Title: DOUBLEKING [Wrapping Up]
Post by: piecewise on June 13, 2019, 08:55:18 pm
DOUBLEKING

WELCOME this is a test game for a stupid ass system called DOUBLEKING based on the animation of the same name (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_MSFkZHNi4). This test is gonna be a simple TOURNAMENT of one on one fights moving towards an ultimate victor, the KING OF KINGS. Here's how this shit works.

First, we're using expanded RTD. You know that thing I use a lot where its just normal RTD but as you level up you get bigger dice so that "5" range increases.  When you're doing something that isn't opposed by a player, its just normal RTD rules. If you're opposed or opposing, then its whoever rolls highest, with greater differences in rolls meaning greater success/failure.

Second, You are a King. Kings have Crowns. Crowns have POWER. Each Crown has abilities connected to it, which you can use as long as you're wearing the Crown.  Whats more, you can stack crowns, allowing you to use the power of both, either individually or in combination! When you kill another king, you can take their Crown!

Finally, each turn you can move and take an action. Actions are basically anything you can do in a few seconds.

Spoiler: Character Creation (click to show/hide)

I need 8 people. We're doing one fight at a time, so feel free to just leave a sheet and I'll pm you when its your turn.

Crown of Hunger (Allows the user to eat anything and to then duplicate what they ate, including living things)

It looks like a big pair of dentures on your head, like with all the teeth pointed up like the points on a crown and the gums as the base.

Crown of Space (Allows manipulation of Physical space). Looks like a  normal crown, but no matter how much you move towards or away from it, or where you go in relation to it, its always facing you and always the same size.

Crown number 42, please

Spoiler: Sheet (click to show/hide)
Crown of Strength (Enables the user to enhance their physical capacities). Appears to be made of braided together flexing arms.

Crown 50 please.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Crown of Adaption (User can take on the qualities of anything they are touching). Currently looks like its made of hair, since its on your head.

6 down, 2 to go. The match ups will be selected randomly. First match will be on a nice final destination/dragon ball z like arena. However, each round after that will have its arena selected by the loser of the last match. So that will be fun.

Thanks ER for that suggestion.

Killer Queen clears his throat. Yes, HE is a Queen. No questioning it.
"My crown is that of Gases. Though you are about to commence with pre-mortem necromancy, I say... I have the greater crown."

Give my opponent a lethal case of the Bends, without all the diving, by bringing the various gases in his blood out of solution.

(Who is he quoting?)
[4][1]
[3][6]
Jake, on the right side of the arena, waves his scepter in a kingly fashion and a throne of bones bursts from the ground behind him. Well..its less a throne and more like a barstool of bone due to a rather anemic amount of osseous materials. Jake sits down atop his budget throne and attempts to appear as regal as possible.

[4][5][1]
Killer Queen....makes an indecipherable face and an immaculate pose before pointing at Jake. For a moment Jake doesn't seem to understand and just looks around. Then he starts to groan, twitch, and finally seize.  Bloody foam flows out of his mouth and eyes before he eventually slumps over after his aorta pops with a dull thud.

Well that was fast.  Killer Queen picks the crown of bone up off of Jake's corpse.

Jakey, what will our next stage be?

Oh and Dev and Coolrune are up!

Spoiler: Stats (click to show/hide)
We're gonna assume this is a large square room, with a catwalk going across it and the actual reactor and pool beneath it. Something like This. (https://c8.alamy.com/comp/DGXC78/interior-view-neckarwestheim-nuclear-power-station-neckarwestheim-DGXC78.jpg)

[3][1]
[4][2][4v1,4]
Jeremiah channels the power of his crown into his body but lacks the control to properly distribute it, resulting in an all over but relatively minor increase of muscle. Regardless, he picks up his shot put and hucks it at Dev. It hits Dev right in the chest and boy does it hurt. Maybe it cracks a rib? Hard to tell. What it doesn't do is cannon ball straight through his sternum like Jeremiah probably wanted.

[5][3][3,3]
Dev, staggered back and holding his chest, points at the section of catwalk under Jeremiah's feet an jerks his hand to the side. The catwalk, which had been straight, suddenly takes on slight horseshoe like bend, so that Jeremiah is now standing on empty space. Jeremiah flails as he starts to fall, hands catching the edge of the catwalk for an instant but unable to keep hold. He falls the 20 or so feet down into the reactor pool and...immediately bobs back up, apparently unharmed.

Turns out falling into a reactor pool isn't deadly or even very harmful so long as you don't then swim 60 or so feet down and start rubbing yourself against the reactor head.

Still, he is now wet, which is a moral victory.

