How much longer till a 64bit version?
« on: April 21, 2009, 05:18:53 pm »

If this pisses anyone off, I say all this with all the kindness a suggestion that may have been said many many times can be said with.
I'm running a 64bit ubuntu system here, I have the 32bit libraries but it gliches frequently, I think a 64bit version would help... If toady doesn't have a machine to build it on fine, but It seems a bit odd to me that nobody in the community with who toady trusts enough to allow that person to build DF doesn't have the correct machine to do so. I understand that DF will always be closed-source but still.
Toady, if you don't feel like showing the source to anyone then why not just get the cross-compiler/libraries needed to build it?

baughn et all have not seen the actual source. Toady released the graphics part of DF in the form of battlechamps which is what baughn etc work on to get us those awesome opengl updates :)

Jaked122, why do you keep posting this?  Making more threads probably won't get it any more attention...

What glitches do you get, anyway? I'm running 64bit Ubuntu and run the game perfectly fine with the 32bit libraries.

Yeah, I don't really think DF being 32 bit is a problem at all.    The issue may be that you're using a 64bit Linux distribution for emulating a Windows game.   Considering that DF is still in alpha, I don't really think it's Toady's responsibility to cater to every possible OS configuration out there.

Capntastic, there is an official Linux version now.

But not a 64bit one, which apparently makes the OP angry.

You said 'emulating a windows game', which is what Ampersand was referring to.

OP: Please report glitches and bugs to the stickied discussion thread about the 40dn series of releases if they are not DF bugs (that is, if they do not occur with straight 40d)

Right, I'll concede that that I misinterpreted the OP as emulating DF rather than using the native Linux port.   But I'll point out that it seemed more likely to me, as the OP made it seem like the issue was with with getting his own niche OS working properly with the release variants already out, rather than the blame being DF itself.   If he legitimately felt the widespread need for a 64 bit version, he wouldn't have given all these details about how DF doesn't work with his own non-standard setup.   And even then, someone else has posted that they have a similar setup as him and things work great.   So, I feel this is an issue on Jaked's end.

Huh? Do you have any problems with running DF on a x64 OS? Because I don't....

I do. I have to run it in windows 98 computability mode, or my saves corrupt themselves. Doing so also causes some weirdness with the DF process not ending when I exit, and messes up a bunch of other things on my computer. I exit normally, then I have to ctrl+alt+del and end dwarfort.exe, every single time.

I can play just fine though, just wish it didn't prevent me from playing anything else  :D

...wait, I don't play anything else...

I do use my web browser though, and without ending the DF process I cannot start Chrome.

(x64 windows XP btw)

whenever I'm using the owned building screen if I try to go to another part of the fortress where that building is with the 'q' button, the game gets a segfault

I thought building any application would be easy, assuming it's coded right and that correct libraries are installed...
