Title: Land wars 2: Electric boogaloo
Post by: TheRedwolf on July 09, 2019, 01:14:37 pm
I advise making your civilization somewhat unique from your generic medieval empire. I am not strict at all on themes, so go make your kingdom whatever you want it to be themed after. Hell, you can make a Goddamn Minecraft-themed civilization for all I care. (Don't worry, I won't judge you for that, I actually play Minecraft every now and then.)

Hello and welcome to Land Wars, a forum based grand strategy game! In it, players create fictional high-fantasy nations and send their armies after other players in an effort to conquer the world, or failing that, each other. It's a ton of fun.

If you're new, welcome, and read on; it may be a lot but I promise the game is less complicated than it sounds and it's absolutely worth it

You can now put your pitchforks with "TL;DR" engraved onto them down, the wall of text just ended.

If you want to join, PM your day 0 update! The deadline to do so is July 18th, after which point the game will start.

(Replace the placeholder fields with something else.)
Code: [Select]
Spoiler: Day X (click to show/hide)

Other:

Players can choose to leave this area blank. This is an optional space where people can put things such as the history of the kingdom, anything roleplay or in-character related, or it can just be a few random notes about your army and kingdom.

Note: this shit is not mine, it’s 0cra_Tr0per’s, but I used it with permission. Enjoy.

Why do I get a feeling this was created in no small part to use Electric Boogaloo in a title.

I can respect that. You know, they almost called Deadpool 2, Deadpool: Untitled Sequel. They chickened out though.

I'm pretty sure that the LW5 ruleset (which I based both my pregame flop and LW game that lasted long enough to have a first battle happen) had nothing about a player cap.

Either way, reserving. Also, I'm pretty sure the last LW game had almost no formatting issues in the OP.

EDIT: I love 189 day deadlines. Seriously, proofread any dates in your posts, and make sure they're the intentional ones.

A four day deadline. Shouldn't it be extended to July 20 or something?

Also, raising the playercount cap (or removing it entirely) would mean more factions that could do more interesting things. The LW5 ruleset that I based the version I ran on never had anything related to a playercount cap.

also: oh god oh fuck i can't come up with a kingdom oh fuck oh shit

HOOH! I gotta get in on this. I've got so many ideas, some less complete than others, and there's so little time!

Edit: I do hope you'll be willing to pause the timer if you need to give yourself extra time to write battles though.
As well as make posts to alert players when a day has passed, since timezones are a thing and not every player has the best memory.

Also, 0cra, since you're the most familiar with this, what do Supplies even do? Like what benefit do you get from a Supply(that isn't an artifact)?
Title: Re: Land wars 2: Electric boogaloo
Post by: Screech9791 on July 09, 2019, 09:40:19 pm
I'm a bit rusty with the finer mechanics of land wars, especially after... that incident (no it's not immediately related to the kazoombo pit, it was because I forgot I'm shit at writing larger scale battles which quickly fucked over LW1), but supplies are basically any interesting things your nation has that aren't there by default. Basic medieval-grade technology isn't a supply and all kingdoms have an infinite effect, but specialty weapons, unique resources, notable items, and other unique stuff would be a supply.

also i still can't come up with a kingdom pls2halp

Anthropomorphic ice cats?

On a more serious note... hmm. I'd like to play (I can probably reuse Amalthea or whatever it was called), but I don't know if I'll have the best memory. Ah well, I've got three or four days to make a decision.

(assuming, you know, the player cap doesn't fill up. hmm.)

I think I'll keep that brand of unoriginality inside Gridhood games, thank you very much.

Removed the cap.
Also idea: memes

oh no

Although I didn't get any meme/joke civ sheets when running LW1 despite my lax policy on theming, I can tell the inevitable will happen.

Gosh, I really do wish the deadline could be moved back some. Like, I'd really rather try out any of my six other ideas than just bring the Cookies back(though admittedly I do have some new options to work with for them), but I'm legitimately not sure it's even possible for me to make a new map I'd be happy with in the time that's been given, and that's not even including the time encessary to actually come up with all the ideas for the sheet itself.

