Title: comrade shook draws things
Post by: Shook on April 08, 2018, 04:34:49 pm
... For you!

So yeah, i know i'm not the first one to make a thread like this, and i know there are a couple of threads for general (f)art sharing, and those threads are great and should absolutely keep going. So why am i being a special snowflake? WELL LET ME TELL YOU:

I've been doing a lot of thinking (and some writing) about who i am as a person and what kind of person i want to be. Long story short, based on various factors and feelings and the fact that i can't stand playing evil characters in video games, i've concluded that i look up to people like Bob Ross and Mr. Rogers. I know i'm probably a bit too temperamental and occasionally trollish to actually be truly like them, but dammit, i'm still going to at least try being a good person. :v

So, starting small on that with what i can do, i'm gonna offer you guys free requests for drawings, condensed in this thread because i don't want to spam the other threads. I'm not be the best around by a long shot (see: deviantart page in signature), but hey, it's good practice and you guys have some crazy and fun ideas from time to time. Here's how it's going to work for now: You come up with ideas, and i'll draw them as i see fit (which is USUALLY in line with intention). I may say no for any or no reason, but i hope not to do that too much. The amount of effort i put in will vary, from sketch to fully coloured and shaded, largely dependent on how i feel and how complex the request is, and the medium will be either digital or traditional by my own choice. Also, for now, no NSFW things will be done. You may also offer as much or little criticism as you want, though i'm probably not going to do any significant corrections on a drawing. (mostly due to how i work)

"But what's the hitch?" you ask wisely. Well, at most, it's that you may also have to contend with personal drawings in here. No true hitches besides that; all i want to do here is to have fun and make people happy, and while i'm at it, figure out if this really is what i want to do. I'd call it self-exploration but that sounds lewder than it is. :V

That being said (and i feel like there's absolutely no smooth way to approach this topic so i'm just gonna approach it with the subtlety of a jackhammer), i'm running out of money, so IF - AND ONLY IF - you're feeling super wealthy and find that you want to support me doing this, i just recently set up a Ko-fi page (https://ko-fi.com/comradeshook). You absolutely don't have to, and i feel like a shit for even mentioning it, but it would be super appreciated. I'm not doing this whole gig for money, there are FAR more lucrative ways to spend my time, it's just... Well, probing the waters, i guess? If you'd rather spend your money on actually important things (i.e. Toady), that is totally fine and fair.

Anyhoo, open fire lads and ladettes and alads!

Methinks Comrade Shook needs a proper CHALLENGE!

Quote
Few days later you appear at the gates of City of Blich (or what's left of it) with your royal entourage, and challenge the dragon to a duel!

The Dragon roars in a laughing manner but accepts the duel.

Quote
4

You charge against the dragon and poke his leg with a lance, and he breathes fire at your direction. The cloud of flames engulfs your horse and sears your legs and face and hands. You tumble from the horse and then roll away while the few courageous squires pap you with snow to extinguish the flames.

You and your entourage then outrun another fiery breath of the creature, while the dragon roars in amusement.

Either draw the entire comic or the bolded part.

I believe in u.

Sorry i can't be arsed to clean or detail most of it. Also probably not going to do every comic ever being requested, this is like 8 sketches in one go. :V

Ouf, i mean no disrespect but i currently find that almost impenetrable to read, in between my being non-english and addled by sub-optimal sleep. If you can pick out and possibly condense a smaller passage you'd like to see drawn though, that might be a thing. :v

siht tfel em koohs.

Also!

We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

The concluding paragraph kinda sums up the idea of the poem. Basically, the Greek hero Odysseus has returned to his island after the events of the Odyssey. Here he's growing old, and wants to once more make a notable journey suited to one who strove with gods.

The image I, personally, have is of an old man surrounded by his old crew, looking wistfully out at a turbulent sea. But I'd be interested to see your take, one which lends itself to your artistic style! :P

Hooh, shit, sorry, fell into a really bad slump. Not because of your request, don't worry (though i sadly have to report that i don't have a good idea for it at the mo'), i just got blindsided by Bad Feels(tm) out of nowhere, which DIRELY COMPLICATED doing anything that wasn't just a distraction. Really inconvenient timing for that to happen, i actually have a few things i need to be doing. :I

Nevertheless, i have been working to break out of it the past few days, so i'm not ENTIRELY without doodles.

