A drawing of a dwarf slaughtering several goblins. The goblins are screaming. The dwarf is laughing.

[Edited last post, on further consideration]

You begin drawing a dwarf swinging an oversized axe, decapitated living and dead goblins before him and around him. First the figures, then you erase the lines, add the details... you must say, you're getting better at this. Though it was more fun when you just drew starting with a hand or something, figure outlines be damned. With just a few lines, you realized how to give the goblins an expression of terror, then you start detailing their faces a bit more, adding the shading. Then you stop, because the extra detail on their faces kinda ruins the wonderful expressiveness you got with that first pass over their heads. But you do finish doing their ears. The dwarf's beard winds up a mess of curly lines as you try to shade it, but you smudge it a bit and it looks somewhat better. It's all starting to look very metal.

As you start to experiment with drawing and shading a pool of blood, you realize this has to have taken more than ten minutes, so you pull out your phone. 6:54! Where the hell is everyone? You start packing up your notebook. Ugh. You hope the class wasn't canceled. Otherwise you missed breakfast for nothing. But, time to go check if it was moved today.

Wait.

6:54? How the hell did you get here before you even... unless... no. SHIT! You always, always forget! Daylight savings ended! You aren't a couple minutes late or early! You're an entire hour early! Well, crap! You've run all the way here with no breakfast. For nothing. And now, unless you ran back again, you probably still wouldn't have time to fix and eat breakfast toast, with that POS toaster in the dorm. You could probably get a shower in, though. But maybe it would just be better to stay right here until class really did begin.

Well, crap. What now?

Is there anybody in the building? If no, why is it unlocked?

Whatever you do, you're not going to just sit there, engrossed as you were in your doodle. Packing up, you step out into the hall. The computer lab's on the first floor, so you might as well go down there to check if the class is canceled, or relocated. Just in case. You decide to take the stairs this time, noting as you do that every office door seems to be buttoned up. Not surprising, given the hour: it must suck if anyone had to come in this early, and if they did they probably wouldn't want to be bothered. Which you realize might be a problem for visiting the computer lab but, as luck would have it, you find the door unlocked once you reach it.

The computer lab is empty, including the desk at the back where the TA or minder usually sits. Hmm. Usually, aside from the ones at the libraries, the computer labs always had someone minding them, and if there wasn't, the door would be locked. But, here it was, wide open and unattended. The phone on the desk begins to ring, but you ignore it: no reason not to check your stuff, after all. The nearest computer takes a couple minutes to boot up, after which you are confronted with the login screen. Okay, no problem. Or not. Damn. And now you remember. These differed from the library computers in another way: instead of logging on with student ID, they needed the daily password. Provided by the attendant.

Crap. So much for that. Looks like you'll have to go back to the dorm if you want to check your stuff. Or go to the library, though that's further. You exit the lab, then go down the hall and exit the building. Now that you don't feel so rushed you take another glance at that medical booth thing. Hmm. It was blood donation, after all. But where'd the guy manning the stand go? Probably wandered off. And you wouldn't blame him: can't be too many people around to talk to about charity before 7 AM, after all.

You're struck with the idea to go pick up the phone for some reason, so you go back inside. Unfortunately, it seems to have stopped ringing by now, most likely while the computer was booting: you'd tuned it out. Ah well.

It's one of those old-ish, blocky, beige office phones, which seem to exist in classrooms and school buildings everywhere. No voicemail, not even caller ID. You suppose they mostly serve as a clunky intercom within the University, or for calling emergency services if need be. You wonder if you ought to be messing with this phone, though. It's not explicitly stated anywhere, but you've always gotten the feeling that phones like this are only for whoever's supposed to be sitting next to them.

Look around for anything else of interest, such as the daily password. If none, check the booting computer and bypass the password via Commandline.

Then, study for the test you just remembered you had.

While you're there, you figure you might as well check around the desk for the little slip of paper containing the daily password. No such luck, though. Whoever's supervising the lab today must have it on them. Or maybe they get it electronically, you don't know, but you've seen it on paper in the other labs before. In any case, not here. The desk doesn't even have any drawers: just the surface on top that the phone rests on, and a hole in the corner for cords in case someone brings their laptop.

Last week you'd been cooped up in boring rooms like this, studying for midterms. White walls, white linoleum floor, dropped ceiling with white fluorescent lights, always air conditioned to be just a tiny bit chilly. Good for staying focused, you supposed, but always slightly uncomfortable. Thank goodness midterms are over. You won't have to expect any more tests for a while.

You walk back over to the booted computer and move the mouse, bringing up the login screen again. For some reason the thought crosses your mind to try to hack it somehow, but you have no idea how that's done. Maybe that's just your brain trying to think of excuses to not have to walk all the way back. But, looks like, if you want to check the internet, you're going to have to go back to the dorm. Or the library, if you felt like extra walking for some reason.

With that, you head outside again. If you're going to go check computer stuff, it's probably best to get a move on. You take a moment to grab a flier from the blood donor booth. The guy doesn't seem to have returned yet. Probably off to solicit somewhere more lively, you figure. The main campus path looks pretty deserted here.

Find the master cable that powers this room and cut it.