[2][2]
[1][4,5][9]

Dev leans over the railing of the catwalk and points down at the pool before jerking his hand upward. The 60 foot pool suddenly becomes a 6 foot pool as the length between the top and bottom of the pool contorts impossibly.  However, the shallow pool lets Jeremiah make his movement to the ladder out of it quickly and in second he's climbed back up to catwalk level. Hard to tell how much radiation he's taken, but its clearly not enough to kill him outright or induce any instantaneous symptoms.

[7v5][4]
Jeremiah, looking something like a wet dog in that fur,  lashes out at Dev in a more traditional way by stabbing at him. The blow doesn't find any immediately vital areas but Dev's attempt to dodge back from it results in a deep stab to his thigh that hobbles him.

Dev snaps his fingers and seems to vanish with a odd shimmer as he manipulates the physical space he occupies. He reappears behind Jeremiah and attempts to bring his Adze down on Jeremiah's head. Jeremiah, apparently anticipating the attack, dodges forwards away from the blow and immediately spins to face Dev with an attack of his own. Jeremiah's attempt to channel the power of his crown is lackluster at best, but  it doesn't much matter: he turns the momentum of his movement into a spinning slash that catches Dev right at neck level and cleaves straight through both arms and neck, chopping all three appendages off in a single blow.

Jeremiah secures the crown before it can roll off into the reactor.

The pres starts to do some sort of snarl or something but immediately bites his tongue and swears repeatedly as he accidentally swallows it. This is dangerous as another failure like that might end with him swallowing his own head.  Nix squeezes the diamond in his fist and patches of his flesh turn into glittering, cut diamond, including about half his head. Thus modified he sprints directly at the president and the two of them clash, hands interwoven, struggling to push the other back in a very anime-esque way.

Nix manages to get the upper hand, slips behind Pres and proceeds to suplex him straight into a trashcan.  The two hang there for a second, holding the pose, before Pres suddenly squirms out of Nix's grasp, lands on all fours, and leaps forward as his mouth expands to frightening size. Nix puts out his arms to block and Pres swallows the right arm straight up to the elbow before his teeth clamp down like a beartrap. He can't bite the arm off but he gets a dangerous tight hold on it while he presses his palm into Nix's face and starts trying to shove the other man away while gnawing on the arm.

That done he rolls backwards away from Whoever the heck that guy is, ejecting armed smoke grenades from his body as he does. Several come out as duds but  more than enough are fully formed and the alley almost instantly fills with so much smoke that not only seeing near impossible, breathing is quite troublesome as well. Pres, taking advantage of the moment, swallows his machine pistol and attempts to reform two of them, one in each hand. However, what comes out are only vaguely gun shaped lumps of metal.  However, that other guy is so blinded by the smoke that he can't even attempt a counter attack.

He squeezes both triggers and screams manically as he unleashes a mad spray of bullets down the length of the alley. Nix comes flying straight through the hail of bullets, jumping into melee range and grabbing Pres by the collar. He whips his head back and then brings it down onto the Pres' head, diamond side first. The blow knocks the Pres' crown right off and pulps his already damaged skull.

Nix, still coughing, retrieves the crown.

He retrieves the crown from the salsa like mess.

Jeremiah points at Killer Queen and shouts "GET OVER HERE!" at the same time Killer Queen doubles over backwards and points at Jeremiah over its shoulder.  The space between the two of them seems to fold in on itself and instead of 15 feet away they're now 10 feet apart.  Jeremiah swings his sword though empty air, attempting to complete a combo that never got started. He staggers and then twitches and groans out a very high pitched groan. His bones hurt.

The fleshy wall of the strangely well illuminated intestine they're both occupying suddenly bursts and a giant 7 headed tapeworm hydra comes surging out with a chorus of shrieks.
[5,3 and 2]
Jeremiah dodges back out of the way of a snapping pseudomouth, but one of the other heads gets its oriface around Killer Queen's foot and yanks Her...him? It?  Into the air, dangling them around upside down.

Jeremiah attempts to use his strength crown to empower his legs, then leaps at the immobilized Killer Queen, screaming ferociously, and swings his sword at her/him/it. Even if the sword misses, he uses his crown of space to manipulate it so that it strikes true.

Surely this beast has bones. If so, control the tapeworm's skeleton and have the other heads devour my opponent! If not, simply make it pop from gas in its guts, sending me flying in some unpredictable direction to avoid my foe's attack.
Tapeworms actually don’t have bones. Tapeworms are flatworms. They also don’t have digestive systems either

Killer queen, able to do all sorts of cool poses like this, points at the worm. A moment later the worm belches loudly and drops Killer queen straight to the ground.  Jeremiah, seeing his moment, attempts to leap straight to Killer Queen and strike it with a space warping blow. However this attempt results in him hopping a few inches off the ground and then swinging his sword in mid air like a great big fanny.

[6,2]
The worm hydra again strikes, again misses the slippery Jeremiah, and AGAIN grabs Killer queen and lifts him into the air, effectively invalidating the entire struggle!

