Title: Rainseeker's Web Comic Project!!!
Post by: Rainseeker on March 04, 2011, 12:46:16 am
Hey guys!  A while ago I posted here that I was working on a web comic project (can't find the thread any more).  The website isn't perfect yet, but it's there!  I know this community doesn't look for visual perfection, but content, so I would be honored if you guys would be the "beta testers" for my site.  ;)

It's about a city where rodents and cats live together.  At its heart it's a detective-buddy comedy.  Let me know what you think!

I'd comment but I'd have to put up spoiler tags... and I hate them!

It works though.

Edit JIC: by them I mean spoiler tags... hate them

Good luck! I'll RSS this 8)

Also so far quite charming and funny.

Though it has yet to go in a dirrection. It usually takes quite a few strips before a comic reveals its true flavor.

Yay!  Yes, honestly it will be about 25 strips until we stop meeting people and meet the actual "mystery" part of the plot.  Don't worry, there IS a plot!

:)

A mystery... like if Cats and Mice can give birth to eachother, if females can be impregnated by both but can only give birth to their own species, or if those kids are adopted.

Ohh the mysteries of anthropomorphic animals.

I like the style very much, it feels very suitable for the setting, so don't change it, it's perfect :)

Unfortunately I don't have webcomic friends.

That and I can't do puppydog eyes.

Though if I ever do get into a discussion about webcomics, Ill be sure to mention it. As viral as that would be.

I don't mind at all being compared to Roald Dahl!  :D  I never intended to emulate his style, but nice, nonetheless.

Yes! Roald Dahl. It was on the tip of my tongue. For, uh, five days, I guess >_>

It's a bit cleaner and neater than Dahl though, which certainly isn't a bad thing.

Also, I'm really not used to seeing hamsters as characters. I thought Hamm was a cat with off ears until now, which confused me as to why he was playing cards with mice. He'd have to be a tiny cat. Haha.

Lady-waitress rat is trollin' him pretty hard.

Cats in my world are very tall, even taller than rats.  Mice and hamsters are the shortest, they are about the same height, but mice's ears are taller.  The two rats you see eating with Hamm the hamster are Molly's (the server).  They are at her diner.  Molly's is run by her and her husband cook.

Oh, and in Rattown, species don't intermingle, so to speak.  I've decided that it just doesn't come up.

So what inspired this web comic project, Rainseeker?

I've been rattling this story around in my head for about 7 years or more.  It's kind of a culmination of a childhood dream to write a comic.  It's been really fun and a LOT more work than I thought it would be!

Oh, and the new comic is up!  Check it out!

Have you ever given thoughts to up loading your comic on the several free webcomic host and then having them point to your site, in order to build awareness and advertise your webcomic?

I'm a little hesitant about going to such places, seeing as there is often so much adult-rated content, and I'm trying to go for PG rating.  You have any recommendations?

Something about your comic is head twitchingly weird.

and somehow cute... very very cute...

Maybe it has something to do with how horrible things happen but things are all the better for it somehow.

I dunno why but I really like that the rodents seem to inherently think cats are awesome.  I'm interested to see where this is going.

I know, I am starting to wonder if the Cats REALLY enslaved them or if the Rats just thrust their services on them almost against their will.

I can understand why that Hamster who I STILL think is a cat is sort of mad. He wants to do a good job and earn things for himself but society is dead set on turning him to a success whether he really deserved it or not.

Id say some cats must have a low self-esteem... but this is Rainseeker's comics. No matter how bad things seem on paper the reality is that things are actually all the better for it.

Immediately, I love this comic. It has a very engaging plot! The Cats seem to be the acclaimed nobility - or rather, they were, and this lead to their 'power' downfall. (At least this is the impression I got from the Cat in an Alley frame)

Yep, totally!  Think Canada, where the governing monarchy peacefully freed the country, and now they love the old monarchy.  Possibly in an unhealthy, enabling way.

Goodness I am not sure if the new one or the last one was funnier

Though I am conflicted if the very last panel makes that page worse or better.

Though given that this is a narrative and not just "Random nonsense forever" I guess it would be better.