The garrison I currently serve in has a goose infestation. They have taken over the smoking corner and attack anyone who gets too close. Smoking indeed kills...through geese. Use this as inspiration however you will.

AND I MAKE A MINOR RETURN AGAIN

Bad sleeping has been making me feel kind of blah, i really should consider sleeping at less terrible times. Feeling blah also means i haven't had much energy or motivation to draw anything, but to say that i have nothing would be a lie! First, some doodles and/or WIPs:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And now, the good stuff!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Rather experimental, but i really like how it ended up, even considering the relatively rough lines and shading. It's pretty rare that i delve into coloured lines, but with this success, i might try it out some more. Obviously would have to narrow in on some slightly less terrible choices of colour, but hey! :v (also yes i will get to your thing Fenix, don't worry)

Admittedly super mega sketchy but i've already drawn for like 2-3 hours today on a thing that i can show you tomorrow, i feel a bit lazy at the mo'. :P

I would trust him with my life, but not my treats.
Very wise, for as much as we may enjoy the company of our canine companions, they are not known for their restraint around treats. This still applies even if they may be unusually bipedal. :v

Also, bonus thing: Yesterday, i was looking through my old drawings (oh god they're terrible) and then felt like trying to redraw one of the characters. So, allow me to introduce you to an 8 year old drawing (which i put quite a bit of effort into at the time) and a very recent remake of the same character (which i put a whole lot less effort into):

I'm not sure when I'm going to actually put it into the game (the dragon is likely plot boss material), but here's a demonstration of the mechanics that your drawing inspired.

Yo that is hype as hell, not often you get to see pole vaulting leap attacks in video games, especially against dragons flying around the edge of a definitely-fatal drop into oblivion. I kinda feel like i should finish the drawing now. :V
BUT, SPEAKING OF ROCK!

Spoiler: brrrrrrrrrr (click to show/hide)

MORE ELEMENTAL DINOSAUR SPIRIT, technically not quite finished because no shading. The background flirble being dark and semi-transparent was actually a happy accident, i drew it on a white layer instead of a transparent one, but couldn't be arsed to redraw it (even if it only took like 20 seconds), so i just turned white into transparency. Obviously, this affected the splotch too.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. C:
Now for a little detailing of my hypocrisy here: I know full and well that i've harped on people before for expecting comments all the time, and i still do feel that way, BUT! I totally get the other feeling as well. With the HD exbrosion, i was a wee bit down about how i'd actually put a fair bit of effort into something, only to be met with resounding silence almost everywhere (although mad thankings to the people who did say things to me <3). This probably sounds like i'm trying to guilt trip y'all into posting more, but rest assured that i wouldn't be so subtle about it; i fully understand that saying "i like it" to everything someone posts would get empty and repetitive very quickly, so by all means, feel free to uh, not do that. Which i guess is what you've been uh, not doing, but i'm sadly(?) not fully in control of what i feel. :V
Also, casual reminder that criticism is also most welcome, if you should have any. If not, that's also totally fine, it just means i'm doing things right. :P

ALL THAT ASIDE, have more spoop

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lines are a bit rough but i'm thinking about painting it, so line quality might not have to be tip top for that.

Edit: SPEAKING OF THAT

Interestingly, i actually styled the head after a rodent/rat, though obviously that's not easy to tell by now, what with all the metal bits and such. And sickly green colouration. Damm, I wish I had that evolution, I've always tried to learn drawing, but honestly I just can't get the hang of it xD.

