1050. A group calling itself the Tundra Clan establish a Fortress in the cold North. Their tome is written by the leader, with a new one chosen each year, for the good of the clan in order to keep a single Dwarf from holding free reign over the people, be it Good and Kind, or Evil and Iron-Fisted.

Journal of Nil, Founder of the Tundra Clan: Year 1.

2nd Granite, 1051: We made it to the Holy grounds, the Young bloods are gettin' riled up and askin' to setup the base. I told them to carve the ramps away from our starting position, to make it more defensible against the Undead if the need comes.

5th Granite: The walls be lookin' smooth now, and I led Onul over to the spot where we are going to be carving our main hall from. I began digging and she followed suit. I plan for the entrance to look somethin' like this.

10th Granite: Erush Decided that Bones be not in enough quantity to be crafted, so she took up stonecrafting. Good idea, I say, because the Obsidian around here   is worth alot to the Humans and Tree Huggers.

14th Granite: The entrance is carved, so I decided we should be diggin' far down, deep into the earth. We can make a small access tunnel to the farmable soils once we setup a main hall and sleeping area.

17th Granite: Floorplan for our Mead hall and food production has been setup, now all that needs planning is our crafting, sleeping, and smithing areas.

18th granite: I just realized that we all be women here, except the Bowyer. Poor fellow, the ladies will be clamoring over 'im in no time.

15th Slate: By the Hammer! I damn near fell into the biggest sinkhole I'd ever seen in my entire life! The Mead hall can still be dug out, along with food storage, but now we need a new area to setup food processing. The ratmen are staring at me. The bowyer took it upon himself to start trainin' the dogs into war dogs. I told Erush to make him a sword from stone, using some precious wood. Doesnt matter, we need protection.

1st Hematite: The chasm is nearly cleared, thanks to Iton. There's just a few straggler Troglodytes that arent worth the trouble, since one managed to hurt him pretty badly anyway. I decided to kill the rest of them, since I had free time. Farming is setup, with the dinin' hall underway. Now we need to clear out the to-be food stockpiles of stone. Time to get that stonecrafter workin' somewhere else.

23rd Hematite: We're running low on booze and food. Traders should be here in a season er so. I hope.

14th Malachite: A woman arrived today. I assume she's insane, because she told me her profession is woodcutter, and that she was looking for work. I assigned her to refuse haulin'.

28th Malachite: Dumat tells me she is extremely strong. I asked her how, and she told me that all the conversin' between her and the other idlers made her strong. Im worried about her mental condition.

10th Galena: Erush made a masterpiece Idol. She's bragging about it, and Im tempted to chuck it into our chasm.

12th Galena: Plump Helmet seeds ran out. I decided to order the plantin' of Pig tails.

19th Galena: Iton is callin' himself an Animal caretaker now. Whatever he says, I guess. Me, Urush, and Litast are the only ones doing any work now. Guess I should tell Onul to search around for magma, or to make a crypt.

1st Limestone: Autumn has come. No word from Humans, elves, goblins, nor Kobolds. I fear we may be forgotten. No matter, the Clan will live on without any outside influence, then!

6th Limestone: I've decided to dig out a rendition of what our Fortress symbol will be. It will be filled in with the correct stones and walls, including gems, in time, but for now, It's perfect. (FYI, it's an Axe and a Pickaxe)

12th Limestone: Thank the Gods! A dwarven caravan has arrived! I have ordered everyone to haul all the crafts to the depot.

13th Limestone: My god! Wood, armor, meat! It's like they knew exactly what we needed!

21st Limestone: As if some omen, a huge pack of skeletal elk decided to come as soon as the traders entered the fort. 1 Caravan guard was injured, and luckily none of my Clan-Mates were in the fight. This time.

15th Sandstone: The traders packed up and left. A shame, I know I could've gotten alot more, but they were in a hurry, I guess. We gained alot of meat, some spiked balls (especially good for killing the undead, I cant wait to get them setup), and other assorted foodstuffs. All in all, Im looking forward to this winter.

24th Sandstone: I've begun designing an outside wall and trap system, where I will be able to let traders go safely by, and also funnel hostiles into a trapped pathway.

7th Timber: Skeletal Muskoxen.. They are eying my wall.. I fear that they will charge, but they stay at a.. disturbingly close distance from us..

11th Timber: Some migrant have arrived. But the Oxen's blockade on us is still. I hope they make is safely.

12th Timber: Hah! I never wouldve thought! The migrant were running from the Oxen herd, when with some sudden bravery, they all charged them, it was a short fight, but the Oxen were obliterated! Not even a single wound, either! I've made a few of the less useful immigrants into recruits, in commemoration of their battle prowess.

27th Timber: I've finished the outside wall, and the Insane Woodcutter is making mechanisms to hook up to the bridges.

18th Moonstone: I've decided the north of the chasm will be offices and Higher-Up's bedrooms. The east will be Tombs. The south is undetermined so far.

8th Opal: The Chasm's looking nice and square now. The Circle made me feel unsafe for some reason. The crypt is also coming along nicely, and my Burial place will be at the top. It looks more like a mausoleum, but either way.

10th Opal: The bridge connections are up and running now, if I pull a level, the merchant's path will be opened, and force hostiles through another way. Which is trapped.

1st Granite, 1052: My rule is over, as we all had agreed it would be. I am passing my book to another in line. I will continue to work and counsel for the next leader.

Uploading save right now.

Post by: Moocow on February 18, 2008, 10:06:00 pm
Alright. Done.

--------------Well, I arrived at the fortress. Stone is everywhere; messy place. I like the design, being centered around the

chasm, it isnt very healthy though, since the chasm acts like a miasma chimney. Half the fort is a tomb. The

layout is crazy, I'll be surprised if I get anything done.

2nd granite: Started digging out metalsmithing area. Thank god for legendary miners.

8th granite: Hey! Ive struck Microlone! Today is my lucky day!

15 granite: found some tetrehedtride in the magma pipe, mining in before it gets flooded. also elven caravanz

20 granite: uh oh, a party

7 slate: Phew, its over.

10 slate: Some migrants. Some peasants, a mechanic, a grower, an animal disector, a craftsdwarf (glass, stome,

leather) engraver, armorsmith, weaponsmith (just in time) seige operator. Pop is now 37, and FPS is 5 FPS lower.

22 slate: About to fill the magma tube. Almost lost Ol' in there. Idiot stood ontop of stairs as he channeled them

away.

6 felsite: and the first magma smelter is placed
(http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/5803/smithlv6.jpg)

16 Felsite: Mafol the woodcutter was hit by a fey mood. He takes a mechanic workshop. He takes a rock and some

precious logs and starts making something. You guessed it. Obsidian mechanisms. We could use a good mechanic.

24 Felsite: Magma is taking its sweat time through the pipe

Summer hits

13 hematite: We get ambushed by a single kobold, he dies in less than a second by a wrestler and some war dogs
z
17 hematite: Humans arrive, or at least their guild rep.

23 hematite: Magma still hasnt made it

28th Hematite: Finished a useless bridge across the chasm

4 malachite: THE MAGMA HAS MADE IT, PRAISE THE MINERS.

Stupid hunter is getting scared away by his prey

Bought a bunch of wood from the carvan, also but a lot of meat, some cages, and a bit of beer

Made the hunter stop hunting and turned him into a much needed carpenter.

24 malachite: Magma isnt deep enough to start smelting yet

Nothing happens. Its autumn now.

27 sandstone: Expanded the foor storage place to accomadate 2 stills

+++ Damn, lost a chunk from here somehow.

5th Limestone: smelters STILL arent ready.

Same day: I order a few bins made

11 limestone: siege operator withdrew from society, took a craftsdwarf workshop. Took a buncha shells and some

cloth and started making something

17 limestone: dwarf caravan arrived, but left because I accidentally trapped the human caravan in with a door.

18 limestone: seige op made a turtle shell right gauntles and became a bone carver.

Caravan got ambushed, 1 dwarf died, but the gobs were killed by a marksdwarve they had. Better them than us.

Hmm, caravan actually came, without the wagons ofcourse

25 lime: Finally smelters work

God damn skeletal elk are annoying me.

A peasant and an elite wrestler were lost to the elk

Some are hurt, but there is no water, so they will probably die. Unless he can heal a yellow upper leg in time.

16 sandstone: There is no more elk chaos. Phew.

Ah, migrants, lets see what we have
2 gem cutters, a bunch of peasants, an animal disecot, a pimp operator, a gem setter, and a seige engineer

20 timber: Mining a new meeting room, since meeting halls from the dining room only promote parties. Also making

some copper weapons and sheilds.

21 timber: Started some exploratory shafts to look for copper. My tombs at the bottom of the chasm is also

completed.

22 timber: Elite wrestler died of thirst because of the lack of water.

