Info:
A Space station 13 remake in unity finally released a playable version that is 'complete enough' to actually play. Content-wise its nowhere near TG2017 levels, although they aim to reach that sometime next year, but it is actually playable with enough basic content/jobs/mechanics to have some fun times and no freaken lag finally. It's also open source, and have had consistent updates/patches in git for years until reaching this point.

Notable Improvements:
Super smooth game play, no stuttering, frame drops, lag etc. (this includes movement and the UI)
Shuttles are drivable, turnable, crashable, can collide with the station to excessive destruction of everyone involved... (Stations can actually move/drift theoretically too)
Console/Interaction UI is quite a bit nicer.
Zoom-able (optional scroll-wheel zoom as well)
Speech Bubbles
Line of sight vision (not just tile-based, look at the screenshot/video below)
Win/Mac/Linux Support without using emulators/VMs

Warnings:
Early days of alpha, lots of bugs. Large fires sometimes lag. Most notably some atmos problems after restart and the registration server and server list have been getting ddos'd intermittently. If the serverlist is broken on the website, you likely can't login/register/see servers atm either (they are working on it). If you tried to create an account, but it keeps giving errors (cause the registration server is down), try logging into that account anyway when its up and it might work.

Only game modes are Nuke Ops and Traitor at the moment.

oh my goodness! am i dreaming? my birthdays not until later this year.

i loved the og space station 13 on various different servers but lag would always ruin the experience. porting the game to unity was a genius idea. i will be watching with great interest, i dont have time to play but i really want to.

Holy space lube, Batman. After seeing videos and hearing amazing tales from Space Station 13, I've always wanted to try it out. This looks like it'll be an awesome opportunity to do just that. I hope this project goes well!

Have you ever suddenly gotten the idea to murderbone as many people as you can with the L6 Squad Automatic Weapon that somehow spawns in shitcurity?

porting the game to unity was a genius idea.

I think you are the first person to ever type that without a massive amount of sarcasm.

although they aim to reach that sometime next year,
Hah, I don't think so... (I certainly hope not)

The thing about really popular open-source projects is that, for better or worse, they get a LOT of development over a fairly short time. Trying to play catch-up with years upon years of shitcode and fixing of said shitcode is... *Cough*

Definitely interested in seeing where this goes though! The concept of SS13 running smoothly, especially Unity SS13 is... Quite frankly, supernatural. I've gotta see this.

So, presumably, contributors will have to learn how to shitcode in C# instead of Dreammaker? I approve.

So yeah, the reason why they have had consistent development is because they do pay their developers a bit, specially they have a patreon (https://www.patreon.com/unitystation) then pick features / large bugs and put bounties on them that people redeem by committing/pushing stuff that are confirmed to be working.
I doubt they have absurdly amazing standards for their code but they do have some minimum requirements to be met before a contribution is accepted.

Of course, people can fork and do their own thing (although i think the license is one of those 'can't go close source with a fork so have to share sourcecode changes' ones). In fact i think the github has shown like a half dozen people forking the code in like the last 48horus... not that i imagine it's anything too exciting.

Hey, that at least shows an interest in the project to some extent! No saying what it could lead to, be it some wildly popular variant or some wildly unpopular variant that still pulls people in and gets the word out about the untainted fork!

And for as much steady, somewhat-quality work a monetary incentive can provide, you can never match the sheer content provided by years of hard-ish work by the Simian Typewriter Enthusiast Club; don't even try. Just do your own thing, and make it actually good!

The public playtest so far has been kind of horrible to play but I remain excited for once all the critical issues are sorted out!
