Life Advice / Monies and investment
« on: January 28, 2021, 06:07:45 am »
Hey all.

I have a fair sum saved but bank interest is terrible. I was wondering if there was a way to improve my gains. So I looked into stock investment, which is largely above my head. In so doing, however, I learned about robo-advisors, which seem to be algorithms which invest your money for you at a percentage fee (say 0.5%).

I'm always suspicious of a silver bullet, though. Does anyone know if it's a good idea?

General Discussion / Which Knight are you?
« on: June 10, 2020, 09:37:06 am »
I tried to find that old quiz thread, but for the life of me couldn't. This is a quiz for Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive and sorts you into one of the knights.

Let us know which order claims you.

April is National Poetry Writing Month, and over its duration the Young Poets Network is giving daily writing prompts. For many of us, time is no longer a constraint. We are in our homes, separated from family and friends. I say that the internal world can be as rich as the external, and challenge you to prove me right.

I will (hopefully) be posting a daily poem here. You are welcome to join in; encouraged, in fact. The YPN's first prompt is:

Fool's gold, gooseberry fool, or a fool and his money...

Write a fool-featuring poem for April fool's day.

The second is:

Write a recipe or a menu poem

I hope to post one for each today, having started a day late!

DF General Discussion / Recovering DF saves
« on: November 29, 2018, 09:46:01 am »
I suspect you can't, but I may as well ask. In my save folder, I have "Current" and "[InsertWorldNameHere]". I saved recently in what turned out to be a very bad place. Is there any way to access previous saves, even if they aren't in the save folder? I do believe it's impossible, but I'd not turn down a miracle :P

Life Advice / Postgraduate Employment
« on: November 27, 2018, 11:19:57 am »
Hey all. This is a rather wide-ranging (not to mention horribly subjective) question, so my apologies in advance.

Since I started university, and a bit before, I wanted to be a lecturer. I got a first degree with honours in English and History and started my Master's in History, and anticipate a first there as well (all being well). Recently, I've examined my ambition more closely and realised that I don't want to do a PhD. I feel like I could do one, but the drive to do so is gone - I don't want to be a lecturer, and while I love my subject I don't feel a PhD for the sake of a PhD is a good idea.

Which makes this my last year in education, and my future is suddenly uncharted for the first time.

As such, I'm going to be looking for employment, and I of course want the best paid job available. But I'm not even sure where to look, or what job I could feasibly do with a predominantly-humanities based subject. If anyone has any insights or experience with the same, I'd be thankful.

As an aside, I live in the U.K. (Northern Ireland), and don't have any plans to leave.

Life Advice / Skincare
« on: September 04, 2018, 12:43:16 am »
For the past few months I've been getting rather annoying acne along my lower face, usually in the area from the corners of my mouth to chin. Mostly small lumps with white centre, sometimes inflamed and red. Normally I wouldn't care, but they seem to be coming as often as they go.

I wash daily, of course, and my skin doesn't appear to be oily. I looked up solutions, but there's simply a plethora of random, sometimes expensive stuff which may not work because everyone is different.

This is not meant to plague an adult. Any advice?

DF Gameplay Questions / Alligator breeding
« on: April 24, 2018, 01:39:17 pm »
Hey,

I just caught a breeding pair of the big ol' snappers. However, I've not really used egg-layers before. Do they need to be tamed? Does the bug stopping aquatic animals from egg-lying apply to them?

Thanks.

Life Advice / Work Related
« on: January 18, 2018, 10:00:30 pm »
So, I work nightshift over the weekend and do university stuff over the week.

It tends to leave me drained, but I'm typically mostly recovered by Monday. Still hateful, though.

Anyway, there's a position open for a day shift job. The hourly rate is less, and there are fewer hours. From 15 paid hours to 12 and a half.

I'm rather torn between "yay! money!" and "well, night shift makes me rather grumpy with everyone when I wake up in the morning (evening)." Any advice?