So I guess Cats are sort of a social absolence device for the rats. Goodness is Rat psychology interesting.

So I'm guessing the rats are the only one of the rodents that behave that way with cats?  Or are they all like that and Hamm just a lone soul of sanity in a world full of misplaced love?

He was sprucing himself up so that he is more attractive to his rat charity patrons.

Either that or a gentlemen thief.

I'd say Con Artist but unless that Cat is a Hamster... I am not sure how it would work (Heck I already pictured in my head how a side comic about a Cat Con-Artist would go)

HOLY DANG! I can't believe I missed Page 3. It is almost vital and hillarious! Why do I picture Rat parades being a common event?

Rat Announcer 1: "Hello welcome to the 20th anual hurray day parade"
Rat Announcer 2: "Yes, it is today we celebrate the one week between Yay day and the Wow stampede"
Rat Announcer 1: "For all those thinking this is just another excuse to have a parade"
Rat Announcer 2: "IT IS!"
Rat Announcer 1 & 2: "HURRAY!!!" *Tosses Graffiti in the Air*

Anyhow I kicked myself several times to do it... but I posted the comic on my wall on Facebook.

Not that anyone will actually look there (since I have to use Facebook to help my mother with those HORRIBLE facebook games.)

That was surprisingly easy... Not in the "I am surprised the mice were soo poor at fighting" or "I am surprised the hamster, who looks like a cat to me, was so good". It looked too easy, like the hamster just walked in and lightly tossed the rats as they attacked by lightly palming our main protagonist.

It gave one REALLY odd panel where the mouse just sort of... touched the hamster's cheek and I am not sure what was actually happening. I can only guess mice are exceptionally weak or something.
Title: Re: Rainseeker's Web Comic Project!!!
Post by: Rainseeker on May 05, 2011, 10:20:42 am
Yes, Hamm is really embarrassed at having to beat up mice.  He IS good at fighting, so he's using a simple "grab and throw" technique.  He's not that fast, really.  I also didn't want to drag the fight scene into another week.

Heh, the one where Hamm gets punched in the face and the fist sinks in was a hard panel, so forgive me for not being clear:  Hamster cheeks are stretchy, so the punch didn't really matter.  Kind of like Luffy from One Piece!  ;)

Yeah, Hamm doesn't mind getting wet per se, it's just that he doesn't enjoy getting spritzed with glass cleaner or sprayed with mouth-water.  Man, he's picky.

Thanks for the nice comment Halberdear!

Cool.

I like how well drawn they are.  Or more they are consistently drawn, and therefore a good job is being done.

Can't wait for the story to kick in.

It has a fairly realistic but characterized feel to the dialog, so it could be a lot of fun to read when the plot kicks in.

Oh hey, there's a thread for this (although I do not know why I am surprised.) I should visit the lower forums more frequently.

I've been following since you plugged it on DF Talk- I'm a sucker for buddy cop stories. I, for one, hope to hear more of Hamm's old adventures- the Punctual Church Bell sounds particularly intriguing.

the Punctual Church Bell sounds particularly intriguing

It also sounds very insider, relative to the fact that I've never heard a church bell before.

Unless that is the point. That it isn't unusual at all.

unless it is unusual but mundane

The Punctual Church Bell sounds particularly intriguing.

Glad you think so!  Maybe I will visit old cases in the future, who knows!  In the meantime, I'll challenge the community here to create theoretical recaps of the mysteries I titled there.  So, you know, I can steal them -er- I mean, so we can have fun.

Hamm was visiting the laundramat one day when he encountered a poor crying young rat.  The rat had a new pair of pants that he bought to work at his new office job.  Because he had been unemployed for so long he only had enough money to buy one pair of office pants.

But 'lo he came to the laundromat for their first washing and they vanished after the cycle!  His hopes and dreams of employment so horribly dashed!  They won't allow him to work in his usual day to day pants!

And then another customer came up to the rat after hearing the story and apologized, returning the pants.  She was doing the laundry for her family of 6 and accidentally thought that the pants belonged to her family and discovered the mistake right in the middle of his sad, sad story.

