Title: I'm In Love With This Character Set
Post by: Warlord255 on December 18, 2008, 06:35:23 pm
Also, circles.

After seeing this character set - Dorten's improvement to Savok's tileset - on the wiki:

I decided I had to try it out.

With smooth walls, you can actually make circles that don't look horrifically blocky. So after some research in Photoshop to get block-by-blow schemata for circles, I now have a handy guide to circle-carving.

This is what happened when I carved an experimental design;

I'm in love, guys. That's all there is to it.

I asked him to post it on the Wiki, because something like that should not be shown and not posted for everybody to use.

It is love. Although the characters are a bit small...

 WHO CARES! It's smooth walls!

Small characters are nothing a little bit of zoom can't fix.

And the tileset IS on the wiki, look for "list of user character sets". I've made some minor tweaks to the icons used for dwarves (his were skinny, and lacking), but beyond that it's great.

One final caveat; don't embark on areas with puddingstone.

I like it.  it'll probably look weird with the default graphics turned on, though.  All those do is make dwarves look funny and make all the tiles square instead of rectangular.  That's what I normally use.

You don't have to turn on the graphics; just get the image file, replace the "curses blah blah" default in the non-graphics entry, and BAM.

Can the angled wall effect eventually be applied to unsmoothed stone?

Can the angled wall effect eventually be applied to unsmoothed stone?

Ask Toady.

Right now, unsmoothed/not-constructed walls are rendered as bricks with letters on them.

What resolution did you use for the screenshots?

I tried this one, because it does look sweet, but I couldn't find a resolution that didn't make it look blurry and eye-splitting.

Here's mine; I love me some big screen. It fits perfectly.

Code: [Select]

[WINDOWEDY]
[FONT:720x225_SmoothWalls.bmp]

[BLACK_SPACE:NO]

[GRID:80:40]

I'm currently trying to adapt this to the mayday pack, it's turned out ok, though several of the tiles don't match up perfectly (They don't look smooth). This is a result of trying to upscale a 9x9 set to a 16x16 set :(

I could save what I currently have (still tweaking it to get stuff to 'sync' properly) as a PNG and post it if anyone wants.
Title: Re: I'm In Love With This Character Set
Post by: Duke 2.0 on December 20, 2008, 02:45:05 pm

Yes, my eyes would like a 16x16 set.

And I would like to see any obvious problems with it. As long as smooth walls are there, I'm fine.

Is what I have so far, there are a couple minor problems where, instead of
Code: [Select]
   X
  X
 X
You have this instead...
Code: [Select]
   X
   X
  X

I'm messing around with the layout trying to get rid of those, but since I can't directly copy the 9x9 to a 16x16 it's kind of frustrating.

The diagnols are off as well :( /me goes off to fix.

EDIT: Tweaked it a bunch, should be much smoother now. I can't spot any obvious problems, but let me know if you see any, and I will try and fix.

If anyone could help, by giving me step by step instructions on how to make this work, it would be greatly aprreciated.

(I have already got it in my art folder in BMP format, now what?)

Did it, but what grid size/resolution do I have to put it? Ive already scrwed around with it and I forgot what default was. currently, Im getting a messed up intro and nothing at all after that.

Edit: I tried the orginal one without the intergration of mayday and that worked fine ("Fine" meaning that the screen was horrendously small and the lines were horrendously blurry.

One that did not work (Intergrated one): http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/aStaleFart/DortenPlusMayday.png

One that DID work but was horrendously blurry and small. (Like, 100x100 small.)

If you have mayday: download my file, covert to a .bmp 24bit by opening it in photoshop (or paint) and saving it as a bmp file to your data/art directory.

Then you just change:
Code: [Select]
[GRAPHICS:YES]
[GRAPHICS_WINDOWEDX:1280]
[GRAPHICS_WINDOWEDY:800]
[GRAPHICS_FONT:WhatYouSavedThePngAs.bmp] CHANGE THIS LINE TO YOUR FILE NAME
[GRAPHICS_FULLSCREENX:1280]
[GRAPHICS_FULLSCREENY:1024]
[GRAPHICS_FULLFONT:WhatYouSavedThePngAs.bmp] CHANGE THIS LINE TO YOUR FILE NAME
[GRAPHICS_BLACK_SPACE:YES]

and voila.

Otherwise, if you DON'T have a graphics pack, and just a vanilla install of DF, you will need to do the same steps as above, with the file you get from the wiki (720x225_SmoothWalls.png) and convert it to a .bmp file and save it to the data/art directory.

Then you go into the init file and change...
Code: [Select]
[WINDOWEDX:1024]
[WINDOWEDY:800]
[FONT:720x225_SmoothWalls.bmp] OR WHATEVER YOUR FILENAME IS

Then you need to adjust the resolution. Just multiply the desired grid size by the size of corresponding tile. In this case, it's square, so multiply both by 9. If you want a grid of 80:50, you would need a resolution of (80 * 9):(50 * 9) or 720x450.

So I did, there is the partially tweaked version. I didn't change all of the tiles, since I haven't quite figured out where they all go yet, so I can't test them all ingame. I haven't had much time to go over the wiki in detail yet, but I plan on doing that tonight.

I've been making some heavy revisions to it, but I'll post the modified tileset later tonight.

One thing I've found is that replacing the division symbol (used for barrels) with a graphic that creates a realistic barrel messes with screw pumps, so I removed that. A shame, since it works so well.

Yeah not a bad char. set, but I don't like the floors to be honest.

You can change them? Just open it up in photoshop, find the floor tile (row 4 or 5, on the right edge) and paint your own. remember that the tile needs to be 16 pixels by 16 pixels (or whatever size you have) and use the pencil tool ('paints' one pixel at a time) and voila. Instant modification to any design you like. You can even find a tileset with the same dimension as yours and just copy/paste the tile over into your set. All it is is an image. Images are editable.

GFXiNXS delivers.

I personally detest the breakup that the bevel introduces between wall tiles, but have mimicked it for the sake of consistency.

I will also take this moment to shamelessly advertise a tileset of my own making featuring:
anti-aliasing
curved river icons (world map)
animated rivers/brooks for a rather nice effect (requires water level display be turned off)
the all new smooth walls with a minor touch of my own
various deviations from icon's natural ascii equivalents.

This might sound dastardly to all those ascii lovers (me being one), though due to the ambiguity of an 8x8 tile's representation, multi-faceted images can be created eg. dwarven civ icon also equating to a statue etc.
If anyone gains any enjoyment out of this set or has any critique etc, drop me a line at http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=25654.0 (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=25654.0)

/end of shameless advertisement.

tl;dr: Herrbdog with smooth walls. Grab it while it's hot.

The diagonals interlock a bit strangely but its either that or they interlock with straight ones strangely.

I don't have the default set, but I do have a variant of the original 9x9 that I edited to remove the bed/barrel tiles and bring them back to ASCII goodness. I'll post that later tonight when I have access to it. I'll also see about modifying the 8x12, but I suspect that diagonal walls work much, much better on square tilesets.

Since no one more experienced responded, I tried it myself.  The results so far look nice, but would result in a squiggly line if you made a diagonal line of walls.  So I consider it a failure and ask again if someone else could edit the 16x16 curses tile set to have smooth walls.