Alright, I want some input on this. I've got a total of six different factions I want to play, and I can't quite decide on which one I want the most.

First: The Kingdom of Hallownest, from Hollow Knight. I have most of the stuff for it written already, but the main problems are two-fold; 1. Hallownest is a kingdom built vertically(downwards specifically) rather than horizontally, which works awkwardly with mapping, and 2. I don't really know how the Pale King would act, so I'm not sure how well I could play him.

Second: The Jenny Rich Monsteur Clan, from Ittle Dew. Not decided between Force or Industry focus. An entire army of identical purple-skinned girls in (often silly) costumes. Unit design is easy, but I have no idea what the hell their Supplies would be, other than maybe magic artifacts?

Third: The Crimson Court, based on Darkest Dungeon(but not the same as the DD Crimson Court). A collection of mutants who all uniformly and without fail crave the flesh of other sapient beings above all else. The leading group is Darkest Dungeon based insectoid-vampires, but there's also Pig Men, Psycho vampire fairies, and Fish People. One of their Supplies would have to be the Curse, but I'm not sure how it would work mechanically. There would be a lot of inviting randoms from the other civs over to 'balls' and 'galas', which are exactly what they claim to be, but the guests are more than likely going to be eaten before they get there, and the ones who aren't will come out of it having the curse. Inspired by this song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZsvL7-ovGw)

Fourth: The Kingdom of Cherrystone, from Wargroove. Almost certainly the easiest to make, because the sprites for all the map-stuff have practically been made for me, and all the units(at first at least) will be based on ones from the game. I even know exactly what the Supplies would be. I'm mostly just not certain how interested I am in playing them.

Fifth: The Felheim Legion, also from Wargroove. A sparse and snow filled land united under a necromantic ruler, where the dead and living co-exist in harmony. A much friendlier place than literally everything you just read would lead you to believe. I know what the units, hero, and one of the Supplies would be. The main problem is that I don't know what the other Supply would be, like at all. Also has sprites pre-made to use in the map. More interested in this one than Cherrystone at least.

Sixth: Horrorvale, from the game Horrorvale. A land where every single last native being is undead. Not even the objects are necessarily exempt. Blood flows like water, candy is money, and death is but a setback. And I mean that literally, every single thing from Horrorvale just kinda respawns if they're killed. All heroes are going to come weakened in terms of power to try and make this fair of course, the main question is just, would it even be allowed even with the nerfs to go with it?
This is the one I want to play the most, and there wouldn't be a question about it, if it wasn't for that whole 'respawning' issue. Yeah I could just get rid of it, but that removes a major part of what defines Horrorvales culture, that being the fact that death is just annoying. Necromancy is a big thing as well though, so I... suppose that could somewhat mitigate the whole 'no respawn means it's not really Horrorvale' issue. It's also the most recent idea by far, so it's almost completely unwritten and thus would take the longest.

To be fair, they're pretty much all taken from existing fiction, and I've been cooking some of these ideas up since before the first game.

Well, my map is coming along fairly nicely so far. Making use of what few reference images I have to go off of I've begun assembling a map of Horrorvale.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is only a small chunk of the full map, and the sprite for Horrorvale city itself, taken directly from the game, has been cut down to fit better. Though, after having just now remembered the scale of the map, I feel like I may not have actually needed to cut it down any, and that various parts of it could be moved outwards some.

Title: Re: Land wars 2: Electric boogaloo
Post by: Screech9791 on July 15, 2019, 01:54:19 pm
And guess who just realized that I ended up making a major part of my map be 0.12 miles lengthwise which means it would be only 6 pixels long. Might have to upscale it by 2-3x for the sake of said major part being actually noticeable and not a 2 digit amount of pixels worth of solid color, so I resized it to be 30x18 width/height.

Sheet made, sending via PM.

I also just realized I was apparently capable of making the mountain coloring the exact same as the Dark theme's background.

Oh, and if anyone missed the Land Wars 1 discord before it snowballed into-well, what happens in the LW1 disc stays in the LW1 disc, the new disc link is https://discord.gg/P8Qe4zh.

