Title: Good ASCII tile sets?
Post by: puke on May 18, 2014, 08:43:41 pm
Re-installing after a long, long, time.  Thought it would be narrow minded of me to go back to the tried and true Guybrush / Herrbdog set, though it has served me well for years now...

This is what I'm looking for, and what I've found thus far.  Square sets, preserving the ASCII, no requirement for modified RAWS:

Herbbdog (16x16):

Guybrush's version of the above (16x16):

Bisasam (20x20):

Myne (modification of Haowan's http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Tileset_repository#Haowan (http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Tileset_repository#Haowan)), packaged with the CLA graphics (18x18)

Taffer's (10x10 and 20x20)

also in 18x18 for CLA Graphics here:  http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=7209

I like the shadowed / chiseled look of the older sets, but also appreciate the clean lines of the newer stuff.  I'm also partial to some 16x16 creature graphics, like the Thirin / Beefmo stuff, so I have tended to prefer tiles of the same size.  CLA is fun though, so that opens the door to 18x18 sets.

There are some very nice creature graphics from other artists, but they dont often have complete sets of sentient races AND animals both in the same style, and I feel odd about mixing art styles.

If anyone else has others, I would love to see them.

curses_square_16x16.png is in the vanilla game and is a square ASCII tile set.

Yeah, but it's distorted due to sloppy scaling and really looks bad.  I remember the first time I tried it, before Herrbdog made his set...

I went back to the default non-square characters because the square curses set made it look like my screen was running at an unsupported resolution or something.

*cough* Shameless plug *cough*

I think it looks very cool. But I can't design fortresses worth beans.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If anyone feels inclined to give mine (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=128101.0) a whirl I really could use some constructive criticism. I intend to make as full and clean a graphic set as I can. I'd love to have anyones help that is willing to give it. The tileset can be used without the graphics set. The only downfall is that it requires the true-black color in the color scheme. Sorry for tooting my own horn. End of my shameless plug.

Now that I am done tooting my own horn. I am a big fan of this tileset for higher resolution machines.

Nice sets guys,  but none of those three are purely ASCII sets,  they each have graphical images substituted for the standard symbols.

*cough* Another shameless plug *cough*

It's all ASCII except for the slabs, which are celtic crosses, and the crowns, which I messed up slightly.

Since I love higher-res tilesets and don't want to only post my own, I'd recommend people to check out Nagidal's stuff here (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=101657.0 (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=101657.0)). It's clear, easy-to-read, and it looks nice.

Sorry. At the bottom of the first post when you started mentioning graphics I was confused.

If that is true then for 12x12 I change my vote to Lord Dullard.

But Holy Cow Dirtcopter77! That is extremely pretty! I love how you made the female symbol an ankh!

Thanks! I never bothered to make a thread for it here, but I might do that later.

Wow, nice scrollwork and embellishments!  Thats a pretty font.  Reminds me a little of the old Gold Plated tiles from DrD_AVEL.

I really like the super clean Nagidal 24x24 you linked, also.  But cripes!  It's huge!  I can play on the standard window size with that font at 1920x1200.... OR I can just use a smaller font and see significantly more of the map.  It's so big, I'm intimidated by it.

I have used the Marble Dice tile set since 40d.