1 Moonstone: Its winter. Also struck some aluminun, oh, and copper too.

4 Moonstone: I swear I just saw a goat take a peice of copper and haul it away.

8 Moonstone: Our armorsmith made a masterpiece sheild. That will come in handy.

9 Moonstone: Made another squad and fitten them with armour and sheilds. Someday they will get a spear.

15 Moonstone: Added some coffins to the bottom level of Ol's ginormous tomb.

27 Moonstone: Started branching a few bedrooms out of the entranct to Ol's tomb.

7 Opal: I became a furnace operator... Yey?

14 Opal: Fishery Worker became possesed. Hopefuly he becomes an armoursmith or something. Nevermind. Too a

craftshop

15 Opal: Took 5 chunks of rock and some wax opals and started making something useless.

22 Opal: Worked and made an obisidion Idol.

24 Opal: A recruit gave birth to a girl.

I made myself the sherrif. Going to make me a semi-nice room near the center of the fortress. Please engrave this

area eventually.

12 Obisidian: I just realized that I am a she. Oh well.

And so I retire as leader. I didnt get too much done, but at least the soldiers will have some armour to die in.

The fortress layout really threw me off at first, but now that I am more used to it. Will be fun to see how this

fortress does.

1st Granite, 1053

Every year our clan chooses a new dwarf to lead them. It was decided even before the first strikes against the mountain. It is widely believed that this is so no one dwarf becomes to powerful in the decision-making for our new mountain home.

And thus, I, Gaul Freecraft, swordsdwarf, have been chosen now. May I be blessed by the gods above in my dealings with these rocky halls.

11th Granite

The Elves have arrived. I order that our rock crafts be brought to the depot. We'll see if they bring us anything useful. I have my doubts.

14th Granite
  (http://usera.imagecave.com/Gaulgath/tundra_clan_1.PNG)

An ambush! A squad of goblin macemen stand at our gates!

Me and Kadol, an elite wrestler, decide to go out and be the first to meet the cowards! They will not stand a chance!

Dumat Morulfoker, Hamlet Manager

23rd Granite

Gaul lies dead, as well as several other dwarves. I take it upon myself to rule the fort until the beginning of next year. I have decided to arm our entire military with short swords, lest the green bastards strike again!

15th Slate

Migrants arrive to help us out. They will probably end up being more of burden. The sheriff has now named himself captain of guard and has formed the fortress guard. And Ol' Mirropicks is now mayor and now desires a bed room, office, a dining room. I'll have to get right on that.

In other news, all those who died have been buried in the fortress symbol. Gaul lies in a copper sarcophagus in the tip of the axe, as I am sure he would have wanted.

27th Felsite

Today the last stone was placed in what I shall christen The Gaul Memorial Bridge, which spans the chasm in the middle of our fortress. It looks positively marvelous, in my opinion.

11th Hematite, Early Summer

Today, two skeletal elk charged into the fortress, and two of our sword-armed soldiers charged into the entry halls, destroying both easily. Yet it still worries me that they could make such an attack. Next time they may come in larger numbers, and we may not fare as well.

14th Hematite

A human merchant baroness arrived with the usual trade caravan. Ol' Mirrorpicks will meet with her shortly. I have told her some things that our fortress needs after overlooking the stocks. I'm not sure she was exactly paying attention, but hopefully she won't request anything positively useless.

17th Hematite

Today we held the election. I do not quite understand why, but today I was elected mayor over Ol' Mirrorpicks!

Even more good news: the humans brought over a dozen of precious logs. They are extremely cheap, considering our situation. They also brought exotic meats, cheeses and drinks which I will have to enjoy later.

All this for our obsidian crafts. I am most pleased with the trading.

20th Hematite

Another ambush! Once again, it is a squad of macegoblins. They seem to be led by an axegoblin too. I do not wish to risk more of our warriors in a foolish and pointless engagement.

21st Hematite

They charged down our halls before the bridge could be raised to block them. The human mercenary guards killed them swiftly, but not before they could take the life of Ast Alathkesh, an animal trainer.

26th Hematite

The greenskins ambush us again! This time they bring bows, deadly to even the most skilled of our soldiers. I order the drawbridge closed, not wanting to risk any close encounters.

...It seems a single one of their bow-goblins has made it safely past our drawbridge. He chased a craftsdwarf down the halls, but missed every shot. He now lingers just outside the main entrance.

6th Malachite

I conducted the meeting with the merchant baroness today. I requested some drinks, wood, and iron bars.

16th Malachite

The humans left today. They slaughtered the goblins with only one wound to a mace man. I am most grateful.

9th Galena

I ordered our military to attack some skeletal elk that had wondered near our fort. One of our soldiers foolishly charged ahead of the rest of the group and was trampled to death. Still, I can not help but feel guilty.

20th Limestone, Early Autumn

The Dwarven caravan arrived in our depot toady. We traded our crafts for much of their items.

7th Timber

Imush Tulonavuz, pump operator, has begun acting peculiarly secretive recently.  We will be keeping an eye on her.

...Well, she took two lumps of obsidian and began working on something in a craftsdwarf workshop. Curious.

11th Timber

Imush finished what she was working on. It's an obsisdian bracelet. An expensive trinket, I suppose, but of little use to us. Regardless, she seems to be a rather excellent stone carver now. One might even say... legendary.

15th Moonstone, Early Winter

Today, the last non-military dwarf received a bed. Fortress guards also get beds to avoid cluttering up the barracks.

22nd Moonstone

We lost many good dwarves this day. We were faced with a goblin ambush right in our halls. First it was a squad of spears, who were discovered by a mechanic just in front of the depot. Our military responded quickly, and a marksdwarf shot down many of them as they charged down the halls and attacked our swordsdwarves.

Then that same marksdwarf was ambushed by a squad of axegoblins in the entry halls. He perished quickly. They killed three more dwarves. Two recruits and a miner who was drafted to help fight back the enemy.

Our swordsdwarves ended up routing the enemy, yet I wish they could have done it sooner.

23rd Moonstone

Another goblin ambush! Is their no end to my misery? It is outside this time, but with bowgoblins. I must order the drawbridge to close.
////////////

I have to go. Will finish later tonight.

27th Moonstone

We lost more good dwarves this day. Ingish, our best soldier, bravely charged against the bowgoblins. Even as the arrows found their marks in his flesh he did not relent, and killed one of the bastards before he fell to the ground. The others were either blocked by the drawbridge and retreated or fell to a step into our weapon traps. Yet still, our once proud military has dwindled to two swordsdwarves and the fortress guards.

Mark my words, their deaths shall be avenged.

23rd Opal, Midwinter

I have ordered my office engraved. It was simply not good enough for a mayor of any kind. Nish, our legendary engraver, created some magnificent pieces there. I am most impressed.

25th Obsidian

A gem cutter seems to have withdrawn from society. I think I know what's wrong with him...

He's claimed a jewelers workshop, just as I suspected he would.

27th Obsidian

He's working with some rough wax opals we had lying around in a bin. I wished him luck, but got no reply. Honestly, he rather frightened me.

1st Granite, Early Spring

My job as fortress Overseer is now over. I wish my successor the best of luck.

And keep an eye on that Logem fellow.

Hm, so I'm next then? I'll get on it.

Edit: I'm taking a random dwarf and nobody can stop me.

Here's a journal for some of spring:

1st of Granite, 1054:
I was voted into power, a simple metalsmith. I've taken a look at things and it seems to me that this fortress has been kept awfully.

There are stone blocks in the metal bar stockpile, there are huge human-sized weapons and wimpy daggers in the weapons stockpile, and no dwarf has a door despite the apparent excess of stone, and other things. It will be fixed, believe me. It will all be fixed.

I've begun by ordering that only metal bars be in the stockpile, orderded the construction of ten stone doors (not enough, but enough for now) and have decided to have one of the smelters removed. This is because we will be melting weapons and other useless stuff, and the smelters cannot share their partial bars of metal.

Also, I've ordered a few bins and barrels made, because the previous rulers of this fortress must have decided that the wood was to valuable to use. Why have wood if you aren't going to use it?

There's also an insane dwarf in a craftsdwarf's workshop.

3rd of Granite, 1054:
This fort is huge, sprawling, and particularly annoying. Everything takes forever to happen. I do like the bridge over the chasm; at least I will like it until a giant cave spider jumps out and eats us all.

8th of Granite, 1054:
I've given myself the title of "Comrade" to show the other dwarves that I'm their friend. I've also demoted Moocow, the former leader, to the title "Former Leader".

There are several doors up, and there's now a quicker way to get between the weapon stockpile and the smelter.

Also, that insane dwarf has created a wax opal cabinet, encrusted in more wax opal, worth 24000 monies, and named it Divinehelp. I hope it lives up to its name.

21st of Granite, 1054:
The elves came to trade, and we were doing well (got a whole lot of wood) but then we accidentally offered them something with a bit of leather on it. We had to seize the rest of what we wanted.

I was disappointed, because them leaving mainly meant that we had to keep most of the goblins' junk.

Melting is coming along well; we have some more iron bars. I've noticed the military is almost nonexistent. Something needs to be done about that.

There's also a serious dog problem, shown by what happens when the animal trainer takes one:

They're like a swarm of flies; When you're coming down the hall and you see a dog, you know to get out of the way of the huge wave of puppies that comes behind it.

26th of Granite, 1054:
I've noticed that there's two carpenter's workshops: one close to the wood stockpile and one very far away. I've ordered the distant one to be demolished. I've also ordered 20 more doors made.

And the dogs keep having puppies. They're everywhere. I'm scared.

10th of Slate, 1054:
One of our recruits has become a speardwarf. I've made some greaves because these four dwarves are all we have for defense, and they need stronger armor. Melting the goblins' and humans' armor has given us some more iron.

