Title: D&D 3.5E Campaign: Aperta Mundi: IC Thread
Post by: Orange Wizard on September 20, 2014, 07:46:35 pm
APERTA MUNDI
What is this?
This is my silly idea for a D&D campaign, in which there is no campaign. My plan is to create a world in which the players can explore freely. There will still be stories, and quests, and the like, but none will be "the" story of the campaign. Kind of like Morrowind's early game, but with fewer dark elves.

This is the IC thread, for in-game chat, declaring actions, and my DM updates. If you want to make an action in secret, you can PM it to me.
The OOC thread is here (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=143877.0).

Character Sheets

Welcome to the Kingdom of Hibernia
Hibernia is a large nation, spanning broad plains and dense forests. It is bordered to the north by frozen tundra, to the east by tall mountains, and to the south and west by open ocean.
The Ogledd River flows from the north-east to the south-west, providing plentiful water for peasants and nobility alike.
On the south-west coast, where the Ogledd drains into the sea, stands the great city of Seals-ey. With over a million inhabitants, strong walls, and a powerful army, Seals-ey is both the nigh-unassailable throne of King Cadeyrn and seat of power for the Church of Pelor.
Lords ruling the castles and villages dotted across the land have sworn fealty to the King, despite his great age.

Of course, your story doesn't begin anywhere near there. It begins in the otherwise unremarkable village of Fearleah, gateway to one of the few passes into the dwarven nation in the east.
Today is an important day. Hibernia's relations with the dwarves have been deteriorating over the past decade. Trade is scarce, and travel between the countries for any other reason is almost unheard of. Except today, for the dwarves have sent an ambassador to Hibernia. And the High Priest himself is due to meet him.

With whatever motivation, your party of five has met on the road to Fearleah. Walking together, about ten minutes out of town, you have a chance to introduce yourselves. But that's entirely up to you.

On that note, what do you do?

A rather enigmatic-looking fellow with long, silvery hair and a tall, pointed hat/hood walks on the edge of the group. He speaks in a scratchy voice.

The one eyed orc looks down at his companions with what amounts to boredom in his eye "Hello. Beard is good? Yes." with a long pause as he thought of the word he absently grabbed one of his hammers and, with an absent minded ease, began twirling it by the claw. "We is travel yes? Go to good place yes?"

Razed, noticing the conversation underway by the others, decided that this is as good an opportunity as any to introduce himself. He frowns somewhat at Wyrne's pronouncement of willingness to do anything for a price, but doesn't press it.

Shaking himself out of a thought, Mic darts to the front of the group and bows. When he comes out of the bow, he walks backwards, straightening his white jacket and pushing his white fedora out of his eyes.
"The name's Mic Ehal, Professional Miscreant, Entertainer and Ladies' Man.
Beards are nice. Walk into town with one, cut it off, and walk right on out. The ladies like 'em, too. Sometimes.
We'll have to see if its a good place, Hammer Man. I can call you that, right?

With everyone in fairly reasonable agreement, the party continues down the road, (presumably) chatting along the way. Before long, you reach the crest of a hill, at the bottom of which is nestled the village of Fearleah.

The village consists of two dozen or so buildings scattered haphazardly through the valley. Most of the buildings are small log huts, dug into the ground, and covered by soil. One building stands out. It's much larger than the others, fairly close the the village centre, and has a well out the front.
Around the well is gathered forty or so individuals dressed in peasant attire. Some carry miscellaneous farming equipment. They appear to be waiting for something.

The crowd seems pretty excited, but not in a manner reminiscent of "holy crap priest is real angry with dwarf dude". If both or one of the High Priest and ambassador have arrived, it's not obvious where they are.

Veneficus cuts himself off before he gives too much away. He speaks to his companions.

(http://s28.postimg.org/4dkqywuuh/wizardtalk.gif)"Instead of just speculating about what these people are doing, why don't you just ask?"

He walks up to the nearest peasant, taps him or her on the shoulder, and asks,

The peasant wrings her hands. "The, uh, the ambassador and his guards are in the tavern, just over there, sir." She gestures to the large building. "He came this morning and told everyone that he was going to stay there. We were going to have the High Priest stay there, but now the ambassador and his guards are staying there, and they don't want anyone else to go inside, so we needed to clean Casteer's old house so the High Priest could stay there instead.
It's a dreadful pickle. Sir."

Veneficus facepalms. It seems all too obvious that the ambassador is up to something. Locked himself in the tavern, alone with his guards? Supposed to meet with the Priest? Priest doesn't show? It's almost painful, in his mind.