With the situation being much the exact same as before, Jeremiah sees no reason to not do basically the exact same thing. After all, if something doesn't work once, then it's insanity to not do it again, right?

Killer Queen grows an exoskeleton. Unfortunately, due to a lack of royal potency, this exoskeleton is made using Killer queen's endoskeleton. Killer Queen surprisingly survives this, though the visuals and sounds of someone's skeleton being forced from their inside to their outside is something quite horrific. Sort of like the sound of jello being squeezed through a drain.  Regardless, blood and shrieking, killer queen then points at the worm beast and it detonates like a parasitic hand grenade. Killer queen flops to the ground and gets back up.  Jeremiah attempts another leap forward but  his lack of potency instead results in him massively cramping up and effectively temporarily paralyzing both legs as he tries to exert far more power than normal.  From the ground he takes a swipe at Killer queen with his sword, bending space so that that the strike appears within range of Killer queen. Killer queen slaps the attack away.

I remember learning somewhere that some crustaceans, in addition to their exoskeleton, have cartilage for support as well, but this cartilage is different than the cartilage we have. Crabs use it to keep their legs attached to the body. (I mention this since cartilage is a precursor to bone in vertebrates)

Sunny shakes herself out of it as Nix swings another blow down at her and raises her own hand to intercept. A stream of black-purple bird shapes erupts from her palm; none of the birds hold their form for more than a moment, fragmenting and vanishing only a couple of feet  from their origin, but the gravitonic force behind them is still overwhelming. Nix, caught in the stream, grinds to a halt and for a few moments he struggles against it, fist quivering with exertion as he tries to brute force his way through and into Sunny's non-face. Then, all at once, it overpowers him and he goes flying up and back, blown away. He flips mid air and lands against the far windows in a crouch, perched momentarily against the vertical glass wall. The glass cracks under his feet.

Nix, his flesh reverting to normal meat...if not slightly more fragile...leaps off the wall towards Sunny. Sunny, in a panic and still not quite sober from the head trauma (Hand trauma?) unleashes an single massive gravitonic raven.  This creature, with a 10 foot wingspan and a body like shining anti-light, tears out from her extended hand  and flies forward heedless of the room around it. The ephemeral creature's gravity attempts  to drag everything in the room along with it as it smashes through the windows on the far wall and sails out into open air.  Nix, halfway between the wall and Sunny, catches the conference table in a bear hug and keeps a grip on it as the table reels back and wedges itself between the floor and ceiling. Sunny, with nothing to hold on to, is dragged off the ground and out the window, finding herself orbiting rapidly around the crow- along with two dozen office chairs and a mixture of random office supplies- above the dizzying height of a 38 floor drop. The crow gets about 30 feet from the building and begins to dissipate.

Title: Re: DOUBLEKING

Fug.

The arena is massive flat plane that extends out infinitely to the horizon. The plane is divided into two expanses that are fulled with items and structures that relate to each of the crowns the Quad Kings are wearing. Nix's side is covered in jutting spikes made out of rare metals, animated slabs of meat that take the form of animals, trees filled with flocks of birds, and a number of gravitational anomalies. Killer Queen's side is fulled geysers that spew out random gases, the near skeletal remains of a variety of animals, massive melee weapons such as greatswords, axes, and clubs, and MC Esher style architecture.

Both Kings start off in thrones that resemble their crowns. A throne of pale yellow gas for Killer Queen, and a throne that swaps between several different material for Nix.

Nix takes off at a dead sprint towards Killer queen who I assume is a good distance away in the giant mix of stuff on his side.  Nix is halfway in, running up a set of upside down stairs, when he sees killer queen fly by more than 100 feet overhead.  Killer queen has a bubble of air around its head. Alright. Now the issue is that it also has no bones. At all. Its just a sack of wet red meat whipping through the air like a windsock. It would probably be screaming if it had ribs left to allow it to do so. All Nix can currently hear is a sound like donald duck having a seizure in a kiddie pool filled with jello. Killer Queen's legs are flapping wildly and with each flap it seems to jump cut or vanish for a fraction of a second before reappearing a good distance away. Killer queen is just teleporting randomly around, pinballing in all directions. It is a horrible sight to see and also very funny.

Nix attempts to pull Killer queen in towards him, but the erratic teleportations and his own lack of kingly power mean that all he can do is drag the rapidly teleporting body down in his direction, bringing it from 100 feet to more like 75.  Meanwhile Killer queen does seem to stiffen up slightly. However he seems to do so because he grows completely random bones in completely random parts of his body. Nix can see Killer queen's head swell massively as a ribcage replaces the void left by his now vanished skull. Despite this extremely unpleasant boning, Killer queen is still alive. At this point its questionable if thats a good thing or not.