The dogs continue to pump out puppies, but we already have far too much refuse and do not need any more.

12th of Slate, 1054:
I told the dwarves to dump those blocks somewhere, but it seems that they've been ordered to dump everything into the chasm. Not that that's bad, it was just unexpected.

17th of Slate, 1054:
There... there was a skeletal muskox that got into the fortress. It took out two dwarves and badly injured another. I was injured a bit, but I'll be back up in a little. Unless I dehydrate, because there aren't any buckets for carrying water. I've ordered two made.

19th of Slate, 1054:
I was just informed that there is no water in the fortress. If I don't get better soon, I will die. Dwarven ale is strong and is not suited for the injured, for it increases blood flow or something and causes you to bleed more.

I don't know what's going to happen to me. I've ordered the construction of coffins. I'm praying to Datan Shinrisen Lolok that I survive.

[OOC: Torak, am I allowed to make a successor? Or is this one of those succession games where if your dwarf dies then it gets immediately passed on to the next person?]

Well my dwarf died and I just started writing everything from the manager's point of view.

You can save your dwarf though. Just make a booze stockpile next to his bed and demolish said bed when he gets thirsty. Lock the door to his room so he can't get out too. Then he'll have nothing to do but drink. Then you simply reconstruct the bed and repeat ad nauseum.

Another can take the place, it's not a hardcore succession.

5th of Felsite, 1054:
I can feel my death drawing nearer. Slowly. I have an excellent tomb, though, engraved by our amazing engraver. Whatever his name is.

We haven't made any green glass with our lack of sand, so that crackpot mayor of ours ordered a dwarf to be beaten. A random dwarf. He healed quickly, though.

Much of the fortress stone is being smoothed now; for some reason nobody ordered the dwarves to do so before now.

13th of Felsite, 1054:
We got many immigrants, bringing our population up to 66.

One was a Dungeon Master, who I saw wasn't wearing any pants. I decided not to ask.

We'll need to mine out some rooms, anyway.

I'm also thinking about who to be my successor.

3rd of Hematite, 1054:
Comrade Penguino died of thirst. Somehow he crawled out of his bed and almost made it to the food stockpile. Pitiful. I am his replacement, Comrade Tocino the Fish Cleaner. I shall rule forever. None can stop me.

I shall order the construction of a beautiful tomb, a tomb more beautiful than Penguino's by far.

Actually, I could just dump his coffin into the chasm and take his tomb. I'm sure he won't miss it.

4th of Hematite, 1054:
How many dogs are there in this fortress? Almost fifty, thirty or so of which are puppies. I shall order them all slaughtered and their flesh baked into beautiful roasts as a celebration of my rise to power.

Watch where you're dumping that coffin; might hit mine.

19th of Hematite, 1054:
I've been informed that the human caravan came today. They were slowed in their progress by the wave of puppies. The mayor is getting a drink.

An insane peasant became peculiarly secretive and took over a craftsdwarf's workshop. I've ordered him to be killed for insolence, but the other dwarves say that they know what he's doing. He took some of our precious logs, so it better be good.

I've ordered two beautiful brass bins to be made. They aren't wood and that's what matters.

20th of Hematite, 1054:
The craftsdwarf that was injured in the same incident as Penguino died today.

I hear that the dungeon master is getting a tomb before me. This will not go unpunished.

21st of Hematite, 1054:
We traded with the humans today. We asked for large amounts of their goods, and they looked at us as if we couldn't buy that much. We then showed them one of our giant cave spider silk socks. They practically fainted, because it seems that's exactly what they asked from us last year.

This happened about four times. We're swimming in wood, food, weapons, and booze. I've ordered the construction of two wooden barrels as a celebration.

28th of Hematite, 1054:
That peasant has been grabbing everything he can! He's taken gems, leather, wood, and stone. I cannot stand this. I shall have him killed.

1st of Malachite, 1054:
The peasant is working in the workshop. I'm not going to have him killed because some of the other dwarves said that it would bring a lot of fame and wealth to this fortress.

The humans are still sitting there in the trade depot, counting their socks as our dwarves take everything the humans used to own to our stockpiles.

6th of Malachite:
I've been informed that the peasant created a maple earring called "The Roots of Drowning," encrusted with obsidian, decorated with willow, encircled with bands of dog leather and wax opal, has spikes of dog leather, an image of a coin in tower-cap, an image of circles in dog leather, and an image of traveling dwarves in wax opal. It's worth 34800 monies and the peasant says he knows how to craft wood now. Which we don't need at all. He's going back into the military.

15th of Malachite:
The humans are leaving. I swear I saw one of them rubbing his face against one of those horrendously overpriced socks.

We're almost done with the dungeon master's quarters. He's demanding an armor stand and a weapon rack, both of which are useless. Just because that demand is silly, we're giving him an armor stand that can't hold armor and a weapon rack that can't hold weapons. It's a very clever plan.

17th of Malachite:
The human merchant person came to the mayor today, and he ordered exactly what I told him to order: more wood, some iron, and some gold.

3rd of Galena:
I have ordered the dwarves to dump the bones of a dwarf down the chasm to test their loyalty and see if they could possibly do the same for old Penguino. The test is successful; they dumped the bones without question. I am ordering more puppies to be slaughtered in celebration.

It seems that a dog has been bitten by a cave spider. I shall examine it for symptoms.

13th of Limestone:
The dwarven caravan came today. We're hauling some magical giant cave spider silk socks up to them, but I suspect that the mayor will want to take a nap once the caravan is ready to trade.

Much of the fort is smoothed now, and some of it is engraved. The food stockpiles are overflowing with dog meat and tallow, so I've ordered a new one placed above the dining room.

Our three new military squads are getting more powerful. They should be ready to start training with weapons by the end of the year. I'll be happy watching them rise to become champions, knowing that I was the one who allowed them to gain their power.

Only one thing stands in my way: some stupid rule that says that we have to get a new leader at the beginning of each year.

14th of Limestone:
Damn, the human merchant baroness seems to have succeeded in her plight to walk over every nook and cranny of our fortress, including the traps. I didn't notice that she didn't make it out alive. Oops. I hope the humans don't get angry.

Actually, I hope they do. Next year, it won't be my problem. That rule is useful after all.

15th of Limestone:
We made a killing with the dwarven caravan! They gave us some leather, some cloth and thread, several miscellaneous pieces of steel armor, booze, wood, metal, gems, and dye in exchange for our socks.

The only problem is that we are running low on narrow giant cave spider silk socks. That's bad.

I also bought many metal cages from the dwarves, because they can be melted down into a bar of metal each, if my calculations are correct. Their tin and zinc cages are a marvelous source of... tin and zinc.

We must prepare for winter and the small decrease in the normal freezing temperature it brings. The new food stockpile will be put to use as soon as Ol' Mirrorpicks stops drinking. I swear, he's been at it for a while. He needs to get working soon, though.

[OOC: do dwarves use mugs now? I've been seeing the occasional obsidian mug in the dining room.]

24th of Limestone:
I've noticed we have a lot of metal bars. Not sure what to do about it but order a bunch of iron high boots and gauntlets made. Our dwarves need them anyways.

1st of Sandstone:
A carpenter appears as if he's possessed and he's running towards the carpenter's workshop. Something tells me this won't be as profitable as the last guy who did something like this, and he became a wood crafter which really isn't too profitable anyways.

Also, the wood stockpile has been smoothed and the leather stockpile is in the process of being smoothed. I can't believe nobody else actually used our "legendary" engraver to his full ability. There are two not-so-expert engravers helping him out.

4th of Sandstone:
The carpenter took the workshop and grabbed a precious tower-cap log, some dog leather, a pyrolusite block, some superior quality cave spider cloth, an obsidian stone, and some topazes. Good thing I've been dumping all the bad-quality cloth into the chasm, or he might have taken some of that. He certainly didn't look like he was paying much attention to what he was grabbing, anyways.

I've decided to train everyone in one of the new squads in war hammers just for the fun of it. I guess if anyone wants to train them in crossbows later, they can, but I prefer war hammers.

Almost all of the puppies have been slaughtered now. That's one more good thing I've done with my rule.

8th of Sandstone:
The carpenter finished what he was working on. It's a tower cap armor stand worth 34800 monies. It's decorated with cave spider silk, bands of obsidian and tower cap, and spikes of dog leather, topaz, and pyrolusite.

More puppies were born, and I had them marked for slaughter. There will be no useless puppies in my fortress.

Our soldiers seem intent on bringing the barrels of booze all the way to the barracks before drinking them, which would be fine if the civilians didn't immediately bring them back to the food stockpiles.

I noticed we still have a lack of doors in this fortress and have ordered ten more made.

Title: Re: The Tundra Clan: Succession (New rulers in need!)
Post by: penguinofhonor on February 23, 2008, 06:30:00 pm
11th of Sandstone:
A dwarf got bitten by a cave spider today. A fortress guard, so he's not really anything important.

18th of Sandstone:
I've figured out an idea to make the workshops so that they aren't all the way across the fortress from the stockpiles: we'll build them directly below the stockpiles! I wonder why nobody has thought of this yet... I am truly the greatest ruler yet and the dwarves will surely not care if I take another year or three of my rule.

