Title: I'm new and I want some boats.
Post by: TimeTurtle on April 14, 2013, 10:54:57 am
So been playing DF for a little while now (enough time for me to essentially abandon all other games) and I recently tried to do some small modding things and succeeded. It was super minor and I just made some animal men races playable in adventure mode but I enjoyed messing with the game.

Anyway, I've always wanted to be able to buy or build a ship and take to the seas in Adventure mode. I really like the idea of exploring far away lands or at the very least waging a small war on a peaceful elven retreat. Would it be possible for me to mod boats into my DF game, and if so where do I start?

Its for the future. Boat's would be utterly broken if added now, Toady is adding multi climbing and trees and such, if you wish to see the changlog, go to the website.

Damn this linear passage of time. I've been reading the Odysseus and it's giving me a strong Adventure Mode vibe but with boats...

"Boats are the enemy of tiles. And tiles are the enemy of boats"

But...You could kind of do it with transformations, physically turning into a boat.

If boats are so impossible, how do wagons work?

Wagons are actually considered by the game to be finicky multitile creatures which involves some stuff that we aren't capable of modding. And they can't actually be ridden.

Riding on the boat is more than I would really expect. What if you could interact with a boat at a shore and plot a course and then just show up at that place X amount of time later? It's more like a fast travel system but between islands.

The closest thing I can imagine would be an interaction that transforms you into an aquatic creature called "boat". As far as wagons-as-creatures, word of Toady says that they'll be removed once mobile siege engines are in the game. It is possible to cross oceans, just, via swimming.

Not possible as far as I know. Unless there's something that could be done using Dfhack, but I don't really know much about that.

That would also make my airships (if fully-functional) hideously broken as well. Especially since they sail the skies.

No, probably not. At the very least, it would be more trouble than it's worth.
