Title: Demon Summoning Test (round 2)

Hello. I created a system that lets me turn your doodles into demons. And you can fight with those demons, pokemon style. I just wanna test it out. I need 2 or 4 people to do this. 8 at most. We're gonna hold a little tournament.

First thing's first though, you have to draw your demon summoning Sigil in this circle
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Thats all you have to do for now. However here are a few tips

1. Clear, reasonably thick, lines are much better than some scribbled ms paint pencil tool mess.  If I can't "Read" a sigil, chances are that its not gonna turn out too well.

2. You only get one demon for the test.

3. The sigil has to be DRAWN, a line drawing specifically. You can't put a freaking picture of your cat in there and call it done.

First come first served, and by that I mean first 8 (at most) people to post their drawn sigils will get in.

as simple as this game is, we have basically two inputs: creating a sigil, and determining among three options for combat.
once the sigil is generated, the game runs itself no apparent training, no "power points," no demonic development.

This is fine as far as it goes, but it seems like the combat could be reduced even further, or accelerated in some way, to focus the game on sigil generation rather than (wait for player b to chose between options a, b, and c.

When it comes to the simplicity in player actions/combat, this game is still currently a test. Once Piecewise is satisfied I'm sure things will become rapidly more complex and interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if players end up commanding multiple demons at some point. Whether that be in this test, or in a fully realized game who knows. This is basically a post to watch really. As for the combat question, I'd prefer a bit more depth in combat. I'm not actually playing though so eh. Of course, the simplified system is probably for the best if you intend to have team based battles at any point because just having multiple targets/allies adds a lot of strategic depth innately.

Of course it's just a test. But PW specifically asked if we preferred simpler or more freeform.

my response is: I like simpler, for a fast paced tournament style game. That means that the biggest chokepoint to the action is going to be the delay between player actions. Which can be remedied by having a standard auto-action and time limit.

If the system is developed for a more complex or freeform style, however, then I think additional game mechanics are going to be needed, and the game will invariably be a slower paced one.

I like the idea of running this as a simple (double elimination) tournament game a couple times before pushing it beyond that into whatever concept PW has for the final system. That way we find more of the kinks and cracks more quickly, and can flesh it out better. Of course, the drawback is - designing in one envronment is no guarantee of success in another environment. But it's at least a start.

This system isn't going to be as sweet if fights are going to take this many turns. Given that there's only three-five inputs each and AFAIK like two variables involved in the battle, why not match simplicity with brevity?

Melee

Originally the demon fights were going to be automated in this simple form, which I can switch back to, but I got away from that because there are a lot of powers that can be used tactically that can't really be used well if just selected at random. Of course that doesn't really show up right now since you don't know what they do.

Mep's attack hits Bis' flotsam shields and rebounds uselessly. Bis' on the other hand pounds Mep with a punch, splattering ink and body sections everywhere, but not killing.

The flotsam shields disperse.

Mep casts a glowing red sigil on Bif but just before the sigil can burn into the demon's flesh, it shatters.

Bif grabs the opposing demon with one and and smashes it flat with the other.

YOTTA WINS! Though not by much.

So, at this point the winners have two choices, continue with this demon or submit another design.

They can also vote on whether or not they want a simplified, no player interaction version that will be done fast, or a more expanded traditional RTD style one on one arena combat style.

I'm fine with keeping my current demon. I'm also alright with a more complex style of combat, but I'm a bit bias since I have 5 possible actions due to my powers and most of the other players only have 2-3.

While I don't get a vote, an automated version of the current setup would be better than manual rock-paper-scissors or whatever the mechanic is.

So far I have 2 votes for each style and egan with a vote for "New" which is a little confusing because both of them are new.  Does that mean "Expanded" or "Simplified" egan?

Or not.

Alright. I'm using your forum names on the map instead of anything else. Easier that way. Do post your demon name with each post so I can keep that straight through. Random names are hard to remember.

Cinnamonstick Sterile-Doge is hiding in the barnsen nobile! Here we readsen the e-books for the eldritch knowledge within! This is because Cinnamonstick is much smarter than any of its competitory demons! Or will be, at least. ehehehehehehe *hic*

Your demon appears in between some shelves in the front of the store.

JC Pennys for me.

And it can't be an American mall, if there are people inside it!
Your demon shows up at the front of the store, standing between display tables of cheap clothing and faceless mannequins. Some middle age ladies see it and start screaming.

City Gear
Your demon materializes on top of a table of running shoes. Some shoppers see it happen and are apparently dumbstruck.

At the center of mall, in the fountain.
Your demon rises out of the penny laden fountain.

Artefacto, why not.
Your demon rises from the ground inside a vastly overpriced and generically "Modern" furniture store. It results in much yuppie fear.

Build-a-Bear has a certain thematic appeal. However, after our recent discussion, there really is no choice:
Summon Corqufal, the Infinite Warlord, into the Children's Place.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Your demon materializes in a back corner of the store. Despite the name, there are no kids here. No one here aside from a clerk, actually.

Please post your demon name at least.

Biniffal walks through the front of the store, not opposed by anyone, and notices two demons; one tearing apart a store and another in a fountain. You decide to order your demon to attack the one in the fountain, since you have a better line of sight.

Biniffal aligns the ballista on his back and fires a steel bolt the size of a man into the other demon. The blow lands like a harpoon in the demon's side and it spouts watery blood.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Bissy (click to show/hide)
Despite being harpooned in the side, Bissy turns its attention to the demon in the store across from it and hurls a bloody whirlpool at it. The blow strikes the front of the store and tears it to pieces but the demon within leaps back, avoiding the damage

Spoiler: Action (click to show/hide)
The first demon Mod sees is the one controlled by Egan, right across from it, through the open front of the bookstore. Mod points at the demon and utters something unspeakable. A mark, a glowing bit of angellic script written with lightning, appears above that demon's head.

We shall pore over a few of the countless tomes contained here, searching for the nuggets of eldritch wisdom surely contained within this strange plane! Why, this is the more alien Hell we've ever encountered! No fractal pillars holding up reality to be seen! How does it not collapse into a suffering singularity!?

If any wretch comes this way they shall suffer the Curse of Ignorance!

Spoiler: Cinnamonstick! (click to show/hide)
Cinnamonstick feels the cursed mark settle over him and turns to curse the one that did it. The mark appears on the demon's skin and shimmers there for a moment before it cracks and then shatters, unable to inflict itself upon a demon of such fortitude.

From Hot Topic: a pair of Jeans
From Hat World: a Top hat, a cowboy hat, and a beanie
From Victoria's Secret: A comfortable, form fitting bra. Yes, I mean form fitting for Corqufal.

Only set fire to the stores which are rude to Corqufal. Running in terror or hiding and trying not to cry are not counted as rudeness, but other methods of refusing service will be.
