DF Modding / Modding in wax blocks?
« on: February 15, 2018, 02:29:38 pm »
I was planning to build up a honeycomb-shaped beehive fortress made out of wax blocks, but just as my fort was settling in and beekeeping production was ramping up, I realized you can't make wax blocks.

I was so disheartened that I retired the fort on the spot.

I've tried tweaking the wax crafts reaction to output blocks, but all it did was remove the wax crafts order from the menu.

Anyone know if it's possible to mod in wax blocks, or is it hard-coded into the properties of the wax material template or something?

Except for disease resistance and wound recuperation, all those traits are also fairly easily trained up by labor. And if you're creative enough, even recuperation can be trained.

Since kobolds don't mine, they steal all their metal and weapons. Hence, they can bring steel weapons if they're in the habit of sending ambush parties your way.

Note: I'm running 32-bit Windows Vista. I've been having issues with crashing upon startup in the most recent version of Jolly Bastion. After spending perhaps more time than I should have, I traced the problem back to the init.txt file

I'm not sure what the problem exactly is, but I just renamed the windowed and fullscreen fonts in the Default init.txt and replaced the Jolly Bastion init.txt with that.

I don't know if anyone else is experiencing similar issues, but this worked for me.

There's some finicky details. When a file is deleted, the space it occupied on your hard drive is simply marked as "free to use", and it vanishes from your directory. Any new data that is written can be written over that space, but specialized tools can recover those files provided that they haven't been extensively overwritten. Other tools can be used to wipe a file out of your computer extra-clean by overwriting it several times so that residual data is nigh impossible to collect. Not to mention registry entries for all the writing and deleting that the LNP does within itself.

But that's probably not relevant to what you're wondering.
The LNP folder is all of the LNP; nothing is scattered anywhere else. If you delete the LNP, you've deleted all of it. If you're on anywhere near a recent copy of Windows, however, defragging is automated. You shouldn't need to worry about defragging manually.

Guaranteed terminal height for a gobbo is about 8 z-levels. Less with steel upright spikes.

First fort, preceded by about six months of reading the wiki thinking about how cool it would be to play this game, if only I had the time.

I'm not very intelligent when it comes to time management. I did, however, manage to equip my first military without a moment's confusion. This is the sole basis of my self-esteem.

Beekeeping for me was really a set-it-and-forget-it thing. One hauler with beekeeping as a hobby, plus a couple dozen hives on top of the fort and an ample supply of jugs --> steady stream of royal jelly for cooking.

I can personally confirm that goblins that are not thieves or child snatchers can be dragged about from cage to cage to pit without incident, although passing merchant guards may slaughter the goblins. Thieves and child snatchers will break loose from dwarven grip and make a run for the map edge. I cannot confirm neither trolls nor goblin mounts.

Is there a way to edit in production of blowdarts?

I'm going to assume you know how to navigate the raws, and how to find the raws for your current game. If you don't, just ask and I'll elaborate. For an already existing world, you cannot insert a new reaction, but you can modify an existing reaction. First, find a reaction you're not using. Let's say Making Trifle Pewter Bars out of bars. In reaction_smelter.txt you'll find the reaction looks like this:
Code: [Select]
[REACTION:PEWTER_TRIFLE_MAKING2]
[NAME:make trifle pewter bars (use bars)]
[BUILDING:SMELTER:NONE]
[REAGENT:A:300:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:TIN]
[REAGENT:B:150:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:COPPER]
[PRODUCT:100:3:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:PEWTER_TRIFLE][PRODUCT_DIMENSION:150]
[FUEL]
[SKILL:SMELT]

If you want to make wooden blowdarts, you can replace it with this:
Code: [Select]
[REACTION:PEWTER_TRIFLE_MAKING2]
[NAME:make wooden blowdarts]
[BUILDING:CRAFTSMAN:NONE]
[REAGENT:A:1:WOOD:NO_SUBTYPE]
[PRODUCT:100:10:AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_BLOWDARTS:GET_MATERIAL_FROM_REAGENT:REAGENT_ID:A:NONE]
[SKILL:WOODCRAFT]

As long as you don't change the identifier (PEWTER_TRIFLE_MAKING2) you can make the name whatever you want. That reaction right there, you might be able to tell, should make you ten wooden blowdarts from one log. I can't make any guarantees- I have very little experience with modding, and I haven't tested this for laziness reasons. I assume you want metal and bone blowdarts too, and for that I would recommend going to the modding board and checking in with the workshop thread.

Because the fish pull on their beards, which makes them grow longer which is, of course, theprimary source of dwarven ego.

Why do forgotten beasts target carried babies before armed soldiers?

I personally use the Mayday set.

right now, they do seem to be a placeholder for something more extensive going forward.
This, mind you, describes just about all of dwarf fortress.

Prepare a trade depot and the bucket around an adamantine spire. Breach hell. Empty bucket. Drown hell. Yes, demons don't breathe, but good god would it be great. Also prepare for the lagfest of your life. You may want to back up your save file.

Bonus: Use the irrigated slade to grow plump hellmets.

Make sure they're all working constantly. If you don't see the text Idlers:0 on your screen, you're doing this strategy wrong. Actively party-poop by deconstructing any tables that some stray child tries to organize a party on. If they don't idle, I think, then they don't socialize. I did this with my first fort. Wiped about a quarter of my fort (of over a hundred) to magma accident. Everyone else said "meh" and got to work cleaning up the magma spill.