All I wanted was to draw myself an avatar to use as profile pic here in the forums  :'(
Title: Re: comrade shook draws things
Post by: Shook on December 15, 2018, 07:41:58 am
You can do it, i believe in you! I NEVER thought i'd ever get to this level (and i still have much to learn!), especially not when i was dicking around in 2007 (which is where i actually started with pixel art, but i was so bad back then). I had pretty much "resigned" myself to pixel art, which i still have a soft spot for, but it wasn't really what i wanted to do. It takes too long for too small an artwork, and i've since discovered that my favourite part of drawing is actually the sketching, which doesn't look very good at a pixel art scale. That besides, in recent times, my drawing style just doesn't work terribly well with pixel art. :P

If i were to pick one piece of advice out of the many that have helped me, it is to have fun with what you're drawing. Not necessarily "haha i'm laughing" fun if that's not your thing, but, y'know, enjoyment, whatever that entails. Then you can look at it afterwards and think about what went well and what went badly, but regardless of artistic merits, you enjoyed making it, and isn't that the important part of a hobby?

Excellent. Some of that early stuff is Cortex Command mods, if I remember correctly. Brings back fond memories of that game. :)
Thanks, good memory! Cortex Command is what got me into pixel art (... and coding) in the first place, so i owe a lot to that game. The mods (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=250572089&searchtext=) still (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1334923306) exist (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=250568943), by the way. :v

Roboworm was 2016!?

/me feels too old for this.

Also I see your love for snakes and monocles is ancient, keep it up bruh v;
It is indeed, i was just too rubbish to properly draw sneks and lizards in olden times. At least monocles were simple enough. :v
And also yes, roboworm is that old, though it's worth noting that i reshaded it the following year because i felt like the original looked terrible. Much can happen in a year, it seems!

Also as usual i'm sorry for not having posted much, but exam project has been taking a shit ton of my metaphorical juice, so i've barely even been drawing for myself in the past week or two. I at least expect to be able to get back to it on the 17th, since that's the deadline for the project. Till then:

Spoiler: lizardlibrarian (click to show/hide)

I can't claim that your mods inspired me to get into spriting or modding, because I never got into those things. But I can claim that your mods provided me with lots and lots of joy and amusement, so thanks for that~

Also, that's a fine lizard you've got there.
Title: Re: comrade shook draws things
Post by: Shook on December 16, 2018, 08:08:59 pm
Mucho thanko! Also, you're most welcome. c:
I can't ask for more than for people to enjoy the dumb things that i make one way or the other, so i'm always happy to hear that that's been the case. Obviously would also be excellent if i had inspired someone to take up art/modding, but i'm not exactly going to hold it against them if that's not the case, that'd just be rude. It's entirely possible to eat chef-tier food without being inspired to become a chef. :V

Also i've finally turned in my exam project! Here's hoping i'll pass, but i think my chances are decent. Probably won't be in flying colours considering that i've skipped several steps, but hey, gotta make sure i don't die from the stress, already had a hard time due to losing some days to shitty mood. In any case, this means i no longer spend 5-6 hours a day on that shit, so hopefully i'll have more energy for doodling!

Speaking of that, have another lizardface, but in cold-ish climate.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fell into a really bad art slump, only drawn about one and a half things during the past two weeks (and one of them's not suitable for showing here), probably due to falling back into old (and bad) sleeping habits. I don't feel all that bad personally (well except today because the sleep deprivation is stacking up), and i've had a nice christmas and new years eve (and hope you have too!), i just haven't felt like drawing. Due to my grogged up brain today, this is the source of a lot of bothersome thoughts, but i'm almost sure that i'll be back to normal once i manage to fix my sleeping again.

Also, second thing: I'm thinking i'll return to posting my own drawings in the Random Things thread, because i feel like i don't really have a good reason to be isolating myself like this (this isn't meant as a dig at you others who have your own thread; y'all do great work!). The thread will remain open for requests (and commissions i guess, but it's probably better to PM me about that), though at the time being, i can't guarantee that a lot will be made due to the current slump. In any case, i want to express my supreme gratitude for all the interest you guys have shown, it is super flattering and you have warmed my heart countless times. C:

Is okay. First thing of decency - never rush the artist.

Take all the time you need, baltic bro C:

Don't despair, dear Dane! Don't deem daily drawings disastrous!

Eh, not ready to make that jump yet. Perhaps one day, but don't hold your breath. One has to be careful with the kind of things that can be linked to ones name. :V
