Title: ANNOUNCEMENT: West Coast Dwarf Fortress 2011 Meetup! FINAL PLANS! (Hopefully)
Post by: Rainseeker on April 12, 2011, 07:40:03 pm
EDITED on 7/7/11

WCDF 2011 Meetup is July 16!  See below for detailed schedule!

July 15 we are encouraging people to go camping at either Whiskeytown Lake or Lake Shasta, both about half an hour from Redding.

We really hope people can come!  Let us know soon so we can plan appropriately.

Tarn is going to be there!  For those of you who want to meet him, this is your opportunity!

!!!PLANS!!!

July 16

9:00 Tour of Lake Shasta Caverns (Non-mandatory, but ToadyOne, ThreeToe, Capntastic and Rainseeker will be there.)  2 hour tour costs $22, but is really cool.  Be there on time or you'll get left behind!
Location Website:  http://lakeshastacaverns.com/ (http://lakeshastacaverns.com/)

EDIT:  Be sure to buy a ticket for the 9:30 tour!

12:30 Meet at Marie Callender's, have lunch, listen to Tarn, kibitz afterwards until about 4:30 when we get kicked out.
Location Website:  Marie Callender's (http://maps.google.com/maps/place?rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS385US385&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=marie+callender's+redding&fb=1&gl=us&hq=marie+callender's&hnear=0x54d291d63b4a202f:0x1f3358ec7b360f57,Redding,+CA&cid=6732844844855689236)

Huh. Well I don't normally do these meetup things but this is close enough that I suppose I may as well swing by.
If the park you're thinking of is the one I'm thinking of, then it's a nice enough place to hang out. Overgrown enough that it's almost wild, but not quite. Pretty big. Only issue I can think of is that the restrooms are, as far as I know, not intended to be used and always locked. There's plenty of secluded trees, though, so for a bunch of gentlemen of dorfy persuasion it's entirely probable that no problem will arise.
Shasta caverns (I'm assuming that's the caves you mean, there's no others of significance particularly near Redding as far as I'm aware) are nice enough for folks who haven't seen northwestern caves before. But at a meetup in the northwest, I don't reckon there's too many people to whom that applies. It's not as impressive as some of the other caves around.
I don't know where you're thinking of camping, so I can't comment on that.

I agree with this sentiment, someone needs to be streaming this! I'm all the way on the east coast but would have gone otherwise.

I'd certainly go if I had the time and money. Lacking either, I can only echo the sentiment of the above posters. Stream that.

Yea, why don't we have this in the middle of the country instead?

It IS the middle of the country. 1095km to Tijuana, 1149km to Surrey BC.

I know, I know, you meant middle as in east-west, not north-south.

To be substantive for a moment, I am northern Californian and somewhat interested. (Three hour drive one-way, or you'd have to pick me up at the train station at 3:14AM, and drop me off the next day at 2:21AM.)

Redding?  The meetup is going to be in Redding, of all places?

If only I had a car, a driver's license, and the spare time to visit.  (Redding, seriously?  The only reason I know that town is because my mother went to High School there.)

I live in Australia.

Anyone going to build a superior drawbridge from here to there?

What? No!?

Damn you...

Well, even if I could go, it would be too hard to explain to my mum. And I would probably say something like "Bye mum! I'm going into the back of a cave with a bunch of men 3 times my age! See you in a few hours!"

Unfortunately you can't build a bridge across regions like that without some major cheating or the future ability to build floors in adventure mode. Perhaps next year?

Redding?  The meetup is going to be in Redding, of all places?

Yeah, we knew that would be a question.  The main reason is that I'm planning it, and this is where I'm from.  It's in the middle of the state, so I was hoping it could be a middle ground.  And just to let everyone know, there's an airport here, but we're aware many people won't be able to afford the tickets.

Our main goal at this point is to see how many people can come.

I'm in Oakland, so depending on the date, I'd be interesting in coming. I don't have a car, so I'd probably end up taking a bus, or if anyone else from the SF Bay Area is going, maybe I'd be able to ride with them. I can also take the same train as Knaveofstaves mentioned, with the same issue of arriving at 3:00 in the morning, and having to leave at 2:00am.