Everybody was happy and Hamm was credited for the solved 'case' in the paper.

I just realised something odd in the latest comic.

It is fine, just interesting timing issues that reflects bad habits Hamm has picked up.

Thank goodness Beauregard was there or else Hamm would have litterally choked on his words :D

It is a truly evil villain to continue turning the crank when their plan is clearly backfiring.

Hamm makes an excellent villain.  One of those short round evil genius types when compared to the rats.  Kind of Like Dr Evil, but shorter and...uh...hammier.

And that female rat's face is...weird.  I can't tell if she's confused, disgusted, thinking really really hard, or if she just realized she sat in a big wad of used bubblegum.

I'm not sure I should use hamster's natural pouch-packing abilities in the comic.  I tend to shy away from Looney-Tunes type physical humor, but it IS natural.  Maybe Hamm has a gun in his pouch?  My hamsters have emptied their pouches after having them for a long time and they don't seem to be wet, so maybe it would still fire.  Is it too much for the spirit of my comic?  I'm not sure, and I've gone back and forth on this.  What do you guys think?
Title: Re: Rainseeker's Web Comic Project!!!
Post by: monk12 on August 21, 2011, 11:26:32 pm
It's a tricky thing- it would be pretty hilarious if Hamm had everything he needed to solve any given problem hidden in his mouth, but then, Hamm seems to be more of a Only Sane Man (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OnlySaneMan) type of guy while Beauregard is the Wise Guy (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StraightManAndWiseGuy) of the duo (and a Cloud Cuckoo Lander (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CloudCuckooLander) to boot.)

I suppose it rather depends what you want to do with the character- if Hamm is going to play Straight Man the entire time, I'd stay away from it, but if his partnership with Beau loosens him up then maybe it would be appropriate. In any event, it's too good a gag to waste, so if Hamm doesn't keep it I hope some other hamster picks it up.
Title: Re: Rainseeker's Web Comic Project!!!
Post by: Rainseeker on August 21, 2011, 11:41:37 pm
Hehe, I love tropes!

It's a good point - I don't see why another hamster wouldn't do it, even if Hamm doesn't.  Although, I see Hamm as a kind of boy scout, pretty ready for any situation, but I suppose it doesn't have to be like Batman's belt.

Also I don't even see why Hamm would even have a gun... The comic has yet to even prove Hamm is a detective who would even need a gun.

Heck I always pictured Hamm's "Unusually quiet church bell" case to have gone like this

Rat: "Hmm, the bell isn't ringing"
Hamm: "There is no bell in the tower"
*All the rats are in total awe until Hamm leaves the scene
Rat: "YAY!"

Agreed. And the alt text made me laugh.

Hehe, glad you guys like it!  The final panel's punchline had me swaying between the punchline I chose and, "The sound effects are amazing, but don't the good guys usually win in these things?"

I chose to break the fourth wall instead.

I've changed the punchline on the previous comic, it turns out it was too vague that the rats were taxi drivers actually at a bathing seminar, so I tried to make it more clear without actually hitting the reader over the head with it.  Anyways, I've also put up a new comic!  Check it out!

Poor little hat ghost.

And yes, I do believe that big Elton John glasses are a standard knightly accessory, replacing the outmoded helmet-with-visor.

No, it basically takes place in Rat-Canada, New York/San Francisco/Los Angeles.  I know, I know.  Convoluted.  :P

So it takes place in the country of Rat Canada... in the City of Everycity USA.

The reason I use Canada as an example is because they have an honoring relationship with England, and they never rebelled.  This is the society Rattown exists in. There are still Royal Cats back in the Old Country, maybe we'll meet one some day!  :o

For the digital inking, it takes some of the subtle crosshatching out, but also makes the final product more defined and visibly distinct.  It's got pros and cons to it.  I'd suggest using the digital inking for day to day 'gag' comics and the old style for more panoramic scenery type drawings.

Yeah, I still haven't tried the big scenery with the new technique!  I wonder how it will go.  Well, like you said, I can always go back if needed.

