Santa's factory and his 100 dwarves
« on: December 11, 2007, 10:39:00 pm »

I've seen people mentioning this as a sort of challenge in the Toy Mod thread, but I think it's much better off as a succession game.

So here are the rules:
1) The purpose of this fortress is to craft as many toys as no one else has crafted before. Toys can be made of any material available.
2) No exporting of toys allowed. They must be stored inside until the end and preferably protected from thieves. If you need exports, use crafts.
3) One dwarf will be nicknamed 'Santa'. He should be kept alive and in good condition all the time. (would this be too difficult?)
4) Every player plays one year (typical succession).
5) The game ends on christmas eve. Then we have our bookkeeper count the toys we've made and see how well we did.
6) Let's try not to take much longer than a day on our turns. That way new people can jump in later and if there's no more players some of us will just take a turn again.

We'll see about the world and location, but I'd prefer a 3x3 map on a non-evil cold forest. Playing it on a glacier or mountain would be too much of a challenge because of farming and big maps will lag too much and be annoying to play.

What does everyone think? A go or no go? Anything to add or change?

Edit:
Succession order:
1) MyBeardIsOnFire (finished 12/12 01:07 PM)
2) TeDDD (finished 12/15 12:43 AM)
3) Torak(finished 12/16 04:35 PM)
4) Vanigo (finished 12/19, 02:17 AM)
5) Rusted Axe
6) PTTG??

I'd be interested.  Just don't put me in the first few, 4th (and above) is fine.

I think I'd be interested to this.  Mind you I've never tried a succession game and with finals approaching, I'd have to do this later too; 4th, 5th, 6th.

I am very interested.  Quick question, though: extra points for glass or metal toys?

Edit: all my finals are done the day after tomorrow (Dec 13th) so I will be free to play by that evening.

Edit 2: oh, and Santa had better be the bookkeeper.  He is making a list, he is checking it twice.  And maybe a Mrs. Claus dwarf for Cooking and Brewing.

HO HO HO!
I'm in, under two conditions:
-mod in reindeer
-everybody else gets the "elf" special job title.

Why? I want to see Urist Paintdrinker, elf, cancels craft stone toy; interupted by rampaging reindeer.

Ok, you don't need to do that, I'm in.

Oh, and I am ready anytime.

Sounds like fun, and I've been wanting to try a succession game. Count me in! I'll take anything but year one.

I think you should make it harder... I mean, a non-evil forest? So what, you make 2 farmers and a brewer and maybe 2 or 3 miners strip mine all the levels, give everyone else a craftsdwarf shop set to repeat make toys, build some hatches over the stairs and lock them, then go to sleep for the next 2 weeks because nothing will bother your fort.

Edit: succession game is not really a hot idea either with only 2 weeks to go. The tower to the sky game (first succession game for the new version) has only had 3 people play (2 of which who canceled part way in) and it's been going for almost a month and a half.

How about a Glacier map, as it IS Santa we are talking about here. Perhaps a glacial/forest map?

It doesn't really have to end on THE day. It's just Holiday Themed. On the other hand, who doesn't like a time-limit challenge?

P.s. I just realised; instead of taking down the Cart, leave it and tie 9 tame reindeer (or some other animal) down in front of it, by the deadline.

Yes yes yes.

And designate garbage dump zones on the wagon, then move ALL the stockpiled toys on to it during the last turn. Killing physics FTW.

Oh you, you... Dwarf Santa will personally excavate bituminous coal for you  :D
Still, I've considered your input, and updated my first post.

I've been looking around cold and freezing areas, but finding one with sand was difficult. In the end I settled on a tundra.
We are here:

Not a challenge? That we shall see.

Is the sand in the second Biome, because I don't see any in that biome.

:( My workshops were churning out the standard stuff. Silly never-before-used-mods me. I doubt this can be fixed now, unless I regenerate the world and replay my entire turn.

With good or bad, here's the finished save file: http://rapidshare.com/files/76109231/christmas.zip.html

NO ANVIL‽‽‽
Oh well, I got magmaworks all planned out for now, but DON'T PLEASE DON'T start them up without iron or steel grates blocking off the inlet gate. Remember: you can channel out the last few bits of rock from above without risking the miners. The other elves stopped by, so I had a few trade goods thrown together. Fortunately enough, one of the Idols was a masterpiece, so we where able to afford... well, a bag of tubers and fisher berries. I felt so bad for them, having to cross the barren wastes and face horrible monsters and all for two bags of groceries, I also bought the toys they brought. More updates as events warrent!