I logged in just to say maybe. I know there's a few of us in the bay and we could all carpool - or perhaps move it to the SF bay area or any metropolitan area where there's generally good public transport here/there from across CA and out-of-state.

fuck yeah, I missed the last couple in WA because they just didnt work with my schedule, but Reding is only a couple hours and I could definitly make it.  I only have a couple scheduled events in those months, so unless it falls on June 10 or July 22-24 I'm totally there.

Lets lock in a date as soon as possible, to make planning easier for everyone.

A bay-area carpool could totally be feasable.  If I drag the Mrs along, we'd probably rent a car and could pick someone up if travel schedules line up.  Otherwise, I'd probably come on two wheels.

I'm guessing you picked Redding due to its proximity to Lassen Volcanic?  I always wanted to check that place out.

I am gonna pop in and agree that the Bay would be legit just cause it suits my interest,
but Redding seems legit, I just have to weigh if a 7 hour car trip is worth it(it is).
It depends I guess, what it entails. Camping may be a good idea so people don't have to poor more money on lodging, and we can all sit around the wagon and drink.

Just put all your points in Endurance at char gen, you'll be fine.

Or pick Merchant as a starting scenario, and take a plane. You can also achieve this result by picking up rocks and selling them at your local market, but be careful since this can lead to rapid inflation in your local economy.

Depending on my financial situation, the dates, and my willingness to do a 10ish hour drive, I may go. Wouldn't be a bad trip.

EDIT:
...Wow. It's over twice as much for a round trip ticket than it is to drive. And that's even assuming gas winds up at $4/gallon.

For some reason, having a large group of Dorf fortress players in one location seems like the apocalypse waiting to happen, probably involving a giant burning elf, and ending with the world spiraling out of control into a writhing pit of grief stricken government officials and babies with broken brains and missing bodies.

I'd be there if I could.  :D

My two best friends in the navy were both from... Redding.  It was kinda weird.  They never met each other, had no reason to know each other.  Life can be weird.

I'd be there for sure, if cross-country plane tickets were absolutely free.

Well people in the SF Bay suggested making a carpool
If we get a GD thread going about carpools going. If people don't have objections to taking someone who is a complete stranger united only by ascii dwarfs to a remote part of the woods this seems like the ideal situation.
Alternatively If you live along the California coast line  I think there maybe some major rail lines that will get you to Redding

Hopefully I will go, but first I need to become gainfully employed again AND convince my mom that she really wants to let me drive her nice car to the middle of california being that it gets over 20MPG and my truck gets about 9.....And...Devling type dude that wants it in portland, I live in washougal so I'll try to keep you updated on my plans, since if I go it would cost around 150$ in gas and I'd happily give you a ride there (and back!)...if I go that is...

that settles it, out of two equal choices being bay area and boulder, colorado,

Bay area is the superior option.

Angle, whereabouts?

I've got a court case at the end of June, but if I win I am going to go to the meetup. I live in Colorado Springs, we could probably get together and go if it all works out... Though I imagine the meetup would have to be mid July for that to work.

I'm near boulder, but convincing my parents to let me ride of with some people from the Internet might be difficult.
It's getting unnerving.

There's actually at least 4 people I know who live in the state who play Dwarf Fortress, and all live along the front range.

We really should consider some kind of carpool, us Colorado People. Show the other 49 states and the other 194 (195?) countries in the world what for!

(Edit: We should try for seven. I know a good embark location. Angel, you are in charge of the Dwarven Wine, I'll bring a pair of cats, FallingWhale, you bring the anvil!)

Also, I can come in June or July, but there was no option for that.
Also, tour of old gold mine = totally sweet

Hey, I stummbled across this while looking at http://www.mandible.net/2011/04/25/roguelikes-the-misnamed-genre/

Being that I am local I would like to point out a few things:

It will be hot in July.  Last year it only got to 115, I have seen 118.  It will be over 90 from 9am to 9pm.  Staying on the valley floor is a bad idea, camp in the mountains, or at least by the river.  The river is cold enough to cause hypothermia even in the summer.  People have died trying to swim across it.  Also, downtown Redding is kinda sketchy, don't get a hotel there.

