Decided to make a temporary one to contain the spillover. This is now the temporary indefinite AmeriPol thread!

Basic rules.

1. Be civil towards each other. <- This is pretty much the big one. Passionate arguments are fine, just be civil.

2. don't do personal attacks. <- This is a major reason for flareups, so, if you find yourself doing it, chill out.

3. Generally follow the forum rules.

If things get out of hand or flamey, I WILL lock the thread and give it a timeout.

Basically what the title says, I'm trying to find one that works with twitchtv streams to use while watching the streams.

I've tried looking around google, but can't seem to find what I want.

Life Advice / So, Windows 10, is it any good or an improvement over 8.1?

Okay, so, I have Win 8.1 on this laptop and I'm mulling over whether I should get windows 10 or not. My uncle, who is good with computers (not that I'm not), said that it's good and an improvement over windows 8 features or something.

But I've heard of some things having issues with running on windows 10 and I saw in another thread that the free upgrade is available until June 2017 or so. So, I'm not in a hurry here. I use a third party app which makes the taskbar like it was in windows 7 and I ignore that wierd main feature from 8.1.

tl;dr
Trying to decide whether to upgrade to windows 10 from 8.1, but don't know for sure pros and cons or like what.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / "drive off" agreement not working?

Has anybody gotten this quest to work for dark pits? Because I'm trying to do the 'make them leave the site' method rather than the takeover method, but the quest isn't getting completed even though I've killed everybody. Even tried killing the trolls, but those just respawn.

I did a copy and then legends export to check the remaining population and legendsviewer says that there are two goblin outcasts somewhere and one human outcast. I suspect that the human outcast is one of my adventurers that got rubberbanded when they went out of range.

DF Suggestions / Have tracks (as in tracking) display how old the track is

An important part of tracking is recognizing how old the track is, from fresh to old tracks. After all, if you were tracking your dinner, would you follow a week old track or a fresh one?

Hunting aside, knowing how old a track is would still be useful when trailing someone or knowing if the tracks are hours old or days or even weeks old.

You could use the same symbols for wear to show how old it is at a glance.

Has anybody noticed if adv mode is laggier this version?

In my third created adventurer in this world I'm playing, I've noticed that theres this unknown lag going on sometimes, which I've gotten occasionally in the middle of nowhere, but seems to happen a good deal when near rivers.

I posted a report up and a save. So, could those who know how to handle DFhack when it isn't fully updated yet, check it out?

Masterwork DF / Question on Masterwork and Mayday graphics

How well does this mod work with Mayday graphics and how do I install the graphics into the mod?

Okay, heres the thing, I had walled off the edge of the second cavern level decades back because I was annoyed at FBs getting completely lost in the 80% water filled cavern level. Decades later I reopened the edge and walled off the shoreline to keep FBs out of the water, but no creatures other than pond grabbers were spawning down there. I decided to set the pond grabber homeotherm to 0 to kill them on spawn, but when no other creatures spawned down there, I fixed it back, and still nothing, not even pond grabbers.

I've also noticed that it seems to be compensating by double spawning (as in spawning two groups) creatures in either of the other two levels.

I've also unblocked the cavern passageway between the second and third in an attempt to crosspollinate the two. Also, I don't know if it matters, but it's that sort of cavern biome where the moss and fungi are covered in mud and you only see the trees and shrubs.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Some questions on minecarts and tracks

Is it possible to use a lever in a way that makes a track stop say go/no-go to keep dwarves from pushing/guiding/riding the minecart even though the orders would say otherwise? I'm making a bit of a testing facility and I don't want to have to monitor it and make changes on the fly so that I can start and stop a test when I want to. I'm testing out a minecart railgun and I don't want to accidentially shrapnel my dwarves between setting up for another run and have them push the minecart when it's not ready.

Any good threads or tutorials on working with minecarts, rollers, etc? I know this thread: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=129453.0 is a good one, but are there others?

Also, any good tutorials on making minecart railguns? Preferrably ones that I can trigger with the lever rather than mess with the orders.

Edit: How do I make a minecart throw it's contents through a fortification? My carpenter was lucky that the contents didn't fly out when I had apparently set the rollers the wrong way.

I have a huge area available on the top of the mountain in my fort (over 40x40 ) with 40 through each windmill and I'm planning on making a huge windmill farm up there, however, I haven't made a huge windfarm before and I don't typically use windmills (usually because I luck out in having good wind power).

So, whats the best way to create a power train for the whole thing so that I have as much surplus as possible?

While doing exploration with a stray animal, I noticed that there was this wierd bit of map in the corner that wouldn't be revealed, and there is a stray monitor lizard a z level below the cursor. There were also a bunch of crundles that mysteriously died, DFhacks deathcause just says crundle has died. No cause, nothing. Also, the montor lizard can go into the unexplored area and has killed a few crundles in the area.

Also, the zombies that I had seen earlier near the demon fort (including at least two mothmen/women) have mysteriously vanished, or maybe they retreated inside, don't know. A quick check with reveal hell shows zombies still inside the demon fort though, so it's not too bad.

ARG! I swear getting them to put artifacts where I want them was easier in previous versions, I'm having an infuriating time trying to get the dwarves to take the artifacts out of the bins into a storage deeper into the fort (and not in the trading stockpile). So, HOW??

Also trying to get some random necromancer books into a separate stockpile, but meh.

Edit: Forbidding from the z stocks screen oughta do it, but yeah, a real hassle :P

Edit2: Or not. I was eventually able to do it before.........

DF Gameplay Questions / Questions on magma pistons

This is the first time I'm doing a magma piston and while I understand the concept, I'm still trying to figure some aspects out.

1. How do I make a magma piston send magma from a larger reservoir into a smaller catchment basin and into a series of channels? I have an idea of how i might do it since I want to spread the magma out rather than having it in a large square catchment basin (though I can easily just channel out the edges of the basin to make channels, but still.....) although maybe instead of making the reservoir bigger horizontially, I can make it bigger vertically.

2. If I make bridges on top of the piston, will it still fall when I break the support or will the piston end up sticking to the bottom of the bridges? (then again, the magma might end up underneath the bridges, which isn't my intention)

3. If I were to make say, a 6x6 reservoir that is 1 level deep, fill that with 7/7 magma, would a catchment basin of the same size fill would the exact amount of magma? I'm just trying to get a sense of how the math and the magma distribution works out.

I know and have read the stuff regarding undead and that the necromancers can even raise stuff like skin (undead cloakers anybody?) and hair, however, any tips regarding this stuff before I embark?

I'm also embarking on a non-volcano tile and will be performing my first magma piston.