We found two dead dwarves on the traps, the dwarven liason and his guard. They seem to have decided to leave via the trap channel instead of the open regular channel.

There are immigrants. Again. I've decided to make them enter through the trap channel to see what happens. I've also ordered more coffins to be made.

20th of Sandstone:
Nothing happened. Drats. The orders for coffins have been cancelled.

There weren't many anyways, only seven. With them, the fortress population is now 73. There is also a new military squad.

1st of Timber:
I've ordered another of the military squads to become macedwarves. I like maces even more than I like war hammers. The next squad, the largest one, are speardwarves.

6th of Timber:
There was a huge cloud of miasma from the butcher's workshop. I'll need to watch that and order all junk in there dumped into the chasm.

What's at the bottom of that chasm, anyway? I don't like it just being there, in the middle of everything. It's strange. Dangerous. Someone could fall in, and that would be horrible... unless I wanted them to fall in. Bwa ha ha!

15th of Timber:
I've ordered that the entire stockpile area be smoothed and a small platform built extending off of one side of the chasm part of the way down to test my "falling" idea.

Title: Re: The Tundra Clan: Succession (New rulers in need!)
Post by: penguinofhonor on February 23, 2008, 08:38:00 pm
1st of Moonstone:
The bridge on the "falling" trap works. Now to test it on someone. Someone unimportant...

5th of Moonstone:
Bwahahahahahahahaha! It worked! IT WORKED! That silly fishery worker has fallen down the chasm. He threatened my authority. I'm the only fishery worker allowed here.

Anyone who says differently can face the full wrath of whatever's on the bottom of the chasm. And it'll be angry, considering we've been dumping junk on it for a while.

Instructions to my successor:

[OOC: don't do this to important dwarves (old leaders and the like) because it's definitely a boring and lame way to die]

8th of Moonstone:
I've ordered the construction of a trifle pewter bin in celebration of my immense success.

14th of Moonstone:
The legendary bone carver gave birth to a boy today.

The movement of the craftsdwarves' workshops down below the finished goods pile is going well. Due to their structure, I was forced to make them on three separate levels.

16th of Moonstone:
This must be a hasty entry: a goblin master thief was sighted. He's one of their leaders. He met a macedwarf. I'm going to watch.

22nd of Moonstone:
There was an ambush. Comrade Tocino was killed. I, Comrade Sir Paul McCartney, a soaper, will take his place as leader for the remaining three fourths of the winter.

[OOC: man, I can't stop losing leaders!]

We are currently producing some more coffins and hauling in dead bodies and loot. The melting operation is still going strong, of course.

The legendary woodcrafter was injured so badly that he dropped his treasured maple earring. Now he's resting and I fear he will die the same way that Comrade Penguino did.

Ugh, this leader business is not easy. I will not regret leaving it come spring.

1st of Opal:
The winter is one third over. I'm almost out of here.

I've ordered the construction of two more forges with some anvils we had laying around.

2nd of Opal:
I've found the cause of the dog problem. They all follow Kivish Helmedhandle, the animal trainer. All 30 of them. He is the cause of the perpetual traveling wave of dogs. I don't know what to do with him.

5th of Opal:
I've ordered the entire eastern hallway, that leads to the bedrooms and barracks, smoothed. It won't be done by the end of my rule, sadly. I'll still be around to see it, I guess.

17th of Opal:
It seems I underestimated the speed of our full engraving force. The eastern hallway is fully smoothed and I'm now ordering part of the entrance hallway to be smoothed.

23rd of Opal:
Almost all of the mace and spear squads are skilled in their weapon.

I just noticed the design of the dining room and that it wasn't completed yet. I've ordered six tables and five chairs made to complete the design.

27th of Opal:
A leatherworker has become peculiarly secretive. As expected, he's running for the leather workshop. We've all been through this drill multiple times. He'll be able to quickly gather what he wants due to the new workshop placement.

3rd of Obsidian:
The leatherworker grabbed a lot of stuff: some dog leather, two rough yellow spessartines, a cinnabar block, and a cut crystal opal.

[OOC: I hope it's a sword]

The year is almost over.

7th of Obsidian:
The leatherworker ran up to me today. I said, "What are ye doin' up here? I thought ye were workin' on some kind o' project."

"Ter usher in th' new year, I thought I'd donate it to th' fortress."

"That was mighty nice of ye. What is it, anyways?"

"A dog leather thong."

I was shocked. Of all the things he could have made... a thong?

He spoke again: "It's not just any dog leather thong, sur."

"What kind o' dog leather thong is it?"

"I called it Paintedgleeful the Smooth Clash-Spine. I covered all over with yello' spessartine an' cinnabar, made it all spiky with some dog leather an' crystal opal, sewed an image of a dimple cup in pig tail, an' made a picture of a dwarf in yello' spessartine."

"Sounds comfortable."

Now we have a spiky dog leather thong sitting around. It scares me.

16th of Obsidian:
The legendary wood crafter turned wrestler is almost dead. Pity.

17th of Obsidian:
I was right. He's dead.

22nd of Obsidian:
A macedwarf gave birth to a girl today. On the chasm bridge. Which is bad, considering dwarven mothers have been known to launch their babies several feet. She was lucky and nothing happened.

25th of Obsidian:
I commissioned some engravings today. Two of them were of a dog leather thong. That thing is on the minds of too many of our dwarves to be healthy.

1st of Granite:
I'm done. Leaving forever. None of this silly leader buisness anymore... I hope.

Here's the save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=31

Someone else will have to get the map, because the map compressor doesn't seem to want to work for me. Darn.

Important:
We have some shells, but don't put anyone on crafting them like the person before me did. We need them for moods.

1st Granite, 1055
I am Durien, latest in the line of leaders of the fortress.  I am an animal trainer by trade, and am uncertain why my fellow dwarves have chosen me for this honor.  However, I will discharge my new responsibilities to the best of my ability.

2nd Granite, 1055
I have noticed a distinct lack of tables and chairs.  Granted, there are thirty of each in the main dining room, but there are nearly 70 dwarves!  This will not do and I have commanded that the masons make up at least thirty more of each.

3rd Granite, 1055
It has been brought to my attention that the trade depot is far away from all of the craftsworkshops and there is no stockpile nearby to hold the trade goods.  I have ordered one dug out and smoothed beneath the depot.  It ought to speed things up considerably when the traders are around.

7th Granite, 1055
I have taken up the pick, in the hopes of speeding up the necessary digging.  Two strokes into it, I have struck alunite.  Bah!  Another worthless white stone.

11th Granite, 1055
I have ordered an emplacement dug out for a ballista to cover the front entranceway.  Even though there are a lot of traps, one can never have too many defenses.

16th Granite, 1055
An elven caravan has arrived, and I was relieved to find that my fellow dwarves did not expect me to meet with them.  Instead, the task falls to the mayor, who has shouldered this burden for each of the past three years.

17th Granite, 1055
A goblin thief has been spotted.  No sooner was he dealt with than a group of hammergoblins ambushed the elven caravan.  Since they are elves, I have decided to let them fend for themselves.  We'll see if their "kindness" is reciprocal.

18th Granite, 1055
The hauling dwarves would insist on gathering the supplies the elves have...donated.  I have sent the military out to protect those dwarves, and to give them practice.

21st Granite, 1055
Well, that could have gone better.  Two soldiers and three civilians died at the hands of goblins.  Clearly, the military needs to be beefed up.  None of the elves survived, but that's unimportant.  Need I say, free stuff?

5th Slate, 1055
Construction has begun on the siege workshop, and the dogs are giving birth to puppies left, right and center.

9th Slate, 1055
Another goblin snatcher.  It was dealt with the same way as the last one.

14th Slate, 1055
Sibrek has become a Swordmaster.

16th Slate, 1055
I have decided that I don't like my current quarters and have started mining out quarters better suited to my status as leader.

20th Slate, 1055
Some migrants have arrived.  It appears that they have heard of our innovative leadership and wish to take part.  Many will be drafted, for our military needs bulking up.

22nd Slate, 1055
I have commanded the formation of a squad of marksdwarves, since there a couple of immigrants who are familiar with the use of a crossbow.

8th Felsite, 1055
Mafol Eralast, Weaver has been taken by a fey mood and claimed the clothier's shop he was working in.

9th Felsite, 1055
Mafol has begun work on his inspiration using some of the spider silk cloth, the ever-present obsidian and milk quartzes.

13th Felsite, 1055
The weaver has completed his artifact, a silk toga.  Although it  looks quite fine, I would never wish to wear it.  The thing has spikes all over it!

21st Felsite, 1055
The first ballista has been built.  Goblins beware!

22nd Felsite, 1055
Of course, ballistas are useless without any ammo, so I have ordered several ballista arrows to be forged out of iron.

2nd Hematite, 1055
The undead demons have returned.  If they venture too near the fort, they shall face the wrath of our siege engine!

5th Hematite, 1055
The swordsdwarves have made quick work of the skeletal menace.

8th Hematite, 1055
The mayor has commanded the construction of green glass items.  No matter that there is no sand.  I have likewise commanded that her command be ignored.

10th Hematite, 1055
The humans have arrived and I have ordered all trade goods moved to the depot.