There is a real cave called Samwell Cave somewhere north or west of the city.  You get the key from the Forest Service and have to hike a half mile or so to get to it.  Cost is minimal.  You need flashlights and helmets(bicycle helmets work).

Chico is a college town, has a cool downtown with a gaming store and "Nerd Bar" that would host you.  There is also Bidwell park, which is huge and has a large swimming creek running through it.  Chico also has more trees and will be 7-10 degrees cooler.  Chico also has better public transit.  In my personal opinion, Chico is a much nicer town in every way, and Redding is kinda a bland McCity.

Lastly, Greyhound and the Amtrak bus go to both towns.  If Greyhound scares you, take Amtrak, it is a few bucks more and much nicer.

Good luck squeezing money out of people.
Looks like about $300/ea for round-trip tickets from the west coast. About another $250 for a two-night hotel, for $850.  That would be 45 people at $20 each, and at that size, we'd need a conference room. That's not gonna work.

But Boston is so convenient for me. Maybe PAX East 2012? April 7-9?

Based on 'easy to get to from KBOS via T'. It probably varies widely by season, too. And the airfare probably could be  cheaper. Just not to the point that normal people we could reasonably cover it along with our own costs.

Unofficially I will now encourage you to go camping the night before at either Whiskeytown Lake or Lake Shasta, which are both 30 minutes from Redding, and hang out with other DF community members.  I will leave it to the community to organize that.

Plans are still being organized, so I will let you guys know about the planned schedule on July 16 soon.

If you have already voted please re-vote for July if you are able to come, so we can get a solid attendance number!

Well, I not having access to the family car for the time it would take me to get down there, and not really having money for gas anyway, I think I'm left with the option of either walking or biking. However, biking would take about 4 days of actual bike-time, along some very questionable roads. Walking, not counting sleeping, would take 12 days, so I'm pretty sure I couldn't make it that way.
Hopefully, I'll make it to the next one. :)

Okay, for the people who are coming, I'd like to setup some sort of group hotel rate.  I'd be happy to make a couple calls to get it to happen.  Here are my considerations:

- I don't want to step on the toes of those organizing the camping trip for the night before.  Who is organizing that and what are the details?

- Related to above, are there more than 5 rooms worth of people looking for a hotel on the night before?  Are most people thinking of spending the night after the meetup?

- It seems to me from the some of the posts i've read, that some of the attendees will be looking for the cheapest rates in town.  Personally I'd prefer to stay somewhere that is well reviewed, maintained, and reasonably priced.  I don't think we'll really break the bank anywhere in Redding, but some of us might be watching every dollar.  Thus, do we have enough people that can agree on the kind of place they want to stay, and still make a 5 room minimum?

We can take it to another thread if we need to, or a group PM chat, or whatever.  pipe up, chime in, opine.

I plan on coming and I'll, ideally, be bringing a friend, but I dunno if I want to camp as well.

...That said, looking around, I can't seem to find any hotel that's charging less than $100 a night, so I'd definitely be interested if you can swing a group rate. Else I may just settle on a hotel a half-hour, hour drive away for cheaper.
Title: Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: West Coast Dwarf Fortress 2011 Meetup!
Post by: puke on May 15, 2011, 01:44:57 am
Really?  Expedia lists a one night stay at the Howard Johnson at $55, and HotelGuides puts the Shasta Lodge at $40.5.  the reviews dont make either one of those places sound super attractive.  Like I'd rather B.O.F., which brings back the camping question and wither we should be looking at a one-night or two-night reservation.

Anyway, from what I can tell about the local hotels, I think its at least worth shooting for a Holiday Inn or something, and that is more in the price range you are describing.  If I'm alone on the desire for a nicer place (and we're not talking about a Sofitel here), then I'd still be happy to help get a headcount together and coordinate people who might want to get a group rate somewhere -- even if I dont end up being in on it.

