My gobboes find themselves sprawled around a broken-down wagon, surrounded by trees.
They waste no time in setting themselves to work. Even the trolls (!) cheerfully pitch in with the construction--
(https://i.imgur.com/dsBD6S6.png)
--and soon we have a rather nice wall poking into the sky, surrounded on all sides by the devastation wrought by my woodcutter.
Down below, I lay out designations in a haphazard sort of way, slapping down bedrooms with abandon. The miner digs well, and cramped hallways soon take shape.
Goblins sleep, right?
-----------------------------
The beak dogs are a rambunctious lot. They gambol about the forest, always underfoot. The trolls don't seem to mind, but the locals do not approve.
It's all in fun, of course. ...I think.
-----------------------------
(https://imgur.com/8E8tcbx.png)
As spring rolls into summer, the miner strikes a cavern.
I'm going to leave this open, I think. More interesting that way.
-----------------------------
The caravan arriveth!
And the outpost liaison is... an elf? Weird.
On the other hand, he's the goblinest elf I've ever seen. Elf tooth jewelry, troll fur garb... he's carrying a textbook for baby-snatchers, for crying out loud!
I approve. What'll I sell the merchants though? We just got here! There's no industry! No production! We've got naught but the clothes off our backs-- wait! The clothes off our backs!
We can sell those!
Meanwhile, the goblin-elf begins negotiations, and I learn that beakdogs are an importable good.
Once the import stuff's all sorted out, I move on to the trade proper. Our "gently used" clothwork nets us a few beakdogs, some meat for the trolls, and a couple helms.
Not bad. I'm a little dissappointed that nobody's trying to kill us yet, tho.
Oho! Migrants!
I tell everybody they are to do everything, and shove 'em all in the military for good measure. It'll be nice to have a few extra hands around here.
-----------------------------
Work on the aboveground fortifications continues. The keep isn't quite so imposing yet as I'd like, but it begins to take on a certain solidity nonetheless.
I'm not really sure yet what I intend to do with the surface world, but I want it to be messy. Lots of towers sprawled about, a few trenches here and there-- I might even start a few grassfires, to get that proper blot-on-the-landscape feel. I'd have to use magma, tho... is magma too dwarfy for goblins? Hm.
Maybe some forgotten beast'll show up with fire. That'd be nice.
-----------------------------
Some migrant with a crossbow is running around taking potshots at the local wildlife.
I'd tell him to stop, but we're gonna need a skilled marksgoblin someday. Also, this is kinda fun to watch.
-----------------------------
Gahh, cave croc!
I watch in delighted horror, expecting carnage untold. Somebody's nose goes flying, blood spatters the walls... then stops? What?
That's... that's messed up. The croc went snip-snip on my goblins' Achilles tendons, then... stopped. It's just standing there, crippling any goblin that tries to recover the wounded. I don't know whether to be nauseated or thrilled.
Well, I *did* bring some tetrahedrite to forge military gear with. Maybe the judicious application of COPPER SCIMITAR TO THE FACE will clear this one up.
A recruit flails about in the croc's general direction. The croc panics and waddles off.
That's probably best for all of us.
-----------------------------
(https://imgur.com/TpcKjUD.png)
Casualties are... kinda bad. Two goblins'll never walk without a crutch again. Another's lost the use of a hand. One unfortunate lost the use of a hand *and* a foot.
Well, I told myself I wanted Fun. And they're still alive, at least.
-----------------------------
As it turns out, goblins *do* sleep.
This will slow down construction and whatnot slightly, but at least the bedrooms are seeing use. I was starting to think I'd carved a bunch of holes in the wall for nothing.
-----------------------------
The cave croc decides to come back for more.
This time it bites on armor.
Amxu turns out to be a vicious little bloke. He's got a perfectly good scimitar, but he doesn't use it-- instead, he methodically pummels every square inch of the unfortunate crocodile's hide, beating it until it collapses to the ground in terrified exhaustion.
Amxu leaves, satisfied with the work of his hands.
Not long after, the croc leaves for good. I was kinda hoping to cage the thing, but... eh. Something else'll come along.