Nix kneels down so that he can actually punch the writhing body of Killer Queen and swings a hammer blow down at its face. And then killer queen does something unexpected. Despite its horribly malformed body it manages to jerk its head hard to one side, so that the blow only grazes its rib enforced cheek.  And at that moment, it activates the power of its own crown. There is a burst of steam and blood laced electrical discharge that obscures the two combatants. And then from the steam rises Killer Queen his body is still badly damaged, still basically lacking any skin, but he is standing. The steam clears to reveal Nix at his feet, a puddle of soft with erratic studs of bone jammed apparently randomly throughout.  Killer queen staggers a bit, then stands up straight and poses.

Let's not fall for theatrics.
Take the Mine and drop it onto my blobby opponent. Walk away as it takes a moment to prime, then make one last victory pose...

As blood and bone studs fly.
[4v4]
[6,1v2,4]
Whether by accident or suicidal intent, as Killer queen arms his mine and moves to drop it Nix unleashes a powerful but undirected burst of gravity that spreads outwards from himself in a burst.  Both are smashed to the ground by the expanding blast, but after it passes Killer Queen struggles up onto his feet while Nix remains on the ground, pulverized by his own final act.

KILLER QUEEN HAS WON!

Alright. So. Lets get some feedback from players. Any thoughts on the mechanics here? Things you think need changing, things you liked, etc.

I know I wasn’t able to play, but I’ve seen greatness here, I can’t think of anything that needs changing

This was certainley an interesting idea, and it certainly has really catchy mechanics. The only thing I'm curious is about how many players you have in mind for DOUBLEKING. 8 users was fine as a test, but do you have a limit in mind? For the last two, having an excess of powers might be overwhelming

Aside from that, it looks really cool.

I enjoyed it. Even when it wasn't my turn, the theorycrafting on what crowns I could get, what crowns my opponent will get, how to best utilized and combine crown powers in order to counter what my opponent could throw at me was a lot of fun. I have some minor niggles, but these are more like observations than complaints, and I'm pretty sure the exploration part of the round will rectify it.

CROWNS: I don't think it would be unreasonable to say that not all crowns are made equally. Even without the lucky dice roll on my first match, gravity vs. bird isn't exactly a fair match up, gravity has both far more direct damage potential, area of control, and defensive capabilities than being able to summon and control birds. This can be pretty easily balance by placing the more powerful and versatile crowns in harder to reach places in the Mad Castle. The power of crowns also segways into my next niggle...

CROWN STATS: After Kit performed the bone reversal that won them the match, I noticed a way for NRDL to potentially recover and nullify the effects of the crown of bones and suffocation on himself via a wombo combo utilizing all of his crowns. But when I checked his stats, I saw he had a d4 for control meaning it would be practically impossible for the combo to actually succeed since it requires high precision. And for a game where the idea is to stack up and combine different powers to get new and creative effects, having the option to kneecap that possible creative ability in exchange for a physical stat boost seems... wonky. Especially considering that most crown effects work off of potency and are generally more effective than just using regular weapons. It's a match-up between sword and gun vs. pillar of gravity and giving someone the bends so hard their heart explodes, and I'll say the latter two are both more likely to win, and be more interesting to watch as well.

You could have each crown have a specific potency and control instead, as a way of correcting the previous problem as well as balancing the more versatile crowns and giving more use to the less useful ones. So the crown of birds for example can have something like D6 potency and D8 control, in order to balance out the more limited use, while something like the crown of gravity could get something like D10 power but D4 control. More power, but in a uncontrollable matter. This runs into the issue of needing to apply power levels to all the crowns, and I know you got like, 50 of them, but I think it would be a good way to balance out the game.

Well, that or just have control and potency permanently be d6, since that's the simplest way of ensuring all crown abilities stay useful for the rest of the game.

I'm curious, if I had chosen to do a physical attack, like try to stand up and rush Kit despite having my bones melted, would that have resulted in extreme penalties to the roll, or would you have just straight vetoed it?

I started to realise just how poorly optimised my character was for endgame fights, with multiple crowns potentially working. So my first roll always ended up being trying to bumrush people.

Mechanically there are some ideas I'd like to float past you guys.

1. Dex split into speed and dex, to make dex and ranged attacks disconnected from going first

2. In the current version of the game we have two magic stats, potency and control. Instead of handling it like that I thought it might be better to instead keep potency but instead of control to instead use the other stats in its place. So if you're shooting something it would be potency and Dex or potency and will to create and control summoned creatures. It would basically still work the same but it would make your stats and your magic connected as opposed to completely disconnected.

3. To make it at least clear how rolls are handled with mixing vs stacking powers. Ie if you mix the powers of two or more crowns its a single roll, but if you use one, then another, then another in sequence, that's 3 rolls.