I've got the map underway, but I'm realizing I have a problem where I know very well what a small portion of the map is, and have no clue what the rest is like in the slightest. I've got a portion of the map that's 2 Square miles tall and a bit more than 3 wide, but I have no idea what to do with the empty space.

Log:
Log AABY-02; All remains quiet, though I do not expect this to last it is welcome. Though from what little has been seen by our spectral scouts, there seem to be some developments. The object that was seen streaking across the sky some nights ago has reportedly seen some amount of development, though no movement has been reported yet. Either the strange machine is assembling itself, or... no, it is likely that those residing within are simply awake during the day, as opposed to us being awake in the night.

I'm assuming this is referencing the MCD Saltshaker, the current base used by Mercdonalds' forces on this planet.

Not to mention it sort of screws over anyone who picked legacy, as their head start is pretty much nullified.

My headcanon for why my kingdom hasn't gotten reports on the other civilizations, or their maps until day five, is because in character, their long range scanning equipment normally used for conducting military operations was heavily damaged to the state of being non-functional in the crash. After update 4, others started posting their sheets and updates. So while I was writing up my Day 5 update, I mentioned in my log that the repair team fixing the scanners now finally fixed it.

Before anyone asks, yes, I will send in-character messages to each of the other civs in my next post in this thread.

EDIT: Day 5 update written.

I'm still not sure what the mechanics are regarding giving troops to other kingdoms, so we'll have to ask the GM on that.

The messenger arrives again, though this time it closer to sunrise rather than in the middle of the night. Where last time she seemed awake and eager, today she seems, well, tired, like someone who was awake long past when they'd normally be sleeping.

Poisonous undead flora and fauna.
The difference is that living things can die, but breed, while undead ones can't breed naturally but respawn when killed.

Today it is not actually the same messenger as the previous two times, but rather someone new. He stands somewhat short by the standards of a Child of Fanw, but is instead quite broad. He also arrives quite a bit earlier than last time. And rather than the strange three-wheeled contraption, he rides in on what appears to be a pitch black horse, its body cutting off a bit more than halfway down and instead replaced with trailing smoke.

Ah, fixed. And yeah, the first two are what I'm actually working on, third is just a general 'remember to work on this' thing.

Result of attack on TheRedwolf
After sending an army after the GM of this very game, you quickly realized that it was a mistake to do so. As soon as your troops arrive, they realize there mistake as they arrive in Hell. The last thing they hear before they get chased back to the surface is Next time Read My profile before you pull bullshittery like this.

The map is coming god damn it.

Doesn't the event mark the beginning of Day 11?
Also. I am guessing we have to dedicate a project to sending an expedition.
Should we make an attack strat on the day of the project starting, or when it's finished?

Also, if anyone wants the bbcode for attack plan templates that I took from LW4 (from the Nuzlocke forums, where I first heard about land wars), here it is:

Code: [Select]
[spoiler=Attack on X]
[b]Troops Commited[/b]
A list of all types of troops commited, and the numbers of each type. Also shows heroes used.

Total: # troops + # hero(es)

[b]Objective[/b]
Anything you want your troops to do at the battle site. 9 times out of 10, this would be "take an enemy city", but it can be any objective.

[b]Retreat Conditions[/b]
Any conditions that need to be met for your troops to retreat.

[b]Strategy[/b]
What your troops will do to complete the objective(s) you had in the plan.[/spoiler]

Of course, if you're doing a stealth attack, you'd just say who you'd be attacking, then PM the attack template to the GM, and after the defender PMs as much info as possible relevant to any stealth attack (layouts, where things are, where guards patrol, etc), the stealth attack results are posted in the thread by the GM. Duels have both kingdoms fighting on neutral ground, with both players involved posting the troops committed, and PMing everything else to the GM.

You know considering there's a fight likely to happen I feel now's a flawless time to oocly remind someone they forgot to equip all their guys with new guns despite mass producing them. Because you need to spend a small 2 point project to do that.

I hope whatever battle strategy you made doesn't rely on having modern weapons.
