Title: Dwarf Fortress Talk #4: Feedback
Post by: Toady One on November 04, 2009, 04:14:36 am
The fourth one has been posted. (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/df_talk.html)

Any comments about the format, content, quality, etc. of the call are welcome.

We took questions from the old thread.  We haven't talked yet about what's going to happen there.

Update: Here we have the pre-hyperlink transcript. (http://www.bay12games.com/media/df_talk_4_transcript.html)  Links should be up later on.

4th one, when did this happen? I am a bit stunned that it can roll out so unmonumentously.

I gotta go check it out.

He he, it's going in the dev log in a few hours, but I put up the thread early.

Agreed. The website needs to play truppets and have big flashing arrows pointing to the DF talks every time another comes out.

Mind control you say?

Command us oh most toady lord, and we shall obey!

Anyway, lots of great questions and responses, especially on the mounts and time dilation stuff.  I love the esoteric answers that meander off into crazy stories and extemporizing on the world of Dwarf Fortress.

Oh yeah, and Daslaeh's avatar thing is creepy.

And, for future reference, I'm male and it's pronounced 'Mef-AN-stair-as'.

That bit about the dwarves fighting each other reminds me of this bug I heard was in this game (Oblivion, I think). Someone would go out and hunt a deer, which made him a criminal, so a guard would attack him. This made him a criminal, so another guard would attack the first one. This made him a criminal, another guard came, and so on, until all of the guards were fighting outside the city gates. Now, due to the lack of guards, shops would be looted and etc.

Just in listened through this: I am Indeed brainwashed! I *AM* unable to go on with my life and function in society, and I WOULD follow orders that are not in my best interest!

On topic the mounts: One thing that I have always wanted to see in a game when it comes to mounts is that it should be a separate creature that might have different motivations than the rider and such, horses avoiding obstacles by themselves or refusing to enter places that scare them and so on in an organic manner rather than being grass powered motorbikes.

Abut the timescales: At some point way in the future, depending on exactly HOW easy it is, maybe having forts moving at adventure mode speed could be a worlgen option or something for players that have way to much time/leaves the game on overnight/own a supercomputer/play it as a challenge of some kind?

As always, this podcast was absolutely awesome! Beyond Quality even!

Ah, yes. Even though it's kind of just saying "me too", I'd also like to have an option to have the Dwarf mode go at the "real time" speeds, I'm often a little miffed about games having all kinds of speedups for the passage of time, at least excessive ones... I mean, I might go for time acceleration of two or four times, but doing 20-50 times the speed of normal is a bit fast... ;)

Also, I still say Shadow of the Colossus is the only game in which there was a horse that did not behave like a moped. ;)

I liked this one too.  Two especially interesting things came up: leaders "visibly" weighing decisions, and storing knowledge at the civ level as a baseline for less significant individuals.

The first one is a really important concept, not just in worldgen, and not just for decisions like whether to go to war.  DF is increasingly moving toward subtle mechanics -- systems that interact in cool ways that evoke our instinctive understand of the world.  We've already seen the beginnings of this in various personality/relationship/mood mechanics, like dwarves developing grudges when their personalities are incompatible (that's how it works, right?) and then getting angry when forced to hang out together.  However, ultimately these mechanics are wasted unless they're presented to the player in some fashion.

Obviously there are good and bad ways to present them -- you don't want to be like "Hey player, check out these awesome die rolls!", and conversely you shouldn't force the player to root through personality screens to deduce these interactions (it's not only uncompelling, but also really artificial, when you get down to it).  Ideally they would be presented by characters in the game world, such as a historian discussing a leader's motivations in text (or in person), or a dwarf visibly complaining to a friend about a specific social situation.  In situations involving shy or secretive individuals, it's reasonable that the player should have to make some deductions.