Creative Projects / Poetry Prompts
« on: May 24, 2016, 04:27:28 pm »
So, I was inspired by Jopax's "Daily Draw" to create this thread, in which I will endeavour to post a poem per day. To accompany each poem I will probably add a prompt, so that any wishing to join in may do so. The general idea is to give myself motivation to write, as I have been doing precious little of it as is, but anybody wishing to join in is welcome. The prompt may be heeded or ignored as the individual sees fit.

So under the prompt of "Intimacy" -

Gentle as dreaming, friendly seeming
The darkness of the sheen, the light
Behind the veil of skin. How nights
Could pass, with nothing but the steady
Beat of heart-on-heart. How hand
And body joined, and were found ready
For the love that others scorn to dream of.

DF Gameplay Questions / River Deaths
« on: May 17, 2016, 11:24:35 am »
As the title suggests, I've been having deaths in my river. It freezes over, they walk over it, it thaws, they die.

Is there any way to make them stay off it and keep to the bridges I built? I seem to recall being able to direct traffic somehow, but I can't find it now. Thanks!

General Discussion / The General Musing Thread
« on: August 02, 2015, 07:42:52 pm »
This sums it up:
'Things that made you go "Hmmmmm..." today.'

I don't know if this thread isn't already in some form being done, or if it has been done and has been a flop. Really, all it is is a thread in which the split second inspirations you have can be put down on the Forum-grade paper. If you have some logic that you've been mulling over, post it here. If you have some form of epiphany that is almost ineffable, you can effing try to put it here.

Only a small rule, really: Anything even slightly inflammatory, racist, sexist, or any shade of insulting is not permitted. You can muse about the racial impacts of blacks being inferior to whites, or women superior to men[/examples], on your own time.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Necromancers
« on: June 22, 2015, 02:14:09 pm »
I made a Necrotrainer, but the Necromancer wasn't raising any corpses. I sent somebody to stand on the bridge, just to make sure the bridge was down (it is one tile thick.) The dwarf, because I forgot they could do this, jumped across and started attacking the Necromancer. The Necromancer finally raises the corpse on the other side.

I managed to catch him again, and now I am wondering if Necromancers need to be provoked before they will raise anything now?

Life Advice / University Course
« on: September 20, 2014, 11:31:40 pm »
I am torn between two options. There is English with Creative Writing, and English and History.

These are the two courses I'd like to do. But I don't know which is more likely to lead to a job at the end.

I'm very worried about the consequences of a bad choice, and any advice/help would be greatly appreciated,

Thank you.

The wind coming from the mountains beyond the walls bears the scent of summer on it, despite winter fast approaching. The land has just recently shaken off the mantle of night, and the breeze plays with your clothes as you walk to Wrafton’s inn. Where you would have expected ice, you see instead water in the ruts of the road. Approaching Winterhaven's local inn, you push open the oaken door and enter.

A fire blazes in one corner, making the room hot, almost uncomfortable. Wooden rafters hold aloft the ceiling, and stone flags make up the floor. In one corner a group of people play dice, and some look glumly into their cups. It is too early for any real joviality, but looking around you soon see those you were looking for. A big, burly man with three others seated at his table. When your eyes rest on him, he waves you over and motions you to sit.

After you do, he speaks:

Well, my boys, you are all now here. I am Thornton, and you will soon be in my employ. But before we talk business, you should become better acquainted.

He sits back, obviously waiting on you to introduce yourself to the others.

Creative Projects / The Poetry Thread
« on: August 06, 2014, 03:35:47 pm »
What? Why, yes, I know this thread ain't going to be popular. Still, nice to have it lying around, no?

So, this thread is to do with all things poetical. (And as of Reply 155, lyrics as well, it would seem!) Want help writing a poem? Ask here. Written one? Post it here. Want to discuss one? Post it here. Have a favourite one? Post i....

You get the picture. To start off, I'll post my favourite poem: The Listeners, by Walter de la Mare.

If posting a favourite/favoured poem, giving the author would help me to accredit it properly.

All poems so far posted. Those written by the poster will be noted with a "Written by himselfthemself"(Because I realised the gender problem writing "himself" poses):