(http://s17.postimg.org/ypww4fpwr/wizardhand.gif)"I need to get into that tavern. Now."

But then he has a better idea.

(http://s28.postimg.org/4dkqywuuh/wizardtalk.gif)"Wait. I have a much better and more entertaining idea."

Veneficus moves over to the wall of the tavern and casts the Message cantrip through the wall. He indicates the entire building as his target for it, and uses it to whisper, in a god- or conscience- like manner, to all of its inhabitants:

(http://s28.postimg.org/4dkqywuuh/wizardtalk.gif)"I know you have done it. You cannot hide it from me. Admit it, lest you never atone and be cast into the Nine Hells forever."
Title: Re: D&D 3.5E Campaign: Aperta Mundi: IC Thread

The peasant girl runs up to Wyrne, saying "Sir! You misunderstand me, sir! We've already cleaned the house, sir!"

...

Meanwhile, Veneficus casts his spell, and (Listen roll 14) hears some discussion from inside in Dwarven.
The crowd shuffles uneasily. They don't know who these strange people are, but they certainly don't like what they're doing.
After a moment, the door swings open, and seven dwarves file out. Six are covered in thick leather armour, and the seventh is wearing elaborate fur and velvet robes. He (she? It's hard to tell.) speaks thusly:
"Whadda you playin' at?"

After asking around a little in the crowd about the meeting, Razed was at a loss. The High Priest should have been there already. They hadn't passed him on the road. Or had they? He frowned. The strange gnome and the human with the two maces had looked sort of shady... Maybe they'd kidnapped him before joining the rest of them? Even a priest of HIS power wasn't omniscient. Even the GOD he worshipped wasn't. Although Pelor was a good sight more powerful then the host Razed sustained. Even if they hadn't, they might know more about this then HE ever could. Paladins and the underground don't usually mix well. Throughout all this, the Forgotten Gods clamoured in his head for attention. They had waited FAR too long for this moment to be stopped by something so trivial. Razed soothed their worries with a calming thought and asked around for Wyrne's whereabouts. First things first. Find Wyrne and the gnome. Once the meeting was back on track, he could resume his mission.

Purpose in mind, Razed asked around a bit for Wyrne. One of the peasants said he'd seen a young woman running after him, after Wyrne had left down a side street muttering something about cleaning. Razed walked down the street he'd indicated, loosening his morningstar in its belt loop. On the off chance that Wyrne WAS involved directly in the disappearance of the High Priest, he'd best be ready.

Having followed Veneficus to the tavern, in hopes of seeing the dwarvern ambassador, he scratched his nose in annoyance "You have failed yes? We go now? No fight yes?" though Lanius would much prefer a fight as opposed to a lack of one, the fact remained that seven on two odds wouldn't be the best.

(It's moving a lot faster than I anticipated. Oh well. Time zones will soon sort that out. Also, accents are hard, so just imagine this dwarf speaking in a stereotypical Scotsirish accent. My text indication is going to be inconsistent at best.)

The dwarven guards arrange themselves in a circle around the ambassador, who speaks.
"I don't know what you're talkin' about. The Hight Priest, he isn't here, yet. Me'n my guards here were havin' some ale, then this wizard over here starts prattling on 'bout how we're goin' to Hell."

Hearing the assortment of strange adventurers speaking what appears to be nonsense, the ambassador shares a look with his guards, and they begin filing back into the tavern.
Malkor (attack 7+0 vs AC 10) waves his spear in the direction of Veneficus, but can't quite hit him.
Wyrne (sleight of hand 9+4=13) finds a copper coin in one peasant's trousers.
The peasants are now shuffling about nervously. They can see it's about to turn into a fight, and if nothing happens...

Aaarrroooooooo!
Aroo! Aarrooooo!

The sound of a horn rings out over the valley. Everyone freezes and looks for the source of the sound. From the west road, three men on horseback are approaching at a gallop.

The riders slow down as they approach the village. They stop about thirty feet away from the crowd, right in front of Lanius. From here, it's much easier to discern who they are:

One is an old man, thin, frail, and wearing a stained grey robe. His hair is white and patchy. His skin is wrinkled and pale. His horse looks to be in similarly bad shape.
The next is a young man, strong, healthy, with thick black hair, wearing a spotless golden robe, and holding in one hand a shining golden scepter. Gold is the colour of high-ranking clergy in the Church.
The last man is middle aged, moustachio'd, and dressed in battered leather armour. He has a short sword in his hand and a shield on his back.