The second idea, storing knowledge at the civ level, seems like a really promising approach.  (Yes, I'm harping on the knowledge system again.)  Obviously you'd want to store some knowledge at a local level too, and maybe for entities in general, since guilds, cults, etc. could definitely have some special knowledge.  From there, once the game decides that a person needs to be individualized, it can use their entity membership, personality, occupation, etc. to determine how much they should know about things.

I had actually been considering posting suggestions on both of these topics, but it sounds like Toady's already done more thinking about it than I have.

Ah, yes. Even though it's kind of just saying "me too", I'd also like to have an option to have the Dwarf mode go at the "real time" speeds, I'm often a little miffed about games having all kinds of speedups for the passage of time, at least excessive ones... Yeah, putting timescales in init has come up a couple times.  I'd really like that option too -- I personally don't like seasons going by so fast, it feels ridiculous.

I don't think half-brothers are e'en possible in DF right now with the (ugh) eternal monogamy.

A rule of thumb for "necessary genetic diversity" is that you need 50 for short-term survival and 500 for long-term, I hear

yay conflicts *fwee* Civil war bug sounds awesome. ('nother reason to be lawless fort!) Sleeping Beauty bug for naming it perhaps? 7 dorfs after all.

Mount & Blade has good horses.

Agreed, though M&B horses have a lot of issues with stopping.  They come to an instantaneous stop on even an oblique collision, and you have to accelerate from zero to get going again, which really cuts down the feeling of momentum and excitement.  One of my least favorite aspects of one of my favorite games.  Just a minor detraction, though.

I look forward to being able to commission artisans (and presumably engravers) to make specific works of art, mainly because then I can decorate my trapped-up invader passages with images of what happens to those who challenged my might.  "Hey, I found a side entrance!  It's open and everything."  "Uh, Os... about those engravings on the wall..." "We ain't here to stare at an art gallery!  We got dwarves to..." *click* *Os glances at engravings*  "Uh oh..."

That was quite interesting! I'm interested in seeing the exact algorithms used during world-gen, to generate all the mountains and decide on where the lakes go. Not that I'm asking for the source code to be released, in part or in full. That would be rude. And probably break intellectual property laws or something. Not to mention get me banned from the forums. Or hunted down by an angry mob. With lignite-and-iron torches.

Just saying that I'm interested.

There were a few extra details about the worldgen process in this part of the Gamasutra interview (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3549/interview_the_making_of_dwarf_.php?page=7) (and the whole thing is interesting reading even though it's a year or two old).

Shale, Coral, Bark, Mossy, Dewy, Amber, Hazel, Acorn, Clay, Muddy, Marigold, etc.

Keep in mind they still have to refer to specific colors. Shale, amber, and hazel are the only ones that are anywhere close, and shale seems a little more suitable for dwarves.

It's not hard to find lists of colors online.  Here are a couple:

And thus an elf had hair of radiant orchid, and eyes of poinsettia.

That seems overly beautiful for DF elves, but then again, they ARE elves. I think that elf may also have partial albinism.

Naaa, not edging on albinism, just light caucasian. Partial albinism is pretty extreme by itself, even for blue eyed blonde people.

Yeah being Albino in anyway isn't as great as television would make it seem (unless it is a freekshow in which case it isn't as bad as it makes it seem)

Personally, I always thought of the elves having the eyes of wolfs or cats, with the glow and such since they live in the woods.

I was wondering, since these talk audio files are essentially a Podcast, is there a cost involved in having the Itunes store provide a free link to subscribe to it?

i only mention this because until this summer i had never tried Itunes but Wizards of the Coast were running a DnD 4e game with the creators of Penny Arcade, PvPOnline and Wil Wheaton, now im using it to keep up with certain radio shows that dont exactly mesh with my real life schedule.

it is purely from a delivery point of view, not that i am claiming that the current delivery method is no good, the contrary in fact.

Your credit card will not be charged for submission of a podcast.

So yeah, looks like it's free.  Might be worth looking into if y'all want to increase listenership.

Sorry Rainseeker when I said so I meant it as a joke rather then a berration.
