Other Games / On Touhou: Where do I start?
« on: April 12, 2011, 09:29:48 pm »
I've always had a soft spot for the "bullet hell" genre as a kid, and now someone's convinced me to go and try the fabled and many-storied Touhou series.

Thing is, I have no feckin' idea as where I should begin.

What should I do? Play them all in order, or get game x y and z or whatever? How should I get them?

Some help would be much appreciated.

Creative Projects / I want to write stories...
« on: February 11, 2011, 08:25:43 am »
But I have a problem.

I never seem to get past the 'brainstorming' stage.

I scribble down ideas, but I just can't get myself to actually, y'know, stick with an idea long enough. Eventually, any idea will become, in my eyes at least, boring and I ditch it for another. It's been bugging me for so long, and I intend to pursue a career in creative writing one day.

DF Gameplay Questions / Advice for fortress layouts.
« on: September 17, 2010, 04:26:56 am »
I have to face the facts; I'm shithouse at fortress mode.

I guess all my fortresses don't make it past the first year because the layouts that I design frustrate me from a practical viewpoint and an aesthetic viewpoint.

Any advice?

Note: This is on a fortress in general, not so much for apartment complexes, so on and so forth.

Creative Projects / The Worldbuilding Thread!
« on: August 03, 2010, 03:40:38 am »
(HERE IT IS GUYS)

Lately, I've been trying to make a setting for a novel I'm trying to write, and was simply wondering if anyone would like to see what I've dreamed up so far. I've noted that my work ethic improves considerably if there are multiple people who have seen my work and expect moar.

Even if people totally ignore this thread, at least I've managed to make one more in my life here at the forums!

So, let's get down to business.

The fantasy setting I am currently working on is currently unnamed, to keep things simple. Here's a map!

(hey, it's just the basics, I'm no cartographer/artist!)

The idea is that all three of these... landmasses (yes, I know, B should be labeled 'Archipelago') was once dominated by a expansive empire similar to the Roman Empire. It was considered by most peoples of the world to be the most successful and advanced civilizations in the world ruled most of the known world for several millenia.

Over the centuries, its people pioneered in dozens of fields, developing all sorts of fancy stuff to make life easier and making conquering the neighboring kingdoms/republics/whatever easier. Their greatest innovation was magic, which enabled them to subdue the surrounding nations with ease.

I've not done much about the magic system just yet, but I guess I can expound later on. Moving on...

For all its armies and magicians and stuff that the Empire had, it slowly collapsed over a hundred year period due to civil war, several natural disasters, corrupt and inept rulers and a final disaster only known as the Cataclysm. Most people claim that the Cataclysm, punctuated by earthquakes and savage plagues that flooded the Empire was merely a coincidence, and that is the accepted view nowadays.

The Cataclysm was in fact a terrible mishap by the Imperial Arcanists, the foremost magicians in the world. Their goal was to find the source of magic, and to somehow bind it to their will. Instead of doing that, they managed to blow shit up. A lot of shit. So much shit was blown up, the capital of the Empire is nothing more than a lonely, deserted husk of burnt-out dwellings and a massive crater.

As is per usual with empires that have suddenly lost all of their leadership in one fell blow, the Empire was in chaos. Thanks to the fallback plans that this paranoid bunch of weirdos had, the provinces that made up the Empire were (mostly) able to keep together. Slowly, though, they degraded into hundreds of warring states, all at each other’s throats for land/gold/grains/WIMMENZ (joke)/etc.

So, what do you guys think so far?

In the next part, I’ll expound on the cultural differences between Landmasses A, B and C, as well as the fallout from the Empire's destruction.

DF Modding / A little Graphics Request
« on: June 27, 2010, 05:12:36 am »
Thanks to the wonders of new computers, I've been able to play DF again. I'm making a Human Fort, and I play with graphics.

Does anyone have complete graphics for humans, so that all jobs/positions/whatever that dwarves would have, but for humans? I have no skill with making graphics, or doing all that complicated doohickeys with the text files to make them work.

DF General Discussion / A Town Renovation Project
« on: May 17, 2010, 02:54:42 am »
As the title said, I want to embark on every town in the world and give them...

  • Walls and gates
  • A cellar for every house
  • Improved castles, mead halls

Is there anything I should think about? Also, I'm not gonna touch the things inside houses, so as to preserve them for adventurers.

DF Suggestions / Scabbards and sheathes
« on: May 07, 2010, 06:00:11 am »
One basic thing I would like included in-game would be the scabbard. Why? With skills coming around the corner, after initial bugfixing and whatever's going to be done, us adventurers would like to have our hands free as much as possible. What with all the having to pick berries or butcher a dead horse, we wouldn't want to lose our sword! I propose that we enable the ability to make single item containers, designed for weapons. They could be made of leather, of metal or of wood. The key abilities of said items would be: A) the ability to store weapons without wasting backpack space and B) making it easier to get our hands free, so we can do other things. These sheathes could be, like all items, decorated, have quality or even be artifacts. They could be assigned to military members, but they wouldn't be necessary, as they currently don't do much aside from killing stuff. One could wear them on their belts, or on your back. The limitations of scabbards should be that they can only hold one specific weapon, say a short sword compared to a scimitar. One could also make slings, for ranged weapons, but all that is in the air right now.

DF General Discussion / Errors when genning a world.
« on: April 26, 2010, 05:06:06 am »
I'm trying to gen a large world (more space, more forts, more fun!), but when I'm at like, year 600, it crashes. I don't remember the name of said error, but its got my *redacted* in a viselike grip that I would love to have released. Any help?

Notes: I play with Baughn's accelerator, a slightly modded copy of the game, some minor fixes and no graphics.

DF Modding / Making better leather armor
« on: April 24, 2010, 05:37:27 am »
I'm just thinking... What if we made another material, like hardened leather or something and gave it the necessary tags to be used in leather armor, that comes up in another reaction, so that we can make leather armor that is a bit better?

Is this feasible or is the damage leather armor can take unchangeable?

DF Gameplay Questions / Tips for genning large worlds
« on: April 23, 2010, 04:21:16 am »
I so desperately want to play in a biiiig world, for the sheer awesome and variety. However, my system sucks balls, so when I'm at like year 500 (I still want 1 millenia to pass by) it crashes. Any tips?

DF Modding / Playing as a filthy Human.
« on: April 22, 2010, 04:03:44 am »
I know the whole [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] tag is needed, but I have another concern. Should I copy and paste most (if not all) the dorf position entries and modify them a bit? I just want to make sure I won't be missing out on anything needed for a good fortress town.

DF General Discussion / WHYYYY ISNT IT OPENING

I just opened my copy of DF, and nothing loads. It's just a black screen. What do I do?

Who reads this masterful intarweb comic? I know I saw some people who use avatars that are cropped from the comic itself... I just can't remember who they were.
