Title: Gonna Fly Into the Danger Zone - Terrifying area, blind
Post by: Zinc23 on May 04, 2012, 08:48:52 pm
Welcome to ChanneledScarlet.  I have no idea how to begin this, so I'll just start with the first thing I see when I establish my fortress.  Eyeball plants and worm tendrils.  Then a Louse Zombie ATE my fisherdwarf.

Thus begins the ****ed up history of....

CHANNELEDSCARLET

I have begun tunneling out a small shelter from the acrid, fever causing slush.  Thankfully, everyone but the aforementioned fisherdwarf got inside before serious symptoms developed.  As I said, this is blind, with previous knowledge of the game.  Sort of.  So I have no idea if fevers can be bad.  Anyway, the main room is currently being built.  A large stockpile with small branching parts for workshops, and one large meeting space.  More updates later.

Sounds like you're going to have the best type of !!FUN!!. Fresh !!FUN!!, untainted by knowing what things are or why your dwarves are spraying blood everywhere!

Update: 4/5/12 : 9:35 pm

Finished the stockpiles.  In the process of retrieving the wagon's contents, a horde of zombie magpies attacked.  By the grace of Shedim, god of dreams, a rag-tag force of quickly recruited... everyone managed to dispatch them.  Also, the Fisherdwarf's HAND came back to life.  That was quickly killed too.  Now to try and dig a quick passage to seal up these corpses.  If the hand can come back to life, the rest of those things must be able to as well.

Edit: Apparently, the lady right next to the hand was incredibly pissed, and right when it came back to life, she snapped and had a tantrum.  She fucking PUNCHED the hand to death.  She fistbumped her friend's disembodied hand SO hard, it blew up.  Quite impressive.

Edit 2: And then the actual CORPSE got up, and tried to smack around our resident engraver with it's stump of an arm.  And apparently, one of those magpies bit the very same engraver, and bruised his heart.  So apparently, this one dwarf is just walking around with a huge, gaping hole in his chest, with a slightly smashed heart, and bleeding absolutely everywhere, and he is PUNCHING OUT ZOMBIES.

My current fort is in an evil biome, too.
Took me a couple tries to get past spring TBPH.

Not quite, needs to be magma and booze in there somewhere to truly sum DF up methinks.
Still, interested to hear how op's venture goes...

Whelp. The good news for you is that zombies are very easy to kill.

And that's all the help I'm going to give you.

Your lucky, I've been trying to find a good evil area with zombies and syndromes.  So far all I've gotten is blood rains (elf blood rain ftw) and absolutely 0 zombies or skeletons.  I even butcher stuff to make sure it isn't a reanimating area which would be fun, but even in a haunted/sinister/terrifying I don't even get re-animation.  DF seems to plot against me so I don't have !!fun!!  :-[

Increase the interactions at world gen to 10000. Or do some modding to give the undead raising-interaction to every biome.

Update: 5/5/12 : 2:38

Everyone, except the horses and one farmer, is dead.  The Zombie outbreak couldn't be contained.  Thankfully, if the fortress is reclaimed later, they will already have lodging for the first season.  Any further expeditions to the area will be fully armed.

Edit: The final dwarf has, unfortunately, died. The Magpies, Raven Men (Which just appeared, and can ALSO fly), and the fisherdwarf's right hand cornered him and the only healthy horse in the cavern that had been carved out in the dirt for the future corpse stockpile.  He ended up in the right room, at least.  The fortress will be reclaimed soon, but these brave few will be remembered.

Update: 5/5/12 : 3:06

The next expedition has set out with a grand total of 4 novice speardwarfs, one miner/mason/engraver, one butcher/tanner, and one wood cutter/carpenter.  They have the standard 2 picks/axes, 80 drinks, an anvil, 4 copper spears, 30 PH spawn, 5 of all other seeds,  45 units of food, and the usual pig tail cloth set.

They're all dead, again.  The fisherdwarf corpse came back, this time without a lower body.  I anticipate his return after the NEXT reclaim.

SUCCESS!  The newest reclaim has borne the fruits of my labors.  Only one dwarf has died, and we have a fully operable mason's shop set up to make a god-damned door.  Soon, all six dwarves will have a fair chance at life.

The door has been BUILT!  Well, it's ready, at least.  Now to just construct the surrounding walls and shoo everyone inside.

Also, great.  I have played the game before.  I'm playing the UPDATE blind.  Also, shut up.

Have you been attacked by undead Keas yet? Little bastards try to confound me at every turn.
Disrupting jobs, stealing stuff, attacking people, coming back to life AGAIN to repeat indefinitely, you name it.

No, they just try to steal things.
And if you stop them, they try again.
And again. And again. And again and again and again...
Until you either completely obliterate the corpse or manage to hide everything worth more than ☼2 underground for 8 months and they get bored and leave.
Oh, and when they leave, guess what happens? Go on, guess.
FLIPPIN' MORE OF THEM SHOW UP  >:(

The fort has been destroyed.  Again.  The builder in charge of building the doorway was killed.  But I have a plan...

ChanneledScarlet can ONLY be run by a single person.  It's the only way.

