You can't, but some squadmates have masculine or feminine names.

in terms of game mechanics the game doesn't have gender at all. from the perspective, the great cataclysm of 1999 has rendered everyone sterile and bisexual.

I believe you either mean non-sexed or hermaphroditic... Bisexual just means they swing both ways.
I suppose it could be viewed as a far-distant future where the metrosexual trend has advanced significantly.

Bisexual works too, actually. They don't have to have their genders changed if they just become indiscriminate. Quite a cataclysm. ;)