16th Hematite, 1055
The mayor has negotiated a fine deal with the human traders, gaining more logs and drink, and some metal that we have not yet found here.

22nd Hematite, 1055
Another goblin ambush.

23rd Hematite, 1055
Durien has died fighting goblins.  It has been agreed that I, the engraver Dulcet, will carry out his term.

27th Hematite, 1055
As there are large stretches of our home that are still rough-hewn, I have decreed that they all be smoothed, incidentally giving myself more work to do.

4th Malachite, 1055
More migrants have arrived.

9th Malachite, 1055
I have ordered the bedroom area expanded, as there are far too few beds for the current number of dwarves.

14th Malachite, 1055
The human traders have departed for their next stop.

16th Malachite, 1055
Another goblin snatcher.

19th Malachite, 1055
And another two snatchers.

28th Malachite, 1055
It has been brought to my attention that there is no water to give to the recuperating dwarves.  I supposed there is nothing left to do but pray to the gods for their swift recovery.

13th Galena, 1055
One of the injured peasants has succumbed to thirst and died.

14th Galena, 1055
i threw a party for my fellow dwarves today, to celebrate my achievement of legendary status.  I am now Dulcet, Legendary Engraver!

21st Galena, 1055
The craftsdwarf Kadol has gone fey and claimed a Clothier's shop.

22nd Galena, 1055
After claiming only some rope reed cloth and some red zircons, Kadol has begun his work.

27th Galena, 1055
Kadol has created a short skirt made out of rope reed.  I think it's very pretty and asked him to give it to me, which he did since he claims to have no use for it.

2nd Limestone, 1055
I have ordered the construction of some more weapon traps at the entrance, just in case.

4th Limestone, 1055
I have decided that I need a tomb worthy of being a leader of the Tundra Clan.  I have chosen, as my site, the empty space in the bottom of our clan's sign.

[Note to my successor: when Dulcet dies and is buried in her tomb, wall up the entrance with obsidian blocks.]

5th Limestone, 1055
One of the resting recruits has died of thirst.  Apparently because the fool dwarf was too lazy to get up and walk the few feet to the alcohol stockpile (his arm was injured, not his legs) and there was no water source available.

13th Limestone, 1055
I have begun engraving my future tomb.  Although not the most elaborate of constructions, it will be very nice indeed.

15th Limestone, 1055
The dwarven traders have returned, and so I have commanded all the goods to the depot and requested that the mayor go to greet them.

16th Limestone, 1055
It has just been brought to my attention that we are almost out of drinks.  I have immediately ordered more brewing, at max priority and have prohibited the brewers from all hauling tasks.

20th Limestone, 1055
The trading is complete.  Mayor Dumat has succeeded in buying all of the wood available, as well as more alcohol.  In addition, she has acquired several more weapons useful in traps, so that we may extend our defenses.

3rd Sandstone, 1055
A dragon has arrived!  I am told her name is Dolil Glimmeredfrost.  I only hope that our defenses will hold against such a fearsome beast.

5th Sandstone, 1055
Those of the military who were itching for a fight were fated to be disappointed.  Dolil managed to go through three rows of traps but was killed in the fourth.  The civilians, including myself, were relieved, however.  Dragons were dangerous beasts and no one wanted to meet one face to snout.

12th Sandstone, 1055
The swordsmaster Sibrek has become the fort's first champion!  We all stopped work and celebrated the entire day.  The humans, however, were unimpressed and left while we were drunker than usual.

23rd Sandstone, 1055
The wrestler Kivish, has died of thirst.  Why they demand water when any self-respecting dwarf would only drink alcohol is beyond my comprehension.

4th Timber, 1055
The bone carver Sarvesh has given birth to a girl.  She and her husband are, rightly, quite proud.

14th Timber, 1055
One of the guards, Likot, has become the first wrestling champion, to the joy of her fellow guards.

16th Timber, 1055
The second swordmaster, Asen, has joined the champion ranks.  I must say I feel much safer now, with several champions to defend the fort against all comers.

20th Timber, 1055
The Macedwarf Edem has given birth to a second girl.

25th Timber, 1055
Dumat has demanded gold items this time.  Gold!  When we have not a single nugget of the stuff!  She is clearly crazy.  In good news today, Zuntir has finally come of age and is ready to work in the fort.  In fact, I have told her to enter the military and take up the hammer in defense of her home.

26th Timber, 1055
The spearmaster Asob has become the first spear champion.

27th Timber, 1055
Another of the fortress guards, Sodel, has joined the ranks of champions.  At this rate it seems like half the military will be champions before the end of winter.

[Note: I'll try to finish my turn tonight, tomorrow at the latest.]

1st Moonstone, 1055
Winter has begun, the final season of my tenure as leader.

14th Moonstone, 1055
Work has finally finished on the milling area near the farms, and the windmill is providing less power than I had hoped.  I will have to order another one built to take up the slack.

15th Moonstone, 1055
Several goblin macemen and a guard have appeared at the entrance of our fort.  Fortunately a puppy was near and spotted them before they could enter.  A siege operator stationed at the ballista fired the first shot, taking out all but two of the goblins, a puppy and a couple of wardogs,  The last two goblins fled in horror.

17th Moonstone, 1055
Another ambush, this time a group of goblin axemen and a second group made up of crossbowmen.   They were soon joined by two goblin thieves and yet another squad of goblin macemen.

20th Moonstone, 1055
The resulting battle was swift and deadly.  The siege operator fled from his station at the sight of so many goblins, and the two recruits died along with a couple of civilian dwarves before the experienced military arrived.  However, the champions and mace lords took care of the goblins swiftly and in deadly purpose, coming out with not a scratch.

28th Moonstone, 1055
More goblin snatchers.  I would have thought that considering none of them ever leave, they would stop coming.  I suppose their stupidity is unmatched.

19th Opal, 1055
The report reached me from several other dwarves, and no doubt the entire fort will know before long.  It seems the clothier Kivish has gone fey and has claimed a clothier's shop.

24th Opal, 1055
With the second windmill up and running, the millstones are fully powered and can now be used to add a bit more variety to our diets.  Plump helmets only go so far.

26th Opal, 1055
It took Kivish a week to gather all of his materials, but he seems to have found everything he needs and has set to work.

2nd Obsidian, 1055
Kivish has completed his artifact, a pig tail chausse.  It is very nice, and very expensive since he decided to use aluminum in the decorations, but not entirely my style.  It is now lying in the workshop, and I suppose some dwarf with more dubious taste will claim it eventually.

6th Obsidian, 1055
I have begun setting things in order for my successor.  I will be a bit sorry to hand over leadership of this fortress to another, but it is the agreement that all who come here have made.

13th Obsidian, 1055
Today the guard Libash has joined the ranks of the champions.

16th Obsidian, 1055
The spearmaster Kivish has also become a champion.  With seven champions total, our fort is now well defended against most threats, I think.

25th Obsidian, 1055
Nish has grown to become a child today.  Although she can not do any work yet, I am sure she will help in the fields as the other children do.

And here's the save

---Log of Cog 'Kolsvartur' Dustrazors
--1st Granite, 1056
-I, a humble dyer, have been entrusted with securing the wellbeing of the fortress this year. I've been looking over it from a different viewpoint now, and I find it highly satisfactory. The presence of two levers in the dining room has always mystified me tough. Oh well, they can't be that important if they're where anybody could pull them!

--2nd Granite, 1056
-This leader business isn't so bad! I figure I'll have a nice little room dug out for me as compensation, of course, not too big. And maybe I'll have an iron mace made, too, because I like maces. And of course, we really need to make this place look better. I like the idea of those bronze statues. And perhaps I'll have a small plot for the dimple cups made, too... Oh! And a wall...

OOC: that's all I can squeeze in today, I'll be back home much sooner tomorrow. And do tell me anything you might think useful or important.

Alright, I'm back. Quick update, then I have to do some stuff, then I'll have all evening to play the fortress.

--5th Granite, 1056
-It seems some people simply cannot handle the sun, no matter how tough they are!

--8th Granite, 1056
-It seems the other leaders have done quite well in making tombs for themselves. I shall be no exception! I've got an idea that will beat any of theirs! Hah!

--11th Granite, 1056
-Domas Dangermachines has become the champion of the fortress guard. How nice.

--13th Granite, 1056
-The elves have arrived. Like clockwork, they arrive every spring. Without fail. It's like clockwork. The sort of clockwork that is constantly ticking with an annoying tick-tock-tick-tock that drives you absolutely crazy! And you can't rip out and smash the damn thing because then it's friends get angry and shoot you with their annoying big bows! Those annoying bows that will shoot straight through your head and kill you instantly! AND THEY DEMAND WE LIMIT OUR TREECUTTING WHEN THERE'S NOT A TREE IN SIGHT! THEY'RE CRAZY BUGGERS AND I HATE THEM I HATE THEM I HATE THEM!!!! RAAAGGGHH!

Well, anyway, it won't be me going to trade. Maybe we'll get something good from them. Like booze. Or some precious wood, some precious hypocritical wood. Pah. Oh well, not my problem!

OOC: I'll get back to the fortress in, what, an hour and a half max, probably.

EDIT: I'm back and made the post a little more dwarfy. A weapon they're too small to wield shouldn't be called little.

I've only managed to get through spring. Oh well. Dinnertime!