The general rule of thumb is that if you're booking five or more rooms, you can usually get somewhere between 5 and 20% off.  Sometimes it's just a no-obligation discount that is available for the asking if you register a group name, other times the organizer is liable for the difference if enough rooms are not filled.  Depends on the hotel and what is negotiated.  So we need some people to commit to the dates, price range, and kind of place they're willing to stay in.  And, I'm going to be blunt here, I'm not going to be left holding the line if it turns out that everyone flakes.  this might limit the quality of the discount we can secure.

Ok, yeah, my "looking around" was looking for hotels in Redding on google maps and picking the ones that had better than a two or three star rating, so that explains the price difference.

Actually looking more thoroughly, there's a Super 8 that seems to run ya about $60/night in the southern part of Redding, and there's a bunch of cheap hotels in Cottonwood, about 20 miles south. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do, yet... The closest hotels actually on the way from Boise, where I live, are in Burney, which is still an hours drive out of Redding.

Super 8 (http://www.super8.com/Super8/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=03267&cid=carat_search-Super_8)

All the reviews list it as a decent, typical, budget motel. Which is really all I'm looking for.

Why get a hotel if camping another night's an option? Even if it's not, I personally would rather just spend the night in my car and save some money (although personally I should be able to just drive home, living relatively close) and even though I'm sure plenty of people prefer a bit more luxury than that, it's a totally viable option.
Title: Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: West Coast Dwarf Fortress 2011 Meetup!
Post by: puke on May 15, 2011, 10:15:05 am
exactly why i'm asking.  different people are going to have different preferences, and we need some sort of headcount to determine if it is worth doing.

Rainseeker has suggested that the meetup will likely be at a local restaurant, and if it runs into the evening people might not want to drive back out to a camp site, especially if they've had a little to drink.  Ideally, I'd want to try to pick a hotel that is walkabe from wherever the main venue is, but I dont think that is nailed down yet.

But we can at least start with a headcount of who is interested in what kind of accomodations.  I'd like to help as many people as possible find comfortable and affordable accomodations, and if more of us are in one place then there are options for room sharing and things like that.

I might be willing to pitch in, maybe for alcohol too for those old enough. I would challenge all you motherfuckers to drink-n-drive mariokart DS edition. It would be great of we can get 10+ guys to crash a hotel. We could chip in less than $10 and all fit into a room.

I will also be willing to host a carpool up from the bay. I will figure things out as the time gets closer.

I'm from Eureka and my family camps at Whiskeytown every year. It's a great place and the water is way cleaner than Shasta, not to mention colder which is awesome when the temperature outside pushes 100 all the time. Oakbottom is nice, but there is another campground that's around the back side of the lake that's quieter. The college kids tend to crash Oakbottom just an FYI but it's a great campground. Clean bathrooms, well kept.

I'd really like to come to one of these. Not really up for a 2100+ mile road trip though, nor do I have the spare cash to spend $600 on plane tickets.

Oh well. Have fun everyone. Maybe one day one of these meetups will coincide with me taking a business trip to Cali or something :D

Unless there's some obsidian and native gold lying around, I don't think I can spare time from my work schedule to adventure my way to the west cost.  Slaying elves along the way, though -- i have to admit -- does sound like fun.

If I had a bus I'd be bringing a busload.

As it stands, it is looking like my funding is not going to be sufficient to assist financially with the Colorado Caravan. I'll still go if there is space in there for me, but right now I'm not sure we'll get that off the ground. We'll see though. Still got a month-ish, and I'm not sure where we are at with it currently.

Ah, but you have this wonderful poll to gauge the attendance. Looks like you'll have 29 + 2 busloads. Lets be conservative and say a busload is 40, plus the driver. So you have about 111 people coming.

Someone should totally bribe two greyhound drivers to tape "Dwarf Fortress!" signs to their buses and make a stop by where you're gathering just to make Rainseeker freak out over where to put everyone.

You could always go by plane to North California... for a ~$250 round trip fare. Total travel time would be reduced to around 1/3rd of a full drive though.

Okay guys, the best rate at the cleanest hotel I could find is:

69.99 + tax, at the Quality Inn on 2059 Hilltop Drive. Redding, CA 96002 - (530) 221-6530

the name of the group is Bay12, and it's just across the street from the Molly Stones where the meet will be.