I wonder what the hermit's name will be...

A question to more experienced players, since going outside to gather plants and lumber is a bad idea in such a biome, can forgotten be reanimated?

Well, after much trial and error, I just got rid of the old fortress, and got a new one in another zone with the same name.  Annnnnd I just spawned on a shrine.  This will be very... Funnnn...

Edit:  God-DAMN.  Just got some sort of fog roll through, and now I have a yak cow thrall.  Damn, now I can't unload the rest of the stuff from the wagon.  By the way, I sent the other six to fight the Colossus.  All of them died horribly.  Wunderbar.

Uberedit: He's locked inside!  I've made it!  For now, at least.  I managed to make a door.  Woo.

Well, I made it through the Aquifer.  Found a small bit of stone, and dug through it, hoping to make a small base in the caverns.  So far, I have the four major underground plants inside, a couple medical supplies, enough drink to last for a few years at least, and enough food to last more.

I have begun excavation of the small Cavern Base.  Best case scenario, it'll be constructed and fortified before any creepy-crawlies get in and try to attack my Hermit.  I'm thinking of making some traps to secure myself, and maybe even tame some... pets.

Update: 18/5/2012 4:07pm

The Bronze Colossus has been preoccupied by those weird zombies from earlier.  Chances are, they'll never die if they haven't yet.  So, since we have that out of the way, I let the other peasants (I reclaimed once trying to get the Hermit inside) build a small shrine before I re-kill them.  Maybe I'll even try to get THEM a small home, away from the Hermit, as a backup dwarfpower force, just in case.

Update: 18/5/2012 7:47

The Fortress of the hermit has become quite... prosperous.  I'm trying to finish the slabs so I can get rid of all these damnable ghosts, and I'm almost finished with the Cavern base.  Top Gun is feeling content, but I need to get him a room.  The Colossus hasn't killed those zombies.  And to top it all off, a caravan just arrived, then shortly after, a fog rolled in.  Yeah, I am NEVER GOING OUT EVER AGAIN.

Edit: Woo!  The slabs are finished, the ghosts are gone, and now I can focus without all these spirits in my thinkspace!  Hmm... After the Cavern Base is finished, I think I'll train with my sword to keep up the swordsdwarf skill.  Hopefully, I can go hunting afterwards.

Annual Edit: The first year has passed!  I'm counting about... 16 dead dwarves, one Bronze Colossus, two Fog Thralls, whatever those are, one awesome hermit, and one half-completed housing unit.  Somehow, I'm still alive.

Every time I've tried to do a hermit run, it's in a normal biome, and the migrants and other people except for my hermit usually die of starvation.  This causes some to go berserk, which leads to killer ghosts, which leads to my hermit getting ripped apart by a dwarven version of Casper, only much angrier.

I should have prioritized slabs more.

You seem to have way more problems, though.  Good luck, it's already quite awesome this early, hope your attempts to cross train go well.

That's a pretty decent dorf you've got there.  Strong, and with good spatial sense.  May the original Urist watch over Top Gun and bless her with evilness and megalomania.

...But the original Urist never had to deal with thralls.  What are your plans, if you have any, to deal with this threat?

I've read of players unleashing the demons on the thralls...and the thralls won, but still, there must be some casualties, right?

Just goes to show.  Make a mason's shop and craftsdwarf's shop IMMEDIATELY when making a hermit fort.  .

I did.  The jobs were queued and ready, but the ghost struck first.

I'm not really sure how to counteract such lethal foes, without some luck.  Really, before doing absolutely anything else, make the slabs, I guess.

Hm, can you bring slabs with you on embark?

Or at least some stone, so you don't have to mine immediately.

The world wasn't ready, son. Until such time as Toady coding beach volleyball into the game, we can't go flying into the danger zone. Not yet, at least.

A sad update: 19/5/2012 11:39am

Your Fortress has crumbled to it's end.

We might be able to reclaim this forsaken land, but it will be difficult.

I think you should. I know, I just said the world wasn't ready, but fuck it, do it. Do it for Top Gun, man.

An excerpt from the journal of Kosoth Tinsizzled:
Entry 1: 16th Granite, Early Spring
Oh god... oh god, the blood.  We arrived, but...  there was too many of those... THINGS.  I made it inside, and got one log of wood.  I found the miner inside, dead as a doornail, slumped up against the wall.  There were words drawn in the wall, hidden under a large coating of dust.  I dusted it off to find a sketch of the walking dead and a large, statue-like creature.  The creature was kicking the undead around, but they just kept coming, stuck in eternal combat.  I fear for the only other living member of the caravan.

Entry 2: 24th Granite, Early Spring
I've made due with what I was given, and I'm working on some pots for booze.  I hauled the miner's corpse to a small, dead end cavern in the halls, so it shouldn't bother me too much.  I managed to barricade the door enough so that none of those murderous husks can come in and punch me to death.  Hopefully, I can get some sort of contact with the rest of civilization set up.  Also, I found some odd structures in the cavern... a full building underground, with some strange markings on the walls.  I'll document that later, when I have more time.