Hey Monk!  Yeah, it's been all-consuming, almost.  I feel really guilty about Rattown right now, like I'm letting a whole city down!   :'(

But you can guys can see us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/MeasuresOfJoy (http://www.facebook.com/MeasuresOfJoy)!  We do catering and custom orders too, so feel free to call us if you'd like us to ship stuff, the number is on the page there.

Hey, is anybody out there still subscribed?  I need help.  I'm working on this project as a novel now (because it doesn't require me to put out regular updates).  I hope to let you guys in to some of what I've been writing.

In the story, Hamm's background includes many solved cases, and I wanted the case names to be silly or just plain weird.  Anyone remember some of what was previously stated (I'm feeling lazy) or any suggestions?

Well, I'm not going to be helpful here because all I've got is wishes of good luck!

Good luck with the novelization!

I've written quite a bit, but here is my first newspaper article written for the Rattown Gazette.  It kind of teases what will be the plot.  I hope those of you familiar with the comic will find this recognizable in its tone.

RATTOWN CITY COUNCIL PASSES NEW PRO-CAT JOB LEGISLATION
Poor, adowable kitties to wecieve extwa hewp

By Beatrice Blue

All-around great-guy Council-cat Amadeus Chomper has done it again and proposed amazing legislation that would further help cats in Rattown.  The bill was proposed and unanimously passed at the Rattown City Council meeting last night in the Great Room at Town Hall.  The three-hundred twenty-three page bill will basically require businesses to hire kitties who want to work.  When it passed, a great cheer went up from those sitting in the thousand-seat hall (and from the standing-room only wings where speakers piped the session).

During the session, when the public was invited to give input to the bill (before it unanimously passed), most rats were very excited to give their input.

“I love it!  Poor kitties can work if they want now!” said one excited rat.

Another said, “This day is very great.  Kitties are being helped!”

“Kitties are so cute,” said a small rat who stood up out of turn, but applause rang out and the rats on the council nodded wisely.

The only dissenting voice was from the old and crotchety mouse Ignatius Happypaws (who is never happy). “We need to stop this tomfoolery!” He exclaimed in his crotchety voice. “Cats can already work if they want to.  My cleaning company can’t support employees who take five naps a shift and who will ignore what we tell them.  Not to mention the jobs that the cats will be stealing from hard-working blue-collar mice everywhere!  This is going to be like every other cat-helping bill that Rattown passes.  It hurts the hard-working rodents and the upper-class wealthy rats don’t notice a thing!”

The council turned their heads in unison to look at Council-cat Chomper, but the mayor spoke up.  “I for one completely support this bill, and…”

“I think cats will surprise us,” said Council-cat Chomper mysteriously, with a strange gleam on his adorable, mask-like face.

“Yes,” said the mayor, “They certainly surprise me on a daily basis.  Why, just yesterday, I saw a kitty who had wandered into the City Hall courtyard chasing a butterfly!  It was adorable!”

The entire hall broke into laughter.

“I was so overtaken by how cute he was I asked him what he was doing.  He said, ‘I’m gonna get me some butter!’”

The laughter escalated, and many council-rats nodded and said, “Yes, that is so cat.”

Ignatius Happypaws was not happy.  “Let me again reiterate that this is ridiculous.  There hasn’t EVER been a mouse on the city council – despite many attempts by myself and others – and yet the moment a stray asks to be put on the council, the council bends over backwards to get him on!”

“Well, look at him,” argued the mayor, “He’s just so cute! Look at the way he puts his paws over his face in embarrassment!”

Council-cat Chomper was very cute with his paws over his face.

“Plus,” continued the mayor, his voice turning syrupy-sweet, “Just wook at his stubby widdle tail, the pwide and joy of every cat.  The poor thing!”

“Awww,” said everyone.  Council-cat Chomper’s ears went red (which only went to further accentuate his adorable cat-ness).

Overall, it was a very productive meeting, and many, many rats and cats (and other rodents as well) were happy last night.  The law should go into effect over the next month.  Business owners should look for notices in the mail of how it will affect them.