This is $15 off their regular rate, includes breakfast, etc.  There are cleaner hotels for more money, or cheaper hotels that are a little crappier.  The customer reviews aggrigated on Google give it 3 out of 5 stars, and having read through them it sounds like a pretty decent place.

First of all, I may or may not actually be bringing my +1. My friend bailed on me and my brother is a bit iffy on actually going, so I dunno. I'll more than likely still go, though.

For the second question, other than the meetup itself, what are some good tourist sites or places to check out around there? I'm debating about taking off more than just that Friday and spending an extra day or two driving around and seeing the area.

As previously mentioned, Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen are big and majestic touristy type places.

If you're into stuff that's a little more low-key, Whiskeytown Lake has some nice little hiking trails and a swimming beach. The Sacramento River Trail has some pretty good views of the river, along with a cool little peace labyrinth some hippies built about two miles up the south bank.

There's also the Sundial Bridge over the Sacramento, which is another cool thing to check out if you have a little bit of time. Mt. Shasta and Lassen are more like day-trips.

Check out the website for the specific location.  We want everyone to be there at 9:00 sharp so we can go to the 9:30 tour; we need to be 30 minutes early so they will have enough spots for us.  If you arrive any earlier it will be a bonus for you.  Once you get there be sure to purchase a ticket for the 9:30 tour.

I edited the top announcement to reflect this.

It's almost time!  I CANNA WAIT!

really?  I talked to the GM myself, she said it was a "manager's rate" and I spelled the group name for her like 5 times because she kept thinking I was saying "baseball".

I have a reservation under that group, it better still be valid.  Has anyone else been having problems?

Yeah, they had no idea what I was talking about. They said they had a few cancelled groups or something around there, but they had no idea what I meant by Bay12. Maybe I should've said "baseball", or spelled it out, or something, I dunno. Though I am curious if anyone else is having problems.

Either way, I just set up reservations at the Super 8 because they didn't charge me $15 extra a night just for two beds. It's a bit farther away, but that doesn't bother me at all.

Well, I feel like something of a screwup on the hotel front.  Being fairly upset that Xgamer4 couldnt get in on the discounted rate and not having heard from any one else who was taking advantage of it, I called the hotel to check in on everything.  And they didnt have anything on file except my own reservation and were planning on charging me the full ammount.

I dont know how many other people they turned away or simply didnt give the rate to, so I canceled my reservation and ended up booking somewhere else.  I'll probably end up paying more for a worse room, but at least I can feel self righetously indignant about it.

Sorry guys, it was my responsibility to make the group rate thing work for people, and I didnt drive it hard enough.  Certainly the problem is a little more difficult since none of us know each other or are in touch beyond the forum, but I still had ownership of the task and I didnt provide enough follow up on it.  I hope it hasnt caused too many problems for people.

I'll be getting in to town tonight, though I'm not sure what time.  If anyone wants to hook up for a beer or something you can send me a PM and I'll check it from the road.  Either shoot me your number, or I can respond with mine and we can try to connect in Redding.

My brother and I are currently sitting at the Super 8 in Redding, having been a bit over-paranoid about travel time. Right now we're just looking for a good place to eat, so if anyone has any suggestions, don't be afraid to post them. I'm 20 and my brother's 17, so bars or something are kinda out of the picture, though.

Thanks for the suggestion, but neither of us really want Mexican food right now. I think we're gonna check out this Thai restaurant called Nipa's Thai Cuisine.

Yelp gives it 3.5 stars and it sounds quite good, if you like Thai food.

No worries at all. That's a bit farther than I want to go right now, so I'll see ya tomorrow. I'm 5'10"ish, mid-length, dark brown hair, and I answer to Greg. My brother will probably be near me, and he answers to Jeff.

I have family getting married tomorrow and some grad school open houses... If I make the meetup I'll end up driving over 500 miles tomorrow. I'm still weighing my options.

Not sure if I'm going to be able to make it but we'll see. I've spoken to all the others that were thinking about carpooling down with me.

If I don't make it I hope you all have fun!