-----------------------------
As autumn rolls around, I take a moment to survey the work of my minions.
I'm rather happy with my little dent on the landscape.
Aha! We have a cave troll!
I... I don't know what to do with cave trolls. I've never really dabbled much in taming stuff. Maybe... maybe if I put the thing in an animal stockpile? That works, right?
Wait. Wait, it's tame already.
I... I didn't do anything. What just happened?
This is all very strange to me. I release the troll from custody.
-------------------------------
Yeahh, troll shearing is a go!
It suddenly occurs to me that a shorn troll must be a hideous sight to see... ah well. My minions can probably handle it.
-------------------------------
The goblin caravan arriveth once again.
I... still don't really have anything to trade these guys, but I scrounge up a few more bits of stray clothing and swap 'em for some limonite.
We're gonna have iron! Much better then this trashy copper stuff we've been turning out!
I'm pretty sure this caravan's gonna be coming every season. That'll help offset the lack of trade from other races, I guess.
-------------------------------
Some goblin poet petitions for residency.
We don't want no slackers around here! I send the blighter packing.
-------------------------------
Ahhahaha! More minions!
We are now 19 strong-- 22, if you count the trolls. I'm glad of the expanded labor pool; the work backlog was getting a bit cluttered. Things will get done much faster now.
-------------------------------
The game pauses, and a startling message presents itself before me.
It seems trolls breed like animals, but raise children like sapients. Strange, but kind of adorable-- and it'll do wonders for their stress levels!
I wonder what a troll baby looks like. Given that it has fully grown hair and tusks from birth, it's probably sort of like a little pom-pom with teeth sticking out. Cute... I think.
-------------------------------
Wait what?
Huh. I guess we didn't have any kids to steal, so the kidnapper improvised? The joke's on him, at any rate-- I was wondering how to get rid of these pets!
-------------------------------
Ber the psychopathic marksgoblin is at it again.
Stymied by his foe's unusual defenses, Ber elects to simply wait the pangolin out.
I may have to let the military handle this one. Ber shows no intention of moving anytime soon.
-------------------------------
After glaring at the pangolin for serveral days...
Ber panics, bashes it wish the crossbow, and runs away screaming.
...Oookay?
-------------------------------
Several weeks later, Ber finally manages to fell his enemy.
No, I don't know how he did it. Maybe he glared it to death?
Regardless, if this is the best he can do... well, I'm glad all we have to feed around here is trolls.
-------------------------------
Horrors! A monkey thing has made off with our garbage!
I was gonna sell that garbage! Bad monkey-thing! Bad!
...Ah well. We'll find other garbage to sell.
-------------------------------
The cage traps down in the caverns are turning up some undesirable side products.
Hmm. Low-thread hostile varmints, and somehow we've gotta dispose of them... ooh! I know just what to do with these!
We'll use 'em to stage arena pit fights!
Can I get gobbod ?
Give me the weakest goblin of all, and make me the book-keeper please.
Make me read / manage / do intellectual stuff. Don't make me fight. I don't like physical stuff :P
I shall be named Spriggy - the smartest gobbo
You shall be gobbo'd at the first possible oppurtunity, sirrah!
-----------------------------
(https://imgur.com/LPRYKHB.png)
Thief! Protect the hoar... the hoa... okay, protect the garbage. Meh. Doesn't have the same ring to it.
The entire fortress turns out to kill the interloper. Our garbage shall not be disturbed!
A swordsgoblin catches up...
...and splits the vermin's skull open. That settles that.
-----------------------------
Yay, the garbage collectors are here!
I'll sell them more garbage, I guess.
I'm getting a pretty steady trickle of iron from this. Very nice.
-----------------------------
I am suddenly reminded that the caverns are open.
The weaver insists on using only her fists to defend herself, and loses an eye for it.
I tell her to use her sword for cryin' out loud
(https://imgur.com/PqzhbN2.png)
and she soon resolves the situation via judicious application of blade-to-the-lungs. The trolls will eat well this month!
-----------------------------
The landscape is looking depressingly unravaged, and my minions need work. I give them an archery tower to build.