--16th Granite, 1056
-The elves are at our trade depot. Well, it's not me who'll have to deal with them!

And in better news, I found a vein of Galena while going over our maps! Joy!

--19th Granite, 1056
-Dumat has finished trading. He got a whole load of useful wood products such as barrels, as well as booze. He also bought all their dye at my behest.

I'm starting to enjoy this somewhat. It's too bad that I shall have to stop eventually, but such are the rules. Never let it be said I am not a fair ruler!

--25th Granite, 1056
-Bwee! Idea!

--6th Slate, 1056
-Why is Old Mirrorpicks called Mirrorpicks when his last name is actually Mirrordrinks? I MUST KNOW! In fact, I'm going to go to him right now and- ohh, pretty Obsidian Door...

--16th Slate, 1056
-Things progress apace on both of my ideas. Eeexcellent..

--18th Slate, 1056
-Because we could not produce the gold items she mandated in time, our mayor has ordered Asen Tathurasen beaten. The real "criminals" here are the miners, since they haven't found any gold nuggets, but foremost of them is Old Mirrorpicks and for some reason I doubt Dumat wants to order him beaten. Hee.

--21st Slate, 1056
-How is it cave spider remains produce such horrifying miasma despite their tiny size? You can almost see the disgusting smell! Eugh!

--23rd Slate, 1056
-So. It would appear Kekaththedak is now a Barony. With this comes the damn Tax Collector, the brutal Hammerer and the Baroness and her consort.

Oh dear. I suppose I shall have to instruct our miners to dig out some rooms and our masons and carpenters to make furnishings.

An interesting fact is that on the Hammerer's hammer, which must've been especially made to celebrate his going to here, there is an image of a dog leather thong. Paintedgleeful the Smooth Clash-Spine if I'm to be any judge.

Other migrants have also arrived. Two fisherdwarves, because the abundance of water around here. Hmm, now that I think about it, I doubt the baroness would be happy without some protection from a royal guard. Of course, this is in no way related to the fisherdwarves I just mentioned, they're just too valuable. They also have a companion who's a fish dissector. And a jack-of-all trades fishery worker too! And of course I can't forget the lye and potash makers! We always need more of those! Other are more useful. A weaponsmith and a metalsmith, for example, and a leatherworker who'll be able to use all that leather we have. We also have three peasants. A glassmaker, who would be useful if we had any sand. And a miner, whose usefulness is obvious.

Well, I always thought there was a bit of a deficiency in the number of marksdwarves around here.

Plus, I will be known as the leader who brouught us to the status of a 105 dwarf town! Go me! Bweee! I certainly deserve my tomb and rooms...

--25th Slate, 1056
-Oh great. Now Dumat wants green galss items. I suppose we have the magma to power a glass furnace, but where are we supposed to get any sand? Last time I heard we only had some silty clay loam in the sparse soil layer.

--27th Slate, 1056
-Sibrek Toldplanks has given birth to a baby girl today. She named her Reg Girdertrussed.

--7th Felsite, 1056
-My tomb is complete! Bweehaha har dee harhar! It's beutiful! It's amazing! I'ts MIIINEE!

Of course, it's nothing too extravagant. Just entirely constructed out of beutiful beutiful pretty pretty pretty galena... I also had two silver statues and two sterling silver statues installed in it, as well as the centerpiece sterling silver sarcophagus. Not as pretty as galena, but still. It's similar enough. Shiny, too!

--10th Felsite, 1056
-Alas, I am annoyed every signle day by the asymmetry of ofthe central chasm-bridge. We need two additional bronze statues and lack the bronze to make them! We need four more bars, which means we need two more, only two, and yet we don't have them! ARGH!

--12th Felsite, 1056
-I can understand the hammerer wanting them. The baroness and her consort probably want them for show. But WHY BY THE STONES OF IRONBRONZE DOES THE TAX COLLECTOR WANT A WEAPON RACK AND AN ARMOR RACK?

In other news, I am planning on building somewhat larger rooms for the commoners. They will all contain a cabinet and a coffer, courtesy of our masons.

--18th Felsite, 1056
-Tosid Kibnamásh, one of our Hammerlords, has given birth to a baby girl. She named her Zon Watchguilds.

--24th Felsite, 1056
-Nish Dumatgutid, child of Edem Eshonber and Rigoth Zonuthmik, has suddenly started acting strangely. For example, she has suddenly started speaking in a bassy rumble you'd associate only with an adult male dwarf. She's also acting like an adult instead of a child. It's like she's been possessed! She's also acting like one of our dwarves have when struck by inspiration. Possibly she'll create another leather thong; I wouldn't put it pas her.

--25th Felsite, 1056
-Skeletal muskoxen attack!

I've dispatched the Granite Lakes and the Geared Lenses of Paint, and sent the Permanent Odorous Theaters as an afterthought.

Also, the child Nish has claimed one of our craftdawrf's workshops.

--26th Felsite, 1056
-The skeletal muskoxen were handily defeated. Unfortunately, it's a well known fact that dwarves always carry their babies with them, and so we must admit that Edem's baby Stodir Sibrekod is dead, tron into by the skeletal menace.

The only other casualties were a pet dog and of course all the wile skeletons.

Also, the baroness demands that we better equip our soldiers. She has mandated the construction of a steel item.

--1st Hematite, 1056
-Things proceed, I suppose. It is summer now, and summer should bring human caravans if my memory serves.

--3rd Hematite, 1056
-The noble rooms are now fully furnished and complete. Now they'll finally stop pestering me!

OOC: In case you're wondering,

--4th Hematite, 1056
-Currently, Nish has in her workshop three kinds of logs, some dog leather, some red beryls, a cave lobster shell and two kinds of bones. I have been informed she is currently hauling some goblin bones to her workshop.

--6th Hematite, 1056
-Nish has acquired all she believes she needs. As well as the aforementioned logs, bones, shells, leather and gems, she has some rose gold bars.

I do hope it will be something worth all this.

--9th Hematite, 1056
-I am afraid Asën will not make it. He refuses water, instead demanding water. Which we don't have except for snow. And the snow is just too dirty, for some reason. Possibly for the same, or similar, reason as the skeletal muskoxen appear around here.

--10th Hematite, 1056
-Nish has finished her construction! It's Vumsharkomut Ungégbĺl, Gloomypoems the Failed Growth...
How... Cheerful... And inspiring... Wow...

It's a rather odd name, because it's an excellent pine flute of 64800 monies worth.

My theory is that she was possessed by the spirit of a woodcrafter whose rage and sorrow held him in this world. Quite possibly he was one of our own dwarves. Now that he/she has finished his/her life- and death -long dream, he/she can finally rest in peace. Odder things happen.

Anyway, Nish barely remembers anything from the insanity, saying it was sort of like being asleep, only not.

--15th Hematite, 1056
-A human diplomat has been sighted approaching our fortress from above. I can only assume the caravn is incoming as well.

Later: I was correct. The caravan has arrived, loaded down with goods. In fact, I think I'm going to have a few bins of goods sent to the depot in addition to all the stuff already there, just to be sure.

--17th Hematite, 1056
-The human merchant caravn has arrived. They have an astonishing selection of goods avaible.

Furthermore, Dumat was reelected mayor, so she has to deal with the humans.

The humans sure take a long time to get all those goods out of their wagons, though!

--20th Hematite, 1056
-The humans finally finished unloading their goods. But it's excusable because they had a lot of them. We bought all the metal bars they brought, all the wood they brought, all the iron items they brought, all the barrels they brought, all the booze they brought, all the armor they brought, all the weapons they brought, all the leather they brought, all the dye they brought and all the food they brought.

The sheer amount of goods traded was glorious...

--22nd Hematite, 1056
-Despite being married, the Baroness and her consort demand seerate bedrooms. Sounds like a political marriage if I ever heard of one.

Also, I ordered the chasm bridge expanded somewhat recently. Now we need even more bronze if we want it too look good with bronze statues! Augh!

--23rd Hematite, 1056
-Today, Asën Tathurasën died from thirst. It really is too bad that we have no water!

On a funnier note, the Baroness sure was spooked by the human diplomat looming over her bed while she slept. I must admit, I'd find it creepy too.

--25th Hematite, 1056
-The human diplomat's meeting with the baroness accomplished nothing at all, which is what I expected.

--1st Malachite, 1056
-It's so strange. A day will always just crawl by, but days plural zip past at the speed of light and then some!¨Don't you agree, diary?

OOC: Well, it's 00:50 here so I doubt I'll be getting in any more DF today until after doing some stuff I volunteered to do at the local church, so I'll be back at around 12 to 14.

--2nd Malachite, 1056
-What with our main adversaries being goblins and skeletal muskoxen, we have

quite enough piercing weapons. I've decided to have some blunt weapons made

instead. Two iron maces, to be precise, and some minimal copper armor as well,

until we can find a vein of either limonite, hematite or magnetite.

--18th Malachite, 1056
-The humans are leaving. I believe both sides are happy with what they've traded, so that's good.

--22nd Malachite, 1056
-Apparently, one of our new recruits, Reg Kuletstukos, was badly injured in a sparring accident and I wasn't informed until he died. Just shows how important it is to have proper armor. Exactly why I told the forges to start making it.

