihander is a German version of the greatsword, which works better because of German Engineering. The claymore is a kind of American-made explosive used to mine gold in the forties.

I forget, what's the difference between a zweihander, a claymore and a greatsword?
The zweihander is a German version of the greatsword, which works better because of German Engineering.
As far as I know, sometimes the blade had certain points where it wasn't sharpened on purpose, so that you could grab it from that place and and use it to hit with the handle (for armored enemies), or for more precise stabbing strikes.

Cats breeding at 110% the speed of light causing FPS problema in RL.
Cats Cant bread when moving faster then light, in fact they should Un-bread.
wait a minute...
Using Einstein's theory of Special Relativity if we load al the Cats into a mine cart then accelerate it so it is moving faster then light we can actually prevent a catsplosion after it happened.

Cmega3 you are a genius!

... We need to find a way to fend off these attackers. Also, the community seems to be slowly fading. We need to find a way to attract people without calling trolls in.

What do you think?
A few things that come to mind.. (all of which are varying degrees of good & bad)

Don't allow new accounts outside of '@gmail.com' email addresses.
Don't allow new accounts outside of north american/some-other-list-of-countries IP address space.
Don't allow new accounts to create new threads, until they post in an already existing thread.
Don't allow new accounts to create new threads until they have posted in several existing threads

and my personal favorite...
Don't allow new accounts to create new threads until they have posted in several existing threads and several weeks of time has passed between posts.  This gives the community time to report the posts and mods to delete the accounts before they start spamming.  Add in '@gmail.com' email registrations only for extra tasty fun.

Remove the Gmail and IP thing and I think we have a way to fend of Spambots.

You'd also need to let new accounts create threads in the Help Section since that's the reason most people register in the first place.

I don't agree, but I do agree that a single thread or forum to attract trap the spammers would be a good idea.  You could even call it "The Spam Folder - If you're a spammer, please post a new thread here".

Another option is: Limiting brand new accounts to one post (or thread) per day for their first 5/10/whatever posts is also another method of reducing their impact.

That way, you get the perfect method of spammers/spam-bots identifying themselves;  They post once per 24 hours, they can only start threads in one forum only spammers/spambots use, and no humans would ever post there.  Spam-bot flypaper, activate!

Couldn't think of a better way to kill this forum. With all the bay watchers expelled from the internets, that would mean they would have to disperse into the various governments of the world, biding. First the space stations, then the world.

Congratulations, you have managed to create the Bay12 World State by restricting entry to Bay12! If you restrict Bay12 entry, you restrict democracy!

You know, I really think we shouldn't do anything. Everything we could do would be extremely authoritarian and might end up restricting the amount of people we get into the forums, and ultimately lead to it's death. There's a baseline number of people who go AFK, it's just natural, but if it catches up with the amount of people joining you have a problem.
