Title: 100 Degrees - A community game
Post by: Kofthefens on July 26, 2012, 10:03:16 pm
100 Degrees is a WIP, community game. It is similar to DF, but with steam powered robots.

The game is situated in a world where the human race has disappeared. The only civilized beings left are steam-driven robots, living in their mines. Steam is the lifeblood of society. Without it, everything grinds to a halt. Coal or magma is needed to produce it. The goal is to reach magma, an infinite supplier of steam (so long as you have water)

Written in C#, developed in Unity.

We are welcome to newcomers - if you want to help, let us know. PM me with your email so I can give you access to the doc. I did not include most people from the first thread. If you'd still like to work on it, let us know. Skills that would be great:
- Someone who's good at sounds
- 3d modelers
- Texturer

Brainstorming is also welcome- we can discuss new ideas and add them to the section on the document. (We ask that you read that section first to get an idea of the game)

While the thread is, for the most part, devoid of activity, much activity goes on in the irc channel.

Goodness every game has to use hot fruit Jello now adays don't they?

I have literally no idea what you mean by "hot fruit Jello", but that is beside the point for this post. I have fixed the majority of the problems with my terrain code and now have a test running at 1.3M vertices and about 200 frames per second. If you don't move >.> If my picture wasn't so crappy I'd put it up here, but I have to play with it a little more so it doesn't just look like a blob of cuboid shapes heh...

Will post another update either later on today (1:30ish AM my time now) or tomorrow as well as a picture!!!

I'm a texturer o.o

Tell me what to do and I'll try to deliver.

I'm thinking "Hot Fruit Jello" means "Magma". I'd like to think that 100C differs somewhat from "every game" in so that the magma is not so much a weapon or decoration, but a reasonable goal.

Or maybe he refers to the standard Unity fire effects...

To be honest, i'm not meaning to insult anybody, but the game looks bad. As in graphically bad. But thats understandable if you are still searching texturerers and modellers.

Fair enough. The game is nowhere near done, and we only have one modeler. Graphics are not a priority at the moment.

Let's see...
I tried to avoid the gray ores.

2. Cassisterite (Tin) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cassiterite09.jpg

5. Limonite (Iron) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:LimoniteUSGOV.jpg

We also need some textures for the bars.

Like I said before, without UV maps bar textures aren't any good. Take a look at Skyrim's Iron Ingot texture. It has a polished look in the middle of the faces and dull ones at the edges. Unless I can do thy, they'd pretty much be featureless lumps of metal... o.o

As for the ores, I'll get to it ... soon. >.>
I've recently discovered one or more of my usb drives has been infected with an invisible autorun.inf virus, and I can't cure it; Photoshop is on my external hard, and with mercy it won't be in that state. I also have an interview coming up, a bunch of math to be done, and a growing addiction to Mabinogi :P

Great! If you pm me your email, I'll give you editing access on the doc.

What we need modeling of... You should talk to Mullet master (he's the other modeler), but off the top of my head, I'd say we need models of a bar, and some models of various types of pipes (Straight section, then junctions). Also, the models we have could stand to be improved.

I agree completely. Alot of the models we have are really rough, to illustrate the basic outline of structures, etc. and basically an improvement to using cubes for everything. I have messaged Nirur some points on getting started, and will be happy to answer additional questions.

Nirur Torir has successfully made and UV mapped a model. Talk to him.

In case you guys are waiting on my tutorial parts, that may take a while as I'm swamped with work right now. Feel free to take over if you're in a hurry.

Yay! Virex! It's cool. I think that other than the tutorial stuff we are good. But hell, tutorials are only a recent thing in games, so they 'can' be left out :D

If you are on about 10 - 11 hours from now, and I manage to be awake (as it is 330 am my time and gotta go sleep) then we can do a short meeting so that I can catch you up on a few things and get your opinion. If yer not then I'll send you a pm so I can get the opinions :D

Hope your work swampings calm down soon, and don't kill you in the meantime, lol.

Alfie275 has been doing a few sounds. You should talk to him, but what we need is a few sounds effects; look on the sound effects section on the the design document. Thanks for your help.

It just occurred to me- when you started it up, what quality graphics was it set to? Fastest does make it look horrible.

Okay, We are not dead yet!

A terrain generation web-build (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/108102506/100C/WebPlayer-Faster_2/WebPlayer/WebPlayer.html)

One command that I forgot to put in there: Use the scroll-wheel on your mouse to move the camera vertically.
Otherwise, have fun making weird looking terrain! :D

Some earlier pictures from the terrain prototypes:
Spoiler: Three large pictures! (click to show/hide)

The pictures should hopefully be mostly self-explanatory.

A note about the webplayer though. I still have some optimizations to run on it so for the love of armok please do not move the camera while the terrain is loading! Also, if you run it on a high terrain size, please put it into "Smooth Mode" before moving the camera as it is really slow without doing so.

Are you using perlin noise?

E: The terrain gen is pretty nice, i can see myself comfortably running around in that.
Title: Re: 100 Degrees - A community game
Post by: GalenEvil on October 13, 2012, 07:42:52 pm
Thanks Miauw! Glad to hear that it looks playable :D

It is Simplex noise, slightly faster than Perlin for 3D work. I should have a new version up by Monday with slopes and possibly different terrain types instead of the nigh constant hills/mountains. Hopefully it will include caves and at least one additional terrain type, as well as a little character that you can run around in the area in first person mode.

The slopes are a necessary addition since the above pictures are all just with the centers of each data point connected together. It looks nice but I need to be able to display more data and it needs to be destructible / have caves. The current heightmaps are not equipped to deal with caves sadly.

Nirur Torir sent me a message asking if I'd be willing to do concept art. I can do that. Is there anything I should focus on right now?

Great. Could you start with a robot? It should be as expectedly utilitarian as a robot built by robots, powered by a steam tank on its torso, have hands with two large-fingers/one large thumb, and be bipedal.

I'd like to help in some way if you need it. I'm a half-decent modeler and unwrapper, and I can do some rigging and animation if you need that kind of thing.

Been having more issues with my computer which required a new HDD for desktop :'( Just now got it into a runnable state about 20 minutes ago with all of my developmental programs on it but the progress I had made is now lost. Thankfully most of it was small tweaks to a single underlying set of algorithms which I have a basic written copy of still so I should be back to my previous level of work in the next day or so.

Sorry for lack of being around and the further lack of progress. Looking back over my notes, and thinking about what I had for my algorithm to generate the noise, I just took a look at the last webplayer I put up and it is exceedingly inefficient. It shouldn't need more than maybe 5-6 octaves of surface noise to look decent so that's the first thing that I am going to be working through when I get it up and running again.

@The Fool: possibly also some really basic tools that are shaped to be graspable by what Nirur described?
@Robocorn: Always looking for more modelers :D Will likely need rigging and animation work soon as well for the robot: Walking, turning, picking up and wielding tools / other objects.
