Title: I found a most amazing embark
Post by: Daetrin on June 23, 2010, 07:09:04 pm
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Admittedly it has no sand, but if you use a 4x4 embark and get in the right place you get an upright spoiler.  For me the big draw is a volcano and a water source right next to each other, on flat terrain.  Yes you don't need a volcano, but it saves a lot of time- and FPS-eating labor.

A similar embark that works for 31.16 can be found later in the thread here (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=60021.msg1647596#msg1647596)

Well I tried this out and it's certainly a unique spot. I think I'll build something here.

And an upright spoiler? Eh?

Nice setup. Ideas for this location?

BTW, you can buy sand in the latest version, right? Then glassmaking shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Ideas, anyone?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I got a cavern collapse on embark, and a ton of smoke/magma mist/whatever. There's a hill on the left, only 2z of usable rock. The hill to the right is tall but narrow. The shrubland extends out to the north, and doesn't have too many trees.

A city made of obsidian. It may require either a ton of obsidian blocks, or one hell of a casting.

Found this one using the same WorldGen info, but with Ironhand .40.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Flux, Obsidian, Sand. No sedimentary unfortunately, but with magma, who needs coal! :)

34 levels from Dwarves to top of mountain (upwards). (Volcano extends a bit more than that).
34 levels from Dwarves to river (downwards).
86 levels underground.

Oh, and the mountain is pretty much a sheer drop.

Flux is worthless without sedimentary. Iron ores only occur in sedimentary.

Uh, no they don't. Hematite (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Hematite) also occurs in Igneous Extrusive Layers (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Igneous_extrusive), and I have tons of it ;p Plenty of gold, copper and some platinum too so far.

Maybe for a couple windows. I played a sandless fort buying out all the sand from humans, elves, and dwarves for 12 years and only got a few hundred units.

So if you want to make something out of sand, be REALLY nice to elves, because they bring by far the most.

Alternatively, use Goblinite. ;) It's the only iron ore I've ever needed.

Wtf, cave-in on disembark? Two random tiles by the volcano.

Also, there is hematite showing at the very top.

Nice site, thanks (:

Of course most of my fortress is underground, that's just the outer wall.

Before you gen the world
go into raw->objects
open inorganic_stone_soil.txt and switch clay and sand_tan's positions.  you'll get this site with sand.

Just something I picked up lurking these forums.  So at best I'm a prophet not a god ;)

I use it a lot when I find that 'almost perfect' spot but need flux or sand or whatever.  Though I did it more often in earlier versions.

Yeah, I've been tooling around with it for a while, and actually wondering if I should try my hand at a succession fort here. I know it's not terrifying surroundings, but even so...it's an awesome embark.

I've been waiting for .31 to fix military til i switch from 40d. My current fort I've gone as far as creating lava traps to dump on the elves and i cant get the elves to attack me, cause i wanna lose the fort. After I got around 100 dwarfs, I had a accidental cave in and three nobles, a baby, a child and a kitten got crushed, and immediatly no more migrants would come to my deathtrap, so I've been slowly losing people one at a time, but my FPS is super low.

Hi there,

Nice spot :) Going to use this, but I figured I'd ask a few things first. . .

Precisely why is the volcano so useful? My semi-educated guess says the production of obsidian, but other than that is there a use that I'm missing?

. . . or is the accepted method to pump this stuff into a place where you can use it as fuel for smelters and such?
Title: Re: I found a most amazing embark
Post by: Xenoc on June 29, 2010, 03:54:46 am
It saves many z levels of pumping, and makes your forge industries independant of charcoal/coke production.

I find they're good for personal challenges.

embark with as much wood as possible, and a pick.
have the miner tunnel into the side of the mountain closest to the wagon, then have him try to save the other dwarves who have their labours all turned off. (includes hauling labours)

You have 7 lives, do your best to save the lumber!

Copy the stuff from above into world_gen.txt. Save. Open dwarf fortress, make new world with parameters, select the "awesome region" option on the right, go for it.

So is the flux in this random then? Cause I was able to generate this and start in the same position, but I see no flux on the map at all except for about 300 calcite. I know it lists marble, but if I use dfreveal marble is not listed anywhere. has anyone else tried this embark location and run into flux stone issues?

I am not sure, but maybe dfreveal does not list layer stones?  If marble is listed in one of the biomes on your embark screen there will be a couple layers of it in the tiles of that biome.

Mine had several layers of exposed marble in the hill in the (embark) tile directly to the right of the volcano vent.

Apologies for the potential necrobump, but I've been unable to recreate this map and I was hoping the veterans here could help out a newbie.  I copied the parameters to world_gen.txt and created a new world with the "awesome" parameter set.  However, the generated map looks nothing like the original post, nor have I been able to find a similar embark location resembling the original specifications.  Thinking that perhaps I was using the wrong game version (31.16), I then tried the same thing with 31.14 as well as 40d.  All of these were attempted with fresh downloads, so there was zero tampering with files outside of the copy to world_gen.txt.  Any help would be appreciated, this sounds like a lot of potential fun.

Do 31.12 worlds still work in 31.16?

If yes, above, how can I acquire a copy of 31.12?

You want to look at the raw differences as well, since there have been changes. Not updating should leave slade mineable, for example.

Ah... hmm. Raw changes could fix that by making it into a standard, albeit superheavy, stone (or ore). Or you could just make it unmineable. Either way.

Yes, you can fix it by making it a normal rock, but the problem comes because the game knows it's not supposed to be mine-able, but you can still mine it in that case.  It doesn't like that.

Nice, basically everything the original had plus sand :)  And fully 3.16 compatible right off the bat, as well.  It's also slightly safer, which may reduce fun overall but will allow me to test out some magma contraptions with less hassle (and with the you-know-what, I can have as much *fun* as I want whenever I please :)  Thanks.

Only fools (and masochists) deliberately anger the elves when they have the potential to bring trade goods that no other race can offer, such as giant eagles, grizzly bears, and elephants.

If I recall correctly, all the pack animals can carry much more now than they could in 40d. It's no longer quite as much an issue as it was in the past, so being unkind to the Elves may actually be a bad thing now.

go into raw->objects
open inorganic_stone_soil.txt and switch clay and sand_tan's positions.  you'll get this site with sand.