I'm thinking I'll just scatter a bunch of these things about the map at random, all different shapes and sizes. Throw a few trenches in there, and it oughta look pretty gobbish!
-----------------------------
A strange and noble figure approaches.
He seeks out the expedition leader, and requests residency.
Intrigued by his name and garb, I accept... I want to know more about this strange character.
Now this "Inale" has joined us, I can take a look at his life story. It would seem he's a former prisoner of war who's since risen somewhat in life. He has five kills to his name-- probably murders.
I like the cut of this elf's jib! His personality is a wee bit on the weak side, but perhaps we can someday make a warrior of him nonetheless. In the meantime, he plays his songs with us.
-----------------------------
Ber strikes again.
Hunting in the caverns seems to me a spectacularly bad idea. Ber disagrees. He's... totally gonna get himself killed down here sooner or later, but at least he's keeping the trolls well-fed.
-----------------------------
(https://imgur.com/VbrMU5Q.png)
Ber is a monster.
-----------------------------
The war trolls stumble on some unexpected guests.
Trolls do not like the unexpected.
More langurs approach. It's an invasion!
I order my minions to rectify the situation.
They do so with enthusiasm.
-----------------------------
A troll lurches its way towards the hospital, nursing a gash on its hand.
The injury is not serious, and it demonstrates that trolls will accept medical care. I am pleased.
-----------------------------
The archery tower stands tall and proud.
Lonesome Tileset (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=172625.0) handles fortifications in a lovely, soft sort of way. I don't often play around with crossbows, so this is the first time I've gotten to see that in Fortress mode. I'm very happy about it.
-----------------------------
(https://i.imgur.com/ooyfN4z.png)
It's been a slow sort of year, but I'm content with how it's gone. I'm fast learning the ropes of Gobbo Fortress, and I feel I'm now ready for whatever this world sees fit to throw at me!
...I just hope we survive.
Aight, hiatus over. Gob Fortress lives; let's have us some gobbings!
---------------------------------
(https://imgur.com/mOaBPjV.png)
"Nord" the expedition leader and militia commander stands tall and proud, axe in hand. His armor is of wondrous make, and his eyes gleam most cruelly.
---------------------------------
(https://imgur.com/qvF5srp.png)
Here we have "Hystys" the marksgoblin, who shoots animals for fun. He may not be ensconced in copper like his buddies, but his bone-carven crossbow bolts strike terror into the hearts of the local wildlife.
What a horrible, horrible person.
---------------------------
(https://imgur.com/pdzc0qq.png)
"Spriggy" has been carrying around a scimitar and hauling rock blocks like a good little goblin for awhile now, but he's sharper than your average troll toolshed--
(https://imgur.com/bxcUWvV.png)
--he knows the good little goblins get eaten by big bad monsters! None of that for him! Now he serves as the fortress bookkeeper, manager, and chief medical goblin, all at the same time. He doesn't know a thing about any of those occupations, but he'll learn quick-- and at any rate, it's safer than militia-work was.
---------------------------
And then there's "Whateveryouwant".
Whateveryouwant is... special.
The poor feller hobbles around on that little crutch of his, lugging rock blocks under 70 pounds of armor. What with the crutch and the armor, he spends most of his time just getting from place to place... which leaves him little time for actually learning stuff. He's no good at fighting, no good at making stuff, and not much good as a hauler. He is, in fact, absolutely useless in most every way... but somehow, he endures.
You can't help but admire him for that.
If I were to guess, Marksblin won't live a year with his attitude.
Speaking of attachment, does having a visual representation make it easier or harder?
Gahh, they're multiplying!
Gotta finish that arena. Gotta finish it soon.
I'll kill those troglodytes. I'll kill ALL those troglodytes.
----------------------------
Great, these jokers again.
No matter. This time, I know what to sell them.
We've been cranking out copperwork and ironwork like crazy, but our silver has remained untouched! Why not use it?
For this minor investment on our part, we obtain more ore, some weaponry, and a glut of beak dogs.
BEAK DOGS.
I know just what I'm gonna use these for, too.
----------------------------
Uh oh.