An excerpt from the journal of Kosoth Tinsizzled:
Entry 3: 19th Slate, Mid-spring
I see the cracks of light from under the door to the forsaken outside and I know... I'll never leave this lonely, damp cave again.  This is where I will live, this is where I will die.  It's hopeless, anyhow... I could never really do much in this cave.  I'll keep working, though.
I will live on for as long as I can, or die trying.  So far, the ghosts haven't bothered me too much, but... They are very sad.  It's quite depressing, because even the saddest beings in the world can do more than I can stuck here.

Entry 4: 12th Felsite, Late spring
I smelled something on the otherside of the door.  I cracked it open, and was blinded, before seeing the corpse of the other member I had hoped lived.  Strangely, I felt better.  I was a survivor... a real hero, sort of.  Anyway, I decided to work on the cavern room.  There was a bed in there, so I dusted that off and built a small wall to seperate it.  I drew a quick sketch of it in my free time:

Entry 5: 12th Hematite, Early Summer
Those slabs for the ghosts are almost in place.  It'll be nice to be alone, for just a while.  The bedroom is done, and I've started on the dining room, so I can finally get a nice place to eat.  I'm thinking this could be a nice... retreat, from society.  Of course, I can barely remember the outside.  I hear the bestial screams every time I come to the first floor, but I will stay strong.

Somehow, I just died.  Maybe a Cave Crawler came in.  I have no idea why, but I am suddenly dead.

Liking the diary format, also the fact that you used the dwarf's actual name.  Hermits become more famous when their natural name is used.

Don't give up, this is quite cool, the sheer solitude of such an existence is...well, it's certainly something.

Alright...  One more try.  If I can punch a hole through, I might be able to survive this time.  Last time was a half-hearted victory.  I lost the actual hermit, so one of the extras became the hermit.  I might also be able to bring some war dogs.

Also, from now on, I'll have a backup every season.  That way, I don't lose a good dwarf to something while I'm not looking.

Good plan.

Won't the war dogs just get into a futile fight with undead, or turn into thralls?  Or something equally bad?

Doesn't matter now.  They were ambush bait, or at least the thralls saw them as that.  So, no more... small, cute puppies.  I didn't even bring war dogs, I just got normal dogs to breed.  But they're all dead, along with three dwarves, including the hermit.  So, now we have Thikut Seerhelms.  Is it just me, or is that name awesome?

Entry 1: 16th Granite, Early Spring
That motherfucker back at the Royal Outpost Agency is going to die when I get back to the mountainhome.  He told us this was a scenic, peaceful area, but then we end up next to a horde of the living dead and one mile away from GOBLIN TERRITORY.  I managed to lock myself in a small shelter the bastards that came before us must have used, and found some useful tools.  There are a few tunnels into the lower parts of the shelter, but I'll stay up here for now.  What most concerns me is the huge Bronze creature outside.  I've heard legends of such creatures, large statues in the shape of some strange, tall, awkward looking dwarves that will rampage through fortresses, smashing dwarves until they are finally brought to a stop by dwarves whose names go down in history.

I looked further into the cavern today.  At the bottom of the staircase, I caught sight of a fearsome beast with pitch black skin and huge, ebony tusks trying to break in.  It shattered a small door to the side, and although it didn't notice me, it seemed to like the place, so I'm staying up here until it leaves.  The other surviving dwarves are going to try to fight off the undead.  While I don't support this, they left me some supplies in case they don't make it back.  I think they said something about a battle axe.

I finally braved the carnage outside to find two picks and bronze battle axe waiting for me outside the door.  The others died.  Horribly, I might add.  The beast is still downstairs, waiting for me to unwittingly step into the darkness.  In other news, I have managed to get most of the old equipment I found working, so I have a working still, a mechanicism press, and some other carving tools that are nice and sharp again.  I think, after a few more preparations, I might be able to kill this sonofabitch.

Excerpt from the journal of Nish Warmthmetal:
Entry 1: 26th Malachite, Mid-Summer
They didn't mention what was there when they said that ChanneledScarlet was a great place to move to.  When the migrant caravan gets there, we find a bunch of soulless former-dwarves, a legendary Bronze Colossus, and a herd of reindeer, of all things!  I managed to make it to an abandoned wooden cabin before those dwarven demons caught me, but the rest of my caravan wasn't so lucky.  I managed to scrounge up some bare supplies, and I might need to venture out again later.  Before I barricaded myself in, however, I did see a boarded up shelter built into the side of the mountain.  I may investigate later.

Excerpt from the journal of Thikut Seerhelms:
Entry 4: 26th Malachite, Mid-Summer
I learned how to use a pick today.  I hollowed out an area around one of the staircases for stone, but I didn't find much usable material.  Maybe about nine stones out of a fairly-sized area?  But anyway, I'm still surviving.  Also, I'm EXTREMELY glad I grabbed this journal.  Without any ghosts or others dwarves, it's probably the only thing keeping me sane.

Yeah, danger room is very valid in this situation.

Kudos to you if you could do without it, but really, a dwarf's gotta find some way to event he odds.