The young man is the first to speak.
"Make way for the High Priest of Pelor, orc, lest the wrath of God strike you down."

The young man walks up to Razed and inclines his head.
"My name is Father Eogan. I am here to escort the High Priest" - he gestures to the old man - "to meet with the dwarven ambassador. I must apologise for our delay. As it turns out, Plane Shift is a surprisingly difficult spell to aim."

Meanwhile, the old old man waves to the ambassador, and walks around behind the tavern. The dwarves follow him, leaving the crowd behind. The armoured man ties up the horses and gives them some sugar cubes.

They cannot manifest or create miracles the way the Usurper Gods can. Who would believe in a god no one remembers or knows exists? But they will believe in him, will EARN their confidence. For too long the order of the Forgotten Gods has waited, sending diplomats to every religious leader across the land, petitioning for a place amongst the Usurper Gods. Malkor decides to stop waiting around and tend to any sickness among the villagers.
You ask around for anyone who is sick or injured. But as far as you can tell, everyone here is healthy and strong.

Investigate the blacksmith and market to see what I have to work with.
The village is too small to have a market. You climb the hill to the blacksmith, and take a look around. Apart from some worn tools, old farming equipment, and deteriorating furniture, the shop is pretty much empty.

"Zehr gut." Lanius said to himself as he stood from his work and walked out the door, perhaps crossing paths with a Paladin on the way, to go search for the others he had met earlier. Perhaps they'd have a task to accomplish.
You head down to the centre of the village, just in time to see two thieves in action.

...

Mic gathers the attention of the priests' guard, and three peasants who were walking past at the time. (Fascinate: perform roll 14+4=18) When he begins to dance, the guard walks forward and sits a few feet in front of him, watching intently.
The other peasants share a look of confusion, but watch the crazy gnome anyway.

Meanwhile, Wyrne ducks behind a conveniently placed shrub, covers his face with a cloth, and (hide roll 18+5=23) stealthily sneaks up the the horses.
(search roll 20+1=21) Quickly glancing over the saddlebags, Wyrne swipes a pouch containing about fifty gold coins, Eogan's gold scepter (which is very heavy, it might be solid gold?), a bag of minor spell components, and a silver signet ring with the emblem of the Church of Pelor imprinted on it.
There's also some other stuff - rations, water, and horse treats - but the peasants have lost interest in the dance, and the guard has recovered from his trance. He's not looking towards you just yet...

Melt into the shadows. Hide, get out of town for a bit, wait until they stop suspecting stuff. Maybe signal Mic to come meet me. I'm sure he can make an excuse.
You make your way to the edge of the woods on the south side of the village. (hide roll 13+5) It doesn't look like anyone has spotted you. The trees are not dense, but there's enough foliage here to keep yourself concealed.

This place is pathetic. Its only importance is geographic.
Razed heads back to the area outside of the tavern.
The elf and possibly one or two of the others might be useful. Nothing else here really is.
Remember locations in the nearby countryside. If memory fails, accost random peasant with questions to find out.
You return to the tavern and start asking around for details. (gather information roll 20+2)

Most of the immediate area is farms and fields. To the south is a long stretch of woodland. Beyond the valley to the east are rugged foothills leading up to the dwarven lands.
About two and a half days westward is the market town of Lundenwic. It's smack in the middle of Hibernia, on the coast of the Ogledd, making it a very wealthy hub for trade. It and much of the surrounding land (including Fearleah) is ruled by Lord Fedlimid.

"Hm... Is not my job." Lanius says with a small frown "But may be reward. Is bored anyways."
Throw Light Hammer at nearest thief in an attempt to knock him out.
Unless, of course, they are my allies. In which case, don't do that.
With some thought, Lanius decides that Wyrne is his ally, and not to attack him. Unfortunately, after that moment of indecision, Wyrne has completely vanished! (spot roll 11-7)

"Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'll be here all day!"
See if the tavern is open. If so, see if I can setup in the corner and preform.
The tavern is still closed, seeing as the tavern keeper has not yet returned.
Shortly after you check, though, the ambassador and his guards start filing out. They have their gear with them, so they probably have what they came for, and are leaving.
The ambassador looks quite disgruntled. He's looking around at everyone, particularly the adventures, with obvious suspicion. His eyes linger on Mic for a long moment.

After the dwarves comes the High Priest. He also glances around, but looks more nervous than suspicious.

Veneficus curses under his breath. He had missed his chance to do what he intended. He'd have to wait until he could speak with the priest.
Wait until the High Priest shows his face.
With the priest's face quite clearly showing, you stop waiting and head over to him.