--28th Malachite, 1056
-After the expansion of the chasm bridge, I decided that even if we didn't have enough bronze for the statues, we could still make it look a bit better. I ordered our dwarves to improve upon the expertly-placed splash of red realgar in it's middle, which I found to be a very nice touch. It looks promising.

--1st Galena, 1056
-I like Galena!

--12th Galena, 1056
-The chasm bridge is finished for now, I should think.

Also, I completely failed to write down that I was building another wall on top of what we have, for marksdwarves who'll be able to shoot through the fortifications there. It's finished now, and encrusted with green vomit.

I'm going as fast as FPS and real life allows. No side fortresses except for one which I've only generated, no side gaming, nothing of the sort. Just DF. And I've been playing more than you might think, I've just forgotten to update.

Also, I saw One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest yesterday. The stage adaption, translated into Icelandic. Despite the translation and rather substandard facilities, it was an amazing performance and I do not regret the one and a half or somesuch hours I spent watching it.

Anyway, on with the updates! Did you know that Kolsvartur's squad is called "The Senses of Dye"? And he's a dyer!

--1st Limestone, 1056
-Well, my tenure as leader is already halfway over! As I've said before, days plural fly past faster than an elite bowgoblin fires arrows!

--5th Limestone, 1056
-I've got an idea. It's a brutal idea. It's a great idea. It's a gladiatorial pit. I have only the faintest idea of how they work, but I've ordered them made anyway.

--13th Limestone, 1056
-Finally some actual action. A goblin snatcher! Admittedly, as soon as he was spotted, he fled, without acquiring his quarry.

--14th Limestone, 1056
-Dodók Biteorbs, a metalsmith from a long line of metalsmiths, has begun acting strangely. His behavior reminds me of the child Nish's. That is, he's acting completely different. I wonder if he'll make another cheerful pine flute?

By the way, I heard someone play it. It transformed the well-known song "Gold" into something that can only be described as... Post-carp.

Anyway, he's claimed a magma forge, so he'll probably not make a pine flute. Maybe a copper flute, because that's the first item he claimed. A copper bar, that is, not a copper flute.

Also, another goblin snatcher was discovered. Discovered by Sarcesh Fountainwhite, who was certainly not going to let a goblin have her baby. The carnage was joined by Gearcounseled, one of our war dogs. Unfortunately, there was nevertheless a distinct lack of limbs flying around.

--15th Limestone, 1056
-Yet another goblin snatcher. Found him right next to a large amount of war dogs.

Also, our friend Dodók Biteorbs has acquisitioned both bronze and black bronze bars, plus some turtle bones.

--16th Limestone, 1056
-Some rough yellow spessartines. Whoever thought of storing some uncut gems surely was wise!

--17th Limestone, 1056
-My, I've been making a lot of entries lately. Anyway, the caravan from the mountainhomes has arrived, bringing some lovely lovely goods. I hope it's galena or billon, but I wasn't the leader back then, so I wouldn't know. They're probably bringing wood though.

Anyway, we also had a goblin ambush uncovered by our war dogs. One swordsgoblin leading a group of lashers. How pathetic. Oh well. Time to see what those levers do! Bwee!

All our soldiers have been told to defend the fortress, except for the rookies. We shall see how it'll go.

What's worse though, is that I am currently writing this as I run back to the safety of the fortress.

Finally, our most recent reports place Dodók at:
1 x Copper bars
1 x Bronze bars
1 x Black Bronze bars
1 x Turtle bones
1 x Rough yellow spessartines
1 x Obsidian
1 x Cave Spider Silk cloth

And he's still not satisfied!

Oh, and apparently, one of the levers operates the drawbridge in our defence system. I don't know which, though, and neither do I know what the other one does.

--18th Limestone, 1056
-The goblin ambush was obviously well planned, because if they had been undetected, they could've gotten us right before the caravan came, and then gotten the caravan too. As it is, I'm not too sure of the caravans fate. Mayhap it'll survive, mayhap it won't. I do hope it will, though.

--19th Limestone, 1056
-My fears got the best of me, I'm afraid. The caravan guards massacred the goblins.

However, we cannot lower the drawbridge without squashing the caravan. Unorthodox action must be taken! Or rather, it's quite orthodox to us dwarves, but still, it felt right to call it unorthodox.

Finally, Dodók Biteorbs has started his construction. In addition to what I have listed, he has acquisitioned a turtle shell, some logs and some red flash opals. This will be one of the more valuable artifacts we will have here, I'm sure of it.

--23rd Limestone, 1056
-Erk. Another goblin ambush. This time, axegoblins led by what seems to be a wrestler. We'll see if they'll fare any better.

Oh. Apparently they all got killed, with the guards coming out of it with nary a scratch.

Later: Dodók Biteorbs has finished his construction: a copper throne! It's called Sterusbasen Bëmbulothsal, Drivespray the Mechanical Sewer. Apparently, it's got some intricate mechanisms to dispose of various bodily byproducts using only a little water. Perfect for the gladiatorial pit!

-Tonightiday is the tea-time of infinity. Total reality dysfunction apparent. Why won't you fly is it because it's not possibly no it's because it's a kite lookit it's a kite fly fly pretty kite like a plane an aeroplane wroom wroom wroom Immelman turn ratatatatatata hahaha...haha...haaaa..... BANANA!

OOC: See the thread in bug reports.

--1st Sandstone, 1056
-Strange... For some reason, we have the deconstructed remains of all the wagons and all the contents of them, but no records of any trading done at all. I ordered the tunnel-digging ceased, because the traders appear to have gone on their merry way.

What by the earth of Ironbronze just happened?

Also, our glassmaker friend Urvad Olindegël has decided to take the place of our town liaison and is constantly following our mayor around trying to get a meeting with him.

OOC: He's constantly trying to attend a meeting.

--3rd Sandstone, 1056
-Despite our mayor's excellent work, our exact knowledge of this fortress' wealth is a teensy bit vague. Rather than force her to spend more time in her office, I have decided to take the burden upon myself. I'll simply refurbish my bedroom as an office and take a commoner's bedroom for a while. Then I'll start keeping the records myself.

--6th Sandstone, 1056
-Today, Feb Alĺthrab has become a working member of the community. That is to say, has become the newest recruit of the military.

--9th Sandstone, 1056
-I've been trying to figure out the convoluted bookkeeping system here. It's quite efficient I'm sure, but only once you understand it.

Also, The Silvery Green Corridors are almost ready for weapon training in my opinion.

----------
I have been playing a little, as you can see. I'll finish it tomorrow I should think.

-The most exciting event around here has been the fact that a cat, Ast something-or-the-other, was bitten by a cave spider. The gladiatorial pit will soon be complete, though.

--8th Timber, 1056
-Well, the gladiatorial pit is pretty much finished. Only a few niggling details remain.

This peace and quiet allows me time to ponder questions that are, ultimately, more important.

WHY IS THERE ARE SINGLE ROOM WITH BUT A SINGLE BUCKET?!

--18th Timber, 1056
-Apparently, the merchants left two muskoxen behinds... One has, by now, gone stark raving mad while the other seems to be suffering from depression. Odd.

--28th Timber, 1056
-Only three months left. On one hand, I am relieved that someone else will be taking the responsibility upon them. On the other hand, I am sad that my power should come to an end... But I suppose that the system was indeed designed to prevent anyone from becoming too powerful. It makes sense, and I shall acquiesce.

--10th Moonstone, 1056
-The new residential section is being hewn out slowly enough. I've thought of some improvements to the next one, which I'll definitely implement.

OOC: Kolsvartur has an account of 6000 or something. Probably from all the record-keeping he's done.

--16th Moonstone, 1056
-While digging out another section of the new bedrooms, our miners struck a vein of native copper.

--10th Opal, 1056
-We've mined out a small platinum vein we discovered while mining out the new bedrooms. Otherwise, things proceed apace.

--11th Opal, 1056
-I located Rinmolsárek today. Apparently, it had been made into a gear assembly in the small wind-powered mill we have.

--25th Opal, 1056
-Well, we certainly have no shortage of ghost roaming this place apparently. Yet another dwarf has been possessed by a spirit, porbably intent on making a felsite thong or something. Anyway, the dwarf is named Zulban Borerock, a stonecrafter by trade.

--1st Obsidian, 1056
-The last month of my rule. It's flame shall soon be extinguished, but it will live on in the embers that nothing short of destruction of our home shall achieve.

Zulban has acquired some obsidian and pig tail cloth.

--5th Obsidian, 1056
-More pig tail cloth and some logs. And she still isn't satisfied. I'd complain if I didn't know of the immense value of these items.

--10th Obsidian, 1056
-Zulban has been going around collecting some bones from outside.

--11th Obsidian, 1056
-Zulban has, after grabbing some sterling silver bars and bandfire opals, started work on whatever it is.

I'm betting on an obsidian thong menacing with spikes of pig tail cloth and sterling silver, but Dumat thinks it's going to be an idol.

--14th Obsidian, 1056
-That copper vein is surprisingly rich. Odd, but quite possible. We've finally dug it out now though.