Zach and I arrived an hour ago.  Is anybody planning on streaming the meetup tomorrow?  I have a laptop computer with a webcam here now, but I don't have any software for it (or don't know how to use it if it is hidden on here somewhere or if it mostly works through the web somehow).  Assuming the restaurant's internet works, I guess we could set it up early on there (assuming it can be done) or I could get it ready now if anybody has information for me...  assuming I don't fall asleep, which is also possible.

Regarding streaming, al you need to do is to make an account at livestream.com (It's free) and download their software. it's rediculously easy to use.

Looks like there's a 50 viewer limit for my account and no way to get it increased before the meetup.  If somebody there wants to use a verified channel through this computer, then maybe we won't have that limit.  For now, the limited channel is untested at "bay12games" through livestream.  I'm not sure what the format of the URL is.

Dwarfs in cali....im surprised you were not all ambushed by a thousand elves.
It was in Redding, which is Northern California, there's not really much pop culture there. All of that is in the Bay Area (SFO) and Los Angeles/San Diego in the south.

Note to self: Make a time machine and travel to California, one second before Toady arrives. Then kill replace him with me, then...I don't know. I guess curl up into a ball and die because I forgot to bring waffles...
You would have fit in well.  ;)  These outlandish hypothetical scenarios were a primary form of interaction at the meetup.

Wow, look at all those blue jeans and t-shirts. Everyone keeping a comfortable distance. It's like the interior of a Games Workshop!
These meet ups should be done once a month so us introverts get to go outside more often.

Here are some photos of the QA session at the restaurant. The cavern tour was dark, cramped, and fast paced so I didn't take any photos in there. While posting these photos I discovered my web browser/imageshack does different things with color than Windows photo viewer.

What would be brilliant is a kind of roguelike convention, with costumes and everything. I can see it now, nerds as far as the eye can see dressed in cardboard armour, the Dwarf Fortress crowd distinquishable by their large beards and spraypainted blue armour with splotches of red and green.

PowerGoal 89, DIGESTIVE TRACT LESSON, (Future): You are eaten by the dragon. It chews on you briefly, and you are grieviously wounded, but it swallows you and you survive. The powerful acids in its stomach surround you, but you are protected by your ring. Eventually you are passed into the intestines, where nutrients and water are absorbed, and then you are excreted.

Now thats awesome!

You call that a powergoal?
THIS is a powergoal:

PowerGoal 45, MEET THE CYBERFIST, (Future): You use your iron geared prosthetic hand to crush a piece of stone in front of the cowering goblin, and it passes out.

I'd love an excuse to visit a place which combines french fries with gravy on an industrial scale.

I think Manitoba is as far as The Grand Toad in The Sky can go from his Grand Dominion on the third story.

People are having trouble noticing why this was on the west coast.

Dwarfs in cali....im surprised you were not all ambushed by a thousand elves.

(though if you ever go to the midwest i could bring plenty of folks)

if elves are from california.. does that mean dwarves are from texas?

I only mentioned Gencon in case anyone else was going.  Toady's participation didn't even cross my mind.

none of you guys has a decent dwarf beard?!

It's not the beard on the outside that counts- it's the beard on the inside.

I thought only pregnant dwarfettes had those.

Well, Toady looks basically exactly as I had imagined him.  Everyone else meanwhile looks exactly like me.  Come on guys, can't we manage at least a little genetic diversity?  Maybe a hair colour other than brown?  It's like we were all cloned in a vat then released into the wild, and Dwarf Fortress is the secret signal the researchers use to call us back in so we can be studied.

I was also struck by the similarity in bone structure, no perfect matches though...maybe we're only the second generation of clones, so there isn't much diversity yet, but the next batch should be better.

Blonde, broad-shouldered, slightly overweight 5'10, shuns t-shirts and hasn't worn jeans in 10 years... am I the free radical in the experiment? Or is this only people that actually were able to come?

Looks like it was a lot of fun. Wish I could've made it, it'd be cool to meet Tarn in person.

I think I would have stood out a bit in the pictures. Bit over 6'6" with a long red beard. My hair is brown too, though - so no difference there. Shades of brown are a pretty common hair color though.