Everyone, kill it! Killit killit killit!
At this exact moment, I kid you not--
(https://imgur.com/Ui2oDun.png)
Migrants. Wonderful. Just... just stay out of our way, alright guys? Please?
----------------------------
The werelizard's strikes and bites do little against copper--
(https://imgur.com/QxXJGbo.png)
--so it tries something else.
----------------------------
One of our war trolls closes...
...a mistake. Now the werelizard has something worth sinking teeth into!
The troll falls back, terrified, and the were wheels on Nord the expedition-commander.
Nord fights back valiantly.
A war beak arrives, and the fight descends into a wild scrummage, blades flashing and jaws snapping.
The were bites on limb; its teeth find no purchase against the armor--
(https://imgur.com/yligQTE.png)
--and so it opens its jaws to an unnatural gape, clamping down upon Azstrog the fish cleaners's entire head! Azstrog's eyes widen in fear...
...and the were proceeds to shake him around like a rat terrier, tearing nerve and tendon apart. Azstrog collapses to the ground with ruined spine, paralyzed, doomed to death.
----------------------------
Nord brings his axe once again to bear, vengeance in his eyes.
His companions join him, and slowly but surely the were weakens.
Its strikes, once fearsome, are now half-hearted
(https://imgur.com/Yx2n0eX.png)
and an enterprising swordsgoblin closes to deal one final blow.
Utes the werelizard is dead of bloodloss before it hits the ground. It has mortally wounded one, crippled a second, and infected two further in its rampage.
A battle indeed! I should be able to post the ensuing cleanup in a bit; it's all played and written already. In the meantime, here's that elf description you wanted:
* Spriggy has been restless recently *
The other day, there was a fight in the dark pits.
Many of his brothers were hurt.
Ngokang got sick. She felt something changed in her body. Scales have appeared here and there in her skin.
Nord, our leader, has decided to entomb her in a rock cell...
"This is not a satisfactory way to treat such a fighter." Spriggy thinks.
Ngokang fought for the dark fort, she should not be kept in prison...
"As the manager, I must find a way to make her happy ! And as CMG, I must treat her sickness !"
* Spriggy uses his brain *
It hurts !
...
But, eventually an idea emerges !
The idea is simple. Ngokang must be kept in a room, like it is now.
But not trapped in 4 walls. Instead, build a statue to trap her in.
On the other side of the statue, leave an access to the troglodites stockpile.
When Ngokang's sickness reveals, she will break the statue and attack the troglos.
Eventualy spreading the infection, so the troglo problem solves by itself !
There are two scenarii :
- Ngokang dies in battle. Glorious battle. Her honor is safe and what not.
-> It might be possible she infected some troglo in the process.
-> We now have an expanding !!FUN!! were-troglodite problem army
- Ngokang kills the troglos. Troglodite problem solved !
OOOOO OOOOO
O OOOO t t O
O Ñ Ω t t O
O OOOO t t O
OOOOO OOOOO
O=walls
Ω = statue
Ñ = Ngokang
Spriggy runs in the fort, seeking the leader Nord. He must agree with her ! This plan is flawless !
@OP : Is the "fortress" opened ? Like no doors / no bridges ? The only way against ennemies is to fight right ?
Oh jeez, looks like we're rping then. I feel obligated with such a targeted comment at me! Time to walk the fine line between making choices with regards to other people's comments and not forcing super to abide to my will!
nords combat notes pg 1
these notes will hold major conflicts and the events around them to help solve problems like them in the future and remember who died
conflict 1 - werebeast attack
- all units sent to fight beast. poorly trained or unarmored units should not be sent next time. see if smiths can armor trolls and yell at recruits to train harder.
- infected locked away or killed. it went smoothly. no important deaths or infections.
- manager didn't like letting infected recruit rot for some reason. said something about honor and morals or whatever. he wants to release her on troglodytes. seems complicated and risky. its his project if he wants it that bad but its his death if he fails which might stop him. in the future try to prevent this kind of thing somehow. manager is too useful to kill even if annoying.
END conflict 1
Nord, expedition leader: I talked to Spriggy recently. I am annoyed.