--15th Obsidian, 1056
-Zulban has finished her construction. It's neither an idol, nor a thong. Dang. It's an obsidian mug, Sirabromek, the Warm Lengths, and is encrusted with obsidian, decorated with pig tail and tower-cap, encircled with rings of pig tail, has an image of a giant bat in muskox bone, an image of a pine flute, probably Gloomypoems, in sterling silver, and an image of mountains in bandfire opal. Overall, it's worth about 50400 monies.

--24th Obsidian, 1056
-Four days left. Four. Oh well, it's been stressing.

--26th Obsidian, 1056
-You know, I don't think it's going to be too bad to stop ruling, really. I won't have to deal with any problems that pop up anymore, for one thing.

--28th Obsidian, 1056
-And so ends my reign. I think I'm going to have a good drink now.

1st Granite
By the rules we live by it has now become my turn  to lead our home. I knew that I was intended for the post but I didn't think I had to take it now. It was supposed to be another four years until it was my turn.  I guess it doesn't matter though, I will work diligently for the glory of our home. I doubt I will get much work done theese first few days as I will have to through the Hoardmaster's records,  check up on work assignments, check up on what's currently being done in the fortress and get myself an office. My first day and I already have a todo list with several items.

-Hangatyr

2nd Granite
Today I've been going trough the hoardmaster's records, they're not perfectly accurate but they're good enough. I think Kolsvartur will have them in order soon. Tedious work going through the records, but if I'm going to run things then I should know what resources are at my disposal. I'll also have to see if there are any maps or blueprints over our fortress.

3rd Granite
We do not have any blueprints. Apparently my predecessors saw fit to not keep any other records than their journals.

4th Granite
Ol Mirrorpick has been around since the beginning so I'll guess she knows where all tunnels go. I have sent out word that she should draw a map for me. The elves seem to be overjoyed by that fact that we don't cut down trees. What the hell is wrong eith them?

5th Granite
We do not have any Ol Mirrorpicks. Nobody knows where she is.

6th Granite
Strange muffled voices have been heard from the top level of the apartments. I will investigate tomorow.

7th Granite
Ol Mirrorpicks has been released. Somebody had walled her in a dug out copper vein. Why would anyone do that? The dug out copper hadn't been removed so I'm guessing it was just a cruel prank as somebody eventually would decide get the the copper and then remove the wall. Now that she is free and I have an idea of what our home looks, like I can get some real work done.

8th Granite
I've met with mayor Dumat and decided that two other dwarfs should take the positions of manager and broker. One dwarf should not have too much power. Stinthäd will be our manager and Mosus the new brooker. Neither of them has any experience of this kind of work as both are mere peasants.

10th Granite
Several of the workshops are cluttered, I have begun designating new stockpiles to solve this. I have also begun hauling up stone to the surface in order to build some walls.

11th Granite
A goblin ambush. Dodok the blacksmith ran across a few goblins with crossbows and Tirist the carpenter found a squad of hammers.

13th Granite
Another squad of hammers was found. Five dwarfs killed by crossbows so far...

14th Granite
Six dead dwarfs and an elven caravan chased away before the troops could show up.

15th Granite
Seven dead now and I have been wounded as well... Aparently the goblins had run out of bolts when the champions finally found them. Lesson learned. No outdoor constructions without armed support. I think I will stay indoor. It's safer there.

The following have died
   Dodek Nitigvab“k, Blacksmith
   `Moocow' Rakustrifot, Former Leader
   Logem Tosidorshar, Engraver
   Uzol Matulamost, Engineer
   Tirist Stelidamost, Carpenter
   ZuntŚr Av‚deral, Leatherworker
   ‹teb Nishbubnus, Stonecrafter

16th Granite
A squad of Lashers today. Yes! I should definitley stay inside and I think I will have to send out regular patrols to prevent theese ambushes. I have yet to apoint a new captain of the guards...

19th Granite
Mosus can do this... I'm not going to...

7th Slate
Hangatyr gave this book and told me run things while he rests. It seems as he hidden himsfelf under his bed. No attempt so far at getting him out has succeded. We tried promising a nice barrel of wine if he would just get out but he just screamed: "Watch out! There might be one hiding in there!" and locked the door.

-Mosus

14th Slate
Besmar Asrungak has been apointed captain of the guards.

20th Slate
Migrants 25 of 'em. Only notable arrival was a Philosopher by the name of ezus Sesiramid.

28th Slate
Found a bit of silver. The explolartory shafts I ordered are paying off immidiatly.

5th Felsite
RAW ADAMANTITE! PRAISE THE MINERS! I hear the shouts echoing through the halls. I must see this myself...

6th Felsite
I've seen adamantite for the first time and feels like a letdown. There were only two blocks of adamantite. I have ordered the miners to check the floor underneath. There can't just be two blocks of adamantite, that would be just too cruel a fate.

7th Felsite
Logem Ugilkum died today. Logem was injured in the ambushes earlier this spring and seemed to suffer from the same kind of paranoia as Hangatyr. They both believe there are goblins hiding in the boose barrels.

12th Felsite
I was right. There is more adamantite underneath. Now we just dig out the vein, not the acutal adamantite as we don't have enough skilled miners for that task.

15th Felsite
Hangatyr has died, hopefully this will be the end of this nonsense about goblins hiding in barrels. I can agree that i would indeed be scary with goblins hiding in the beer but no true dwarf would let that deteer him.

18th Felsite
Possesed woodcrafter.

Edit: Apologies for spelling...

7th Hematite
He got everything he needed wich means another artifact for the glory of our home.

11th Hematite
The goblins have ambushed one of the walls in construction. Troops are nearby should be able to deal with them swiftly.

14th Hematite
Two more ambushes, one on the wrong side of one the new walls. The goblins thought they could sneek past a war dogs. The other ambush has run into another band of wardogs. All is well.

15th Hematite
A human caravan has arrived and their guards has helped to clean up the last of the goblins.

17th Hematite
Dumat has been reelected as our mayor. More importantly, we have found more adamantite.

12th Malachite
Everything is calm. The humans are preapering to leave. No more ambushes and more walls are coming up.

15th Malachite
"The razors of flesh" has been sent to dispatch a few skelks.

16th Malachite
Unbelivably enough "The razors of flesh" actualy went to their post at once and defeated the skelks. For once nobody decided to take a drink or expel said drink.

18th Galena
Kolsvartur has been possesed.

23rd Galen
Five days later and Kolsvartur begins his construction. Other than that... nothing. Autumn will be here soon and with it the dwarven caravan and more goblin ambushes.

27th Galena
Curlrope the spurn of fragments, a guppy bone mace, has been created. Yet another marvelous creation resides in our home.

10th Sabdstone
Two batches of migrants, one before the caravan and one after. This puts the current population at 126.

4th Obsidian
The current dullness was broken by a message that a smith named Feb had bled to death at the magma forges. There are no clues to what has happened at this point.

30th Obsidian
My time as ruler is over. A quite interesting experience at least. I will just end it here with a few notes for my successor. There is nice new wall, covering the entire south edge. All entrances through it are guarded by chained war dogs. There  also a bit adamantite freed but would advice against digging any of it as Ol Mirrorpicks is the only skilled miner availible. I've tried to construct a vertical version of the crossed axe and pick in front of the entrance, but I only managed to get halfway, everything sofar is made of obsidian blocks. There is whole lot of stone on the surface availble for construction. What else? There's a bunch of pointless tunnels and a forbidden bucket around as well. I think thats it... good luck...

-Mosus

It was fun to poke around someone else's creation.

Diary of "Rimmy" Rimtarostar:

1st Granite: Ah, I have arisen to power, and not too soon. Te previous ruler was a good one, but I am sure to trump him in so many ways. First order of business, though, is to find out where everything in this fortress is. . .

3rd Granite: After scouting the trailing passageways, and examining the system of storage and production, I have found that this fortress is lacking in both departments. Surely some old rulers would have seen the need for larger storage spaces? And to maybe streamline the production processes? I guess not.

4th Granite: I began work on the metal smithing operation today. Bars of metal cluttered all the shops, and I found loose coins in ever workshop down in that boiling hellhole. Personally, the idea that this fortress is so rich we don't have to even keep track of our coins is appealing, but as a leader I know it is important to be neat and clean.

10th Granite: I have switched over some useless woodcutters in exchange for a few more metalsmithes. Hopefully all this extra metal ore will be put to good use.

16th Granite: Ambush! a squad of speargoblins appeared at the southern gate! Hopefully the multiple legendary wrestlers can take care of that.

17th Granite: As the havoc calmed, I could see that our military training has been put to good use. Excellent work was done by all the wrestlers, and I have assigned certain squads to full- time duty on the southern and main gates.

20th Granite: An elven caravan appeared at our southern border, and we traded away some useless junk for their useless junk.

25th Granite: Another ambush, this time an axegoblin squad. They were distracted by a cow at first, but were soon marching towards our gates, and quickly taken care of by the lead spearsquad.

26th Granite: While our lead sqaud was distracted, another speargoblin squad was sneaking through are unfinished northerly defenses, and killed a young child in the process of removing a wall. I sent our other squad to deal with them, and the squad did as expected.

1st Slate: So far, it appears that my attempts to organize the stockpiles have been nil, but I have been producing bins nonstop, so this should sort itself out. I feel that this first month was an appreciated challenge, and cannot wait for the following weeks ahead of me!

OOC: The game runs at about 10 fps for me, so this will take a bit longer to get going.
