DF General Discussion / Re: PeridexisErrant's DF Starter Pack
« on: January 30, 2017, 12:12:35 pm »
I'd avoid saving in program files because of the goofy rules about where things get saved physically. Even some anti-virus stuff doesn't work properly there. Anymore I reserve that for MS stuff only.

Try installing everything in a  \games or \games\df folder or some such.

Windows 7 has some rules about applications writing to the "Program Files" directories.  They seem to get applied inconsistently (which really means I haven't bothered to figure out what they actually are). I never "install" anything there that involves me unzipping something to a directory.  I second the suggestion to try it somewhere else.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Available work order materials
« on: September 24, 2016, 06:58:10 pm »
I'm trying to set up a couple of work orders to keep wooden and steel bolts at certain levels.  I can specify based on the number of bolts for wood, but only with specific wood types and not generic wood.  For the steel ones, there is no selectable material for steel.  Am I missing something or is there no way to do what I want?

On a similar note, there is no material for obsidian. Are some materials just not available for order conditions?

Can someone explain the differences between "at most"/"less than" and "at least"/"greater than"?  Is one inclusive and the other not?

Curses / Re: Entry 100034236 of the same question

Is there a way to tell which I have?  The copy I got yesterday is 4.07.0, but I'm not sure if that is r855, r864 or other

Curses / Do Sleepers get promotions?
« on: January 14, 2016, 11:27:23 am »
I don't recall if I just assumed this or read it in passing and don't remember where, but will my sleepers get promoted over time?  I.E Can Lawyers become judges, can teller become bank managers, will college students graduate and get jobs?

The closest I could find was this thread but it seems to be about political positions and not profession.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress 40_24 Starter Pack r7

I couldn't find a reference to this searching the thread, but I haven't read the entire thread either.

This has been true for me for the last several versions of the pack:

There is a file in "Dwarf Fortress 40_24 Starter Pack rX\LNP\Colors" named " Current graphics pack.txt".  The space at the front of the name is not a mistake, it's actually this way when I unzip the archive. This is an issue for me because I keep my DF installs in a OneDrive folder which does not like spaces at the beginning of file names.  I rename the file (twice because Windows considers "Blah" and " Blah" to be the same file) and Onedrive is satisfied.

If I change the graphics pack, instead of editing "Current graphics pack.txt" the launcher creates " Current graphics pack.txt(2)".  Onedrive notifies me that a file has a name it hates, and I delete the old and rename the new.

I haven't done any !science!, but I feel like I get fewer crashes without the space.  It's probably superstition, but I thought I'd share since people seem to have trouble sometimes with graphics in the pack.  Maybe most things don't care about the space, but maybe something in the mix does.

edit: fat-finger mispost before I was finished

Have you built any constructions over trees? That's a common crash that's new in 0.40.24.

I have a wall set to build at the end of a tree branch.  I'll give that a shot.

Edit: That seems to have been it.  Thanks much.

I'm having the constant crash issue as well.  I have tried PrintMode as 2D and Standard, tried removing the TWBT dll.  It seems to make no difference whether I use any utilities or not.

I got through the first year without issues, crashed in month 3 of year two and started over from the seasonal save at 1/1.  Since then I've not been able to get a month of play, though sometimes it is 1-3 days after load, sometimes a week or two.  Ive been autosaving, and my current save is 1/23 and the last several loads have not gone more than 2 days after a load.

This post sends to another with instructions on uploading dumps, but neither says where they should be uploaded.  Is there a preferred place, or should I just stick them somewhere and provide a url?

That did it.  And I get the difference between userdata as a type vs a key now.  Thanks for the responses.

I'm trying to do two things at once: learn lua and figure out how the dfhack model is structured.

I wrote a quick, ugly script that prints out the pairs of a 'unit'.  when the value is a vector, it expands it and when the value is of type userdata, it indents and recurses.

it chugs along for a while, then dies on one.

the line of death is
for n,g in pairs(t) do  //table/userdata

with error Qbad argument #1 to 'pairs' (table expected, got userdata)

to debug, prior to this line I generate this output
dumping userdata     //print("dumping " .. type(t))
userdata: 111847e8 //print(t)

for all the ones before this looked like this:
dumping userdata                    //print("dumping " .. type(t))
(gait_info.T.flags: 0x13f37778)  //print(t)

I understand that userdata is a raw chunk of memory.  Does it just so happen that untli this one that kills it that the others just happeneded to be tables?  Both have the 'type' of "userdata".
if(type(t) == "userdata")  evaluates to true for both.  Is this some memory chunk that doesn't yet have a data structure in dfhack?

Ultimately, I'd like to figure out a way to drill into the ones work like tables, and somehow expand this one (I assume 111847e8 is the address for whatever this thing is) to see what it is (or just skip it).  But since both have type "userdata" I don't know how to distinguish them with a lua statement.

I'm usually pretty smart, but feel free to assume I'm not (type slowly with little words and a condescending tone inside your head).

Nobody would even know if you just made up the rest without the inspiration of the enhanced RNG.

Quote
In short order, Dojango was left alone, standing before the carved statue of his friend.  He stared at it for what felt like hours, willing the stone to move, to step forward, to do anything.  But it stayed steady, a monument that would last for eternity if the Gods willed it.  Unlike the poor shell entombed behind it, bent and broken midst the sodden wooden wreckage.

It's been almost a year for me, so I'm a bit lost.  Who is the statue?

Is this something that has been suggested to Toady?  I'd like to have the forum accessible through tapatalk, but don't want to bug him if he's already said no.

Thanks.  Is there a way to view the terrain under the sprawl without actually embarking?

In playing around more, even tiles in the region map with "normal" symbols such as forest, mountain, desert, have similar things in the local map: "walled" regions filled with some character/symbol that obscure the actual terrain.
